R-3 board hires math teacher for rest of year Purdun to teach grade 7-12 classes beginning Dec. 4, after special meeting held last Thursday PRESTON COLE Princeton Post-Telegraph

MERCER During their regular monthly on Tuesday, Oct. 10, the North Mercer County R-3 Board of Education held a closed session to discuss personnel. As a result, the board held a brief meeting last Thursday morning (Oct. 19) and employed a mathematics teacher the rest of the 2023-24 academic year. During the latter meeting, the board employed Kasen Purdun of rural Princeton will teach math classes for grades 7-12, starting Monday, Dec. 4. Purdun, a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, will replace Nancy Claycomb in the math position. Claycomb’s resignation was approved during the Oct. 10 meeting, pending her signing a separation agreement, Oct. 10 meeting Representing the city of Mercer, Randy Michael and Anthony McFee met with the school board to talk about landscaping options for the north side of the old preschool house, which is going to be moved. The ditch will need to be moved south, and moving an electric pole was discussed. Michael said the city would work with the school district. Superintendent Wade Hall will set up a meeting with Grundy Electric, the city and school district.

• The district’s CSIP (Comprehensive School Improvement Plan) committee met during September, with two goals being revised and another goal was adjusted. • Hall asked for, and received permission, to begin to seek bids for a new or used bus. The district will seek bids on a 53-passenger bus, with the bids to be placed in a sealed document and submitted by Dec. 1. Bids will be opened and discussed during the board’s December meeting. Board members wants information about how many miles the bus that will be traded in is driven annually, and maintenance costs. Hall said most buses come with two-year warranties. He also said there’s a “huge” push for electric buses. There is 100% reimbursement for districts that buy an electric bus through certain grant programs. Hall said that while he isnt sold on electric buses, he wanted to share information to the board. • Six policy updates were reviewed and approved, and one new policy was added. The new policy concerns the food service program. Policy updates involve the board secretary’s duties; counseling; employment references; programs for students who are homeless, migrant, English learners, See Lead testing, Page 7

Splendid season has sad ending

TERRI KELLY/Princeton Post-Telegraph

Princeton High School coach Mike Schmidli (third from left) spoke to a sad bunch of Tiger softball players after their season ended last Monday (Oct. 16) after Worth County rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 5-2 to eke out a 6-5 victory in the quarterfinals of the Class 1, District 8 tournament in Stanberry, Mo. The loss ended the Tigers’ school record of four-straight district titles and state tournament appearances. A story and more photos can be found on Page 2.

Highway Patrol urges Halloween for parents, children and partiers Special to the Post-Telegraph

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. The Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages everyone to have a safe Halloween. It’s that time of year when young ghosts, vampires, superheroes, and cartoon characters are planning their night of trick-or-treating. While some local events take place in large parking lots the weekend prior, many trick-or-treaters will be out on Halloween night. It’s imperative that drivers and pedestrians stay alert. Young children excited by Halloween could dart in front of a vehicle. Slow down and drive with extra caution. Expect an increase in the number of

slow-moving vehicles in neighborhoods as motorists pick up and drop off trick-or-treaters. Please be courteous and stay alert for trick-or-treaters of all ages. Distracted drivers are dangerous drivers - when you’re driving, keep your eyes on the road, not on your phone! Parents, please remind children to approach only familiar houses that are well-lit. Remind them they should never enter a stranger’s house or vehicle. Consider trick-or-treating with your children for their safety and because it’s a fun way to spend an evening. Give some thought to safety when choosing a costume. Consider using make-up rather than wearing

a mask, which can obstruct a child's vision making it difficult to see an oncoming car. A light-colored costume is easier for drivers to see at night and adding reflective tape to dark costumes makes them visible. Flame resistant costumes are encouraged. All trick-or-treaters are reminded to watch for traffic while they are out and about this Halloween. Remember to look both ways when crossing the street. Use sidewalks wherever possible and trick-or-treat while it is light outside. If you do go out after dark, increase your visibility by using a flashlight and wearing a light-colored costume. An adult should

always accompany small children, and older children should stay in groups. Halloween isn’t just for children. Many adults enjoy dressing up and visiting haunted houses or attending gatherings of friends. If you are driving to a costume party, make sure your costume doesn’t hamper

your vision. If you attend a Halloween party that includes alcohol, designate a sober driver for the trip home. Alcohol, even in small amounts, slows reaction time and dulls the senses. Driving after you've had alcohol could have a sad and possibly deadly result.

NO TIGER FOOTBALL THIS WEEK Many Missouri high school football teams begin postseason district play this week, in both 8-man and 11-man, but the Princeton Tigers aren’t one of them. The Tigers are the #3 seed in 8-man District 8, which is a five-team district. There is one game in that district this week, #5 Paris at #4 Knox County. The winner plays at #1 Schuyler County on Nov. 3, while Princeton will play at #2 North Shelby (Shelbyville) that night.
