An early morning fire on Thursday, November 30, fully engulfed the Unionville Print Shop owned by Pete and Lisa Schmidt. The Unionville Fire Department fought the print shop fire from both the ground and the air. Notice the sun dimly seen through the thick black smoke pouring from the building in the middle picture. The Unionville Fire Department and other emergency services were on the scene until early afternoon.

The sale will be held December 8 and 9 in the foyer of the library on the east side of the Unionville square. The sale begins at 9 a.m. Friday December 8 and concludes at noon on December 9, or when sold out.

“Eligibility hasn’t been adjusted for inflation, so fewer people who need it qualify, and when they do, their credit is smaller because they are higher on an income scale that was developed fifteen years ago.”

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages experienced Missouri birders to become citizen scientists by helping with the National Audubon Society’s 124th Christmas Bird Count (CBC) between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, 2024.

The CBC is an annual bird census where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada, and other countries go out over a 24-hour period on one calendar day to count birds between

Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. The data on winter bird populations helps track the long-term status of species and large-scale trends. Each CBC has a coordinator who assigns portions of a 15-mile diameter count circle to participants to count all birds seen and heard over a 24-hour period.

Missouri hosts about 20 CBCs. Learn more at audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-birdcount and contact the CBC organizers listed for details on the specific count circles.

Pearl Harbor Day

The generation that served the cause of freedom during World War II is disappearing.

Of course, there are still Kevin Collins many alive who remember that day that will live in infamy: December 7, 1941. My Mom was nine at the time. They had a party-line telephone with a certain ring to alert everyone to get on the line for important news. It was “two shorts and a long.” I well remember her telling that story. I hope we will continue to tell the story of the brave generation that saved the world.

The Shepherd’s Call

by Dr. H. Wade Paris Immanuel Immanuel is a beautiful name. I wonder why more people fail to name their sons Immanuel. Perhaps it assumes too much. Yet, in my lifetime I’ve had some friends whose parents were brave enough to name a son Immanuel.

Emmanuel McCall was serving on our Home Mission Board.

As an African American, his assignment was to bridge the racial gap in our churches. I invited him to lead a weekend revival in our church. As we did with all revivals, I sent his picture and a brief article to the local newspaper inviting folk to participate with us. I received hostile phone calls and grew concerned for his well-being while in my “care.” Years later, I told him of my fears.

He smiled and said, “You wasted your anxiety.

People would not have harmed me; they would have gone after you.”

Prior to his election as a congressional representative from Kansas City, Emmanuel Cleaver and I were pastoral colleagues. To gain approval of a building our church planned, I made multiple trips to the state capital to meet with committees. One legislator told me he questioned a statement I made and

consulted Representative Cleaver about it.

The legislator later told me, “Mr. Cleaver said, ‘If Wade Paris told you that, you can be sure it is true.’“ I was honored.

The Immanuel I hope to know best is Jesus.

Remember the angel of the Lord told Joseph Mary would give birth to a child. The angel even named the gender, a son, and gave the child a name---Immanuel, God with us. (Matthew 1:20ff) That is what I need, God be with me.

That is what I want, God with me. I pray for it every day.

Brother Lawrence, a seventeenth century French monk, speaking of “God with us” called it practicing the presence of God. He said he had learned to be aware of God’s presence in all that he did---“When I am in the kitchen washing pots and pans, and people are shouting, ‘Lawrence, do this; Lawrence, do that,’ I feel just as much in the presence of God as I do when I am on my knees at the Blessed Sacrament.”

I cannot claim Brother Lawrence’s success; but I am trying to be conscious of God’s presence in everything---great and small.

OFFICIAL COUNTY COURT MINUTES Now on this 13th day of November, 2023, it being the 2nd day of the October term of the Putnam County Commission, said Commission met at the office of the County Commission, where and when were present Robert Munden, Presiding Commissioner, Shane Bradshaw, Eastern District Commissioner, Gerald Owings, Western District Commissioner, and Christy Brooks, County Clerk.

Brain Isabelle, Gregory Rowe, and Tracy Rowe met with Commissioners to discuss 192nd Street in Elm Township.

One of the landowners has gates up on that road.

Mr. Isabelle wanted clarification that the road was still open and that he should be able to access it to get to his property.

Mr. Isabelle stated he must access his property through the Rowe’s and travel 8 miles around to get there whereas, if he could access the property

through the gated road, it would be about 1 ½ miles. Shane reviewed the state cart map and said road was shown on the state cart map; therefore, it is still a public road. Mr. Isabelle stated he has no problem with closing the road if he is granted an easement to get to his property. Shane stated that the easement is between the property owners. Ms. Rowe stated the landowner refuses to move the gates and she presented a statute regarding abandoned roads and asked why the gates have not been removed for years? Mr. Isabelle stated that he would like to see the road get closed and he obtain an easement to get to his property. Shane stated that as of right now, the road is considered an open road and a letter will be sent to the landowner to notify him that the gates have to be removed. If the gates are not removed within 30 days, the county will remove them. Shane state if Mr. Isabelle and the Row-

es would like the road to be closed, then they will need to get a petition to start the process.

All were in agreement to move forward with the above plan.

Snow removal bids were opened at 10:00 a.m. All Around Property Service presented a bid for the 2023-2024 snow removal for $70 per job stating that salt would be extra if he were to provide it. Gerald made a motion to accept the bid for $70 per job.

Shane 2nd. All in favor.

Motion passed.

Christy presented financials.

At 10:36 a.m., Gerald made a motion to go into closed session pursuant to Missouri Statutes RSMO 610.021 Subsection (1). Shane Bradshaw seconded the motion. All in favor.

Motion carried.

At 10:45 a.m. Shane Bradshaw made a motion to go out of closed session. Seconded by Gerald Owings. By roll call vote. All in favor.

Mary Brummer, Administrative Assistant to the Prosecutor, discussed an error with restitution paid to the county.

amount was overpaid by $606.92. The county will need to reimburse the P.A. Restitution Fund and Mary will reimburse the individual. Also discussed was the need for a credit card for Prosecutor’s office. The bank has requested a balance sheet from December 2022. Christy will get that to the bank.

Ken Shook, K.A. Shook Designs, and Tim Mehroff from Meyer Electric, met to go over change orders and acquire signatures. After reviewing the change orders, Shane mad a motion to sign the change orders. Gerald 2nd. All in favor. Motion passed.

Applications Available for 2024 Missouri Agribusiness Academy

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Agriculture is offering 30 high school students representing 4-H clubs and FFA chapters, as well as farm families, throughout Missouri the opportunity to explore careers in agriculture through the 2024 Missouri Agribusiness Academy (MAbA).

MAbA is a competitive program for sophomores interested in pursuing agriculture-related degrees and careers.

“The Missouri Agribusiness Academy is a unique opportunity for students interested in agriculture,” said Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn. “Each year, we see the students grow through their MAbA experience. The students learn how an agriculture career may be the right fit for them, all while making lifelong friends and industry connections.”

The students selected will participate in a yearlong program to

learn about the unique opportunities for careers in the Springfield area, volunteer at the Missouri State Fair and learn more about the agriculture industry in Jefferson City.

The 2024 schedule will be finalized in the spring and will include visits with industry and agribusiness leaders, as well as tours of their facilities.

Since 1988, the Missouri Agribusiness Academy has graduated more than 1,090 students through a competitive application and interview process. The first portion of the 2024 MAbA will be held June 3-7, and marks the program’s 37th year. Students interested in participating must submit an application by Feb. 1, 2024.

Obituaries David Wood

On Wednesday morning God called in a gas leak – David was on call. David Keith Wood, 60, of Unionville, MO, passed away on November 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by his wife and kids. He was preceded in death by his grandparents James and Helen Trent (Ross) and Mabel Wood, mother, Wanda (Trent)Wood, and his father Daymon Wood, and niece Kristen McReynolds.

David is survived by his wife Marilyn, his daughter KayLea and husband Andrew, his sons, Nolan, Riley, and Landon, as well as his grandchildren Hudson, Porter, and Griffen. His sister Debbie (Sonny) Wood and their son, brother Randy (Denise) Wood and their three children, and sis-

ter Rhonda (Norm) Davidson and her son and many nieces and nephews.

David was born on July 18, 1963, to Daymon and Wanda Wood.

He was the youngest of four siblings. He attended Putnam County schools. After school David went to work.

First at Hy-Vee in Unionville and then he entered the natural gas field. He started with Utility Consultants Incorporated in 1984 and spent the next 39 years in the industry.

He began his career as a meter reader and finished as Vice President at Utility Safety & Design, Inc. where he spent the last 22 years of his career.

He thoroughly enjoyed his job and the many relationships he built along the way.

David and Marilyn were married on July 19th, 1986, in Unionville where they built a home and raised their four kids.

David’s proudest moments in life came when celebrating his children and their accomplishments. They enjoyed travelling together, taking a family vacation to Branson, MO, every year.

David was a man of routines. Feeding his

cows, eating breakfast at the Sale Barn & drinking coffee at McCormack’s MFA every Saturday morning. He had many hobbies, some of which include side by side rides, traveling with family and friends, watching his kids at sporting events, playing with his grandsons, playing jokes on people, and spending time at the cabin he and his brother built from the ground up. David was also always up for a good game of cornhole!

In April, David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. This decision gave him great comfort over the last several months. Even though he didn’t want to go, he was looking forward to going Home and his family will look forward to meeting him again in Heaven.

David was a great husband to Marilyn, father to his children, papa to his grandsons and a dear friend to people all across the Midwest. He will be greatly missed by many.

David were held at 11 am at Playle & Collins Family Funeral Home on Monday, December 4, 2023. Visitation was from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Curtis Riley conducted the service with recorded musical selections “How They Remember You” and Beat You There.” Casket bearers were Tim Hodges, Loren Haines, Doug Kimmel, Mike McCormack, Allen Bowling, Ryan Boland, Dwaine McCormack, and Dana Mathes. Interment was at the Pherigo Cemetery.

The family requests any memorials in David’s name be sent to the Putnam County Fair Board or the Pherigo Cemetery. Both of these causes were important to David and he devoted countless hours to improving the fair for many years as well as serving on the boards of both. Donations may be entrusted to Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.

December 7, 1941 – George A. Whiteman from Sedalia was shot down as his plane took off from Hawaii. He became the first pilot killed in World War II. Whiteman Air Force Base near Sedalia is named in his honor.

December 8, 1896 – St. Louis police raided “Hop Alley,” the notorious area of opium dens in the old China Town district.

December 9, 1824 – Legislation was passed regulating the sale of liquor to Indians.

December 10, 1896 – A three-week survey of Missouri’s teachers found these results: Teachers did not like extreme styles of dress among their students.

That included bobbed hair, rolled stockings, elaborate headdress, and facial embellishments.

Dancing was also in disfavor.

December 11, 1965 – A lightning storm hit

Houston, MO and damaged street lights, home furnaces and electrical wiring. 250 rural telephones and 60 phones in Houston were knocked out. Scores of radio and television sets were damaged.

December 12, 1919 – The Iron County Register was reporting that people who kept goldfish in bowls would have to pay higher home insurance rates. A study in St. Louis had proven that the fish bowls acted as lenses for sunlight and could easily start fires in homes.

December 13, 1911 – Mrs. Helene Britton became the first female owner of a sports team to attend a Major League meeting. “Lady Bee’s” uncle died leaving the Cardinals to her. She went on to become a very active owner.

Jane Clark Princeton, MO: Emma Jane “Jane” Clark, a longtime resident of Mercer, Missouri, passed away peacefully, November 27, 2023, at Pearl’s II Eden for Elders in Princeton, Missouri, at the age of 92 years.

Jane was always ready to help someone out in need and was devoted to her family and friends.

Jane loved dogs and was a dog breeder for many years. Each summer she would spend hours in her flower beds and canning vegetables from the garden. She also loved collecting dolls and sewing on quilts. Every Christmas Eve she would have a big dinner with family and friends and every person would receive a small present and a card from “Grandma Jane.”

In each card she would write a message that would always end with, “Take one day at a time and lean on the good Lord.” And every meal of the day she would say a blessing for our food.

Jane was very caring and loved the Lord.

Jane was born December 17, 1930, the oldest daughter of John Seibert and Viola (Trenter) Jump, in Putnam County, Missouri. Her father died in 1940 and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Charles W. Stevens. On January 2, 1954, Emma Jane Jump married Wilbur D. “Jack” Clark in Unionville, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 26, 2010.

In addition, Jane is also survived by one sisterin-law, Donna Stevens; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Dolan and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather; husband Jack; three infant brothers, Oliver, John, and Floyd Jump; brother, Troy Stevens and sisters, Ollie and Ida Mae Stevens and Armenda Schlarbaum.

Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m.

Friday, December 1 at Roberson Funeral Home, Princeton, MO. Burial followed in West Liberty Cemetery, Putnam County, MO. The family received friends from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Foreman passed from this life on Friday, December 1, at the age of 62 after a brief illness.

Deana was born in Kirksville, Missouri, September 14, 1961, to Russell and Karen (Knapp) Vestal. She was united in marriage to Steve Foreman on March 17, 1984.

Deana enjoyed camping, going to yard sales, spending time with her family and friends, and spoiling her pets. She dedicated her life to taking care of others and worked many years as an in-home health aide.

Deana was preceded in death by her husband Steve, in June 2023; her father Russell Vestal; father-in-law and motherin-law Jack and Leona Foreman and nephew Joe Steflik.

Survivors include her son Travis (Selena) Foreman of Maryville, Missouri; her mother Karen Vestal of Unionville, Missouri; sister Stacy (Phillip) Martin

grandsons Kolton and Christian Foreman; sister-in-law Cindy (Gary) Steflik; nieces Gracie and Abbie Martin, Libby (Mike) Burdette, and Presley Martin; nephews Phillip and Brandon Martin; an honorary son, Mitchell (Amanda) Evans, whom she loved like her own; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and many great friends and neighbors.

She also leaves behind a faithful companion, their dog KC Jo. A graveside celebration of life will be held for Deana and Steve Foreman at a later date.

100 Years Ago This Week Taken from the front page of the December 5, 1923, edition of The Unionville Republican.

The largest shipment of stock, eighteen carloads, left the Unionville Depot. The shipment included 14 carloads of cattle and two each of horses and sheep.

Bricklayers who were to lay the brick for Putnam County’s new courthouse had arrived as had the brick and much of the stone for the building.

Over eight inches of snow was reported to have fallen on Thanksgiving. This snow fell exactly one month after the first big snow of the season.

Sewer work was continuing in earnest in Unionville. One digging machine had arrived and was in use and another was expected to arrive soon.

The DAR General John Sullivan Chapter regular meeting was called to order by Regent Margaret Szucs on 2:00 pm on November 17, 2023, at the Putnam County Library, Unionville, Missouri.

Regent Margaret Szucs welcomed everyone with the Chapter Procedures of Opening Ritual. Hazel Tipton led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the USA, Rhonda Webber led the American Creed, Connie Olson led the National Anthem and Joyce Long led the Pledge of Allegiance to the State of Missouri.

Kathryn Milner gave a report on a horse named “Reckless” who was awarded two

Purple Hearts for her service in the Korean War. She was the only animal ever awarded an official rank in the Marine Corps and earned the rank of staff sergeant.. Betty Sue Nowels informed the group to watch for deer since it is hunting season.

Connie Olson delivered the gifts to the veterans in Cameron, Missouri, that were gathered at the last meeting. We were reminded to be sure to enter our volunteer hours in the DAR program. In addition, we were informed that Elaine Miller had past away.

Connie Olson will be delivering the gifts that the members donated for our veterans here in Unionville on November 29, 2023, at 3:00 pm.

For our Community Service Award we voted to have a sign made that will be awarded to anyone nominated and have the sign posted in their yard. Therefore, if you know anyone deserving of recognition for what they do for their community please let us know by contacting any of the members above.

Marla Mestad spoke on the local butterflies, habitat and flowers that attract butterflies. She also handed out various pamphlets and seeds for native wildflowers.

Lady Midgets Advance in Tri-Rivers Classic

On Tuesday, November 28, the Lady Midgets faced off with Brookfield in the opening round of the sixth annual Tri-Rivers Classic at Schuyler County. The Midgets put the first scores on the board, but the Lady Bulldogs answered and led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. At the half, the Lady Bulldogs held a 19-14 lead. The Lady Midgets rallied in the third quarter outscoring Brookfield 20-8 to take a 34-27 lead and help secure the 41-39 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance Announces Reduction of Workers’ Compensation Rates for Employers in 2024

2024 will be the third year in a row rates have decreased in Missouri Jefferson City, Mo – The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) announces employers should see a reduction in workers’ compensation rates for the third year in a row, according to preliminary figures collected by DCI from the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI). The NCCI recently proposed an overall decrease of 7.5 percent for 2024 workers’ compensation loss costs.

The 7.5 percent decrease in loss costs between Jan. 1, 2023 and Jan. 1, 2024 is driven by data collected on an annual basis showing a decline in average indemnity and medical costs per lost time claim.

“Missouri businesses will be pleased to hear that on average, workers’ compensation rates should decrease for the third year in a row,” said Chlora Lindley-Myers, Director of the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance.

“It’s a testament to Missouri’s employers for continuing to make safety improvements in the workplace to protect their teams. A robust market with over 300 insurers actively competing for business in the workers’ compensation market gives businesses plenty of choices. I encourage Missouri’s employers to take advantage of this and shop around for the best rates.”

DCI provides an online rate checker to assist employers with comparison shopping.

Workers’ compensation was mandated in Missouri by state law in 1925 and is a “no-fault” insurance system that pays benefits to workers injured on the job to cover medical care, part of lost wages and permanent disability. In return, employers receive immunity from civil lawsuits by employees over such workplace injuries.

Employers meet their workers’ compensation obligation by purchas-

ing insurance or by becoming a state-certified self-insurer. DCI reviews and approves workers’ compensation insurance policy forms and rules.

The department also monitors workers’ compensation market competitiveness and oversees the “assigned risk pool” to ensure fair rates and good service.

Lady Midgets Start Strong, But Indians Prevail In the contest for third place in the Tri-Rivers Classic Tournament, the Lady Midgets faced the Clark County Lady Indians.

Clark County put the first two points on the board, but PC answered with six points to hold a 6-2 lead at the end of the first. Shooting warmed up for both teams in the second quarter, with the score at the half PC 22, CC 17. Coming out of the locker room, the Indians stepped up the pressure and the scoring.

At the end of the third the score stood at PC 30, CC 29. The Indians would go on to take the lead at the beginning of fourth quarter to seal a 46-36 win.

From two-point range the Midgets made 11 of 44 attempted (25%), while the Indians sank 21 of 43 (48.8%). From three-point range, the Midgets made three of 11 (27.3%) and Clark made one of nine (11.1%). From the line,

PC sank five of 10 (50%) and Clark one of eight (12.5%).

Jenna Knowles led the scoring for the Midgets with 13 points and provided an assist. Knowles accounted for three rebounds (one offensive, two defensive) and added a steal and three deflections.

Karley Seaton scored eight points and provided a pair of assists. Seaton led the team in steals with six and posted five deflections. Seaton also accounted for three rebounds Ione offensive, two defensive).

Allise Perkins scored six points and added a pair of assists. Perkins pulled down four defensive rebounds and added five deflections and four steals.

Emma Whitlock scored four points and provided an assist.

Whitlock led the team in rebounds with seven (two offensive, five defensive) and posted a steal.

Sammie Blanchard scored four points and added an assist.

Blanchard pulled down both an offensive and a defensive rebound and added three deflections and a pair of steals.

Loralei Fisher rounded out the scoring with a made free throw. On de-

fense Fisher pulled down three rebounds, stole the ball three times and added a deflection.

Madison McMillen recorded a steal, a deflection and an offensive rebound.

Tayla Turner pulled down both an offensive and a defensive rebound.

Groups Applaud Pre-filed Bills to Update Missouri Property Tax Credit, Help Older Adults & Missourians with Disabilities Stay in Their Homes Senior advocates from across the state applauded efforts to update Missouri’s Property Tax Credit, or “circuit breaker,” emphasizing how common-sense adjustments to the existing credit will help keep older adults and Missourians with disabilities who are living on fixed incomes stay in their homes.

The Missouri Property Tax Credit was meant to help these Missourians remain living independently in their homes by offsetting a portion of the cost of property tax. Unfortunately, neither income eligibility guidelines nor the size of the credit have been modified since 2008, so fewer people qualify for it, and the value of the credit itself has eroded over time.

“Every year, more and more of the very folks the credit was designed for are being left out,” said Jay Hardenbrook, Advocacy Director for AARP Missouri. “Income guidelines and credit amounts have fallen behind even inflationary increases, which the legislature can fix this year.”

“Aging adults deserve to live their best possible lives in the homes and communities of their choice,” said Julie Peetz, Executive Director of Missouri’s Area Agencies on Aging. “But

many aren’t getting the assistance they need to stay at home where they’ve raised their families.”

The credit is also vital to Missourians living with disabilities, who also often face higher costs for accessible housing. Although property taxes increase annually, the size of the credit is flat, and hasn’t increased since 2008. “The credit helps so many Missourians remain independent,” said Jeanette Mott Oxford, Manager of Public Policy & Advocacy at Paraquad. “Although it’s a modest credit, it’s significant to neighbors who need it to afford housing costs, technology, or other kinds of assistance to live independently.”

Representative Mark Matthiesen and Senator Tracy McCreery are both prefiling legislation to address these issues.

“Over the last several years, the cost of housing has grown exponentially, while our only program to help people with disabilities and low-income senior citizens afford to stay in their homes has remained outdated,” said Representative Matthiesen. “This legislation will provide vitally necessary assistance to those who need it most.”

Joe Koenen, AgriBusiness Specialist (Mo Extension Ret.) FARM INCOME TAX SCHOOLS Several of you know that for years (43 at least in my case) have provided education on farm producer and landowner income tax schools. I am going to discuss those today.

This year’s Farm Income Tax Schools will be held both in-person and online on the evening of Tuesday, December 12 from 6 to 9:00 PM or on Wednesday, December 13 from 1 to 4 pm. The locations on December 12 are Saint Robert, Montgomery City, Sedalia and Bolivar or online. December 13 sites are Maryville, Shelbyville, Saint Genevieve, Warsaw and Fredericktown and online. If you live in northern Missouri, Shelbyville is your only in person choice besides online. There is no cost to attend but you must pre-register (for materials and the link) on the extension website at www.extension.missouri.edu and go to events.

Topics covered include: information forms new requirements, drought sales of livestock rules, depreciation and expensing farm assets and sale and exchange of farm property. I hope some of you can attend online anyway.
