Applications Being Accepted for GRM Networks® Sponsored Youth Trip to Nation’s Capital Princeton, Missouri – Applications are being accepted now through February 23, 2024, for the GRM Networks’ sponsored Youth Tour to our nation’s capital.

This summer, GRM Networks will sponsor two high school juniors on an all-expense paid trip to the 2024 Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Youth Tour June 3-7 in Washington, D.C. Youth representing GRM Networks will join other students representing rural telecommunication providers from across the United States as they learn about legislative and government processes and the importance of quality broadband connections.

Selected youth will also tour famous historical sites, monuments and meet with representatives from the Federal Communications Commission as well as staff and members of congress

from the youth’s congressional district. Youth will also attend sessions focused on developing leadership skills.

Area youth, whose parents or legal guardians are members of GRM Networks, may apply. Students must be a junior in high school and age 16 or 17 at the time of the tour. Students age 18 or older at the time of the tour are ineligible to attend. Immediate family members of GRM Networks employees and board members are not eligible to participate.

The Paper Must Go Out

Last Tuesday morning my world was rocked to its core. It started with an early morning call from the printers stating Preston (Cole) had missed his deadline and in fact hadn’t sent the pages at all. This is uncharacteristic of Preston and I immediately knew something was amiss!

A text to my bookkeeper, Christy McCracken had her scurrying to the office where she discovered he had fallen and couldn’t get up on his own. An ambulance was dispatched and Preston was whisked away to Wright Memorial Hospital. Preston has since been transported to Lee’s Summit for more expertise care.

While my thoughts were with him I started working on the unfinished pages in order to get the paper on the street. While we missed the deadline we were able to put a paper together and it was delivered Friday.

I want to ask for your patience while we “figure things out”. Preston’s shoes will be hard to fill in the interim, but collectively we will get it done.

I would like to ask one more favor… please pray for a speedy recovery for Preston.

In the Water Department, shrinkage was reported to be down to 12.48% after temporarily stopping the large leak found under the tracks at Elm Street. Mayor Shields stated he’d contacted an engineering firm regarding the permanent repair of said leak but the firm had not contacted City Hall as they said they would.

In the Sewer Department, Water/Waste Water Superintendent Kevin Nickell informed the Council that Don’s Jons had paid for the last 2 jettings on the sewer lines due to his dumps possibly contributing to the issues.

Mayor Shields stated he’d talked with Don’s Jons and they had stated they’d be willing to pay to jet more of the lines.

Mayor Shields gave the Council an update on the demo of the old Senior Center that had been reported to the DNR. Shields stated that resident Todd Dunlap had taken the necessary classes to finish hauling the debris from the site.

Mayor Shields then stated there may be issues with the Senior Citizens meal site, saying someone had asked him why the City was charging them $5000.00 a year. The City charges the Seniors $225.00 per month for rent to have their meals on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; all other renters pay $75.00 per day. Mayor Shields stated he might try to attend one of their board meetings to see if/ what the problems may be.

Discussion then turned to the Post Office and what the Clerk had found

out about possibly getting a loan to build a new post office. Clerk Shriver stated they could not get a loan through USDA but she was directed to inquire about a revolving loan fund through the local electric company. She informed the Council of guidelines of the loan: $300,000 maximum loan amount, term would be 10 years or less with the interest rate being set by the GEC board of directors, will lend up to but not exceed 50% of the project cost, business plan required, and $100.00 application fee.

Clerk Shriver went on to say that she was in the process of getting estimates for all aspects of the possible new build to see if the City could even come up with their half of the costs.

Mayor Shields then thanked Chad VanHorn for his years of service and swore in all newly elected Councilmembers Scott Bell, Elizabeth Polsdofer, and Jacob Snow.

Mayor Shields then asked who would like to replace Chad VanHorn as a signer on City checks.

Josh Stiles said he would if no one else wanted to.

Council unanimously agreed to have Josh Stiles become the new signer on checks for the City.

Hearing no further business, Mayor Shields declared the meeting adjourned; Meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m.

The Lineville City Council met in regular session at 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2023, at Lineville City Hall.

Mayor Jack Shields called the meeting to order answering roll call were Councilmembers Scott Bell, Tom Shriver, Josh Stiles, and Chad VanHorn; City Clerk Brandy Shriver.

Also present were newly elected Councilmembers Jacob Snow and Elizabeth Polsdofer; Water/Waste Water Superintendent Kevin Nickell and resident Devin Winters.

Josh Stiles moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting as posted. Scott Bell seconded the motion; Motion carried 4-0.

The City Clerk presented the monthly fund balance report showing November income of $27212.95 in governmental funds and $17261.95 in utility funds and November expenditures of $7564.00 in governmental funds and $18803.79 in utility funds and transfers of $1425.00 in utility

Mercer Lady Cardinals Tigers Were The Lucky Saints Come Out On Ones With Win Over North Defeat Saints 55-41 Harrison Top vs Cardinals

The Mercer Lady Cardinals were victorious over the Saints of Mormon Trail winning the match-up 55-41.

Mercer jumped out in front 17-7 in the first quarter with Ashlynn Brown and Maddi Fisher leading the Lady Cardinals with five each.

In the second quarter Brown and Emma Shipley each scored six to lead the Lady Cardinals to a 33-20 lead at half-

time.

Mercer was outscored 11-9 in the third quarter before coming back in the fourth quarter to outscore Mormon Trail 13-10.

Fisher led scoring with 17 followed by Shipley with 12 and Brown with 11. Bailey Houk added seven for the Lady Cardinals.

Mormon Trail was led by Annika Shanks wit 14.

North Andrew Falls To Tiger’s First half Defense And Strong Shooting The Tigers pulled off a win against the Cardinals of North Andrew 61-46.

The Tigers scored 15 points in the first quarter with even scoring fromClay Evans with five, and four each from Noel Schreffler and Talon Holt while holding the Cardinals to six.

In the second quarter it was all Tigers, 14-6.

The Cardinals tried to slip back into the game in the third quarter outscoring the Tigers 2017.

In the final frame Princeton added 15 points while North Andrew scored 14.

Holt had 26 points on the night and Evans had 19.

Princeton faced off against neighboring North Harrison coming out with a 20-point win, 66-46.

The Tigers came out strong scoring 20 points.

Led by Talon Holt with nine points and Clay Evans with seven. The defense held the Shamrocks to 14 points.

At half-time the Tigers controlled the score with a 32-24 lead.

In the third quarter Princeton maintained their eight point lead, 41-33.

The final quarter saw Holt add 11 points and

Evans four.

Scoring for Princeton was led by Holt with 28 points including three three-point shots in the first quarter. Evans had 20 points shooting 75% at the freethrow line dropping three of four and making three threepoint shots. The Tigers went to the charity strip seven times scoring six of those attempts. Kelby Thomas and Lincoln Berndt each added six and Hunter Lowrey had four points.

North Harrison was led by Keygun Johnson with 14 points.

Lady Tigers Cruise To Easy Win Over North Harrison

Traveling to North Harrison, the Lady Tigers came home with a 57-27 win over the Lady Shamrocks.

Princeton scored 20 points in the first quarter while their opponent scored five. They tacked on another 13 in the second quarter for a 33-9 half-time lead. Addy Henke had 17 points for

the Lady Tigers including nine from the threepoint line. and Grace Kelly had 11.

In the second half Macey Lewis had nine points for Princeton and Kelly added another seven.

Henke ended the night with 19, Kelly with 18 and Lewis with 11.

The Morman Trail boys basketball team wasn’t so saintly, defeating the Mercer Cardinals 64-47.

The Cardinals started strong leading 20-10 after the first quarter, led

by Brenden Wolfe with 11 points and Jayce Davis with seven.

The Saints got their game plan in the second quarter outscoring the Cardinals 12-7 for a 2722 halftime.

In the third Tyle Meinecke gave the Car-

dinals a boost with seven points, half of the Mercer points that quarter.

The Cardinal defense let down allowing a 26 point effort for Morman Trail, 48-41 Saints.

In the fourth quarter, the Saints outscored Mercer by ten 16-6 for the final score.

Wolfe scored 21 for the Cards and Meinecke had 14. Kobe Hill hit a three-pointer and Wes Hachman had a bucket for two.

Lady Tigers Secures Win Over Lady Cardinals Friday

Hosting North Andrew last Friday night the Lady Tigers won the matchup 54-49.

Lady Tigers were cold in the first quarter getting outscored 22-8.

They battled back in the second quarter to score 14 points while holding the Lady Cards to seven points. Grace Kelly had seven points and Addy Henke added five.

Trailing by six going into the fourth quarter The Lady Tigers scored 17 points while holding their opponent to six for the win.

Hickmans To Celebrate 75th Obituaries Trinady Jade Anniversary Card Shower Is Requested In Their Honor

Loren and Lea (Delameter) Hickman will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary on December 24, 2023. They were married on December 24, 1948 at the home of Bro V.F. Walker in Princeton. Their attendants were Lewis and Jane Hickman. They have one son Charles Hickman, three grandsons, and three great grandchildren.

Bowen 2011- 2023

Princeton, MO: Trinady Jade Bowen, 12, Princeton, MO passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She was born January 10, 2011 in Cameron, Missouri the daughter of Leigh Ann Wallace and Michael Bowen and sister to Kaylee, Breanna, Karsyn and Kruz.

Trinady attended school through her life at Cainsville R-1, Verelle Peniston State School and Princeton R-5. Trinady loved all outdoor activities. She also loved all animals. Trinady enjoyed helping others and didn’t know a stranger.

She is survived by her parents, Leigh Ann Wallace of Princeton and Michael Bowen of Ridgeway; siblings, Kaylee (Jeremiah) Price of Stanberry, Breanna (Tylar) Clark of Stanber-

North R-III Board Of Education Discusses Recent Audit, Insurance Bids and Water Testing at Recent Meeting

The North Mercer R-III Board of Education met December 12 with all members present.

The agenda and minutes were approved with the following on the concent agenda: December bills; finance reports; boys/ girls basketball report; After School, Guidance, Nurse and Transportaion reports; At-Risk, Title I and PDC program evaluations.

The board received an CSIP update and Mr. Hall reported that the CSIP Plan will continue to be monitored.

In new business the audit was presented, which was conducted

by Conrad & Higgins, LLC, Chilicothe. The district complied with all requirements of Missouri laws and regulations.

Segregation of duties was once again the only difciency. The audit was

approved 6-0 with Makelia Hagan abstaining.

CPSK Insurance’s annual premium is up 15% to $61, 951 from last year. Mr. Hall is working on what can be done to lower the cyber insurance portion of the increase. The administration plans to shop for property insurance next year for best coverage and price.

Superintendent Hall reported that after a power cord on the Pepsi machine caught fire over the weekend. No damage was sustained other than the pop machine.

The board would like the fire department to have a key to the school and they discussed an emergency system.

A test was conducted on 29 water taps for lead and 23 came back good, including all water fountains and food prep water taps. The ice machine, shower taps and a sink on the second floor came back with high levels. A filter

machine and the lab recommended flushing the lines for longer periods before getting the next sample since these are not used very often. The six lines were retested after remedial actions were taken.

Hall reported there is a high possibility that open enrollment will be passed through legislation this spring. Also, no bus bids were received.

The Mercer County Soil & Water Conservation District is accepting applications for a full time District Technician Position The Technician will assist landowners with the implementation of state cost-share programs by designing cost-share practices using specialized designing software. Basic computer skills required. The applicant must be able to work outdoors under all types of weather conditions and travel over rough and uneven terrain. Other qualifications include strong computer skills, basic mathematical skills and good public relations with landowners. Technician will also be required to maintain rental equipment and other technical duties as assigned. Applicant must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and be able to work independently. Applicant must also have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check. Basic knowledge of agricultural practices or the ability to use surveying instruments is helpful.

Starting pay is $16.31 an hour, with promotion potential with testing and years of service.

A 12th birthday party for Damien Chaney was held December 16th (his birthday is the 12th) in Chillicothe at Extreme racing and family fun center. They enjoyed go carts, video games, and cake.

The CWF of the Christian Church met Thursday, December 14th with worship by all and refreshments by all.

Several plates of Christmas cookies were made and delivered around town.

20th Century Club met Thursday evening with Carolyn Ross as the hostess. Members brought refreshments and took part in a program. The group played

bingo for some surprising gifts. Club will vacation until March 20, 2024.

Christmas is God’s Extraordinary Opportunity

by Dr. Glenn Mollette Christmas was bleak when I was fourteen years old. My father had fallen off the roof our barn while trying to make a repair. He was severely injured. His hospital and home recovery rook months. As a coal mining family, we lived financially tight in the best of times. Although farming and gardening often got us over the hump. With no paycheck coming into our household for several months, I have no clue how my mother and father kept the lights burning.

My mother worked only briefly outside of the home and it wasn’t during this critical time.

Christmas came and my father was recuperating but was still on crutches. We had a Christmas tree but there weren’t any packages. I understood.

I didn’t even think about Christmas gifts or packages or a Santa coming around. I knew it was not the best of times.

We did have food and the furnace was on and the fact that my dad was getting well gave us all a sense of optimism that things would eventually return to normal.

On Christmas Eve my mother surprised me by handing me a tiny package. “Thank you,” came from my lips, but I know I barely mumbled in disbelief. Ripping off the paper

I beheld a watch. It was my one and only Christmas gift. It was a simple gift but it was thrilling to me at that time. I knew it came with sacrifice and love. I remember the blessing I felt.

A year later I would celebrate Christmas as a new Christian. I would even share in my church family’s Christmas program. Two other teenagers and I sang, “We three kings of orient are bearing gifts we’ve traveled so far.” We walked down the aisle of our church in bathrobes and weird looking crowns as we approached Mary, Joseph and the Christ child in the manger. It was all so simple but filled the greatest need of my heart.

I remember that simple Christmas program. I remember the fellowship and love of the church.

I remember the delight I felt in my Christian infancy. I remember that my dad was physically healed and doing well. I thought about how great life really was. I remember the blessings.

Today, I continue to count the blessings. The greatest blessing of all is God’s gift to us, his Son. We celebrate his birthday once again. Hopefully, we won’t lose sight of what Christmas is about.

COLUMBIA FALLS, ME and ARLINGTON, VA — December 16, 2023 — National Wreaths Across America Day took place at over 4,225 participating locations across the country, including Arlington National Cemetery. Santa Claus Cleared to Spread Christmas Cheer

Missouri Department of Agriculture approves livestock movement permit for nine healthy reindeer.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn and Missouri State Veterinarian Dr. Steve Strubberg have approved livestock movement papers for nine special reindeer. Mr. Santa Claus from The North Pole applied for the permit this week, providing proof of the healthy herd through a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection signed by licensed veterinarian Dr. Hermey Elf. Team leader, Rudolph, underwent additional testing to prove he’s the most famous reindeer of all.

“We love to see Santa recognize so many on his nice list throughout Missouri this year,” said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. “Santa’s elves have been working hard to provide toys for all children. We’re excited that our team gets to ensure all of Santa’s reindeer are ready for flight and gifts get delivered across the Show-Me State this Christmas.”

Mr. Claus, his sleigh and nine reindeer for flight starting the night before Christmas, with a few exceptions for early deliveries.

“Our veterinary staff works to allow timely movement of healthy animals across Missouri and the U.S.,” said Dr. Steve Strubberg. “Our team also recommends the reindeer consume healthy rations of Missouri grass hay. We encourage Missourians to make hay available for Santa’s reindeer, in addition to milk and cookies for Santa.”

Northwest to honor legacy of MLK with Celebration Week activities Jan. 15-20

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion will commemorate the work of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with its annual Celebration Week, beginning Monday, Jan. 15.

The week’s activities are free and open to the public Jan. 15-20, including a Peace Brunch and social justice teach-ins.

“For me, it’s not just about attending events during MLK week,” Dr. Shay Malone, assistant vice president of diversity and inclusion, said.

December 14, 2023 Andy became the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Mercer County and engaged in private practice. Daughters Amy and Carrie were born in 1974 and ’76, and Andy and Darlene raised their four children close to Lake Paho until their divorce.

Andy served 17 years as Prosecuting Attorney for Mercer County and in the private practice of law. Andy was appointed Associate Circuit Judge of Mercer County in 1992, and after serving for 9 years, he was elected Circuit Judge of the 3rd Judicial Circuit in 2000 and served as the Presiding Judge from 200006. Andy started the 3rd Circuit Drug Program when he became Circuit Judge in 2000. In 2005, the program received national recognition when Judge Krohn accepted the Sen. Harold Hughes Memorial Award from the National Rural Institute on Alcohol and Drug Abuse at a conference in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

Judge Krohn was very proud of the Drug Court Program, now referred to as the 3rd Circuit Treatment Court Program. In fact, Andy had a Drug Court graduate speak at his retirement reception when he retired as judge.

Andy was proud of the fact that when he was Circuit Judge, the 3rd Judicial Circuit received for the first time the Daniel J. O’Toole and Permanency Awards, “In Recognition of Excellence in Service

by Providing Timely Justice to the Public having achieved Case Processing Time Standards Criteria.” These awards were presented personally by members of the Missouri Supreme Court. The 3rd Circuit also received awards for the Juvenile Courts (Permanency Award) Andy presided over as Circuit Judge in the four counties comprising the 3rd Circuit Mercer, Grundy, Harrison and Putnam Counties.

Following retirement as a judge, Andy joined his son Matthew at the Andereck Evans Law Firm in Trenton as “of counsel” status where he practiced law for five years until Matt was elected judge in 2014. Andy continued working at the Firm working part-time until a couple of years ago.

In 1985, after a courtship, Andy married widow Connie (Deegan) Renfro.

So, Connie, Steven, Lesley and Seth joined the family where we truly became one family and remain so today. Connie took up most of Andy’s hobbies of hunting, fishing and camping and she became quite good at all of them.

Connie retired from hunting after harvesting the largest buck ever shot by a family member on their farm. When Andy travelled for training as a judge and Connie always accompanied him.

They enjoyed travelling together, especially when Andy’s best friend, Floyd Anderson, took them to places like Colorado, Cabo San Lucas or on a cruise on his big yacht up the East Coast. Andy and Connie enjoyed doing everything together.

They often sang together while traveling in the car to their favorite tunes by artists like Roy Orbison or Neil Diamond, and they sounded quite good as a duet. They shared a lot of laughs and good times. Andy was proud of and loved his family, including his children and grandchildren.

Andy was involved in his community and is a past President of the Princeton Rotary Club.

He started the Youth Turkey Calling Contest which the Club has continued to hold each spring for area youth. He also initiated the youth football program at Princeton. Andy and Connie enjoyed attending their kid’s ballgames together where some years they at-

tended over 100 games in a year. Andy loved deer, turkey and quail hunting. He enjoyed fishing, tying flies for fly fishing, reloading ammunition, reading, watching movies, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and the Mizzou Tigers play. Andy loved experiencing deer camp with his family and kids.

He enjoyed teaching his grandkids about hunting and imparting his wisdom about life. Andy also loved his Catholic Faith and church, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Princeton where he and Connie attended together.

Andy is survived by his wife, Connie of the home; son Steven Renfro and wife Lila; daughter Jennifer Krohn-Siemer & her son Tyler; daughter Lesley Willson and husband Brad – children Elizabeth and Zach; son Matthew and his wife Kelly and their children Logan, Lauren & Landon; daughter Amy Krohn and her partner Karrie - sons Ayden and Eian; daughter Carrie Ebert (Krohn) & husband Chris & their children Connor, Carson, Corigan & Caden; and son Seth & his wife Melissa and their children Mary Jane, Deegan, Adeline & Juliana.

Andy was preceded in death by his parents, his

brothers John and wife Marilyn Krohn; Frank Krohn; and Andy’s baby sister Jeanne Haynes and her husband James; and Andy’s Aunt Vera and Uncle Jack Goodman.
