Life&Style Westward Care Completes Retirement Apartments in Roundhay Westward Care, providers of tailored living and social care for older people, recently announced the completion of the final phase of development at its Southlands location in Roundhay, representing the end of a £4.3 million investment. The investment comes as the company continues to develop high-quality options for people in later life who want the reassurance of gold standard accredited care and support onsite and immediately accessible when they need it – but don’t want to move to a care home. “We’re delighted to announce that the final phase of investment in Southlands is complete and we look forward to welcoming new residents to our community”, said Peter Hodkinson, managing director of Westward Care. “Southlands is offering older people a true alternative in later life - we believe you do not need to be in a care home to get 24-hour care and support onsite. The service is built around the individual and therefore the individual only pays for what they use in accordance with their needs. The apartments are the individuals’ own homes and are purchased on that basis,

so they also get to retain their assets. Our focus has always been about providing options in later life – rather than just relying on a traditional ‘one size fits all’ care home approach.” One and two bedroom apartments are available from £180,000, with the newly renovated and period apartments starting at £250,000. Westward Care apartments have been meticulously designed with the homeowner at the heart of the development and include a range of facilities allowing residents to enjoy a rich and fulfilling life. These are: a 24-hour onsite care and support team and optional services such as a dining package, room service and full cleaning and personal laundry. Residents can enjoy the finer things and forget about the stress of running a home. There is also an in-house hairdressing salon and pamper room, and all day refreshments. Anyone interested in the Southlands location, or any other Westward Care facilities, should visit www. WestwardCare.co.uk

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

SNOWDEN SCHOFIELD (1870-1949) Founder of an iconic Leeds business Leeds has long been a shopping mecca, drawing the crowds to its elegant Victorian arcades and handsome Edwardian streets and now to the glitzy precincts of the Trinity Centre and Victoria Gate. It used to boast some fine department stores – Marshall & Snelgrove, Matthias Robinson, Lewis’s, and, perhaps people’s favourite, Schofields, still fondly remembered as part of the fabric of life years ago. Schofields was a family enterprise, founded in 1901 by a young Bradford man, Snowden Schofield, in a modest drapery shop here in Leeds. It was to become a household name, its success mirroring the growth and prosperity of the city.

Snowden Schofield was born in Bradford in 1870, the son of a joiner. After his first job in a draper’s, he moved to London as sales assistant in one of the prestigious, elegant Knightsbridge stores: high class experience. Ambitious and energetic, he moved on to a position with Owen Owen in Liverpool, and there in 1901 he married and started thinking about launching his own business. He visited a friend in Leeds with a shop in the newly-opened Victoria Arcade, built to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, fronting what was then the narrow Upperhead Row. Although not the best part of town, he was told it was a good pitch, and he took the plunge, renting the corner shop, No.1, at £50 a year. He set up as a ‘fancy draper’, specialising in fashionable trimmings, lace and ribbons, gloves, hosiery and hats. On the first day the shop was packed and he took over £62 – success! Full of bright new ideas, he began to advertise on the front page of local newspapers (‘a dainty cream silk blouse with lace and all-round frills, only 4s 11½d’), and offered a postal service. Quality and good value were his watchwords. Before long he took over more shops in the Arcade, increased his clothing range, and looked for new opportunities nearby.

Outside the elegant Arcade, narrow cobbled lanes linked crowded courtyards and old buildings, including two long-established theatres, the Hippodrome and the Theatre Royal. Close by stood the historic mansion ‘Red Hall’, built in 1628, where King Charles I had been held captive in 1647 on his way to the executioner’s block in London. The handsome panelled room he had occupied was known as the King’s Chamber (and King Charles Street still exists). In 1912 Snowden Schofield bought Red Hall and incorporated the ancient building into his store. The King’s Chamber was restored as the Tudor Café, where shoppers could be refreshed to the genteel accompaniment of a quintet of lady musicians – they could choose a toasted crumpet for 2d or steak and chips for 1s 4d. Shopping at Schofields was an experience to be enjoyed and savoured. His path was not always smooth. In 1909, after only eight years together, his wife Mabel died, leaving him with a young family, but his wife’s sisters rallied round to help and he was able to focus on his growing business. The First World War intervened, but by the 1920s he was ready to extend again, acquiring further buildings along the narrow main road, now scheduled

to be rebuilt as the handsome new Headrow. In the 30s he acquired the Hippodrome when it closed, and later the ‘Cock and Bottle’ inn which had stood in his way. He began to envisage creating a new, modern store from this patchwork of property, to meet every need – from furs to furniture, from silks to saucepans. But again war intervened and his plans had to be shelved. Development began again post-war, when he bought the Victoria Arcade, home of his first shop, and linked it to the other buildings. But in March 1949 he died, aged 79 – more than a thousand people followed his funeral. His two sons took over the business and the plans for redevelopment. In the late 1950s, after acquiring the Theatre Royal, a staged programme of demolition, clearance and construction was implemented. The historic quarter of Red Hall, the theatres, the Arcade all vanished, and by 1962 the six-storey flagship Schofields building was completed. For the next twenty years it was Leeds’ premier department store.

It is still remembered today for its friendly atmosphere, its quality service, its three restaurants, its Food Hall to rival Harrods (where smoked salmon trimmings were given away at day’s end), its uniformed lift attendants, and the magic of the flying cash tubes, which Snowden Schofield had been the first to introduce to Leeds in 1906. Until Peter Schofield’s retirement and its sale in 1984 it remained a family firm, deeply valued by its loyal customers and staff. Snowden Schofield would have been proud of that.

Kirkstall Forge A Whole New Neighbourhood You may have heard whisperings about the regeneration of Kirkstall Forge, the former working forge just down the road from Horsforth, a stone’s throw from the famous Kirkstall Abbey and three miles from Leeds city centre. The forge was a major site of employment for hundreds of years and was managed by the Butler family for six generations before being acquired by developer CEG, who recruited architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to masterplan a mixed-use development. Ambitious Masterplan Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios have been designing high quality, award-winning developments for years, but this is one of their first in the North of England. It is no coincidence that design-conscious CEG has chosen to work with them. Their masterplan for Kirkstall Forge emphasises car-free streets prioritised for pedestrians, and sustainability sits shoulder to shoulder with design that is intentionally different. Designed for Modern Life The development will accommodate over 1,000 new homes. These are houses designed for modern life. Whilst taking the high ceilings and sense

of community from older, terraced Victorian homes, they have all the modern benefits of open plan living, floor to ceiling windows, 3.6 metre high ceilings, private terraces and roof lights in an eco-friendly home. Sustainability at its heart

was so impressive, it beat a number of high profile London schemes to scoop the Property Wellbeing Award at the Property Week awards last year, as well as the much coveted British Council of Offices Commercial Workplace award – the first time a building in Yorkshire has won on the national stage.

To add to their impressive sustainability credentials, Kirkstall Forge actively promotes travelling by bike, car sharing and making full use of the on-site train station that opened in 2016. And it seems to have worked, with a journey time of just six minutes to Leeds, it surpassed expected rail passenger numbers for the year within the first five months of opening, encouraging local residents as well as those working there, to take the car-free approach.

Businesses Recognising a Quality Location

Multi- Award Winning

This is truly an innovative, high quality development, which is reflected in its high profile tenants, award wins and ambitious masterplan. It sets the bar high for what can be expected from Kirkstall Forge and with a second equally innovative, quality office building in the design stages, and two prototype homes being built this year, we can rest assured Kirkstall Forge will be anything but ordinary.

The office building Number One, Kirkstall Forge welcomed its first tenants in November 2017 – with Zenith Vehicle Leasing, CEG, and Butler’s bar/restaurant all helping to create a community that went on to win national, international and regional awards during 2018. In fact, the emphasis on wellbeing and community

Earlier this year Mercedes-Benz Vans moved into Number One, followed by Bupa who spotted the synergy of their business and the impressive wellbeing credentials of the building. And, Forge Studios, which launched in November, caters to smaller businesses by offering flexible lease terms and fully furnished offices.

Leeds Baroque Celebrates it Twentieth Year! In 2020 Leeds Baroque choir and orchestra will celebrate its twentieth year performing in Leeds and the surrounding region. It is the city’s only ‘period instrument’ orchestra performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Founded in 2000, and made up of professional, student and talented amateur performers, it is directed by Prof Peter Holman, an international authority on this repertoire. Leeds Baroque’s next performance is on Sunday 16th June, 3pm in the Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall, University of Leeds, and takes them back to some of their earliest repertoire and the familiar name of Claudio Monteverdi. Monteverdi’s ‘A Venetian Vespers’ was written between 1620 and 1640 for the splendid surrounding of St Marks in Venice, following the famous Vespers of 1610. This sequence will include the startling ‘Domine ad adjuvandum’, the opening

Other works in the concert include ‘Dixit Dominus II’(1641) for eight solo singers and orchestra; ‘Currite populi’ for tenor solo with bass violin and organ, and the ever popular ‘Beatus vir’ for six solo singers with choir and orchestra. To finish on a really high note, the concert will close with the Monteverdi ‘Gloria’ for seven solo voices and chorus with orchestra. The intricate music demands eight-part choir with solo singers. The small orchestra will be two violins, three violas, bass violin (a popular instrument of the 17th century) violone, theorbo and chamber organ. For further information, visit www.leedsbaroque.org

Arts&Culture “I’m interpreting Aida as happening in a contemporary world where war is everywhere. Aida's emotional landscape is also a very internal one; she is very close to death and experiences exile and loss most intensely. We are surrounded by situations today which could be Aida’s. Jealousy, ambition, patriotism and family conflict are eternal human experiences, and the focus in our production will be on the characters’ relationships with each other.”

Opera North Presents Powerful Concert Staging of Aida Verdi’s ‘Aida’ is the latest in Opera North’s series of concert stagings of large-scale operas. It opens at Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday 1st May, before embarking on an extensive tour. Theatre director Annabel Arden, designer Joanna Parker and conductor Sir Richard Armstrong, will reunite for Verdi’s Egyptian epic. And, once again, the Orchestra of Opera North will be right there amongst the singers.

Egypt is at war with Ethiopia. Aida, daughter of the Ethiopian king, has been captured by the Egyptians. Secretly, she loves an Egyptian general, Radamès, and he loves her. When he is selected to lead a renewed assault against the enemy, Aida is forced to choose between betraying her country or betraying her heart. Colombian soprano Alexandra Zabala takes on the role of Aida, with Mexican tenor Rafael Rojas as her lover. American baritone Eric Greene is his adversary, Aida’s father Amonasro, King of Ethiopia, with Alessandra Volpe is the Egyptian princess Amneris, Aida’s rival for the love of Radamès. Finnish bass Petri Lindroos sings the High Priest Ramfis, and Michael Druiett is the King of Egypt.

“Opera North’s concert stagings are so compelling because they put the singers in the same space as the audience, and the orchestra becomes the landscape of the piece”, said Annabel Arden. “Having them centre stage is truly thrilling, as so much of the drama is in their playing.

Although it is best known for the grandiosity and imperialism of set pieces like the famous Triumphal March, at Aida’s heart is a web of intimate personal relationships between people caught in the crossfire of international conflict, ending with a profound prayer for peace. Its leading characters are as conflicted as the war-torn world they inhabit.

“Yet it’s not a concert. The singers are inhabiting their roles fully, there is physical staging, full costume, and certainly psychological and emotional depth.

Opera North’s new concert staging of Aida is at Leeds Town Hall on 1st, 8th, 10th, 28th, and 30th May. To book, visit operanorth.co.uk or call 0113 223 3600.

Arts&Culture Play Flags Up Shocking 1960’s Practices, Still Relevant Today The final production in Leeds Playhouse’s Pop-Up season is Amanda Whittington’s ‘Be My Baby’. It sees just the women of the Playhouse Ensemble Company performing together, alongside new cast member Anna Gray from Mind the Gap Theatre. Set in a home for young, unmarried women, Mary is a 19-year old and seven months pregnant when her mother delivers her into the care of St Saviour’s. As she, Dolores, Queenie and Norma bond over records and romance, they begin to understand what it means to give up their children and Mary realises she must fight to keep her baby. “’Be My Baby’ is one of few all-female scripts with a strong narrative for young women”, said Director Jacqui HonessMartin. “It was written about the ‘60s but is still relevant today. It’s only 60 years since women were given access to the legal rights that curbed the practices shown in the play, but one only has to look at current politics in the US to see how fragile those rights are.

“There are two groups of women in the UK for whom the issues of this play are still shockingly relevant. Refugees and asylum seekers have appallingly high maternal and infant mortality rates as there are barriers to them accessing even basic maternal care, and over 90% of learning-disabled mothers will have their babies taken into care.

Pictured: Jacqui HonessMartin Photos: Anthony Robling

There are two groups of women in the UK for whom the issues of this play are still shockingly relevant “I want audiences to think about the women who were forced to give up their children, about the consequences of the beliefs of the time, to consider why it wasn’t questioned, and recognise that the structure that enabled these things to happen are still in place today.” Whilst there are nods to the 1960s, Jacqui and the creative team have shaped a piece that comes without an era, opting for an unsentimental approach. The female Ensemble Company comprises Tessa Parr, Jo Mousley, Crystal Condie, Simona Bitmate, Susan Twist and Anna Gray. ‘Be My Baby’ runs from 11th May – 1st June. Tickets are available from 0113 213 7700 or leedsplayhouse.org.uk

Hidden Leeds Presents Stuart Fortey’s ‘Fakespeare’ A new play by Stuart Fortey, ‘Fakespeare’, is witty, intriguing and clever. It’s about the sensational discovery in the 1790s of unknown documents written by Shakespeare and how they led to the ruin of a family. It will be presented by Hidden Leeds at several venues during May. In 1794 a noted collector of old books, Samuel Ireland, is delighted when his son, William, brings him documents written by Shakespeare, including the text of a play obtained from an anonymous source. But when the play is staged, scholars question its authenticity and denounce Samuel as a forger. The household is thrown into turmoil and family skeletons come tumbling out of cupboards as they find themselves caught up in a tragicomedy worthy of Shakespeare himself.

Pictured: David Robertson, Hidden Leeds

In Leeds in 2019, Samuel, William and their housekeeper Mrs Freeman meet again to try and sort out the truth of it all… The reading will last about one hour and afterwards there will be an option to stay and talk to playwright Stuart Fortey. The event is free, with a PAYF option at the end. The performances take place the last fortnight of May: Tuesday 14th May 7pm at All Souls’ Church, Blackman Lane, LS7; Wednesday 15th May, at Café Lento, Headingley; Friday 17th at The Leeds Library; Thurs 23rd at The Cardigan Arms; Friday 24th at The Chemic, Woodhouse – all at 8pm.

‘Scott & Sid’ a Winner at National Film Awards The Yorkshire film ‘Scott and Sid’ recently won Best British Film and Best Supporting Actress at the National Film Awards - pushing aside the likes of Idris Elba, Emma Stone and Michael Caine! It was made for £1m, fought off productions that had budgets of over £6m. Filmed throughout Yorkshire, including Leeds, York and Bradford, it's based on the true story of two best friends from Bradford who set out on a 15-year journey to prove everyone wrong and make their film making dream a reality. Written, directed and produced by Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj, this was the duo’s debut feature film – winning Best British Film is a fitting tribute to their dream chasing philosophy and film making ambitions. It’s hard to believe that they had never written, directed or produced a film before!

Life passes in the blink of an eye. If you’ve got a dream you have to go for it As Sid said: “Life passes in the blink of an eye. If you’ve got a dream you have to be passionate about it and not scared to go for it. We hope this film will inspire people to chase their dreams.” Scott and Sid were just two young lads trying to survive their youth but when they met each other they just knew they could achieve something together. They had set up two successful businesses (one was window cleaning) before they left school! But making a film about their lives became their dream and they chased it down.

Scott And Sid is getting a US release later this year. You can catch it here in Leeds on Thursday 16th May at The Vue, Kirkstall Road at 7pm or The Vue in York on Saturday 11th May, 7pm. Book via https:// www.ourscreen.com/film/Scott-and-Sid http://www.scottandsid.com

Food&Drink The Deer Park Re-Opens with Stunning New Look The Deer Park has also launched a range of high protein, low calorie dishes – with a wide selection of dishes under 750 calories, including King Prawn, Crab and Chorizo Linguine and Stir-Fried Beef Fillet Salad. Unusually, the Deep Park has a new, dedicated vegan menu and it is packed with flavoursome favourites with plantbased twists – Roasted Lentil Falafel, an impressive Burger with Slow-Roasted Tomato Sauce, Spiced Coconut Curry. The Deer Park on Street Lane recently reopened to reveal its stylish, new contemporary look, covered pergola, and new menu. Both the pub’s indoor and outdoor spaces have received an extensive makeover. A private dining space has been created that’s perfect for celebrations and private parties. And, the new pergola provides a lovely outside dining space – complete with cosy sheepskins to ward off chilly evenings at the moment. We popped in to soak up the new atmosphere and menu and had a really lovely evening – wonderful food and fantastic service. The team has grown too with new Head Chef Daniel Botha leading the charge. “The Deer Park provides a real hub for the local community”, said General Manager, Sasha Lloyd-Wickham. “We have made some stunning changes, allowing us to create a modern, open and stylish look and feel and making it the ideal spot for friends and family to get together.” The new seasonal menu features mouthwatering, freshly prepared dishes, including Sweet Chilli King Prawn Rolls, Rack of Lamb, Lamb Koftas, Vegan Mezze Platter and an exciting range of desserts.

Difficult though it was to make a decision, we dived in with a fabulous, melt-in-the-mouth Scallops of the Day with hazelnut puree and chopped apple and kale salad; Szechuan Pepper Squid cooked to perfection in a beautiful light, golden crumb with aioli; delicious Truffled Goat’s Cheese on sweet chilli beetroot and diced pear with an orange and honey dressing; and Oven baked King Prawns and Lobster in garlic butter. This was quickly followed by a lovely Rack of Lamb with aubergine, roasted sweet peppers and potato

Dauphinoise; delicious Slow Cooked Belly Pork and Scallops with a side of tenderstem broccoli, asparagus and green beans in a soy glaze; King Prawn, Crab and Chorizo Linguini with tomatoes, garlic, chilli and white wine; and a Spiced Coconut Curry with miso sesame aubergine and broccoli on sticky jasmine rice from the Vegan Menu. We rounded the meal off with an amazing Melting Chocolate and Peanut Bomb, filled with Sticky Toffee Pudding and peanut butter cream, with vanilla ice cream and hot salted caramel sauce – this definitely added a touch of drama! Although not as dramatic, the Apple and Rhubarb Crumble and Custard, Sticky Toffee Pudding with Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream, and the Cheese Board were equally as delicious! The Deer Park is a real draw for local residents and this new makeover will only enhance its appeal…great food and lovely staff – what’s not to like? www.deerparkleeds.co.uk

CommunityNews New Poetry Event At HEART a Great Success

Dementia Action Week in Horsforth For the third year running, Dementia Friendly Horsforth is offering a full programme of free events to celebrate Dementia Action Week, 19th – 24th May. Four Dementia Friends awareness sessions will be delivered by Dementia Friends Champions, and an Alzheimer’s Society information stall will be manned by Memory Support Workers. There will also be a poetry reading morning at the Smile Café and ‘Walk and Talk’ in Horsforth Hall Park, especially for people living with dementia

In March, over 40 people gathered for the first session of a new, regular poetry event at HEART in Headingley. Taking place from 7 – 9pm on the second Monday of every month, ‘Soundbites’ is a stimulating mix of invited, published poets and open mic slots for emerging poets to showcase their work. Award winning poet and author, Mark Connors headlined for the inaugural evening, performing two sets that drew from his publications ‘Life is a Long Song’ and ‘Nothing is Meant to be Broken’, as well as some new material. He was ably supported by fourteen local poets of varying ages, who signed up for fourminute slots and between them presented an eclectic selection - some humorous, some serious. The standard of their work was excellent and its diversity impressive.

The next two Soundbites will take place on Mondays 13th May and 10th June at HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley. Admission is free, but donations to help cover the costs of staging the event are always appreciated. The headline poet for May is James Nash and there will an opportunity for 14 other poets to sign up for a slot to read their work on the night: first come, first served. Follow Soundbites on Facebook at SoundbitesPoetry

The highlight of the programme is a drama production, ‘The Last Memory’ by Alan Stockdill, presented by Talking Stock Productions. They will also be showing the film ‘Still Alice’ (Cert 12). Information will be available at Horsforth Farmers’ Market on 4th May and at various locations around the town. Many thanks to Morrisons, Horsforth Live at Home Scheme, Horsforth Community Hub, Cragg Hill Baptist Church, Grove Methodist Church, St Margaret’s Church, Horsforth Town Council, for hosting and supporting the events. Sri Lankans Celebrate the New Year Festival For the second year running, a group of expatriate Sri Lankans recently gathered to celebrate the Sri Lankan New Year Festival, led by monks from Leeds Buddhist Vihara. This included an exhibition of traditional rituals, games and performances by both children and adults. Traditionally, this celebration is the culmination of the annual harvest, which is celebrated in April and millions of Sri Lankans all over the world still celebrate it. The dawn of New Year is marked with the sun moving from the house of Pisces to the house of Aries. This auspicious time is observed with various activities, such as lighting of the hearth to cook milk-rice with hopes of peace, gratitude, and wishes of prosperity and wellbeing for the coming year. People use this holiday season to rekindle relationships with families and friends. The traditional ‘Harvest Dance’ was performed by children from the Leeds Dhamma School, which is affiliated to Leeds Buddhist Vihara. The dance, choreographed by Saroja Wijenayaka, portrays the reaping and winnowing of rice, danced to light drum beats and haunting flute music.

A variety of traditional delicacies, made of rice flour, coconut and sugar, was served as well as typical Sri Lankan cuisine with rice and accompanying curries, all donated by the community. The finale included typical games played in rural Sri Lankan villages, including placing the eye on the elephant, tug of war, sack race and lime and spoon race. The Trustees of Leeds Buddhist Vihara would like to thank everyone involved for their support and contributions.

CommunityNews Cookridge Crumpets Present Defibrillator to Cookridge Fire Station

Cash for Kids Superhero Day Cash for Kids recently launched its ‘Superhero Day’ campaign on Radio Aire. Supporters are asked to fundraise, dress up and donate on Friday 10th May and all the money raised will stay in West Yorkshire. They are asking schools, colleges, universities and businesses to signup, be a hero and do whatever they can to raise much needed funds for the charity! It’s time to reveal your inner superhero and make a real difference to children with disabilities or who are disadvantaged.

Cookridge Crumpets Women's Institute recently raised £1,400 for a defibrillator to be attached to the side of Cookridge Fire Station. This life-saving equipment can now be used by the community in the event of a medical emergency. "Part of our remit as the WI is to raise money for the local community”, said Maureen Hancox, President of Cookridge Crumpets. “We'd heard so much about defibrillators in nearby areas like Horsforth that we thought it would be a great donation. “The fire station is at the heart of Cookridge, so it was an obvious location for it - it's near a busy main road and lots of houses. We will also continue to budget and raise funds towards the upkeep of the equipment.”

To celebrate the installation of the new defibrillator, Cookridge Crumpets recently attended a CPR demonstration at the Fire Station to learn more about how the defibrillator is used. "This was actually something we'd thought about fundraising for”, said Richard Kawecki, Red Watch Crew Commander. “We do carry one on the fire engine but it's brilliant to have one on the station as we are the heart of the community and it can be used by the public if we're not around. To get access you just ring 999 for the code. "You are far more likely to survive a cardiac arrest if someone uses a defibrillator – they're a really important piece of equipment to have in the local community. We can't thank the Cookridge Crumpets enough.”

Whatever you choose to do can be as wacky as you want – from locking up your boss, holding a super quiz, organising a onesie day, or holding a superhero dress up day at your school. You could even do a sponsored challenge and ask your family, work colleagues and friends to support you. The wackier the better! No contribution is too small – by working together we can make a huge difference to local children. All the details can be found on www.radioaire.co.uk/ superheroday. You can also support by texting AIRE to 70808 to make a £5 donation (texts are free and 100% of the donation will go to Cash for Kids). Radio Aire’s Cash for Kids is also running an online auction on their website which launches on 3rd May and runs until the 14th May with something to suit all tastes and budgets.

CommunityNews Cllr Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) dictates what speed should be prevalent on a 20mph scheme, rather than dictating which streets should or should not be 20mph. This has been dictated as 24mph (20mph + 10% +2mph, the enforceable limit).

Training to Use Speed Indicator Device (Sid)

20MPH Speed Limits The 20mph programme for residential streets has been rolling out across the city. A lot of people have questioned whether it is necessary and whether it will be enforced. Initially these zones were around schools, but it has since been expanded to the neighbourhoods incorporating schools, to support the Council’s ‘Child Friendly’ ambition. The vision is that all residential streets will be governed by a 20mph speed limit by 2020.

I recently put out a request for residents in the Adel & Wharfedale Ward to contact me if they would like to be trained to operate a SID in their local street(s) as part of the Community Speed Awareness Scheme. SIDs are lent to community groups by the Council and training is provided. This is to address anti-social driving behaviour and inappropriate speed on residential streets. If you would like to take part in training with other residents, please contact me at barry. anderson@leeds.gov.uk

WHAT REALLY MATTERS

The vision is that all residential streets will be governed by a 20mph speed limit by 2020 Provision of Anti-Snap Locks for New Properties You may be aware that Euro profile locks are easy to snap off. Therefore, my Council colleagues and I are asking housebuilders to provide anti-snap locks on all new dwellings as standard. Every planning notice issued now draws developers’ attention to this. Locks on new properties are subject to Building Regulations and must meet the British Standards and any Euro Cylinder locks have to pass the anti-snap test.

think about what we do and

how we do it Climate Change Emergency At Full Council on 27th March, Leeds City Council declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and I spoke about it in the Council Chamber. Let me be really clear - the science is irrefutable. It passes the gold standard for scientific research. Technically we know more about climate change than we do gravity right now. The UN report from last summer starkly demonstrated that we had 12 years left to avert catastrophic climate change. Not mildly inconvenient. Not somewhat annoying. But catastrophic. Scientists are rarely prone to hyperbole. Given that, it is vital that we act. There is no more urgent or higher priority. Have you seen the young people holding ‘climate strikes’ every month? Whatever people think about children and students missing school, it is really clear that they get it: the urgency and the need for change. This is a call to every adult to think about what we do and how we do it.

At the City Council we are acting where and when we can. We have one of the largest electric vehicle fleets in the country, we are cladding our housing stock to make it more thermally efficient, and we are investing in public transport to make Leeds the best city for walking and cycling. We will act locally and be a leader in our country. What we need is Central Government to do the same. Government can’t keep cutting local government finances. We need national leadership that will decarbonise the electricity grid and enact a radical programme of building insulation and energy conservation. Fundamentally we need a Green New Deal for people, with good jobs in these new industries and programmes that equip our society for this most difficult of centuries. There is no climate justice without economic justice because everything really is interconnected.

New Play Shares Intergenerational Stories A new play by intergenerational drama group ‘Generation Squad’, inspired by real life stories, will be performed on 3rd and 4th May at HEART on Bennett Road in Headingley. It is based on letters by pen pals from the Writing Back Project at University of Leeds, which connects students and older residents who wrote to one another for several months and then met in person at an event organised by Writing Back.

“It’s been so heart warming and moving to read the letters written by older people and students”, said Naomi Roxby Wardle, Generation Squad drama facilitator. “We have loved learning about Chinese Spring Festival, music and family traditions. We can’t wait to share all these amazing stories through this performance.” Both Writing Back and Generation Squad are projects that aim to break down barriers between older and young people and provide platforms for those involved to share their stories and form new friendships. Tickets (£5/£4) are available through Fall into Place Theatre at www.fallintoplace.co.uk. It is a relaxed performance and all are welcome. For more information please contact info@ falintoplace.co.uk or 0113 343 6189 to reserve a ticket.

Ever! Meanwood’s fifth annual festival, organised by Meanwood Valley Partnership, runs from Friday 24th May to Sunday 2nd June. It will be the biggest yet, with over 45 events at 15 venues, including local bars, cafes and restaurants, community halls, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm and Meanwood Park. The wide variety of events will kick off with a gathering of local brewers at Alfred to launch the festival beer (a collaboration between Hungry Bear, Meanwood and Ridgeside breweries), and will end with a street party at Terminus bar. In between, events range from arts, crafts, music and dance, to food, heritage and nature walks. You’ll even find life drawing and spoon whittling! A ‘first’ this year is ‘Music on T’Pitch’. Organised in conjunction with the Meanwood Cricket Club and the Myrtle Tavern, this family friendly concert (Sun 26 May, 12 – 7pm) will be a fantastic showcase for local bands, with something for every musical taste. CCTV Cameras to

PHAB is

be Installed Around

Celebrating!

Headingley and Hyde Park For 50 Years PHAB members have enjoyed their Friday PHAB Club, residentials and outings. They currently have some places available - for both disabled and able-bodied members to join the Club. Leeds PHAB Club, which meets at the Prince Philip Centre on Scott Hall Avenue LS7, is a lively organisation that inspires and supports both children and adults with and without disabilities, offering social activities and holidays that members can enjoy together promoting friendship and independence.

Pictured: Cllr Javaid Akhtar, Cllr Al Garthwaite, Cllr Neil Walshaw, Cllr Jonathan Pryor & Cllr Kayleigh Brooks

Thanks to the support of local councillors, four new CCTV cameras are to be installed at various sites around Little London, Woodhouse, Headingley and Hyde Park – areas identified as having high levels of anti-social behaviour. Following consultation with residents, and working alongside partners, it was decided that CCTV would be the most effective deterrent to this type of behaviour. It is hoped that residents and businesses will benefit from a reduction in crime levels and improved safety. “Helping people feel safe in their communities is incredibly important”, said Cllr Javaid Akhtar, Chair, Inner North West Community Committee.

“Anti-social behaviour is something that no one should have to put up with and we are hopeful that the CCTV will make people think twice before they act in such a way.” “The installation of these cameras provides further reassurance to residents that we are doing everything that we can as councillors to address anti-social behaviour in the area, and that community safety remains very much a priority for us”, said Cllr Neil Walshaw. “We would encourage residents to continue reporting antisocial behaviour and are hopeful that CCTV cameras will reduce the level of incidents.”

The club is also looking for reliable, voluntary minibus drivers, whose role will be to drive PHAB vehicles, collect members from their homes across Leeds and take them to the Prince Philip Centre for the Friday PHAB Club and on outings etc. Volunteers must be fit and healthy, with a clean licence and aged between 25 and 70. PHAB requires two referees and will organise DBS and training in safe-guarding, MIDAS and basic first aid. For further information, please contact Ann Hart MBE, Secretary, on ann.hartphab@btinternet.com

West Yorkshire Family Mediation Service In 2018, over 118,000 people in England and Wales petitioned for divorce – a rise of 8% on 2017 and the first rise for 15 years. Divorce or separation is never easy, invariably it is an emotional journey that results in feelings of guilt, loneliness, depression, frustration, anger and anxiety. For most, this will fade over time and allow us to get on with our lives. The other side to divorce - who will the children live with? – is less easy to deal with. How often can you see your children? What involvement will you have in decision-making? What will happen to your house, savings, family debts? There are three main pathways to choose from. You can take your case to Family Court and a judge will decide what is best for your children, how to deal with your property and finances, which could cost around £10,000. You can take your case to a solicitor who will work to obtain the best outcome, working with your ex-partner’s solicitor (cost approx. £2,500 - £4,000). Or, you can choose Family Mediation, which is recommended by all courts. They like to see people make an attempt at coming to an agreement before instigating court procedures.

With Mediation, ex-partners sit with a mediator and discuss options open to them. This empowers you to make the decisions that will affect your life and those of your children and allows you both to decide how best to deal with your finances and property. It’s invariably a much faster process and is much more affordable. West Yorkshire Family Mediation Service (WYFMS) aims to ensure that people come to agreement on practical issues so they can move on and make coparenting decisions that suit both parties. With offices in Leeds and Bradford, WYFMS covers the entire region. A non-profit organisation, it strives to keep the cost of mediation to a minimum and affordable to all. It holds a contract with the Legal Aid Agency should a person qualify for legal aid. If not, its fees range from around £309 – £739. Life&Style

Tackling Climate Change with Yorkshire Energy We’re proud to announce that collectively our customers have already saved 9,464 tonnes of CO2 from being produced by choosing green electricity. That’s the same amount of carbon that would be released from driving around the circumference of the earth 1,524 times! If you’re a customer of Yorkshire Energy, you may have seen an email letting you know how much carbon you’ve personally saved by choosing green electricity. We hope you’re as delighted as we are.

We think it’s important for our employees’ physical and mental health to walk, cycle or take public transport to work if they want. We facilitate this by offering free shower and changing facilities, a cycle to work scheme, and basing ourselves in Leeds city centre - just a five-minute walk from the train station. We’re pleased to say that over 90% of our staff walk, cycle or take public transport (we’re working on the 10%!). Could we do more? Absolutely, we know there’s always more we could do as a company to reduce our impact on the planet. We’re investigating ways to carbon offset the gas we supply, or even purchase a percentage of green gas for our customers if we can find a cost-effective way to do this. If you’re a Yorkshire Energy customer, you’ll be the first to hear if we start offering greener gas in the future.

How do we calculate carbon savings? Is green electricity more expensive? We compare our green electricity against the amount of CO2 that would be produced from generating electricity with a national average fuel mix. This gives us a good idea of how much individual customers, and our community as a whole, have saved. What else do Yorkshire Energy do? As well as supplying green electricity, we try to reduce our environmental impact in other areas where we can. For example, we reduce our paper usage by sending account statements by email rather than post. This also helps us keep costs to a minimum – savings which we pass on to our customers.

No! The cost of renewable energy has fallen significantly over the past decade, you may have seen our article in the previous edition of North Leeds Life discussing this topic. By combining technological efficiencies and low overheads, we’re one of the best value energy suppliers in the country.

Fed up with the big energy companies, Leeds?

Us too. Time to switch to one that’s just around the corner.

Redpoll Photo: Nick Upton rspb-images. com

Smaller and less conspicuous than other finches, the Redpoll is still a striking little bird, especially when seen in breeding plumage or in big flocks. It has a stripy brown body, black bib, and a red spot on its forehead, whilst breeding males also have a red flush on the breast. Its main food is tiny birch seeds, supplemented in Spring by grass seeds and small insects on conifers, and in Winter by alder seeds. It is not uncommon to see Redpolls on garden feeders, especially when their natural food source is scarce. They often hang upside down on high branches in search of food and, outside the breeding season, roam in large flocks, mixing with other small birds, such as Siskins. Their main habitat is northern birch forests and young conifer plantations, as well as hawthorn thickets and hedges. As food availability varies, Redpolls are often on the move. Redpolls from northern Britain mostly move

south in September and October, whilst some southern birds move to the Continent. You can tell when a group of Redpolls is flying over, as they give out a purring trill, which almost sounds like buzzing. The bird we mostly see in the UK is the Lesser Redpoll, which is a separate species from the Common Redpoll, which is bigger and paler, and more common in mainland Europe. Leeds RSPB Group

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

This month is made for gardening! Leaves unfurl their many shades of green, plant growth accelerates and flowerbeds fill with colour.

Sowing Seed

If you have seedlings of things like tomatoes and cucumbers that you are planning on keeping in the greenhouse all Summer, they can be transplanted to their greenhouse beds, grow bags or containers now. If you have outdoor varieties then keep them in smaller pots for now, and only plant them outside when all risk of frost has passed – usually towards the end of the month.

The sowing season is not over yet! The seeds of many varieties of flowers and vegetables can be sown directly into their allotted growing spaces outside in the garden.

York Gate Garden is Open for 2019 Season York Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel recently opened its gates for the 2019 season and this year Perennial, the charity that owns and manages the garden, celebrates its 180th anniversary. The delightful one-acre Arts & Crafts style garden is widely considered to be one of the UK’s best small gardens and was recently featured on BBC Gardeners’ World. The team of gardeners and volunteers have worked hard to get the garden ready for visitors and there is lots to see, including stunning tulip borders, pots overflowing with grape hyacinths, daffodils and a wide array of other Spring favourites. The garden was created by the Spencer family in the 20th century and is designed around a series of outdoor rooms, each with its own character. It offers plenty of practical inspiration for visitors. There is also an inviting tearoom, a gift shop and an events centre.

As well as conserving this much-loved garden, Perennial also offers help and support to everyone engaged in horticulture when they are in need. York Gate Garden is open Sunday to Thursday (12.30 – 4.30pm) from 1st April – 30th September. Standard admission £6 adults/ children (U-16) free. For further information visit: www.yorkgate.org.uk

Film Review By Samuel Payne

THE SISTERS BROTHERS WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: JACQUES AUDIARD STARRING: JOHN C. REILLY, JOAQUIN PHOENIX, JAKE GYLLENHAAL, RIZ AHMED, RUTGER HAUER CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 121 MINUTES “Charlie, when you kill a man, you end up with his father or his friends on your tail. It usually ends badly…”

'‘The Sisters Brothers’ finally gallops into British cinemas this Spring, following an acclaimed release in European and American territories. A darkly comic Western adapted from Patrick deWitt’s novel of the same name, it tells the tale of a pair of assassins out to capture a genius prospector and his unlikely ally. When the brothers decide to switch sides, the hunters soon become the hunted… Westerns were once the staple of a generation of moviegoers, yet it’s a novelty to catch one on the big screen today. It’s rarer still to come across a new Western which takes itself half seriously and isn’t just an indulgence project from Tarantino or the Coen Brothers. Inspired directors they may be, in a position to relive the movie styles they enjoy, but not necessarily those that studios can easily sell to modern audiences. But perhaps ‘The Sisters Brothers’ is going to change the landscape, offering one of the most innovative Western adventures of the decade. Delivering true to its traditions, the film strikes a jackpot combination of action, romance and comedy against a backdrop of expansive visuals and explosive effects. There’s also a glut of gore, violence and foul language to enjoy too. In Western tradition, the film is something of a buddy movie and gives us two double acts for the price of one. We explore the maverick struggles of Eli and Charlie Sisters, unpacking a troubled but charming relationship as the brothers attempt to track down their elusive mark. John C. Reilly — an actor blessed with a face for character — hands over a nuanced, sensitive study as Eli, who is more teddy bear than trailblazer. Joaquin Phoenix is magnetic as his volatile brother Charlie, a genuinely nasty anti-hero, yet ultimately compelling in his power and intensity.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmad are the assassins’ targets in a gently underplayed two-hander. Often the camera lingers on their exchanges, as if reading a romance, but in-step with the genre’s style it all remains light of touch. Memorable cameos from Rutger Hauer and Rebecca Root buttress the ensemble, but aside from some atmospheric crowd scenes, the streamlined cast feels intimately pared down. The film is the first English-spoken script directed by Jacques Audiard, and like the Spaghetti Westerns of the sixties, the picture is flushed with a continental visual flair. Perhaps it’s shot on film or uses old lenses, as there’s a dreamlike quality to the picture’s texture — an imperfect burnish which somehow steeps it in the past like a sepia photograph.

That said, there’s little romance for the 19th century West. Between bleeding, puking and peeing, Audiard’s lens focuses on an abundance of dirt, dust and grime, even down to the performers’ greasy hair and tobaccostained teeth. Occasional references to newfangled toothbrushes and luxurious, flushing lavatories serve as a poignant reminder of a mostly unglamorous frontier. Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat delivers a noteworthy score, drawing on plucked strings and stripped-down percussion to give the landscape a raw trailblazing feel. Some of the music takes cues from Ennio Morricone’s Spaghetti scores, which is no bad influence. A dynamic sound mix also ensures you feel each gunshot right to your core. ‘The Sisters Brothers’ is a brilliantly balanced new Western, offering visceral action, sharp wit and real pathos. It also deviates just enough from the established formula to surprise its audience. Leaving everything else on release in the dust, ‘The Sisters Brothers’ is a revisionist modern classic which demands to be enjoyed with all the scope, scale and sound of a big screen presentation. Saddle up and give it a shot.

An Evening with Andy Hamilton

Photo: Mark Howe

Award-winning comedian, comedy writer and director Andy Hamilton returns to Leeds with his first ever up close and personal show, ‘An Evening with Andy Hamilton’ on Tuesday 21st May at City Varieties.

@Howiehowe

From the creators of self-help comedy cabaret ‘You Need Help’ comes a one-off evening of sketches, standup, lip-syncs and town-planning on Thursday 9th May 7.30pm at Sheaf Street, LS10 1HD Self-help gurus Harry May-Bedell and Jessie Brooks have taken it upon themselves to ‘fix’ Leeds and its unsuspecting citizens. Part of Leeds International Festival, they have researched the issues facing the city and have put together a new vision for a City of The Future! Armed with a misplaced sense of confidence and no legitimate qualifications, they present their ‘vision’ for public consultation whether the public want it or not!

Leeds Needs Help is an evening of alternative comedy madness with one aim – to help the people of Leeds to ‘be normal or die trying’. Expect dark humour, sassy musical numbers and a selection of local guest comedy performers designed to leave you feeling fabulous or at least a little perplexed. If you’ve ever felt lost, if you’ve ever felt broken by the modern world, or just got really annoyed on the Inner Ring Road, then this is the show for you. Leeds Needs Help promises to solve all or none of these issues! Age restriction 18+ tickets £8.50 www.youneedhelp.co.uk

You will have the opportunity to ask him questions on any topic as he takes a look back at his extensive career in comedy. Beginning in 1976 as a contributor to Radio 4’s ‘Weekending’, Andy went on to pick up a raft of awards for co-writing and co-directing such household TV classics as ‘Drop The Dead Donkey’ and ‘Outnumbered’’. Most recently, his TV satires turned up the heat on Westminster with ‘Ballot Monkeys’ and ‘Power Monkeys’, and he and his co-writer, Guy Jenkin, also penned and directed the hit comedy feature film ‘What We Did on Our Holiday’. Andy’s numerous TV and radio credits include ‘Have I Got News for You’, ‘Q.I.’, ‘Andy Hamilton Sort of Remembers’, ‘The News Quiz’, ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’ and ‘Old Harry’s Game’. Andy’s debut novel, ‘The Star Witness’, was recently released via Outbound. Expect a funny and revealing night out with a master of comedy!

Leeds Jazz Festival 2019! The Leeds Jazz Festival returns from Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st July, with events also taking place the week before. This year’s headliner is Andy Sheppard, one of Europe’s leading saxophonists, who has made a significant impact on the international jazz scene, playing and writing for big bands and chamber orchestras as well as solo performances. He appears with Norwegian piano trio led by Espen Eriksen. A Jazz Celebration of Windrush features internationally acclaimed UK pianist Trevor Watkis, who has assembled an outstanding Anglo-American band to perform a retrospective of jazz trumpeter Dizzy Reece, who played with the best musicians in 1950’s London, as well as American jazz greats.

Electric Lady Big Band, a 16-piece ensemble featuring leading jazz improvisors including Laura Jurd, Yazz Ahmed, Nathaniel Facey and Iain Ballamy, tackle Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 album Electric Ladyland, featuring new arrangements by guitarist Denny Ilett. Pianist Shai Maestro is familiar to UK audiences through his work with bassist/composer Avishai Cohen. He appears with drummer Ziv Ravitz and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder – one of the most powerful and harmonious collaborations in jazz today. Pianist Sarah Tandy’s band includes some of the best voices on the London jazz scene. Other young stars include the sextet led by bassist Misha MullovAbbado and the quartet of saxman Leo Richardson.

The festival finale will be a tour de force of trios - Trio Trio Trio rolling seamlessly from one trio to another, one set to another and one style to another - from the soulful street vocals of Maggie Sommers to the raging urban horn of Alan Wilkinson. The Festival’s main venues are Leeds College of Music and the Wardrobe. For full details, visit www.jazzleedsfestival. co.uk

Muzikantes 2019: Songs from the Heart of Europe! Muzikantes Festival is held in Leeds every Summer. Billed as ‘Songs from the Heart of Europe’, it features artists from the triangle of the three seas – the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic.

The festival is organised by a handful of dedicated Leodiensian volunteers who are regular contributors to the Eastern European Folk Jam that takes place at the Chemic Tavern twice a month. Working with the numerous Eastern European communities in the area, the team has succeeded in creating an authentic tribute to the music and cultures that they love. This year the genres represented include Balkan, Klezmer, Ukrainian Folk Rock, and a Bulgarian Choir. The evening show will feature The Ukrainians, From East to East, Kibitz, and the Veda Slovena Bulgarian Choir, brought to us by BBC and WOMAD star Eugenia Georgieva. This is the rich dessert to an afternoon main course featuring pre-Christian spiritual music from Soma, and the hauntingly evocative voice and accordion of Katarzyna Wegrzyn. Expect to be moved, entranced and captivated. Maybe even to dance. Muzikantes Festival 2019 will be held at the Wardrobe in Leeds on 15th June, with the afternoon show beginning at 2pm. 80s Legends, Club Classics & a Movie Blockbuster The third Opera North In the City Festival gets underway in Friday 26th July with 80s Classical, featuring the sounds of this musically momentous decade revamped, expanded and rearranged for Opera North’s 60-piece orchestra, with vocals from the original artists.

Founder and lead vocalist of Bronski Beat and The Communards, Jimmy Somerville will mark the 35th anniversary of his single ‘Smalltown Boy’ with a newly orchestrated version, plus follow-up hits ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’, ‘Don't Leave Me This Way’ and more. Also on the bill are synth-pop superstars Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw, pure pop gold with T’Pau singer/ songwriter Carol Decker, and sophisti-pop from Johnny Hates Jazz.

“The 80s was such an amazing time for music”, said Cliff Masterson, who masterminded the 80s Classical and Back to Basics Concerts with Steve Anderson. “To be able to add a fresh dimension to these iconic songs is incredibly exciting. This is the first UK show to combine a symphony orchestra with multiple original artists from a musical decade brimming with nostalgia!” On Saturday 27th the focus shifts to the sounds that defined the next decade for a generation of clubbers, as The Symphonic Sounds of Back to Basics reunites legendary ‘Purveyor of Good Times’ Dave Beer with the Orchestra of Opera North. For the past two years the Basics concerts have offered a new way to experience clubbing, with orchestrallyenhanced dance anthems. The weekend closes with a blockbuster, courtesy of another 90s classic, Jurassic Park on Sunday 28th July. The Orchestra of Opera North is back beneath the big screen to accompany the film’s special effects, marauding raptors and deadly T-Rex with John Williams’ white-knuckle score. The UK has one of the highest levels of acid attacks in the world. On 7th May, as part of Leeds International Festival, Dr Almas Ahmed, from Bradford, will share the story of how she chose to confront the scourge of acid attacks and invented the world’s first acid-proof make-up. Curated by Thackray Medical Museum, the panel discussion will look at the people fighting against this aggressive crime. Joining Dr Ahmed will be Women’s Rights expert Danielle Cornish Spencer, who will address the international fight against violence towards women, and set out the global and political challenges of acid throwing; and Skin Scientist Dr Julie Thornton, who will talk about the challenge of skin burns, drawing on her experience of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit at the Centre for Skin Sciences, founded following the 1985 Bradford City disaster.

The use of acid as an extreme form of power – usually male power – is being tackled by grassroots women’s rights organisations, led by survivors and helped by organisations like ActionAid. Together these organisations are making a difference to the laws and social norms that allow these attacks to happen. Protecting skin from burns is a challenge. The science behind it is as complex as the organ itself. The internationally-renowned Centre for Skin Sciences has been integrating basic science with applied research for over 30 years to understand what is needed to defend and repair our skin. Facing Brave is on 7th May, 8pm at L19 Village at The Tetley. For tickets and further information about Leeds International Festival, visit https:// leedsinternationalfestival.com/

New Treatment Path for Synthetic Cannabinoids Forward Leeds, the alcohol and drug service, has developed a new approach to the growing problem of Synthetic Cannabinoid Receptor Agonists, known as ‘Spice’. It recognised the need for new ways to help those using the drug that addressed users’ complex needs, especially those rough sleeping. The group developed a flexible, rapid response treatment using available resources and psycho-social treatment interventions, to offer a reduction and detoxification programme. This new approach can avoid the need for admission to hospital or a residential detox. “We have listened to those who use our services and those who work most closely with them in the community”, said Dr Hallam, Clinical Director of Forward Leeds. “They want effective help and we have developed a new way to support their needs. The approach is already supporting those wishing to stop their ‘Spice’ use and there is growing evidence that we are having a positive effect.”

Lee Wilson, head of Forward Leeds said: “The support of Leeds City Council, the Street Outreach Service and the new Safer Leeds Street Support team have been important. Their understanding of this population is vital. A number of individuals have successfully gone through the new reduction and detoxification programme. This should lessen the impact of drug related harm and lighten the load on local and NHS resources.” Forward Leeds along with colleagues from Humankind were invited to present this work at the Sixth International Conference on Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands on 8th/ 9th April 2019. The conference aimed to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration on NPS among multidisciplinary professionals. The conference is jointly organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the World AntiDoping Agency, University of Hertfordshire, University of Maastricht.

Younger Life Sneha Donates Her Hair to Little Princess Trust Every year, Sneha Daga (12) received lots of presents for her birthday, but this year she wanted to do something different – she wanted to give something back, to give away something she loved. She had heard about the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free to children and young people up to the age of 24 who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses, and she recognised an opportunity.

“I have donated my hair”, said Sneha. “I cut 20 inches off and have sent it to the Little Princess Trust. Friends and family sponsored me, so I also managed to raise £800 for the Trust. I hope this small act will have a positive impact on a young person's life, make them smile and give them confidence to leave the house without fear of being judged or excluded.” The Trust relies solely on the efforts of enthusiastic community fundraisers. This was a lovely gesture by Sneha.

Nana, How Old is the Sea? Kate Edwards from Horsforth has a passion for writing. She has always loved writing articles and has dabbled in poetry from time to time. Recently, she self-published her first children's picture book – an idea which grew out of her love of the book ‘My Grandmother's Clock’ by Geraldine McCaughrean, which she loved reading to her youngest daughter. In it, Geraldine uses such beautiful language and imagery. Kate wanted to write something that would fire children's imaginations with cute and comforting characters. And so, ‘Nana, How Old is the Sea?’ was born! She even illustrated it herself – even though she had not drawn for years. “I love the sea and wanted to depict it as magical”, said Kate.

‘Nana, How Old is the Sea?’ (£5.99) is available now from kathryn_ed@yahoo.co.uk and will soon be available in some local book shops and via Amazon.

Twelve schools entered 38 teams (Approx.150 students) to compete and win prizes in different age groups – the tasks becoming increasingly more difficult with age. The design brief was to imagine that they were in a developing country that had experienced a disaster. With limited resources, they had to build a flashing advertising structure announcing a Rotary charity that would benefit the community. The choices were: Peace, Shelter Box, Aqua Box or the Polio Plus eradication programme.

The students had to work as a team, communicate, plan and explain their design in a written portfolio, then build the structure from the materials supplied. The final construction was then tested to see if it met the design brief. A team of judges was on hand to make suggestions to improve the models. “It's wonderful to see our Leeds school students tackle the project with such enthusiasm - there was a real buzz about the place”, said Lady Mayoress Cllr Pat Latty. “I hope it inspires them to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow. Leeds had world beating, innovative engineering companies

founded here and I hope that this competition inspires some of the students to place Leeds as a centre of engineering excellence once again.” Fay Best of WISE (Women in Engineering & Science) and three senior women managers from Siemens gave a presentation on the opportunities that exist for women in industry and the interesting and exciting, problem solving challenges they could face. The prize winners were: Foundation - Morley Academy; Intermediate - Grammar School at Leeds; Advanced - Abbey Grange Academy. The innovation prizes were won by Read School, Drax and Cockburn College of Arts. The competition is supported by Leeds University, Becketts University, West Yorkshire Society of Architects and Rotary Clubs and Councillors.
