A lesson in history, patriotism

PRESTON COLE/Princeton Post-Telegraph

The Princeton High School FCCLA chapter (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) hosted the R-5 district’s 50th annual Veterans Day program on Friday afternoon (Nov. 10). The date was the United States Marine Corps’ 248th birthday, and we were able to catch these Marines for a birthday photo - Winn Holt (from left), Tim Stark, Bill Zeider and Jerry Allen. We were unable to catch up with Dirk Schwartzkopf to include him. Marines consider Nov. 10, 1775 as a sacred holiday because on that day, the Second Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Continental Marines.

PRINCETON World Pneumonia Day was observed Sunday, Nov. 12. This day is dedicated to increasing awareness of pneumonia, its severity, and ways to prevent it. Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in one or both lungs. Fluid and pus may fill small sacs in the lungs, causing a congested cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. Many different organisms can cause pneumonia, including bacteria and viruses like influenza and COVID-19. Pneumonia causes more deaths than any other infectious

disease in children and adults approximately 2.5 million people died of pneumonia in 2019. In 2020, this number grew to 4 million due to COVID-19 associated pneumonia. There are many ways to prevent pneumonia. Use good hygiene - wash your hands often and don’t share personal items like eating utensils and toothbrushes. You should also avoid smoking; smoking destroys your lungs’ natural defense to respiratory infections. Keep your immune system strong by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising See Pneumonia, Page 2
