PC Café/Meals on Wheels Part of Subaru Share the Love Event

Putnam County Senior Center/ Meals on Wheels Putnam County will once again be part of the Subaru Share the Love Event Nov 16th – Jan 2nd.

As part of a national partnership with Meals on Wheels America, Subaru of America, Inc. and its retailers will donate a minimum of $300 to charity, like Meals on Wheels, for every new vehicle leased or sold

from November 16, 2023, to January 2, 2024.

Since the Subaru Share the Love Event began in 2008, Subaru and its participating retailers have donated more than 4.3 million meals and helped provide friendly visits to seniors being served by local Meals on Wheels programs across the country. JEFFERSON CITY – At 11:00 a.m. on December 16, 2023, volunteers will lay wreaths on more than 20,000 graves in Veteran Cemeteries across Missouri to honor our nation’s heroes as part of Wreaths Across America. Five Missouri Veteran Cemeteries will be participating in this event.

“This event is so special every year,” said Missouri Veterans Commission Executive Director Paul Kirchhoff. “I encourage everyone to come on out to one of our cemeteries on December 16 and participate.”

Wreaths Across America started in 1992 when the Worcester Wreath Company began donating wreaths to be placed at the headstones in Arlington National Cemetery. Building on that tradition, in 2006, Richard Bavender received the quilt of valor during the 2023 Veterans the company began doDay Assembly held at the Putnam County High School. The Shepherd’s Call

The Microcosm of Christian Life Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus reads like a microcosm of the Christian life. (Matthew, Chapters 1-3) Long before Jesus was born, God announced His coming through the prophets.

The prophetic announcements were never time specific but on occasion included references to location. In his birth account, Matthew included the prophecy of Micah spoken hundreds of years earlier, “Thou, Bethlehem of Judaea, are by no means least among the rulers . . . out of you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people.” (Micah 5:2) Then Matthew tells of the divine/human interaction concerning Jesus’ birth. Angels announce His birth: (1) To Mary, who finds the announcement difficult to believe but is assured by the angel; (2) To Joseph, an angel reports his betrothed is with child. Joseph doubtless feels betrayed until the angel explains it to him; (3) To the shepherds, a chorus of angels sang the quiet news. In faraway places, God used a language kings could understand---a star---to herald Jesus’ birth. The announcement to the kings is interesting.

Given the information of the Bible and the geography of the first century world, the star may have appeared to the kings as

much as two years prior to Jesus’ birth.

As always, when good happens, evil appears. Through the kings, the very people God has invited, wicked King Herod learns of the young king’s birth. He seeks His whereabouts and plots His demise.

But wait, the Lord warns Joseph in a dream to relocate. Take your family to Egypt. Egypt was a common sanctuary for troubled Jews. Given these divine instructions, one could easily assume God will always protect the child from harm. Not so.

We must not miss the enormity of this event. It is not just the birth of a child; it is the incarnation, God becoming man and entering earth. If you or I were God, wouldn’t we make a big deal of this so no one could miss it. No, Christianity is not an outside to inside event. It begins inside the heart as quietly as a new birth, then grows.

Some herald and encourage it, others deny it and oppose it. Since it is born of God, we may think He will shield us from all harm. He has not promised a safe journey, not even for His own Son. Instead, He has promised to walk with us.

Remember, we said last week, “His name is Immanuel, God with us.”

Our Ever-Changing Christmas Story

By Dr. Glenn Mollette Christmas is always changing. The biblical story never changes but your story is always changing. How we celebrate and view the story of Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus may change throughout life.

We view the story one way as children but then the story matures as we age.

We all have a lot of Christmas stories. I remember a large family.

My mother came from a large family as did my dad. They all had children so the total number of family we felt connected to was great.

The years have passed by and my mother and father have passed as have all their siblings and many of their children. The people we related to, heard from and spent Christmas with has changed. They no longer exist. Many of us have lost spouses and buried children and thus our

ily. Hopefully they had a few easier Birthday celebrations for Jesus in the years ahead. Although it seems they may have had many more difficult ones as Jesus’ father Joseph soon disappeared from the Biblical narrative. We don’t know if Joseph died or left but his absence had to be a hardship on Mary and her family.

The story of the first family of Christmas was filled with ups and downs. What Jesus would face later in life was excruciating for his mother and siblings and certainly for him. The end of Jesus’ life story is the best part. The story for Jesus ends well. He was abused, humiliated, lived-in poverty, executed but came out of his tomb as the living son

of God. According to the scriptures he was seen by hundreds of people.

The person who had to be more thrilled than all in seeing Jesus after his death had to be his mother. The way she would experience and celebrate Christmas, her son’s birthday, would forever be changed. Her Christmas story became an amazing story of victory, triumph and great hope.

Her story changed and it got better.

My prayer for us all is that we each will experience hope, peace and victory in our ever-changing Christmas story.

Christmas has changed.

The story of Christmas is the same but it’s not the same. For some of us we have a difficult time even recognizing Christmas. What once brought us laughter, joy and even peace may no longer exist.

How you spend Christmas this year may be a distant memory next year. What you may dread or enjoy this Christmas may not even be possible next year.

In reality, very few of our Christmases ever look totally the same.

Finances change. Jobs changes. Health changes.

Death robs us of loved ones. Our residences sometimes change.

Firsts

When we lose a loved one, there are always those “firsts.” The first Thanksgiving without them; the first birthday or anniversary without Kevin Collins them; and the first Christmas without them.

The first Christmas after my Mom died the family was together and we counted heads for chairs around the table. We miss counted and had one chair to many - an empty chair. My first thought was sadness, but then I realized Mom was still there with us, even if her chair was empty.

Ashcroft Visits Every Missouri County for Seventh Consecutive Year Jefferson City, Mo. — Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft recently concluded his seventh consecutive year of visiting each of Missouri’s 114 counties.

“I’ve made it a priority every year to personally visit each county in the state to talk with Missourians; from county officials to students, business owners to farmers,” said Ashcroft. “Missouri is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

It’s a privilege to represent the hard-working people of our state.”

This year Ashcroft visited public libraries across the state, meeting with library directors and board members about how to improve services.

Through the Missouri State Library, Ashcroft was able to award 146 grants totaling over two million dollars and said, “Our public libraries are vital to our communities: they help all of us. These funds allow our libraries to continue offering key services and expanding programs for their patrons.”

Also, this year Ashcroft visited several schools meeting hundreds of students speaking about civics, leadership and state gov-

ernment. Ashcroft added, “Our students are the leaders of tomorrow. It is imperative that we give them the opportunities to excel and thrive.”

As the chief elections official for the state, Ashcroft met with county clerks and other local election officials throughout Missouri. “I swore an oath to fairly administer Missouri’s elections. I believe maintaining good relationships with our local election officials is key to running successful elections,” Ashcroft said.

Ashcroft toured cattle ranches, corporate farms and other agribusinesses promoting economic development and the Business Services Division within his office. The secretary said, “Agriculture is the backbone of our state – it exemplifies core virtues like determination, hard work, innovation; it builds character and self-worth and it promotes family values.”

“From Atchison to Pemiscot, McDonald to Clark, Missouri is a beautiful state. I love visiting every corner and talking with Missourians about ways to make our state even better – that’s the best part of my job,” added Ashcroft.

Avoid a Home Fire Over the Holidays To avoid a fire in your home over the holidays; follow these Red Cross decorating safety steps Most candle fires occur during December COLUMBIA, MO (Dec. 7, 2023) — The holidays are a wonderful time to get everyone together. Unfortunately, they can also mean a greater risk of a fire in someone’s home.

This holiday season, the American Red Cross of Central and Northern Missouri encourages everyone to follow simple steps to prevent home fires from holiday decorations.

“December is the peak time for home fires involving candles and holiday decorations,” Rebecca Gordon, Executive Director, Red Cross of Central and Northern Missouri. “Help protect your family by using battery-operated candles and practicing your two-minute escape plan with everyone in your household.”

HOLIDAY DECORATING SAFETY TIPS Follow these safety tips and visit redcross. org/fire for more information. You can also download the free Red Cross Emergency app by searching “American Red Cross” in app stores. *If you must use candles, keep them away from anything that could burn, and place them out of reach of pets and children. Never leave burning candles unattended. *Check all holiday light cords to ensure they aren’t frayed or broken.

Don’t string too many strands of lights together — no more than three

per extension cord. *Ensure outside decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard. *If buying an artificial tree, look for a fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat.

Never use electric lights on metallic trees. *If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and keep it watered. To test if the tree is fresh, bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off. *Don’t light the fireplace if hanging stockings or other decorations on the mantel. *Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year. If you cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or are physically unable to install one, the Red Cross may be able to help. Larry Lutz

Larry Lutz, 86, of Seymour, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 4, 2023.

Larry Lee Lutz was born in Harris, Missouri, on April 4, 1937, the eldest son of Louis and Dorothy (Klinginsmith) Lutz.

He attended schools and graduated from Unionville High School in 1955. He then attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, Missouri, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Education.

Larry married Marie Baker in 1958, and to this union was born Thomas, Jeffrey, and Kimberly. He later married Jan Clontz and gained a daughter, Bonnie, and two sons, Jim and Tim. Larry and Jan designed and built the timber frame home that Larry still lived in at the time of his death.

Larry was instrumental in developing one of the first high school vocational programs in the state in Hannibal, Missouri. He then worked in vocational education as director at the state level before moving to Camdenton, Missouri where he designed, built, and was director of the Lake area Vo-tech school.

He had a knack for setting up these programs to make them hands on and more interesting for students. Larry was a key mentor in helping the careers for tens of thousands of young individuals learning life skills. He also enjoyed teaching his kids, grandkids, and others who wanted to learn about woodworking, gunsmith, and blacksmithing. He was an active member of BAM association.

He loved making blacksmith hearts to give away as well as cut roses from his garden. Larry loved to go canoeing and fly fishing when he was younger. In later years Larry enjoyed spending time with Amber Michael and take small trips in his Mazda Miata whenever possible. He also enjoyed going with Jeff to check cattle and help with projects in the machine shop.

Larry is survived by his children, Thomas (Debbie) Lutz of Jefferson City, Missouri; Jeffrey (Sandy) Lutz of Powersville, Missouri; and Kimberly (Jim) Hamilton of Houston, Texas. His five grandchildren are Wendy (Jesse) Bruemmer, Daniel (Julia) Lutz, Eric (Nicole) Lutz, Nicole (Tyson) Polsdofer, and Jessica (Nathan) Wells.

Larry is survived by 11 great grandchildren: Elijah, Jeremiah, and Adelina Bruemmer; Elexa and Myles Lutz; Peyton Lutz, Cody and Emily Polsdofer; and Tyne, Royce, and Lawrence Wells.

Louie Casady, 81, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Raymond Louidene Casady was born at home in Worthington, Missouri, on December 23, 1941, the son of Gilbert and Sarita (Hogg) Casady. He was reared and lived most of his life in the Worthington area. Louie farmed, logged, operated a sawmill, and ran the grocery store in Worthington. He married Janice (DeCook) Campbell on January 13, 1980, and they lived together on the farm in rural Worthington all their married life. Louie liked to play cards and horseshoes, and he was an

Louie’s two great grandchildren are Delila Casady and Edward Koch. He is also survived by two sisters, Loretta (Kenneth) Gates, and Edith (friend Steve) Ruggles.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents and his uncle and aunt, Irvin and Iris Hogg.

Graveside services for Louie were at the Lone Pine Cemetery on Saturday, December 9, 2023.

Justin Ray VanGenderen, 34, of western Putnam County passed away on December 4, 2023 Justin VanGenderen was born in Salt Lake City, UT, on March 19, 1989, the son of Daniel and Deborah (Blaine) VanGenderen. On June 18, 2016, Justin married Brittney Taylor in Galt, MO. Justin was a farmer, specializing in both row cropping and cattle.

Justin is also survived by both parents; sisters, Misty Clapham, Kristy Blanchard and husband James, Stephanie Twenter and husband Jacob, and sister-in-law Brianna Taylor. His surviving brothers are Jerod VanGenderen and wife Lisa, Ryan VanGenderen and wife Emily, and brother-in law, Bradley Taylor. Surviving nephews are Damien, Ashton, Ethan, Hesston, Blaine, Tatum, and Bryson; nieces, Katie, Sheyanne, Sammy, Raelynn, Scout, Reveah, and Embrilee.

He is also survived by his Grandma Janice.

Dealing with Grief During the Holidays

By Carrol Davenport, Coordinator Spiritual Care & Bereavement Services, Hospice of Northeast Missouri It’s the most wonderful time of the year, unless you are mourning the loss of someone you love. The loss of someone we love is always hard, but the expectation of joyful celebrations at the holidays can magnify grief and sadness.

So, what do we do to move through a season of holiday celebrations that often focuses on gathering with family and friends?

It can help to acknowledge to yourself and others that this season will be different and difficult.

It’s ok to change the way you celebrate. Traditions can change, and sometimes celebrating in a different way or place can soften the sadness.

Give yourself permission to skip any holiday gathering that feels too hard. Try to let go of any guilt surrounding not doing what you have always done. If you have lost a loved one, life is forever changed and you will likely need to make some changes to adjust

to the loss.

If you are supporting someone who has had a loss, be present to them in way that gives them permission to be sad rather than trying to cheer them up. Let yourself be comfortable with whatever emotions come. Let them know it’s ok to talk about their loved one. If you are hosting a gathering with many family and friends, invite everyone to bring a photo of a loved one no longer with them. Provide a small table with a lighted candle for everyone to display their photo.

Whether you are mourning a loss or supporting someone, remember pain and joy can coexist, and it’s ok to feel and express both.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol wishes everyone a merry and safe Christmas. One way for it to be merry is for everyone to arrive at their holiday celebrations safely. Remember to wear your seat belt, obey all traffic laws, pay attention, and please, don’t drive impaired.

Over the 2022 Christmas holiday, there were 1,017 traffic crashes statewide. In those crashes, four people were killed and another 318 were injured. This year’s traffic crash counting period begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 22, and ends at 11:59 p.m.

Travelers are reminded that holiday drivers will affect traffic patterns. If you’re planning a trip during the holiday, please keep this in mind. Troopers encourage motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Please obey all traffic laws, and if alcohol is part of your holiday, designate a sober driver. Every driver can help make our roadways safer this holiday season.

USDA Now Accepting Applications for Farm Loans Online

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched an online application for Direct Loan customers. More than 26,000 customers who submit a Direct Loan application each year can now use an online, interactive, guided application that is paperless and provides helpful features including an electronic signature option, the ability to attach supporting documents such as tax returns, complete a balance sheet and build a farm operating plan. This tool is part of a broader effort by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) to streamline its processes, improve customer service, and expand credit access.

“The Biden-Harris Administration is working hard to make it easier for farmers and ranchers to get the loans they need to keep growing food, fiber, and fuel for our country,” said Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small. “Online services are commonplace in commercial lending, and with USDA Farm Service Agency’s new online loan application feature, it is now easier for producers to get the financing they need to start, expand, or maintain their farming and ranching operations.”

The online farm loan application replicates the support an applicant would receive when completing a loan application in person with an FSA Farm Loan Officer, while continuing to provide customers with one-on-one assistance as needed. This tool and

other process improvements allow farmers and ranchers to submit complete loan applications and reduce the number of incomplete and withdrawn applications.

Through a personalized dashboard, borrowers can borrowers track the progress of their loan application. It can be accessed on farmers.gov or by completing FSA’s Loan Assistance Tool at farmers.gov/loan-assistance-tool. To use the online loan application tool, producers must establish a USDA customer account and a USDA Level 2 eAuthentication (“eAuth”) account or a Login.gov account. For the initial stage, the online application tool is only available for producers who will be, or are currently, operating their farm as an individual. FSA is expanding the tools availability to married couples applying jointly and other legal entities in 2024.

Farm Loan Improvement Efforts FSA has a significant initiative underway to streamline and automate Farm Loan Program customer-facing business processes. For the over 26,000 producers who submit a Direct Loan application to FSA annually, and its 85,000 Direct Loan borrowers, FSA has made improvements this year, including: A simplified direct loan paper application, reduced from 29 pages to 13 pages.

In the second round of the Tri-Rivers Classic Tournament at Schuyler County, the Midgets breezed by the Milan Wildcats 71-46 to advance to the championship game against Schuyler County, which they won in overtime 59-54. The Midgets outscored the Wildcats 2117 in the first quarter and held a commanding 4023 lead at the half, which they improved on in the final half for the win.

American Legion Auxiliary Assembled Christmas Gift Baskets for Veterans at Care Center and Bristol Manor Karley Seaton off the steal and to the bucket in the win over the Novinger Lady Wildcats.

On Tuesday, December 5, the Lady Midgets hosted the Novinger Wildcats.

Scoring was slow to start and Novinger got the first points on the board, but the Lady Midgets held a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. By the half, PC was ahead of Novinger 23-17. Out of the locker room, PC continued to play a tough defense and outscore the Wildcats to secure the 58-33 win.

Emma Whitlock led the Midget scoring with 17 points and provided an assist. Whitlock also led the team in rebounds with nine (seven offensive, two defensive) and added a pair of deflections and three steals.

Karley Seaton scored 11 points and provided five assists. Seaton pulled down five rebounds (three offensive, two defensive), led the team in deflections with six and added a steal.

A Simple, Healthy Boost to Winter Comfort Foods

By Dr. Graham A. Colditz, Siteman Cancer Center It’s the time of year when we’re drawn to comfort foods. As the days get shorter and hats and coats take center stage in the closet, many of us seek out dishes that warm us up.

While comfort foods vary, they commonly include casseroles, soups, stews and noodle dishes, among others. They’re often familiar foods we may have grown up with or been introduced to at pivotal times in our lives. During the colder months, they can feel as much a part of the season as spiced apple cider and hot chocolate.

At the same time, many comfort foods aren’t the healthiest of choices. They can be high in unhealthy fats, calories and refined grains, and have few nutritious vegetables.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have them, but it may be healthiest to keep some dishes on the occasional list, rather than the regular menu.

When we do enjoy some of our favorites, though, one easy way to give them a health boost while also keeping their familiar flavors is to use whole-grain noodles in place of standard refined-grain noodles. This can work well in stroganoffs, many casseroles, macaroni and cheese, lasagna, noodle soups, stir-fries with noodles, and pasta dishes.

While Americans are eating slightly more

whole grains than before, most of us still fall short of recommendations that at least half of the grains we eat each day be whole grains. Switching out the types of noodles we use can be a simple way to work toward that goal.

And there can be real benefits to doing so.

Whole grains are filled with fiber and many other important nutrients that get removed to make refined grains such as white flour and white rice. Studies show that eating more whole grains can lower the risk of weight gain, diabetes, heart disease and cancer – and may even help us live longer.

You can usually find whole-grain noodles right in the pasta aisle, and they come in an increasing number of varieties and shapes that fit perfectly into many traditional recipes. While these noodles are most commonly made from whole wheat, others are made from brown rice, quinoa and other grains.

State Education Board Takes Action to Expand Pre-K Access

Jefferson City, MO — On Tuesday, the State Board of Education approved an emergency rule and proposed rulemaking to allow more education pathways for lead teachers in pre-kindergarten programs receiving state grant funds.

Last year, the legislature approved $26 million in new funding for grants to childcare programs to provide pre-K to 4-year-olds, prioritizing funding for children who qualify for free-orreduced price lunch. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) reported that 19% of the $26 million in pre-kindergarten grant funds were awarded to the first round of applicants in October.

Expanding access to high quality pre-K education has been a top priority for Governor Parson and his administration. DESE’s actions on Tuesday support the priority. “For our state to be successful, our students must be successful, and we know the education of Missouri’s kids must start early,” Governor Mike Parson said. “That’s why we’ve made historic investments to ensure families have access to quality early learning programs for their children. We applaud the State Board of Education for taking ad-

ditional measures to mitigate teacher workforce barriers and help maximize early childhood education opportunities for Missouri families.”

“In engaging with childcare providers throughout the state, the existing teacher qualification requirements remained the greatest barrier to accessing or even applying for the funds,” said Casey Hanson, deputy director for Kids Win Missouri, a statewide advocacy coalition focused on advancing policies that improve child well-being. “We commend the State Board of Education and the Office of Childhood for moving swiftly to address some of the implementation challenges around the Missouri Quality Pre-K grants for child care programs, so that more programs children and families can access high-quality pre-K.” Previously, the program required teachers to have a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or early childhood special education and hold a teacher’s certificate. The rule approved Tuesday will still include a bachelor’s degree with specialization in early childhood education as a top standard, but will also allow lead teachers to have an associate’s degree while they work to earn their bachelor’s

degree. The new qualifications align with standards approved by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

“Aligned applauds DESE’s proactive efforts to address barriers hindering childcare providers from accessing grant funding for early childhood programs. The Department collaborated with advocates to devise a solution that upholds high-quality standards for pre-K educators while offering flexible options to expand the childcare supply,” said Linda Rallo, Vice President for Aligned, an organization of business leaders focused on workforce issues.

The emergency rule will go into effect in January 2024 and the pro-

posed rulemaking for a permanent version of the rule will run concurrently, but will require public input and comment before being finalized.

October 2023 polling showed that 86% of voters believe early childhood education helps kids succeed in school.

On December 1, the first day of bill filing for the 2024 legislative session, Sen. Lauren Arthur (D-Kansas City) filed SB 743 and Rep. Brenda Shields (R-St. Joseph) filed HB 1486, both of which would provide funding for school districts to support pre-K education for kids.

DESE included funding for the Missouri Quality Pre-Kindergarten grants for childcare programs in its FY25 budget request.

Protect Plants from Winter Damage If left unprotected, some plants will suffer winter damage or be winter killed. Some of these include strawberry plants, rose bushes, young, thin barked trees and lavender.

“Mulch strawberry plants with loose straw at a depth of about 4 inches to protect the crowns over the winter.

It is recommended to wait until temperatures have reached 20 degrees three days in a row before mulching. Since we have already had nighttime temperatures in the teens, mulch strawberry plants now if you have not already done so,” says Jennifer Schutter, MU Extension Field Specialist in Horticulture. Leave straw mulch on until spring, typically the last week of March or first part of April.

Schutter also states that another important task to be done now is wrapping young, light-colored, thinbarked trees like maples, crabapples and fruit trees. Have you seen maple trees with splits down the trunk and peeling bark? Every year I

This injury is known as sunscald or Southwest injury. It is a type of winter injury that affects many young trees every year. The living cells just inside the outer bark which is mostly phloem and cambium tissue, are damaged by fluctuations in day to night temperatures during the winter months. Phloem is a vascular tissue that carries food throughout the tree.

The cambium is located just inside the phloem and outside the wood or xylem tissue and is a thin layer of cells that divides to form new phloem to the outside and new xylem to the inside.

Landscape design with Southwest injury in mind can also help. Susceptible trees should be planted on the north and east sides of homes or buildings or near evergreens so their lower portions will be shaded in winter.

According to Schutter, other garden tasks to do now include protecting rose bushes by mounding soil and mulch up about 12 inches around the base of the bush; cleaning, oiling and storing away garden tools; and putting away containers and garden ornaments to prevent cracking.

Joe Koenen, AgriBusiness Specialist (Mo Extension Ret.) DEADLINES I recognize whether you are a farmer or businessperson (or others) you are used to deadlines. I want to discuss those in a little more detail today related to farmers and landowners especially.

Deadlines are important in Agriculture as well as for others. Most are hard deadlines with consequences if they are not met. The first one of these is farm leases.

Written leases are not an issue since a deadline is on the contract (hopefully anyhow). If either party decides they wish to terminate, the date is set by which it must be done. Oral farm leases are much more complex here in Missouri. Termination must be given at least 60-days prior to the original date the lease was agreed upon.

That is a hard deadline but may be impossible to remember 10 years later. There is no set date here in Missouri so March 1 or September 1 is not going to work. If not done by the deadline (in writing), either side can force another year.

The second deadline for farmers is income taxes and forms. Information forms such as 1099NEC

and 1099MISC must be completed and sent to the IRS and individual no later than January 31.

The deadline to file your farm tax return (over 50% of gross comes from farming) is March 1 unless you pay estimated tax before that date. That is for cash basis taxpayers. Third, many government agencies such as Farm Service Agency (FSA) and other have deadlines that you must meet too. Lenders have deadlines for many of their clients too.

My point is deadlines are a part of life (believe me I had many for 43 years in extension) and so keep track and follow them as most all have consequences to not complying.

REMINDERS Do not forget Farmer’s Tax Guides are available at no charge at your county extension office or online at 2023 Publication 225 (irs. gov). They are a useful resource.

Your county extension office can assist you with many things including soil, manure, and feed tests. They have copies of guide sheets for a small fee, 9-1-1 driveway markers, and other publications too.

NEMR Hosts Tech Education

On Friday, December 1, 2023, NEMR’s Customer Service Representative and Marketing Assistant Gracey Gordon led a tech education workshop at the PC Cafe & Resource Center. At the workshop, they went over internet fraud, pop-up scams, and the benefits of streaming services. They had a great turnout, and NEMR enjoyed getting to spread scam awareness to the community and teach others about technology.

“Scams are unpreventable. There is not much we can do to stop them from happening; the best thing we can do is be prepared and remember to think about importance of internet safety.” says Gordon.
