This is no tall story
Colombian Edward Hernandez recently surrendered his Guinness World Record title to Azerbeijanian Afshin Ghaderzadeh, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. What is the title, you ask? It turns out that Ghaderzadeh is 2.7 inches shorter than the former record holder. He recently measured in as the shortest man on the planet at a height of 2 feet, 1.6 inches compared to Hernandez’ 2 feet, 4 inches. Ghaderzadeh was 1.5 pounds when he was born; he’s 20 years old now and weighs in at 14.3 pounds.
Woodpeckers love acorns
Exterminators were called in when the owners of a home in Sonoma County, Calif., started seeing maggots and mealworms coming out of a bedroom wall. At first the pest control technician assumed that a small animal may have found its way into the wall. But he discovered that woodpeckers had been poking holes in the home’s chimney stack to stash acorns, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. So, he went back inside and cut a hole in the wall and, sure enough, out came a lot of acorns - an estimated 700 pounds of acorns. He figured the pesky woodpeckers had been at it for several years.

Prepare! Don’t let Tornadoes Take You by Surprise
The links below will help you find out what you can do now to prepare for a tornado. Preparation is key to staying safe and minimizing impacts.
Be Weather-Ready: Check the forecast regularly to see if you're at risk for tornadoes. Listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about tornado watches and warnings. Check the WeatherReady Nation for tips.
Sign Up for Notifications: Know how your community sends warnings. Some communities have outdoor sirens. Others depend on media and smart phones to alert residents of severe storms capable of producing tornadoes.
Create a Communications Plan: Have a family plan that includes an emergency meeting place and related information. If you live in a mobile home or home without a basement, identify a nearby safe building you can get too quickly, such as a church or family member.
Pick a safe room in your home, such as a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Check more ideas for your family plan at: https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan
Practice Your Plan: Conduct a family severe thunderstorm drill regularly so everyone knows what to do if a tornado is approaching. Make sure all members of your family know to go there when tornado warnings are issued. Don't forget pets if time allows.
Prepare Your Home: Consider having your safe room reinforced. You can find plans for reinforcing an interior room to provide better protection on the Federal Emergency Management Agency website.
Help Your Neighbor: Encourage your loved ones to prepare for the possibility of tornadoes. Take CPR training so you can help if someone is hurt.
Find out what you can do when a tornado strikes. Acting quickly is key to staying safe and minimizing impacts.
Stay Weather-Ready: Continue to listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay updated about tornado watches and warnings.
At Your House: If you are in a tornado warning, go to your basement, safe room, or an interior room away from windows. Don't forget pets if time allows.
At Your Workplace or School: Follow your tornado drill and proceed to your tornado shelter location quickly and calmly. Stay away from windows and do not go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums.
Outside: Seek shelter inside a sturdy building immediately if a tornado is approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Neither is a mobile home or tent. If you have time, get to a safe building.
In a vehicle: Being in a vehicle during a tornado is not safe. The best course of action is to drive to the closest shelter. If you are unable to make it to a safe shelter, either get down in your car and cover your head, or abandon your car and seek shelter in a low lying area such as a ditch or ravine.

The Many Benefits of Community Gardens
Greenleaf Communities believes that urban agriculture can be beneficial to the environment, and to the health and wellbeing of community members. The introduction of community gardens may be able to reduce the impact of food deserts in low-income areas and allow residents greater access to nutritious food that is necessary to live a healthy life.
Community gardens can mitigate some of the problems that plague urban areas. They can be a beneficial addition to many communities by increasing the availability of nutritious foods, strengthening community ties, reducing environmental hazards, reducing food miles and creating a more sustainable system.
Community gardens can help reduce negative environmental impacts by promoting sustainable agriculture; reducing food transportation costs and reducing water runoff. Humans, plants and animals can all benefit from urban agriculture since it creates habitats and improves the ecology of the area.
Community gardens:
Help improve air and soil quality
Increase biodiversity of plants and animals
Reduce “food miles” that are required to transport nutritious food
Can replace impervious structures and improve water infiltration
Can reduce neighborhood waste through composting
Positively impact the urban micro-climate
Poor nutrition and obesity are both challenges to low-income neighborhoods. Low accessibility to nutritious foods can cause health problems to residents located in food deserts The addition of gardens to these areas may improve nutrition and increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Community gardens:
Increase access to fresh foods
Improve food security
Increase physical activity through garden maintenance activities
Improve dietary habits through education
Increase fruit and vegetable intake
Reduce risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases
Improve mental health and promote relaxation
Social ties are important to the wellbeing of people in a community since they can bring positive health effects and community involvement. Community gardens allow for the creation of social ties and build a greater feeling of community. These connections help reduce crime, empower residents and allow residents to feel safe in their neighborhoods.
Gardens have been an important aspect of many cultures in history. In the past, community gardens were commonly used to provide food for families year-round. During WWII, victory gardens were an important source of food for American families. Recently, there has been a resurgence of community gardens to help mitigate the impacts of food deserts and as a use for the increased number of vacant lands present in urban areas. Community gardens can provide fresh, healthy produce for residents and allow them to reduce their food bills.
Many cities and organizations provide opportunities for residents to become involved with community gardens. The USDA’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service has implemented a grant program to help decrease the impact of food deserts in low-income communities. They strive to provide long-term food security by supporting local agriculture projects while also improving economic, social and environmental problems. For successful programs, it is important that the community becomes involved with the project and to work with the community to develop solutions. Soil contamination and acquiring land can become a challenge in implementing a community garden.
Unionville’s Community Garden is located at the City park. For More information on our local community garden contact the Unionville Park Board.

VOTE APRIL 4TH, 2023
Vote April 4th
My name is Connie Michael.
I am seeking a position on the Board of Trustees of the Putnam County Health Department
I am a Registered Nurse and had the honor of serving the health care needs of the Putnam County residents with my 30 plus years experience in public health. I had the privilege of working closely with Nettie Lewis, Registered Nurse BSN, a Putnam County Health Department founder and a very valuable mentor to me.
I held several roles through my tenure, including serving as Administrator of the health department. If elected on April 4th I look forward to working harmoniously with the current Board of Trustees.
A few of the many responsibilities for board members are: Budget oversight, Policy making, Strategic planning for the future of the health department and most importantly ensuring the Health and Safety of the Putnam County residents.
I will always make the residents of Putnam County a TOP priority in any decision making related to their health and safety and other possible needs. Feel free to call 660-216-8454 with any questions you may have for me.
Thank you for your consideration for a vote of confidence April 4th.
Stay Healthy and Best Regards
Hello Putnam County, my name is Nettie Lewis and I have applied for a position on the Board of Trustees at the Putnam County Health Department. I am a former administrator and community nurse. I spent 27 years at the Health Department and retire in 2001. I started my career in public heath in 1975 when I took the job of bringing public health services to our county. I was responsible for developing public health programs which included most aspects of health and wellness. In my tenure I was able to see how public changed the focus from sickness and illness to one that centered on disease prevention and healthy lifestyles. It’s been my privilege to serve the people of Putnam County. I was thankful for having a supportive board and a group of dedicated employees who supported the mission of public health.
