Oh The Weather Outside Is Frightful…

2024 came with a vengeance as ten to twelve inches of snow fell on Lake Thunderhead. While the view was picturesque the -16 - -20 degree temperatures were anything but pleasant. High winds made the temperatures unbearable for most.
Wildflower Community maintenance workers were unable to keep up with the blowing snows and high amount of snow dumped on the roads and were forced to open a single lane in order reach all the residents. The winds were closing the roads about as fast they could be opened up.
Three Positions Open For The May Election

Resolve to make a difference in 2024 Need for volunteers grows as climate crisis brings more frequent, intense disasters
COLUMBIA, MO (Dec. 28, 2023) — As the time for making New Year’s resolutions grows closer, the American Red Cross of Central and Northern Missouri asks you resolve to make a difference and support your community by becoming a volunteer in 2024.
“We’re seeing both the frequency and intensity of disasters increase due to extreme weather,” said Rebecca Gordon, Executive Director, Red Cross of Central and Northern Missouri.
“Across the country, the Red Cross is responding to nearly twice as many large disasters as we did a decade ago to help people. This uptick in responses means we need more volunteers. The need to help has never been greater.” Our volunteers are at the heart of our mission and represent 90% of the Red Cross workforce. Visit redcross.org/volunteertoday to sign up for opportunities within your local community. You can help people here in Central and Northern
Missouri or you can sign up to support disaster victims in other parts of the country. Your time and talent can make a real difference in people’s lives.
HOW TO HELP
Locally in the Central and Northern Missouri chapter, over 240 people volunteer with the Red Cross. In the last fiscal year, they responded to nearly 200 disasters, assisting over 280 families. Our local volunteers are part of the almost 275,000 volunteers across the country whose
support enables the Red Cross to provide relief and comfort for disaster victims, lifesaving blood products for patients, emergency support for military families and veterans, and much more. Please resolve to help by volunteering in 2024.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) congratulates Jeffrey Needles of Lake Lotawana for catching the first state-record of 2024 – a 12-ounce yellow perch. Needles was using a throwline Jan. 3 when he caught the fish from Lake Lotawana. The previous alternative methods record for yellow perch was a 10-ounce fish caught from a private pond in 2019.
“I’d talked about breaking this record a lot,” said Needles. “We’ve always had yellow perch in Lake Lotawana, and I thought, ‘What if I did a throwline

for alternative records?’ My wife asked me what I was doing that day and I jokingly told her, ‘I’m going out to break the record for yellow perch!’”
Needles said he created a leader at the lake and immediately caught a yellow perch.
“I was very surprised to get one so quickly, so I thought I may be on to something,” he said. “It was about 45 minutes later and I was getting discouraged, and cold, but I caught a second one that looked bigger.”
The fish was a weight Needles was hoping for – the first state record of 2024.
“A big driver was I wanted to get the state
record for yellow perch, and I also wanted to be the first state record of 2024, so I knew I needed to get it done quickly,” he said.
The 12-ounce fish was weighed on a certified scale in Blue Springs.
“I do weekly fishing tournaments with my buddies, and a lot of guys say record perch is in that lake,” Needles noted. “I have friends trying to break the record for pole-and-line, so for me to get the alternative records method is fun. And having my kids there for that moment made it even more special.”
Needles said the perch stayed alive throughout the weighing process, and he later let it go. He plans to have a replica made of his record fish.
Missouri state record fish are recognized in two categories: poleand-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: trotline, throwline, limb line, bank line, jug line, gig, bow, crossbow, underwater spearfishing, snagging, snaring, grabbing, or atlatl. We supply all the training you need.

MDC encourages homeowners to check their trees for storm damage
Winter weather poses threats to the stability of trees, and damaged trees should be maintained or removed.

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.
– As heavy snowfall has impacted the region recently, trees around northeastern Missouri may be damaged under the weight of the snow or the strength of the wind. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds homeowners to check their
trees for any damage from the recent winter weather.
Storm damage to trees can lead to structural issues with the tree which may pose a threat to your property. Maintaining your trees regularly each winter helps to ensure that any changes to the integrity of a tree are
noticed quickly, and it is important to check on the stability of your trees post-storm.
Foresters with MDC suggest walking your property and searching for damaged trees or branches post-storm. Be sure to check for live power lines before approaching any damaged or downed trees; If there are power lines running through the damaged tree, do not approach the area. Instead, call experts to safely remove the debris.

For trees that are not entirely downed, check how extensive the damage is – if over 50% of the crown of the tree and the root systems are still intact, then the tree is worth saving. Remove any compromised limbs, and do not severely prune the tree as this may weaken the tree.

If you have questions about the integrity of a tree, contact a certified professional arborist. You can also contact your local MDC forester with any questions regarding managing trees on your property. Find a list of local MDC contacts at http://short.mdc. mo.gov/4ok.
