Pastoral Ponderings - by Teri Thomas Just when everything seems to have calmed down the chaos begins again. Life has been a bit chaotic in the church office these days with changes in staff happening and more on the way. These changes always have upsides and downsides depending on the day and your perspective.

On Sunday mornings the church school for children in pre-school will continue as usual. Those in K through 5th will continue to be dismissed from worship after the Time with Children.

Annual Day of Caring: Sunday, September 17th Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 17, to participate in the 2nd annual Day of Caring! A wide variety of community service projects, off-site at partner institutions as well as on-site at the church, will be available for all age ranges and abilities.

The Day of Caring will begin at 9 am with a short service and projects will conclude before noon. Childcare will be available. Invite your family, friends, and co-workers--all are welcome to participate! Sign up will begin Sunday, August 13, at 10 am, and will continue each Sunday through September 10.

Sign up for projects in the Gathering Place beginning August 13th and on the Featured Events page of our website.

There will be no 11 am worship on September 17th.

What Do Deacons Do?

Northminster T-shirts for Sale Remember how awesome it looked seeing everyone in their Northminster t-shirts at Day of Caring last year? Let's do it again! Don't delay!

Orders close August 30th. Day of Caring is September 17th.

This year the Deacons are offering the Northminster T-shirt in a bright teal blue color. A sample will be available. The shirts are tagless and made of 100% pre-shrunk cotton.

August Worship August 6th is Communion Sunday.

We have a new seminary intern beginning this Sunday. Marland Pittman will be with us through the entire school year and this is your opportunity to meet him. Marland has served as a ruling elder at Irvington Presbyterian Church. He is a middler at CTS. We are looking forward to having him with us at Northminster. This is also the Sunday we will be blessing backpacks. Bring your backpack with

you to church, either service.

August 13th is the 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time. Matthew tells the story of Jesus walking across the stormy sea and Peter trying to walk on water with him.

Sunday, August 20th the Genesis passage tells us about Joseph encountering his brothers, years after they sold him into slavery. Believe it or not, the theme is forgiveness.

August 27th is going to be a very interesting Sunday. Rabbi Brett Krichever of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation and I are doing a pulpit exchange. I will preach at the synagogue on the Friday Sabbath and he will preach here at Northminster on Sunday. We came up with this idea after studying scripture together. I hope you will be here for this special service.

We will be exploring the questions and issues raised in the book, Facing Decline, Finding Hope. The book is available in the church library, and for sale in the church office ($20 per copy). The officers have read it and we will

think together about the future of Northminster. This should be a fun and exciting conversation. Discussion is open to everyone of any age. You do not have to read the book first but it will give you some framework.

Adult Education Opportunities Continuing the Journey: Exploring Racism and White Privilege Are you reading? Watching?

On Sunday, September 10, we will: 1) Have one final summer conversation at 10 am in Calvin Hall and 2) Celebrate, at both 9 and 11 am, all who have participated in this summer’s journey.

Watch for further opportunities to continue these explorations and conversations!

Wednesday Night Bible Study: Something Different for 2017-2018 Join us for We Make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren, a yearlong quest for spiritual formation, reorientation and activation. Each

chapter begins with 2 or 3 Scripture passages which we will consider in relationship to McLaren’s narrative. While the text does not move systematically through the Bible, we will explore a wide expanse of the Biblical narrative in our study. Primary leadership will be provided by Parish Associate Carol McDonald.

We will begin on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, and conclude on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. There will be 22 sessions with breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, and Holy Week. We’ll meet from 6:00 – 7:15 pm each week.

Stewardship - by Mason King “I am not willing to accept that everything happens for a reason.

I do not believe God has a reason to take young beautiful souls from their loved ones. I do believe, however, that if we are suffering we can choose to use faith to survive.

We can believe in the uncertainty and look for a service to others.”

I hope you were fortunate enough to have attended our service on July 9 and heard the guest sermon

by Justin Phillips of Indianapolis-based Overdose Lifeline Inc. The above quote is from one of the most affecting passages of her eye-opening testimony. And in some ways it crystallized for me what I find as the most satisfying and energizing aspects of being a member of Northminster.

Justin described losing her son to an opioid addiction and how it led to questioning her faith in God. It is a powerful thing to hear that kind of raw and honest testimony emanating from the pulpit, where so often we turn for comfort. But Phillips’ sermon certainly was not the first time I have heard someone step in front of the Northminster congregation and admit to being hurt, dispirited and unable to find an easy, faith-based answer to a life crisis. Indeed, we encourage courageous investigation of faith.

One of the things that I have always appreciated about Northminster is that it welcomes people in all stages of their faith journey. No

one claims to have all of the right answers. Our pastors acknowledge their own struggles to make sense of scripture, God’s intent, and the often wide spaces between what we believe SHOULD happen for the faithful and what DOES happen. And we are not told what we should believe, but rather are encouraged to explore for ourselves and find insights that are personally meaningful. In fact, to “see” is the first tenet in Northminister’s mission to “seek, serve and embrace.”

This is what I think about when I mull the theme to our new stewardship campaign, “Go and see.”

We walk through the door and are welcomed to use our own eyes and minds to encounter difficult issues.

We have opportunities to discuss topics as current and sensitive as opioid addiction, the cycle of poverty, and racism and white privilege. And then we are encouraged to “go”—to apply our mission outside of church in dozens and dozens of ways. We directly support local school children, help build housing, stock food banks, mentor refugee families, provide disaster assistance, and so much more.

When we support the church, we support our individual faith journeys and our collective power to heal. As Justin Philips said, “We can believe in the uncertainty and look for a service to others.” Please consider strengthening our ability to do so with your stewardship contribution this year.

Sound & Spirit Needs You! – by John Wright, Artistic Director, Sound & Spirit Sound & Spirit, the arts at Northminster Presbyterian Church, provides opportunities for anyone to hear live music at no charge. If you’ve attended a Sound & Spirit concert, you are aware of the high quality of musicians who take the stage. It is our mission not only to offer free concerts, but to offer an eclectic mix of genres with a focus on excellence. Last season, for example, along with bayan and violin, string trio, and two choirs, we featured the award winning bluegrass band Flatt Lonesome and the Northminster Chancel Choir with orchestra.

Thanks, in part, to the internet, recorded music is more accessible than ever and in some ways is used as an escape. We can hear music in the grocery store, in the auto repair shop and in the dentist’s office. We can listen to music on our phone regardless of where we are. While listening to music in this manner may be a pleasant activity, it remains a private experience.

Montreat Conference on Worship and Music

– by John Wright, Director of Music Ministries In late June, 22 Northminster children, youth and adults attended the annual Montreat Conference on Worship and Music. This conference is open to anyone interested in worship - musicians, pastors, worship committee members, and “regular folks.” Through daily rehearsals, seminars, prayer and worship services, registrants are provided opportunities to feel God’s presence, to grow spiritually and to refresh. Surrounded by mountains, Montreat is called a thin place by some – a place where the barrier between heaven and earth is felt to be so narrow that communication with God is easier than in other places. Northminster conferees have lodging in three houses clustered together. Part of the fun and meaning of Montreat comes from meals shared, rock-

ers rocked, and our kids playing in the creek. Through the years, Northminster Presbyterian Church has benefited from the creative and innovative resources and chancel furnishings discovered at the Montreat Conference. I hope you will consider attending this opportunity to study, play, worship, sing, pray and learn in June 2018. one of our

Christian Education: Family Ministries Happenings - by Debbie Bulloff

All School age children (K-5th gr) will attend worship with their parents and celebrate Communion with the Congregation on Sunday, August 6, 2017. Look for the Children’s Worship Bulletin which will be available along with the regular Sunday Worship bulletin.

After Time with Children, Toddlers and Preschoolers will proceed to their classrooms (R. 136, R. 113) on the 1st floor of the C.E. wing for Church School and care. Nursery, Toddler and Preschool Church School and care is available every Sunday. Church School for K-5th graders will be offered at both services, after the Time with Children on Sundays, August 13, 20, and 27.

We plan a relaxing time with videos, crafts, and snacks this summer as we journey through Matthew and Genesis to learn stories of our faith.

Electronics Recycling, August 12-13 The 8th annual Northminster neighborhood electronics recycle event will take place on August 12 and 13. The church requests that you provide a $10 donation for each carload of recyclable electronics. This donation will offset fees incurred this year from Recycle Force. Proceeds gained from the

event will help support the Northminster Clothe-a-Child program in December, which provides warm clothes for children at School 55.

Recyclable items may include computers, printers, toner cartridges, microwaves, dehumidifiers, phones and much more. A complete list of acceptable electronics is available

at recycleforce.org. (Televisions and CRT monitors require an additional $10 recycling donation. Air conditioners: $20.) Northminster recycling event hours: Saturday, 8/12: 10am-2pm. Sunday, 8/13: 12-2pm.

NorthStars - August Planning Meeting On Monday, August 21st, we will gather for our annual planning session for NorthStars. Please come with your creative ideas for monthly activities, including trips, concerts, mission possibilities, and places of interest. If you have never planned or led an event, please consider it. We’re always looking for new people and ideas!

This past year, we observed plants and vegetables being grown on a

roof, learned how sugar cream pies are made in mass, came to understand about Lew Wallace’s connection to Indiana History, and helped sort food for the needy at Gleaners.

We will meet in Calvin Hall at 6:00 P.M. for a pitch-in dinner. If your last name begins with A –G, please bring a dessert, and H–Z, please bring a salad or side dish of your choice. We will supply turkey and

ham for sandwiches, and will provide the drinks. We will be taking a donation of $2.00 per person at the door.

Northminster Youth, Parent and Family Activities - by Julie Shannon

August 13th: Middle & High School Students & parents— Lunch gathering —12-1:15pm.

At this gatherings we will enjoy a light lunch and will discuss and make plans for the coming school year of Youth activities. We would love to have your participation and your voice be a part of the discussion and planning. Please let Julie know a few days before, if you can make it.

August 18th: Friday evening — State Fair Trip. We will attend the state fair as a group. Meet at the Shannon’s home (3935 Central Ave.) or be dropped off at the Fair.

We will play and eat in the midway from 6 to 9:30 pm. You and your family could join us for the fun. If you purchase midway wristbands ahead of time you can get them for $23 on-line until August 6th.
