Students at Leeds Trinity University’s production company, Trinity Vision, recently created a short, animated film to promote ‘The Cones’, a series of children’s books by local author Chris Madeley
projects, using student crew members as much as possible. The company has produced content for Made in Leeds, the NHS, Leeds City Council and Leeds Bradford Airport.
The series is designed to educates children about safety. Chris joined forces with Trinity Vision to transform her story ‘Cones on the Rails’ into a short animation. The story won the ‘Passenger Safety’ accolade at the 2017 UK Rail Industry Awards, after Chris collaborated with Grand Central Rail to produce and promote the book.
“I cannot express how delighted and how proud Team Cones is of everyone at Trinity Vision who contributed to the success of this project”, said Chris. “The creation of the characters and the messages on rail safety are beautifully depicted.

LPLS Unveils Plaque for Headingley Heroes of Science On 11th June, the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society (LPLS) will unveil a new plaque to commemorate two scientists whose work revolutionised biology and medicine. In 1941, whilst working in a converted stable at the Wool Industries Research Association on Headingley Lane, Archer Martin and Richard Synge developed a ground breaking new method of separating chemicals called amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Although invented for the analysis of wool fibres, the impact of Martin and Synge's method went much further than the textile industries of West Yorkshire. It allowed scientists to
unravel the chemical structure of medically important proteins such as insulin and was crucial to revealing the secret of how DNA carries genetic information. In recognition of their achievement, Martin and Synge were awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. As it celebrates the bicentenary of its founding in 1819, Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society is delighted to honour this important achievement for the city.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Dr Kirsten Hall
PROFESSOR LASZLO LORAND (1923 - 2018) Biochemist One Sunday afternoon in December 1948, a Hungarian medical student called Laszlo Lorand made a bold decision that would change his life – and probably broke his heart. Saying farewell to his fiancée and widowed mother in Budapest, he stepped aboard a train bound for Vienna and embarked on an epic journey that would eventually bring him to Leeds.
It was Lorand's passion for science that brought him to Leeds. During the previous Summer, he had been invited by the internationally renowned physicist William Astbury to visit his new department at the University of Leeds. Astbury was pioneering a new science called 'molecular biology' which used X-rays to study the shape of giant molecules found in living systems. For a young researcher like Lorand, the opportunity to work with such an eminent figure was too good to be missed – but his enthusiasm was not shared by his political masters in Hungary. In those early days of the Cold War, the prospect of a promising young scientist travelling to the West and falling under its influence was not one that was welcomed by the Communist authorities. As a result, Lorand was informed that he would not be allowed to travel to Leeds and his passport was to be cancelled. Having narrowly escaped deportation to Auschwitz where his father was murdered during the Nazi occupation of Hungary, Lorand was not willing to suffer under yet another totalitarian regime. Fleeing Hungary, he arrived in Leeds in January 1949 carrying only a suitcase that his mother, having heard of food shortages in Britain, had stuffed with roast goose and salami. Post war austerity had also taken its toll on his new working conditions. Astbury may have hoped that his new department would be at the cutting edge of molecular biology, but the reality was very different. The laboratories were housed in a converted residential property that was
plagued with an unreliable electricity supply and prone to flooding. Under these far from ideal conditions, Lorand began to study how blood clots form using material collected from either a local abbatoir or the Red Cross and then brought back in a bottle clutched tightly to his chest so as not to spill it on the tram ride home.

But perhaps one of the greatest challenges Lorand faced was when the Hungarian authorities demanded that he return. Astbury came to Lorand's defence arguing that his work was too important for him to return, saying: “As far as I can see, the only ‘crime’ that Lorand has committed is that he was rash enough to leave Hungary to work in this University and has therefore fallen under the bane of Western influences. In these days, as you know, that can be sufficient to damn anyone from the Eastern European countries, and it appears that it has indeed been sufficient to damn Lorand.” Thanks to Astbury's intervention, Lorand was allowed to remain in Leeds to study for a PhD - and the decision proved to be a wise one. He made a major discovery about the formation of blood clots which has been of huge medical significance and was the beginning of an illustrious and distinguished career in this field. After leaving Leeds in 1953 he went to the USA where he received numerous honours and was a Professor at Northwestern University until his death in December 2018.

Grease is the Word at The Grand ‘Grease’, described as the world’s best-loved musical, is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre from 19th June – 20th July and I think we are all going to be genuinely WOWed! The show stars Dan Partridge as Danny Zucco, Martha Kirby as Sandy and Peter Andre as Teen Angel. Dan most recently played Rum Tum Tugger in Cats (International Tour), Link in Hairspray (UK Tour) and Pepper in Mamma Mia! (Novello Theatre). Martha is making her professional debut and she is amazing! At the launch of the UK tour at City Varieties Music Hall, they treated us to a couple of numbers from the show and Peter, who hadn’t expected to sing, couldn’t resist breaking into
a little acapella rendition of Bill Withers’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ – we were blown away!

What we have in this trio is a Grease fan club! They all really love the show and have previously performed in it…apart from Peter. But now he is a happy man! Having grown up with Grease, dressed like Danny and seen the show (stage and cinema) 30 – 40 times he finally gets the chance to be part of it! He was approached some years ago to be Danny but couldn’t do it due to commitments. Now, he is in his element. Despite not being able to commit to every show on the tour, he grabbed the opportunity to be Teen Angel. We did wonder if the lyrics of Peter’s song really fit with his nice guy image…after all he’s really mean to Frenchie in ‘Beauty School Drop Out’. “It’s the perfect song”, he said. “It’s a bit cheeky, which suits me very well. And, really, it’s just the kind of

Opera North Presents Byrd-Cage in The Tiled Hall
Would You Adam & Eve It? – Ninety Chapters in Ninety Minutes!
The show ‘Would You Adam & Eve It?’ is what happens if you tell two guys who like to make people laugh to dramatise all 90 chapters from the first two books of the Bible in just 90 minutes!
As part of Yorkshire Sculpture International, Opera North’s 36-voice chorus will present ‘Byrd-Cage’ in Leeds Art Gallery’s Tiled Hall on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th June at 7.30 and 9pm. Byrd-Cage is a wide-ranging programme of vocal music chosen to explore the ability of sound to transform and affect space. Bringing together the early polyphony of Byrd and Gabrieli with the 20th and 21stcentury minimalism of John Cage and Arvo Pärt, the performances promise an immersion in the sculptural power and enduring mystery of the human voice. At the heart of the concerts is an excerpt from the revolutionary 1970 work ‘The Great Learning’, by the British composer Cornelius Cardew. Each singer chooses a pitch to begin, and sings the first line softly eight times, each time for the length

Help to Restore a Remarkable Collective’s ‘Paradise Piece of Tudor History Lost’ Premières at Leeds Town Hall As part of its plans to celebrate the 500th anniversary of The Field of Cloth of Gold, one of history’s greatest tournaments, the Royal Armouries Museum aims to bring a unique piece of Tudor history to life in recreating a helmet associated with Thomas West, a prominent military commander and Knight of the Garter in the Tudor Court. The Field of Cloth of Gold of 1520 was an extravagant Tudor sporting event. One of the largest and most expensive events of that century, it witnessed the meeting of King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France, two of the most powerful men in the world. The Royal Armouries hold one of the most compelling collections of arms and armour from the Tudor period anywhere in the world, including the imposing foot combat armours of King Henry VIII himself. To celebrate the anniversary next year, the museum will stage a special programme of events, including an international jousting tournament and the recreated helmet will be worn by one of the knights.
The helmet is a rare Anglo-Flemish great bascinet created for the ‘Joust Royal’. Royal Armouries experts believe it is the only such helmet in the world. What makes it particularly striking is its unusual triple-brow reinforce, clearly made by a skilled armourer. It will become part of the Royal Armouries handling and live interpretation collection. To achieve this, the museum is seeking public support to raise the £1,750 required to create it; this includes the costs of materials and the work of an expert armourer. “The Field of Cloth of Gold was arguably the most famous and extravagant event of its kind”, said Keith Dowen, Assistant Curator of European Armour. “The Royal Armouries collection includes some of the most significant arms and armour from the Tudor Court, including the armours of a young and athletic King Henry VIII, tailormade for The Field of Cloth of Gold.” For further information, visit http:// easydonate.org/PVDR005
Paradise Lost reunites the creative team behind last year’s critically acclaimed ‘Written in Fire’ by Vessel (aka composer & electronic musician Sebastian Gainsborough), and Rakhi Singh (violin), Manchester Collective's Music Director. Poems, Philosophy & Coffee Working with the award-winning Yorkshire poet, Helen Mort, long time Headingley resident and University of Leeds philosopher, Aaron Meskin, set out to explore ways in which poetry and philosophy might be in dialogue. They put together a book, Opposite: Poems, Philosophy & Coffee, which has just been published by Valley Press, an independent publisher in Scarborough. The core of the book comprises ten poems composed by Helen in response to her reading of ten recent philosophy essays. The philosophers then briefly respond to Helen’s poems. An introduction explains the genesis of the work, and two codas reflect on the relationships between coffee, philosophy and poetry. Topics addressed in the book include bad art, itches, meals, oversinging, portraits, rock climbing, street art, taste, tattoos, and a song by Belle and Sebastian.
Why coffee? Meskin and Mort hatched the plan for the book in one of their favorite local cafes, Opposite on Blenheim Terrace. The first poem that Helen wrote—the piece that gave them the idea for the project—was set in another of their favorite Leeds coffee places, Laynes Espresso, and responds to an essay by Aaron about taste. And the whole project was based on the thought that the book might be like a cafe (or bar) conversation between a poet and a philosopher. All the royalties from the book (which is dedicated to Leeds) are going to support Leeds Community Foundation, a charity that addresses childhood hunger and other issues.

The Leeds Guild of Singers Seventieth Anniversary The Leeds Guild of Singers turned 70 in 2018 and will be celebrating with an extravagant Anniversary Concert on Saturday 15th June, from 6.30pm at Leeds Minster, where singers and audience will enjoy the wonderful acoustics. Founded in 1948 by the late Dr Melville Cook, the choir gives regular a capella concerts in and around Leeds. The 25-strong chamber choir, under the direction of versatile conductor and singer Joseph Judge, is equally at home in Renaissance polyphony as with new works and commissions.
The choir will also venture into the realm of video games, with music by Jessica Curry. In addition, it has commissioned Matthew Oglesby, a young, up-and-coming composer, to write a piece commemorating the occasion. North Leeds Food Festival Returns to Roundhay The North Leeds Food Festival, now in its fourth year, returns to Roundhay Park on 22nd/23rd June, showcasing a huge selection of the region’s best food, drink and performing arts. This year there will be a new Live Chefs’ Demo area. “We’ve been thinking about introducing this for some time, now we feel the timing is right”, said Michael Johnston, Festival Director. “We’ve always been focused on local talent and the Chefs’ Demo area will be no different, with the region’s top chefs – including Josh Whitehead, The Foundry’s Matt Healy & Jamie Clinton of Shear’s Yard – rotating over the weekend.”
For beer enthusiasts, the Soldiers’ Ale House will offer over 22 local beers and ales and there will be eight pop up bars – including specialty wine, Prosecco, local Gin and Cider bars. “It’s been fantastic to see the festival evolve and the support from the local residents has been superb”, said Michael. “We aim to keep adding new features each year.” Additional activities will help to raise funds and awareness for Leeds Mind – the festival has raised nearly £10,000 for the charity over the past three years.
International cuisines lie at the heart of the festival and a whole range of traders will be there, from Greek favourites to Bolivian, plus Vegan specialists. The Grand Artisan Markets will now be housed in two giant marquees, where you can get your hands on everything from luxury pies & cheeses to artisan gin. Of course, there will also be crafts, music, live entertainment, children’s activities and wellbeing talks. Expect lots of comedy and street performances throughout the weekend. In collaboration with students from Leeds Arts University, the festival will also feature displays inspired by food and local history. Simeon Wood Returns to Bramhope Multi-instrumentalist Simeon Wood returns to Bramhope Methodist Church on Saturday 22nd June at 7.30pm with a show filled with music and laughter. Simeon's award-winning show is full of great music, ranging from John Denver to The Proclaimers and from Henry Mancini to J S Bach. There's something for everyone. He has performed all over the world, playing an ever-increasing array of unusual instruments. “My work as an itinerant musician has led me to play in some extraordinary venues”, said Simeon, “from caves to castles, palaces to giant redwood forests, as well as conventional festivals, cruise ships, halls, theatres and art centres.” Being a musician was never enough for Simeon. Helping People to Make a House a Home West Yorkshire House Clearance recently launched a scheme whereby they will provide furniture and household items free to people who need urgent help. The company is inviting voluntary agencies, city councillors and community workers to contact them and refer clients and service users who might need assistance.
The Headingley Greengrocer is open and on Saturday 4th May Alex Sobel MP led the celebrations for Headingley Development Trust’s [HDT] latest venture. Using its Headingley Investment Fund, HDT bought The Headingley Greengrocer from RK Harris & Sons, who ran the business for 44 years. This fund was built up through a community share issue - it really is using local money for local benefit. There has been a greengrocer’s shop on the premises for over 100 years. First established by Suttill Hannam, the building was converted into a successful and popular Headingley fruit and vegetable shop during the First World War. “We are thrilled to be continuing a fine tradition”, said Rachel Harkess, one of the directors. “We will be selling loose, high quality produce, local and English if possible and still catering to a range of budgets. And local really does mean local as some produce comes from Whiteleys in Pudsey! “We’ll also be avoiding plastic as far as we can. And the community is involved - many volunteers rolled up their sleeves to give the premises a new look and get it ready for opening.”
The shop has already set up a tie-in with Plate2Plate, which collects food waste and turns it into high quality compost (for sale at Headingley Farmers’ Market), and it will continue the association with Rainbow Junktion, the pay-as-you-feel community café at All Hallows Church. Newly appointed manager, Nitesh Dhiliwa, and his team are already excited by the response from shoppers. “As well as offering great produce, we want to give excellent customer service”, said Nitesh. “We want every customer to leave with a smile on their face.” The Headingley Greengrocer has been supported by a small business loan by the Natural Food Store, the wholefood and grocery shop opposite, which is a cooperative owned by the community. “We’re delighted to be working closely with them and also the excellent Headingley Farm Butcher next door”, said Nitesh. “Together, we’re making North Lane a great destination for shoppers.” The shop, at 50 North Lane, Headingley, is open Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm, and Saturday 8am – 4pm.
“We clear huge amounts of furniture and household items on a weekly basis”, said Sarah Carmody, Owner. “These items are usually sold or taken to the dump, despite being in excellent condition. There are many people in Leeds who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in new housing with no furniture or funds to pay for it. It could be someone escaping domestic violence who has been urgently rehoused, or a former homeless person who has finally got a roof over their head.” Once a person has been referred to West Yorkshire Housing Clearance, they are placed on a priority list with those in most need at the top of the list. When the items are available, they will be delivered free of charge. Lawnswood Roundabout Proposals I recently asked for an update on the proposals for the Lawnswood roundabout and was advised by Connecting Leeds that they are continuing to assess the options for addressing issues at the roundabout, including the scheme which was consulted on last year. The aim is to choose options that will make the site fit for purpose in the future and address the current deficiencies with respect to road safety (the site is ranked second on the Council’s list of junctions for concern). It will also address accessibility and mobility for pedestrians
and cyclists, and make the junction more resilient for bus services – in line with the aim to double bus use and encourage more sustainable patterns for travel, including walking and cycling. Further regard is being given to landscape and trees, alongside air quality. Connecting Leeds is also mindful of the motor vehicle emissions issue, especially for diesels, and this will be reflected in the technical work, looking at the different form of junctions and facilities possible at Lawnswood. The team is very mindful of the situation of the school and the journeys young people are making. The Council is committed to improving air quality, with a Clean Air Zone being prepared for implementation by the end of the year together with a package of complementary measures. Before any decisions are made, everything will be brought together into an options report.

There will be a Carnotaurus, which is 8m long and 3.6m high, in the Lower Market Hall. B) Library Hub – Two vacant units will host a new library hub. The British Library gave away over 300 books in the Market in April.

Beckett Park Annual Picnic on the Park The Friends of Beckett Park are holding their annual Summer Picnic on the Park on Sunday 7th July from 1 – 5pm on the Batcliffe Drive section of the Park. There is a raised area here, originally an air-raid shelter, that forms a natural stage and also sheltered, level ground for a picnic with shade if needed. This year’s Picnic on the Park will be bigger and better than ever. Once again Leeds jazz band legend Bassa Bassa will entertain from 2.30 – 4pm – part of Leeds City Council’s Summer Bands programme (thanks to Sue & Cllr Jonathan Bentley who funded this). As well as cake, toy and plant stalls, there will be hot food and drinks available, plus activities for the under-fives, and choirs to entertain you. The British Guide Dog Association will be there with their Multi Sensory Unit and stalls from various local interest groups. All are welcome! Entry is free, but bring your own picnic and a blanket or chairs to sit on and a little cash to spend.

Bramhope Summer Festival Bramhope Summer Festival kicks off with its popular Cabaret Evening on Saturday 1st June, 7.30pm at Bramhope Village Hall. This year the Derrick Harris Quartet will be joined by fabulous vocalist Kate Peters. The Harrogate Brass Band are back at West Park Leeds Rugby Club on 27th July; and, Simeon Wood will present his show full of music, anecdotes and humour at Bramhope Methodist Church Hall on 22nd June. The Fox and Hounds will host a Beer Festival on Saturday 6th July (12 – 7pm). Food will be available, there will be local business stalls and lots of fun for the whole family. Bramhope Tennis Club has organised a family afternoon at the Village Hall on 30th June. A coach will be on hand to help everyone improve their game, as part of ‘Wimbledon in Bramhope’! There will also be a BBQ, Cream Tea, and a licensed bar. Bramhope Methodist Film Club will show ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (cert 12A) on 18th June, and there will be a Mini Breeze for younger children at West Park Rugby Club (1 – 5pm) on 20th July. The Common Swift is a Summer migrant with an amazing lifestyle – it lives its whole life, apart from as a chick in the nest, on the wing – feeding, sleeping, and sometimes mating without ever touching ground. It is not a bird, therefore, that is easy to see close up. Its plumage is a sooty brown, with a pale patch under the chin, but against the sky it often appears black. It has a fast, flickering flight, and frequently glides on stiff, sickle shaped wings. In Britain, Swifts nest almost exclusively in buildings, especially old ones with access to roof space. The nest can be made of any available material, including straw, hay and feathers. They feed almost exclusively on flying insects, including airborne spiders, catching up to 10,000 a day. In bad weather, they will fly into the wind to get around an area of rain and can fly 800km in a day. To cope with long absences by the parents, swift eggs can survive chilling, and the development of the chick simply slows down until they return.
Swift calls are usually referred to as ‘screaming’ and can be clearly heard when a group flies through a builtup area. Planting up pots and containers for Summer is one of my favourite garden jobs. Try the local antique shops for interesting vessels to use, put in good quality potting compost and really pack in the plants for a fabulous display. Last year I filled a shallow basket (see photo) with Marguerites and sweetly scented Nemesia in shades of pink and enjoyed continuous flowers for months and months.
Don’t forget to put in the stakes and plant supports as your plants grow. Some climbers also need tying in as they send out new shoots

In hot dry spells the best way to get rid of all the little weed seedlings is to slice them clean off their roots using a sharp hoe, the tops can be left on the soil surface where they will wither and die. It’s a quick and easy way to keep things looking tidy. Larger, perennial weeds such as dandelions have to be dug out instead as the roots will continue to grow if left in the soil.

The award-winning Hospice gardens will be open to the public on Saturday 15th June, 10am – 2pm and you are invited to go along and explore the lovely grounds. You’ll find a woodland area, Mediterranean garden, the rill, labyrinth, Walls of Light, Path of Life garden and a raised Alpine bed. The St Gemma’s Forever Flowers will be displayed and there will also be various stalls, a raffle, quiz, entertainment, refreshments and a plant sale. Last Summer, the Hospice’s Open Gardens raised over £9,000, all of which went directly towards caring for patients with life limiting illnesses. The upkeep of the gardens would not be possible without the support of local people, some of whom are opening up their own gardens
to the public throughout the Summer and raising funds for St Gemma’s. These include Chapel Allerton Open Gardens on Sunday 16th June and Roundhay Gardens Ideas Trail on Sunday 23rd June. There are no stereotypes...”
The words of Ted Bundy, a figure who stands out as one of history’s most infamous criminals. In the 1970s, he was a dapper, promising law student at the University of Utah. In that same decade he also murdered and tortured dozens of young women. Bundy evaded police across several states for almost a decade and twice broke out of confinement to continue his frenzy. When he sacked his lawyers and defended himself in court, the unprecedented media attention gave him the profile and allure of a movie star. 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' explores the unbelievable events which led to Bundy’s international fame, sentencing and eventual execution, and is based on the testimony of Elizabeth Kendall, his girlfriend for some of that time. Choosing to retell the story as a mystery thriller from Kendall’s perspective, we see little of the crimes of which Bundy is accused, but rather the more mesmerising behaviour he exercised as prime suspect in a series of abductions and murder inquiries. Ultimately, the film poses the question we ask of most convicted killers: how did their nearest and dearest not know? The complex manipulation of Kendall and all of those close to Bundy is the crux of the film. It brilliantly exposes the man’s innate ability to coerce and impress himself upon almost everyone, including the judge who would sentence him. In a career-changing performance, ex-teen-idol Zac Efron shoulders the burden of resurrecting Bundy in a brave and centred portrayal which surpasses expectations – and has bizarrely rewarded him with some criticism for glamorising Bundy’s persona. But that’s exactly the point, and good reason why Efron’s clean-cut image makes for inspired casting. Not
only does the role play against type, it vividly re-establishes that Bundy was a knowingly handsome, cocksure manipulator who polished his persona and believed his own dialogue, just as an actor is trained to do. The film’s narrative leads us to believe him too. Nobody expects a monster to be young, svelte or charming, and Efron profits on expectations by playing Bundy like he played himself: a quietly confident, suave and intensely likeable student lawyer. The benefit of hindsight makes the charm-offensive all the more sinister, as you’re impelled to study the mechanisms of his manipulation in every micro expression. It’s a performance of a performance you just can’t stop watching. Lily Collins hands over a sympathetic study as Kendall, the young mother torn between commitment and fear as evidence mounts against her boyfriend. The dynamic between Collins and Efron is smartly downplayed, evidencing Bundy’s supposed wholesome home life character. A more interesting dynamic surfaces between Efron and Kaya Scodelario, as goggle-eyed Carol Ann Boone – a dedicated if not soppy acquaintance destined to become Bundy’s death-row wife and mother of his child. A bounty of high-profile supporting roles buttresses the film into a full ensemble piece, including John Malkovich as a grizzled judge, Jim Parsons as a memorably comical prosecutor and
Haley Joel Osment as a rather doughy if wellintentioned love interest for Kendall. The final major player is the landscape of Seventies’ America, aiding and assisting Bundy to stage a spectrum of identities without pursuit. It’s easy to forget there was a time before CCTV surveillance and digital tracking, but the film re-establishes the more primitive world through dimly lit streets and sedentary police officers, all underscored with a seductive disco-funk soundtrack. There’s also a liberal amount of archive footage in the mix, including original news reports, helping to further embed a documentary realism and period feel to the visuals. The takeaway from this film is not a catalogue of Bundy’s ghoulish atrocities, but rather a thrilling insight into a monster’s complex ability to charm, smarm and outperform almost everyone around him. Efron becomes Bundy with absolute conviction, to the extent that audiences will again begin to contest his crimes. The belief that such a persona continues to influence us into believing and even liking him, is perhaps the most chilling aspect of all.

Well-known four-piece Mestisa has played 'beautiful music from Latin America' for several years in venues across Leeds. From their childhood memories in South America, lead singers Ana and Barbara knew well that traditional music was even more vibrant when brought to life with wind and brass instruments. So, they invited some musicians from Los Camaradas salsa band to join them to create a special fiesta event on Friday 7th June, 8pm at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton.
Tiger Lillies, the Olivier Award winning and Grammy nominated godfathers of alternative cabaret, celebrate their thirtieth anniversary with a very special show at City Varieties on Wednesday 12th June at 8pm. One of the most provocative and genre-defying bands you’re likely to ever come across, the world of the Tiger Lillies is dark, peculiar and hilarious - their songs darkly funny, filled with moments of deep sadness and immense beauty. In this new show they take you on a trip into their newest album ‘Devil’s Fairground’, where temptation and sin await! Joining them from Los Camarades will be David Wallace (trombone) who created the new arrangements from his base in Roundhay. On trumpet is Jude Abbott, formerly of Chumbawamba and compère of the Musicport Festival Main Stage, and Sarah Jane Ross on clarinet. The special set for this fiesta includes the complex rhythms of Cuban Salsa, easy-dancing Cumbia from Colombia, and lively Mariachi tunes from Mexico. World on Our Doorstep in Chapel A The World on Our Doorstep festival of World Music returns to Chapel Allerton from 27th – 29th September, with concerts, workshops, jam sessions and pop-up gigs, featuring a wealth of local talent. There will be a pay-what-you-feel preview and fundraiser at Inkwell, Potternewton Lane, on Saturday 29th June (6 – 9pm). Enjoy a taste of Flamenco, Asian fusion from Nhagma, and traditional Irish music from Des Hurley and friends. There will also be an Auction of Instruments to help to raise funds for the Festival.
Pop-up gigs will be happening all weekend at Alley Cats. Headingley Music Festival 2019 Headingley Music Festival returns from Wednesday 26th June – Saturday 6th July. In the run up, (Saturday 15th June, 12 – 4pm), Shire Oak Primary School will present its annual Youth Music Day with local groups and schools performing. This is a great showcase for small groups and individuals. A choir will sing ‘Lean on Me’ with Headingley Voices adult choir. This is an easy song to learn, so any school that would like to join in would be very welcome. There will also be a series of Latin American dance classes on Thursdays before the festival, 7.15pm at HEART, covering Meringue, Salsa, Rumba, Mambo, Cha cha cha and Tango. These are group classes and you don’t need a partner. There will also be a free 50minute dance class for everyone booking the Nel Begley Quartet on Wednesday 3rd July. Leeds Combined Arts will host a Poetry and Music evening at HEART on
Wednesday 26th June, 7.30pm. Poet/musician Emma Sutton will host the first half and the second half will be an open mic for anyone who would like to read, sing or play. The festival consists of two trail runs (16 & 5 miles) on Saturday 10th August, and various walking routes covering 4, 5, 14, and 26 mile distances on Sunday 11th August. In North Leeds, the campaign raised nearly £4,500 through supermarket collections at Morrisons in Horsforth and Kirkstall, Asda at Holt Park, and Tesco in Roundhay and Seacroft. Every penny raised helps to fund the care and support that Marie Curie provide. They are there for everyone affected by a terminal illness. A Backstage Pass for City Varieties & Leeds Grand Theatre The City Varieties Music Hall and Leeds Grand Theatre Summer youth programme, Backstage Pass 2019, is two weeks of arts workshops for 7 – 17 year olds. Running from 12th – 23rd August, it is designed to introduce young people to various aspects of theatre and give those already engaged in the arts new opportunities to further their skills. Working alongside professional theatremakers and artists on the City Varieties’ stage and in the main studio at Leeds Grand Theatre, the workshops aim to spike the imagination and interest of every young person - from creating music in the junk percussion workshop to exploring physical comedy in the clowning session.
New this year is the Youth Theatre Taster Day (Mon 12 Aug, 10am - 3pm) – perfect for those who want to know what goes on at City Varieties’ Youth Theatre or want to work with the team behind the July production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. A Summer Camp for Young Leeds Musicians Young players who would like to perfect their skills could spend part of their Summer holidays playing with some of the region’s finest performers as Opera North holds its fourth Orchestra Camp at the University of Leeds.
Run in the university’s Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall from 27th – 30th August, the camp is open to instrument players of all abilities aged ten and above. They will be helped to develop their technical and musical ability in a friendly, supportive environment. Sessions will include instrumental, singing and creative composition. There will be a chance to explore exciting new music and to perform alongside the Orchestra of Opera North. The camp will culminate with a performance in the Broderick Hall at Leeds City Museum. The camp is open to young musicians at any level who play strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone), brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba), and percussion – no previous experience is required. The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest award for members of the Scout movement and 20 Explorer Scouts from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) were among 400 award winners at Windsor Castle in April for a day of celebration.

The award recognises exceptional achievement in a number of areas, including developing a skill such as first aid, engaging in physical activity, which could be a team sport or going to the gym regularly, and doing voluntary work over a 12-month period. GSAL voluntary projects have included working in a care home and helping as young leaders in cub packs and scout troops.
Otley Science Festival is set to develop even more fascinating activities as The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) becomes a sponsor. The week-long festival at Otley Courthouse every November includes science shows for pupils during the day, and informative, entertaining evening and lunchtime sessions. The Otley Science Fair at the end of the week brings together organisations from Yorkshire and beyond to show off the best in hands-on science. GSAL Scouts also undertook a four-day backpacking expedition across the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains and completed a five-day residential course. They also studied topics in the spheres of community, values and international friendship. The event included a parade and service in St George’s Chapel. HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and the Chief Scout Bear Grylls were there and both chatted to scouts assembled for the parade. “It was a once in a lifetime experience which brought home to us how big the scout community is”, said Miles Falivene-Rook, Year 13. “Scouting has taught me so many skills and has been a major part of my life which I plan to continue after I leave school.”

Lawnswood School invites you to its tenth Art & Design Exhibition, 6 – 8pm on Wednesday 3rd July. The exhibition will showcase the very best of Lawnswood talent in paintings, drawings, textiles, 3D and multimedia.
The Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund, set up in memory of teacher Ann Maguire, recently awarded over £26,000 to community groups and individuals across Leeds to develop young people’s aspirations in the Arts.
This joint project between staff, students and the Friends of Lawnswood School Association aims to inspire students by exhibiting their work to a professional standard, mimicking an exhibition ‘opening’, with live music from students, refreshments and artwork descriptions. Some of the exhibits will take you on the artist’s journey from first inspiration and conception, to development and final output.
The exhibition will also feature work from members of staff across all disciplines, with the aim of inspiring people to keep art in their lives, whatever field they may choose as a career. This is a free event open to both Lawnswood families and the general public. You will be asked to vote for your favourite artist and prizes, provided by Friends of Lawnswood School, will be awarded. It promises to be an inspirational and celebratory event.
The standard of work is exceptional and, as in previous years, there will be the opportunity to commission and purchase particular pieces.
Managed by Leeds Community Foundation, the Fund has distributed grants of up to £5,000 to five groups: Dance Zone Action Leeds (DAZL), which works with young people to improve their emotional wellbeing and resilience via workshops, dance and film; DJ School UK, which will provide bursaries for its accredited DJ course, enabling young people to build relevant skills and learn about the industry; New Wortley Community Association, which provides free drama sessions to develop skills in acting, self-expression, singing and dance; Shakespeare Schools Foundation, which will host the Shakespeare Schools Festival, working with local schools to make Shakespeare accessible; and Leeds West Indian Carnival, which transfers skills in carnival arts of costume design and construction to young people of Caribbean descent. The Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund also offers bursaries of up to £500 to young people under 18 who, without financial support, would be unable to develop their skills within the arts.
