MDC reminds public to dispose of fish waste responsibly

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds the public to dispose of waste responsibly when cleaning fish. Each year, MDC receives numerous nuisance complaints of fish waste on the banks around public fishing accesses, especially during the paddlefish snagging season. It’s important for anglers to do their part to keep fishing areas clean for others to enjoy.

In addition to using trash receptacles, disposing of fish-cleaning waste

back into the water is allowed. Waste should not be piled up near the water’s edge, and instead should be discarded into deeper water or in the flowing part of the stream. This assures waste cannot wash up to the bank or be concentrated in one area.

How You Can Resolve To Be Smoke Free In 2023

ball, the confetti and the 2022 wall calendars have all come down, and our attention turns to the annual tradition of making New Year’s resolutions. This can include health goals, such as deciding to have 2023 be the year to finally quit tobacco successfully. Most adult smokers in our state tried to do so at least once in the past year, reports the Florida Department of Health.

Quitting for good may take several attempts. With the resolution to quit, every year more and more people succeed on their own. But it may help to know some tips, and to know that you don’t have to do it alone. Are you resolving to quit tobacco? If so…

Remember your reason.

What’s your biggest personal motivator to quit? If what keeps you going is a desire to be healthy and be there for your kids for years to come, strategically position photos of those smiling faces in the places you used to take your smoke breaks.

Maybe you’re quitting because you like the idea of putting thousands of dollars back in your pocket? Add to your wallet or purse a note keeping track of how much you’re saving every day, and set a goal to save for a specific treat, reward or trip with those savings.

Tell your friends and family about your quit date and plan.

Thank your personal network in advance for their patience and support as you start your

quit journey. This might include switching up your plans to include new routines to meet up in different places from where you used to go if tobacco was part of that experience. And, of course, they can cheer you on along your path to success.

Learn about the options in the community for free help and think about which ones seem best to help you “quit your way.”

Support can be what makes this quit resolution stick. That can come in many forms. Tobacco Free Florida’s Quit Your Way program offers free Phone Quit, Group Quit and Web Quit services across the state, textbased support, a Quit Guide and more. Group Quit classes are also free, either in person in any of the 67 counties across

Florida or even virtually, right from where you are.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) such as gum, patches or lozenges could double your chances of quitting for good, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show. Free 2-week starter kits are available when medically appropriate.

Teens should know interactive, text-based quit support is available by texting VAPEFREE to 873373 to join the state’s Live Vape Free program to help quit e-cigarettes. As a state, we are making progress against ecigarettes: youth use of electronic vapor products has dropped each of the last five years, including going down by more than 17% last year, according to the Florida Youth Tobacco Survey. Working together, that number can continue to drop for 2023.

Make 2023 your year to be smokefree. Stay focused, share your awesome plan and get help in the way that works best for you, and you can

do it. Thousands across Florida already have. Check out TobaccoFreeFlorida.com for more tips, ideas and support.

ignated the elk archery portion to run Oct. 2129 and the elk firearms portion to run Dec. 9-17. The five permits will be for bull elk with at least one antler being six inches or greater in length and will be valid for both portions.

Only Missouri residents who will be at least 11 years of age by the first day of the hunt for which they are applying are eligible to apply for bear and elk permits during the application period of May 1-31. All permits will be assigned through a random drawing.

The Missouri Conservation Commission gave final approval to the bear and elk season recommendations from MDC during its March 14 open meeting in Jefferson City.

Black Bear Hunting

MDC has established three Bear Management Zones (BMZ) in southern Missouri and will issue annual permit numbers and harvest quotas for each of the three BMZs. Each permit will be for a specific BMZ and may be used on public or private property within the BMZ. Once the specific harvest quotas are filled for each BMZ, the season for that BMZ will be closed.

There is a fee of $10 per applicant. Applicants must select one of three BMZs. Those selected will then be eligible to buy a BMZ-specific permit at a cost of $25.

BMZ 2: Permit quota of 150 issued with a harvest quota of 15 bears.

BMZ 3: Permit quota of 50 issued with a harvest quota of 5 bears.

Hunting hours will be a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. Hunters must call MDC prior to hunting each day to determine the closure status of the BMZ for which they are permitted. Hunters will be allowed to use both

Allergy Avoidance

(NAPSI)—Ah, Spring: Flowers in bloom, birds on the wing, fun in the sun—and itchy eyes, runny noses, sneezing, coughing, hives, wheezing, fatigue and difficulty breathing for the more than 60 million Americans the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America say suffer from asthma or allergies. But there can be a solution.

The Problem

Even the cleanest home can harbor all sorts of indoor allergens. Unseen contaminants and air pollutants including dirt, dust, pet dander, cigarette smoke, mold,

mildew and chemicals. They get pulled into your home’s HVAC system and recirculated throughout the house several times a day. An Answer

A few simple steps can reduce and remove allergens.

•Pet dander: Regularly steam clean your furniture, carpets, and window coverings. Decluttering gives dander fewer places to hide. And regularly bathing your dog or cat sends excess dander down the drain.

•Mold and mildew: Use mold inhibitors in your paints, clean your bathroom and kitchen

STATELINE FIREWOOD

with mold-busting products and use a dehumidifier or air purifier.

•Air system filtration: Change air filters monthly. Consider HEPA filters, designed to catch the tiniest particles of pollutants.

•Schedule a professional air duct cleaning: A good way to be sure you’ll get the job done right is to hire a National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) member through the online directory at http://nadca. com/en/prosearch/all. NADCA members have technicians on staff with advanced training and certification in HVAC system cleaning.

Treasurer report Expenses do not include $900 per month for lift stations checked, repairs, etc. so the changes would build our emergency fund. At this time more discussion needs to be had before Board votes and makes a decision.

Annexation of North Bay – Developer turns over new development to Association, North Bay has been the slowest build, chip/seal still needs to be done before turning over development. The only thing still needing to be decided is the sewer, it has its own lagoon near the Prairie Rose sign. Board is looking into what it would take to hook North Bay up to our Sewer system. North Bay residents currently pay all dues and assessments to WCA.

Again, the office is responsible for enforcing Policy’s about boat registration so it is important to know who the owners of each property are. We’ve also discovered that there is a group of Meadow Rue properties that are plotted and assigned lot numbers that have never been sold that belong to WCA. Some of those lots have been used to build storage units so not all may be available for sale.

Office Computer/

Hours update – Kim said the new software is on track to launch by April 1 that will include the mobile app for members to pay bills, view entertainment schedule, etc. Also as we’ve received request to open in March on Saturdays we will try it as a test this year to see if we have enough business to make it a regular practice. Starting March 4th the office will now be open on Saturdays 8am -4pm thru the end of the season.

The Wildlife Code of Missouri states that extracted paddlefish eggs may not be possessed while on the water or adjacent banks and may not be transported. Disposing of paddlefish eggs immediately back into the water is allowed. A person cannot transport eggs to another location. This includes by boat to deeper water.

Paddlefish have several regulations to help protect them from poaching. Anglers may keep the eggs; however, extracted paddlefish eggs may not be possessed while on the waters of the state or adjacent banks, and may not be transported. If anglers wish to keep the eggs, they should

be prepared to hold the intact fish on ice and remove the eggs from the fish later. Once the eggs have been removed from the fish, they cannot be transported to any other location. Learn more about paddlefish regulations online at https:// short.mdc.mo.gov/4gb.

Most species of fish have daily possession limits and disposing of an entire fish is not only wasteful, but a violation of the Wildlife Code. Entire fish cannot be tossed on a bank or dumped back into the water. Anglers fishing in Missouri waters should plan to use the fish they keep.

Maintaining public fishing areas for everyone to enjoy requires the help of all citizens. Anyone fishing in Missouri should be mindful of regulations and impacts to others.

sics as Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth.

“Tomorrow when I wake or think I do, what shall I say of today? That with Estragon my friend, at this place, until the fall of night, I waited for Godot?”

“You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be

no road between.”

— Arthur Miller

In Act III of Arthur Miller’s iconic play The Crucible, Judge Danforth explains the black-and-white thinking of the authorities and the narrow-minded mentality that made the Salem witch trials such a bloody and unjust affair.
