Ruth Wyland will perform at The Bixler 108 on Friday, November 3. Local Legends will kick off the two-days of live music with a performance on Thursday, November 2. While the season may be winding down at the Bixler 108 Listening Room, some of the best performances have been saved for last. This week features the Local Legends on Thursday, November 2, and Ruth Wyand on Friday, November 3. The Local Legends, consisting of Carolyn Vincent, Randy Kimple, Steve Head, Patricia Sharman, Stanley Knipfer and Theresa Hammett, need no introduction to the Unionville audience. They always play to a full house and this Thursday will be no exception. All the way from Kill Devil Hills on the outer banks of North Carolina, Ruth Wyand comes to the Bixler 108 Listening Room in Unionville, MO, for the first time on Friday, November 3. Wyand is anxious to share her unique guitar virtuosity with powerful finger picking, bottleneck slide and a warm alto voice to a new audience. Ruth plays and writes in all styles of American music, from blues to jazz, from rock to folk and from roots to country, with a portion
of Piedmont picking and bluegrass clawhammer thrown in. Ruth presents a mixture of originals with poignant lyrics as well as well-crafted instrumental arrangements of classics ranging from Doc Watson, Etta Baker, Jimi Hendrix, Leo Kottke to Thelonious Monk and Nina Simone. Each song, no matter how different, has a firm Ruth Wyand stamp of style on it. A multiple award winner at the International Blues Challenge and many other festivals and song writing competitions, Wyand holds a degree in music theory and composition from Stockton University (New Jersey). She owns and operates her own music school in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where she teaches guitar, voice, songwriting and music theory and she has toured extensively throughout the United States, Britain, New Zealand, Kuwait and France as a solo guitarist and singer. And now her tour brings her

Dakota Waugh, Putnam County R-I band director and girls golf coach, spoke to Rotarians last week. Senior band and golf team members accompanied Mr. Waugh: (L to R) Emma Dodsworth, Emma Whitlock, Abbie Koenen, Parker Stanley, Riley Miller, Jacob Daniel, Christian Baughman, and Mr. Waugh. Photo credit: Mary Comstock Submitted by Mary Comstock The first few months of the school year are jam-packed for Dakota Waugh. In addition to serving as the grades 6-12 band and choir director, he is also the girls golf coach, which is a fall sport. This year there were seven girls on the golf
team, including several girls who had never held a golf club prior to joining the team. For the first time, the team held several practices in the summer, similar to other sports. Girls interested in playing golf should visit with Coach Waugh. The school has some donated men’s clubs, but could use some donated
women’s clubs for the girls just starting out. Abbie Koenen was the team’s number one player, completing a fantastic high school golfing career. In addition to being selected as all-conference and all-district, Abbie has been a state qualifier all four years of high school. Last year she finished 6th in
Submitted by Mary Comstock A “Vintage Christmas” Winterfest will be held Saturday, December 2, around the Unionville square. The festival draws large crowds each year and new ideas have been added to make this year’s Winterfest a spectacular family event. Due to the generosity of sponsors, all Winterfest activities will be free. Sponsors pay $50 and a personalized vinyl sign is placed on the
courthouse two weeks prior to Winterfest. To become a Winterfest sponsor, contact Mary Comstock at 660-6266443. A Cutest Baby contest will be held this year for children through age 4. Registration will begin at 2:30 in the Bixler 108 building, with the contest to start at 3:30. Gold, silver, and bronze ribbons will be awarded to both girls and boys in four age categories. A Car Show will be
held on the square beginning at 3 p.m. All car show entrants are encouraged to participate in the parade, which will begin at 5:15. Several containers filled with holiday items will be placed around the square for a “How Many?” guessing game. The person guessing closest to the correct amount will win the con-

the state and although improving her game by several strokes this year, finished 7th; earning her all-state honors both years. Abbie is hoping to play golf at a college next year. The band finished their competitive marching season last weekend. During a week-long summer band camp, band members learned this year’s creative field show, Pirates of the Caribbean. The drumline, which is a separate class, took first place honors at a competition at Shelbina. Drum Major Emma Whitlock took first place at Shelbina for overall Drum Major of Parades and Field Show Drum Major.
