IT’S PANTO ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AT CITY VARIETIES Following hot on the heels of the successes of Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Aladdin, the Rock ’n’ Roll Panto returns to City Varieties in December with Peter Rowe’s Dick Whittington.

You can expect all the traditional elements of a family pantomime, with lots of audience interaction and heaps of corny gags – all soundtracked by classic pop and soul hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond.

Christmas at the Carriageworks just wouldn’t be Christmas without Jez! This year he’s back to create more comedy clowning and chaos as Muddles.

Jonathan Ansell shot to fame in pop-opera band G4 in the first series of The X Factor and since then has rarely been out of the spotlight. He will play the perfect panto prince in this new production of Snow White, which will incorporate great special effects and, of course, seven dwarfs full of mischief and merriment!

RAYMOND BRIGGS’ FATHER CHRISTMAS RETURNS TO THE PLAYHOUSE Following last year’s success, this co-production with the Lyric Hammersmith and Pins and Needles returns to West Yorkshire Playhouse. Raymond Briggs’ ‘Father Christmas’ is a stunningly visual show for ages 2-6. It is packed full of fun, giggles and wonderful surprises.

Bloomin’ Christmas! Father Christmas awakes from a dream of summer sun only to realise that it’s bloomin’ Christmas Eve and the start of his longest night of the year. STARS Choose Laughter and Music for Next Show STARS, the North Leeds theatre group, have picked out a comic gem for their next production.

Little London in inner city Leeds is one of the most diverse communities in the city. Largely comprising local authority housing built in the 1950s – 1960s, it is home to people of wide-ranging social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. he publication of ‘A Little Bit of History’, funded by the Heritage Lottery, is the culmination of a project undertaken by Little London Arts from 2010 to 2014. Its aims were to discover and share aspects of the history of the area through the experience of residents and former residents.

The project was carried out through local research,

interviews, drop-in sessions and various events. Words are combined with images of life in Little London from individuals’ family photo albums.

n exciting new series of story workshops has started in Leeds. Led by author Daniel IngramBrown, these are a mixture of creative writing workshops, discussion seminars and a book group. The programme will culminate in the publication of a book of short stories.

The workshops, which are free, will be held monthly (except December) until next June, 7 - 9.30pm at the Leeds Church Institute near the Corn Exchange. No writing experience is necessary, just a willingness to have a go. It doesn’t matter if you missed the first workshop in September, you are still welcome to join in.

Daniel is a Yorkshirebased author and theatre producer involved in a wide range of work, from writing for children to community theatre and contemporary performance. He has over 15 years experience of writing and directing plays, and novels. He was recently involved in The Leeds Story Cycle, a collaboration with young people, asylum seekers, students, retired church folk, writers and recovering addicts. He is also Chair of the Leeds Big Bookend Festival.

David Greed, long-serving leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, vividly remembers the day in 1989 when he expected to play Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in Grassington with the Sinfonia of Leeds. “It was exciting, and I was looking forward to it. What I didn’t see coming was being asked at very short notice to conduct and direct the entire concert, and become the orchestra’s Music Director!” wenty-five years on, David still leads this remarkable group, having overseen its transformation from a small chamber ensemble to a full-size symphony orchestra. A life spent in the orchestra pit has proved invaluable, allowing him to observe different conductors’ strengths and weaknesses.

“With a non-professional orchestra you have to be very clear in everything you do”, said David. “It’s vital to remember that, when a rehearsal starts at 7.30pm on a Monday evening, most of your players have already spent a day at work. It takes patience – especially in the first stage of a rehearsal – but the orchestra’s achievements are an inspiration.”

Juggling the Sinfonia with a full-time career doesn’t make for an easy life, so Greed now shares the season with his Opera North colleague Anthony Kraus. The two will collaborate on the Sinfonia’s concert on 8th November at Leeds University’s Great Hall – Kraus accompanying Greed as soloist in Shostakovich’s epic Violin Concerto No 1.

The Sinfonia’s repertoire has become far more ambitious – recent programmes have included weighty symphonies by Mahler, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Liz and Terry Bramall Trust, and renewed support from the Sinfonia patrons, the orchestra can continue to push the boundaries. David is looking forward to directing his all-time favourite piece, Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloe, on 17th January 2015 at St Edmund’s Church, Roundhay.

Woodbine Willie Returns to Leeds Minster ‘Woodbine Willie’ returns to Leeds Minster on Tuesday 4th November in a theatrical performance by Searchlight Theatre Company. The production honours Leeds born poet and priest, Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, affectionately known as Woodbine Willie, and marks the centenary of the First World War. An Anglican priest, he volunteered as chaplain on the Western Front during the First World War. He won the Military Cross for his reckless courage, running into No Man’s Land to help the wounded. This production is based on original interviews with those who knew and loved him. A deep and real concern for his fellow man drove him relentlessly, and he played a vital role on battlefields, in the trenches and then the slums, sharing the love of God, and Woodbine cigarettes at a time when men needed both desperately.

The show is the ideal addition to this year’s centenary celebrations, using drama, war poems and music to bring an incredible life to the stage as well as highlighting the horrors of the trenches.

‘Woodbine Willie’ is at Leeds Minster at 7.45pm on Tuesday 4th November.

The Dance Studio in Mabgate Mills presented their first showcase on 27th September at the Carriageworks Theatre, in aid of the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal. ver 150 local dancers (90% of whom were adult performers), gathered together to celebrate their love of dance, to a packed audience and presented 26 performances in more than 15 different dance styles.

The show covered a multitude of different eras, cultures, and dance styles, including Charleston, Street, Tap, Contemporary, Flamenco, Belly Dance, Afrobeat, Lindy Hop, Indian Classical Dance, Jazz, Cuban Rumba, and Reggaeton.

The evening was a resounding success, and although the final figure has yet to be confirmed, the show raised in excess of £2,000 for the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal.

The Spirit of Christmas Leeds Male Voice Choir is set to light up Leeds Minster with ‘The Spirit of Christmas’, on Saturday 13th December.

We have planned a cornucopia of Christmas music Beanstalk, the local children’s literacy charity, is part of a new campaign to get all eleven year olds reading well by 2025. Apparently, one and a half million children will reach the age of 11 unable to read well unless action is taken to tackle the reading crisis. alled ‘Read On Get On’, the coalition is made up of teachers, parents, businesses and charities including Save the Children.

Last year, 1,128 pupils left primary schools in Leeds unable to read to the required level.

The charity currently supports 372 children in over 60 schools across Leeds and Bradford and is currently recruiting and training volunteers to work with children who are falling behind with their reading.

The ‘Read On. Get On’ campaign aims to create a nation of strong readers by supporting parents to read with young children; urging people to volunteer to help disadvantaged children improve their reading;

Holt Park Regeneration Project I recently asked the Scrutiny Board (Housing and Regeneration) to consider carrying out an inquiry into the Holt Park Regeneration Project in terms of the potential brownfield site developments that could be brought forward, the mix of housing that could be produced, plus other regeneration benefits. I was concerned that the consultation exercise carried out with local residents had been concluded for some time

Since being elected in May, I have been thinking about the impact I’d like to make during my time as a Councillor.

Leeds City Council’s work towards making Leeds an age-friendly city is really inspiring, and I recently spoke in Council about how we can support older people in our communities who may become isolated and suffer from loneliness or dementia.

I am honoured to represent Headingley, one of the most diverse and vibrant corners of Leeds. When speaking to people on the street or in community meetings, I’m often told that they love living in an area which includes families, older people and students too.

Headingley’s diversity makes it an amazing place to live. But there are some aspects that may make it harder for families and older people, and that’s what I hope to address. Leeds and Headingley must be a

and things are not progressing at the speed either I or residents would like. A report went to the Scrutiny Board in September and an extract of the report includes the following update: 1.

Following the public consultation in late 2013, Asda approached the Council and confirmed a serious interest in reconfiguring their existing store, presenting an alternative redevelopment option which is being explored further. This would involve the acquisition by Asda of Council-owned land. Asda requested access to the land to undertake a survey. It is anticipated that the survey will take place in the Autumn, following which Asda will present their proposals.

The involvement of Asda will help to secure a more comprehensive regeneration and development approach to the

Member of Parliament for Leeds North West Every year Parliament designates a week of activities aimed at informing people of the way that our democracy works and tries to inspire them to get involved and play their part as a British citizen in having a say in how our country is run. Parliament Week this year (14-20 November) is working in partnership with over 260 organisations from across the UK to put together a programme that includes historical walks, art exhibitions, online debates, panel discussions, school council projects and more.

Parliament Week also has a strong focus on young people, and schools are invited to get involved in a variety of ways. This year there is to be a social media campaign called ‘Do Democracy’ aimed specifically at 16 to 24 year olds, to encourage younger people to participate in politics.

Schools are always welcomed into the Palace of Westminster and I particularly enjoy meeting visiting students and teachers. What, another Referendum?

The purpose of the Adel Neighbourhood Forum, a recognised body of local volunteers, is to give a renewed sense of ownership to the Adel Community on land development and the issues arising.

We are in the process of finalising a draft of The Neighbourhood Plan for Adel, which has been informed by our open days, surveys, focus groups and events. We are grateful for the financial support from ‘Locality’, Leeds City Council and local residents and businesses.

The Plan will not only

cover the design, layout, character and mix of proposed housing, but also critical issues arising from such developments such as education provision, traffic, heritage and green issues, community facilities and business support. This Plan will be circulated on-line and in printed form so that the Community can voice any concerns, omissions and amendments.

The Plan will then be subject to a referendum and, like recent events in Scotland, a 50% plus majority will be required for the Plan to be accepted.

Once accepted it will give The Forum statutory powers to be formally consulted on development issues. We welcome any feedback from residents and those with an interest in Adel.

eadingley is pleased to report that the Council has now formally designated the Headingley Neighbourhood Area and Forum. This means that the Forum can now meet to consider the needs and aspirations of the area, and thence to prepare a Headingley Neighbourhood Plan.

The purpose of neighbourhood planning is to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of local communities.

Residents worked hard to put together our application for designation in only a month.

Unfortunately, it took a full six months from the submission of the application to the final designation!

Meanwhile, the government has been consulting on neighbourhood planning and other planning matters. The good news is that they plan to streamline the neighbourhood

planning process. The bad news is that they propose to remove, not only from local councils, but also from local neighbourhoods, the very powers that enable them to manage development in the interests of everyone.

In the meantime, the Council has given Neighbourhood Forums

So our Interim Forum has put forward a number of new proposals for protected greenspaces, in Headingley Town Centre and across the Area, often reflecting our historic heritage (like the remnant of the old village green). Headingley is so intensively developed, we have proposed no new housing sites. But we have suggested amendments as to how Headingley Centre might develop.

Growth in the garden has slowed right down and leaves are falling as the days become shorter.

There is no need to rush out and tidy up every fallen leaf but it’s wise not to let them sit on the lawn for too long, or to allow deep drifts of leaves to swamp the plants in your borders. A thin layer can be left for worms to pull into their burrows and it can act as an insulating mulch.

Collected leaves rot down more slowly than the rest of the compost so it is a good idea to keep them separate. I usually scoop mine into black bin bags and leave them in a corner of the garden to decompose.

ickey Thompson, the new manager at The Cardigan Arms on Kirkstall Road, is determined to revitalise the pub as a music and arts hub.

He has already enlisted the help of Ben ‘Blue’ Waters to establish a regular Blues Club.

The first event, held in August and featuring an electric band and four acoustic acts, was a great success. The club will start in earnest in January 2015, on the last Sat of every month.

To talk about this film is to attempt to navigate one’s way through a minefield of spoilers. If you’ve not yet seen it and managed to go this long without having had it ruined for you, then firstly congratulations and secondly, why haven’t you seen it yet?

Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel (she also penned the screenplay) Gone Girl is a film that ties its audience in knots that tighten exponentially throughout its running time. Ostensibly presented as a murder mystery, as the layers are peeled back it’s revealed that the troubling themes examined here run deeper than flesh and blood; it’s emotional violence that lies at its dark heart.

Nick and Amy Dunne are a married couple. In flashback we see them meet and fall in love, brief glimpses of the halcyon days of their (nauseatingly smug) early courtship and, after their move from New York to Nick’s small Missouri hometown, the inevitable trouble-in-paradise cracks beginning to show.

On the morning of their fifth anniversary Amy disappears and Nick is suspected of her murder.

Immediately finding himself under scrutiny by the law and at the centre of a media circus, Nick doesn’t exactly appear innocent or, at least, is certainly not as distraught as he should be. In

fact, the presumption of guilt is such that this is less a whodunit and more a how-dunit, his flimsy defence unravelling from the word go and only his twin sister taking him at his word.

And that’s pretty much the extent of the plot outline I’m at liberty to offer here. I’ll only say further (and I hope this isn’t a spoiler) that there’s a WTF

framework of a crime thriller we’re given a cruel dissection ofmarriage

moment around the midpoint that will leave you reeling.

In bringing this novel to the screen David Fincher is undoubtedly the man for the job.

One of the few directors I know who can make sunlight look dark and foreboding, Fincher conducts this psychodrama with the cold,

Within the framework of a crime thriller we’re given a cruel dissection of relationships, marriage in particular, the roles people are expected to play and what’s going on beneath the surface. How much do we really know about the people we share our lives with and how deep and wide is the gulf between public presentation and perception and private deceit, discord and malice?

“What are you thinking?

What are you feeling?” asks Nick in voiceover, “What have we done to each other? What will we do?”

Ben Affleck (often unfairly underestimated) and Rosamund Pike both put in sterling work as Nick and Amy, managing to make their unsympathetic characters nonetheless compelling, and a

great supporting cast is headed up by Kim Dickens (of TV’s Deadwood and Treme) and Tyler Perry successfully playing against type.

Unrelentingly gripping to the last, Gone Girl is masterfully done and Fincher is once again abetted in his dark arts by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross who provide a chilling and menacingly pulsating score.

Not least due to the uncomfortable questions it raises, the film resonates for some time after viewing and I’d unreservedly recommend it. Volunteers Needed at St Chad’s Cricket Club

As well as new players and sponsors, the club is also looking for volunteers.

Last September, North Leeds Life ran a small article about Ellie Hopkinson, a 16 year old Adel resident, who was heading to Arctic Norway as one of the youngest members of a British Exploring Society expedition. ow 17, Ellie has returned from spending the Summer in Arctic Norway and would like to thank our readers for their support.

“I was overwhelmed by the support I received from friends, I was family and strangers alike”, said Ellie. “Thank you to everyone who overwhelmed helped me reach my fundraising target. by the “The time I spent in the Arctic support I was truly fantastic. We divided our time between scientific study and received from adventure. I had some exciting and memorable times on the icecap friends, family (including falling into a crevasse!), and strangers and scaled some breathtaking peaks. In science we concentrated alike on analysing glacial lake algae in partnership with a local university.

To raise funds, Ellie organised a science show with children’s TV personality ‘Dr Bunhead’. She also held cake, card and jam sales, and undertook sponsored challenges, including the Three Peaks.

new £1 million boathouse, situated next to Thwaite Mills in Stourton, recently threw open its doors to rowers from across Leeds.

The new facility will be used by both Leeds Rowing Club and Leeds University Boat Club. It includes a boat store for up to 50 boats, changing facilities, a meeting/training room and car parking. The boathouse has been built as the result of a partnership between the University of Leeds, Leeds Rowing Club, British Rowing and Leeds University Union and has been funded by the University, British Rowing, Sport England and WREN, which awards grants for community projects.

“The new boathouse is a fantastic addition to the University’s sporting facilities”, said Rob Wadsworth, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at the University of Leeds. “It is also a great example of local and national organisations coming together to see an important project realised.”

David Cottrell, vice chair of Leeds Rowing Club commented: “In practical terms, the new boathouse will mean we are able to increase our membership threefold and bring the sport to many more people of all ages and abilities. We recently went along to the echoey hall of Leeds Futsal Arena to see Leeds Roller Dolls and seven other teams from around the region do battle in the Great Yorkshire Showdown. stablished in 2007, Leeds Roller Dolls (LRD) were Yorkshire’s first roller derby team and, since gaining membership of the Women’s Flat track Derby Association (WFTDA), they are now skating into the international competitive arena. Although the sport has been gaining recognition and popularity in the last decade or so, its roots can be traced back to the depression era of the 1930s.

In those days it was primarily an endurance event with skaters just whizzing around until they dropped. By the 70s things had developed somewhat but it was still less sport and more spectacle, not unlike wrestling with bouts being largely staged. Over time things grew more competitive and those participating in roller derby became determined to re-imagine it as an organised, modern sport leading to the formation of the WFTDA in 2006.

Today roller derby is a pretty big deal with over 100 teams in the UK. It’s fast, furious, and wildly exciting.

The evolution of the sport to this point has been a distinctly femaleled endeavour, with more and more people attracted to this intensely physical, empowering pursuit for badass women. Previously, the attention the sport received tended to focus on its stylistic trappings; think hot-pants, fishnets and tattoos (a glammed-up, Hollywood version of which was portrayed in Drew Barrymore’s fun 2009 movie, Whip It) but recently those involved have been determined to show that roller derby is about much more than its punk aesthetic and is an inclusive, accessible spectator sport.

Roller derby does retain similarities with the punk scene, however (or more accurately, the Riot Grrrl movement) with its fiercely DIY ethos and the fact that it is a sport spearheaded by women who make the rules and call the

shots.

As the sport has its origins in the US (due to an abundance of roller rinks in pretty much every town) the structure of gameplay is not unlike American football. However, despite the frequent stoppages and the numerous rules and regulations, roller derby is easy to get on board with and it takes no time at all to pick up on the gist of the action.

It is a fast-paced, full contact, all-female sport played on quad roller skates. In a bout each team fields a point scoring skater (called a ‘jammer’) whose object is to lap as many opposing skaters as they can. The remaining skaters work to both block the opposing jammer, and clear a path for their own jammer to help them score points.

Over 90 women and girls currently skate in the Leeds Roller Dolls League – at competitive, recreational and junior league levels. The pupil voice is strong and effective, which is evident in the various pupil voice groups and the strong Investors in Pupils focus.

The School Council is an effective key stakeholder with a good structure and the children know what their roles and responsibilities are within the Council. ake Frood is in Y2 at Carr Manor Primary School and became the youngest Black Belt in the world aged just five!

He trains four times a week at National Martial Arts College in Horsforth and is taking his second degree black belt test in March 2015.

Jake was chosen to represent England after qualifying at the English Open Championship in Birmingham – a massive honour at such a young age.

He competed in the Under-12 Division (Light contact category) and was the youngest competitor in the whole competition. He was so proud to stand on the podium

and collect his Bronze medal.

Following this, Jake attended the Child of the Year Awards 2014 in Scunthorpe, where he had been shortlisted for his achievements in becoming the ‘Youngest Black Belt in the World’, overcoming so many illnesses and being an inspiration to other children. Here he won the Child of the Year 2014 Steve Prescott Sports Award and was thrilled to receive his award from actor Scott Maslen (Eastenders.

Local theatre company, Mimika, is presenting a new performance, Small Worlds, at Headingley HEART on Saturday 1st November at 10 and 11.30am, and 1 and 2.30pm. ased on the border between Meanwood and Headingley, Mimika is internationally re-nowned and ‘Small Worlds’ actually had its world premiere in Singapore and its European premier in Madrid.

Mimika’s performances are presented in a large white tent where children and adults alike experience an intimate, atmospheric and spellbinding

show full of magical and poetic imagery. Using immersive soundtracks, puppetry, digital animation and miniature land-scapes, doors are opened to reveal moving images, a wooden set transforms into a river bank, a tiny fox plays in a pop-up meadow and a cat and a girl dream their stories. All without a word being spoken.

Greg Mulholland MP recently congratulated the children, staff and governors of Bramhope Primary School on achieving three important awards. he school met the demanding standards for the Equalities Award, the International Schools’ Award and the Healthy Schools’ Award and all three were presented at a recent school assembly. The Froebelian School in Horsforth recently welcomed paralympic sprinter Lee Whiteley to a special assembly. Lee gave an inspirational talk and hosted a Q&A session about his career as an athlete.

The children were keen to find out about the life of an athlete. Lee gave them exercise tips and advice on healthy eating.

He then led the children in a sponsored fitness circuit.

The money raised will be used to buy sports equipment and support Team GB and Paralympic athletes.

Lee’s visit was truly inspirational and left both staff and pupils feeling really motivated. He showed just what could be achieved when you go for it!

Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis. Last year their UK foodbank network fed over 128,000 people.

The school decided to support the food bank this year so as to benefit families living in the community.
