ow, Chris Watson explores the undiscovered sonic landscape of the island in a new sound installation specially created for the Howard Assembly Room in Leeds and using an astonishing array of animal inhabitants and natural environments, composed from compelling wildlife sounds from his global archive.

Best known as the sound recordist for BBC programmes, including the awardwinning Frozen Planet, and described by the Guardian as ‘the daddy of wildlife and sound recording’, Chris Watson was also a founding member of the influential experimental music group Cabaret Voltaire and has released a number of albums of edited field recordings.

The installation takes visitors on

a expedition - from shore to summit, dawn to dusk, all in a cycle of rhythm, sound and beautiful lighting that lasts around 20 minutes. From the swirling pulse of the currents around the island to the haunting siren song of whales and seals, the otherworldly cries of Manx shearwaters and the deep roar of black howler monkeys, Hy Brasil moves around the visitor in three dimensional life, through ambi-sonic sound, enhanced by gorgeously atmospheric lighting by Lighting Designer Tim Skelly.

Hy-Brasil is at Howard Assembly Room from Friday 28th February – Saturday 15th March. It is open from 2 – 8pm, Tuesdays – Saturdays and runs on a 30 minute loop.

MARY EDITH PECHEY- PHIPSON, MD Pioneering doctor and campaigner

In 1877 a remarkable woman came to live and work in Leeds. Her name was Edith Pechey, already well known as one of the tiny band of intrepid women who had dared to challenge the medical establishment, fighting – and ultimately winning – a long and bitter battle to gain medical qualifications and be allowed to practise. When she arrived in Leeds she was one of only seven women in the country who had won the right to be registered as a doctor.

Edith Pechey came originally from the village of Langham, Essex, the sixth child of the Baptist Minister, born in 1845. She inherited a love of learning from her parents, and her first work was in teaching, but her ambition was to study and practise medicine, particularly in the field of women’s health. Many women were dying in childbirth and infant deaths were commonplace, yet obstetrics did not feature in medical training, and medicine was a totally male preserve.

Otley Green Fair This year’s Green Fair takes place at Otley Courthouse, Courthouse Street, Otley on Saturday 13th April, 10am – 4pm and entry is free.

Northern Ballet brings one of the world’s best-known icons, Cleopatra, back to the stage at Leeds Grand Theatre from Thursday 6th – Saturday 15th March.

Premiered in Leeds in February 2011, Cleopatra toured extensively throughout the UK. It was seen by more than 54,000 people and generating more than £1 million at the box office.

The ballet is choreographed by artistic director David Nixon to a score by celebrated composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, best known for Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. It charts Cleopatra’s sensational rise to power, her scandalous romances with the most powerful men in history, and her eventual downfall.

“From the moment David Nixon suggested the ballet of Cleopatra, it took me five years to find an elusive spark of inspiration”, said Claude-Michel Schönberg. “I had to understand how sensuous the way of life was in Egypt, the opposite to the culture of Rome. I realised that the chaos of being in love with such a woman as Cleopatra put the Roman Emperor and his Empire in danger. That’s what the score is trying to reflect without falling into clichés associated with that era.”

David Nixon explains: “I have been fascinated by the story of Cleopatra for a long time.

Ruth Waterman to Conduct The Sam Mendes production of King Lear, now showing at The National Theatre, features special CGI weather effects produced by Leeds Trinity University radio lecturer, Bob Walmsley.

King Lear premiered at The National Theatre in January and will be screened live in cinemas across the UK on 1 May, including all of Leeds’ multiplexes.

Known internationally as a violinist, broadcaster, speaker and educator, Ruth has conducted orchestras in places as diverse as the Winter Palace in St Petersburg and the ruins of Sarajevo. In a programme designed to show the often neglected links between three major composers of the 18th century – Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn, Ruth will use the orchestra to illustrate the music with a short talk.

The programme includes Mozart (Linz Symphony), Beethoven, two movements from Prometheus and Haydn Symphony no.88.

Irish History Month 2014

Building on the success of last year’s festival, and continuing WYP’s artistic director James Brining’s vision for an innovative, forward thinking theatre that engages with its local creative community, TRANSFORM returns to the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 27th – 30th March.

This year it takes place over one high-impact weekend, exploding into every nook and cranny of the Playhouse and beyond. Continuing to make Leeds a home for imaginative collaboration and experimentation, the Playhouse is commissioning and producing new work as well as hosting some of the UKs most innovative artists as guest performers. TRANSFORM also offers a snapshot of tomorrow’s performance today, in a unique series of works in progress, each developed at the Playhouse, and provides a platform for artist residencies, participatory events, discussion and celebration.

As part of this year’s festival the Playhouse is working closely with local artists Selina Thompson and Hannah Bruce & Company to present two brand-new pieces of work, and continues an ongoing collaboration with Chris Goode & Company. Alongside this home grown work, bold artists and theatre makers such as Inua Ellams, Made In China, Uninvited Guests, Third Angel and resident company Unlimited Theatre present and perform.

On the now notorious Saturday night of Transform, internationally renowned and self-styled ‘low-rent Liberace’, Scottee, copresents The TRANSFORM Variety Night featuring an array of the world’s greatest variety acts including 21st century cabaret stars like Bourgeois & Maurice, internationally renowned aerial artist Empress Stah, hula hoop master and comedic genius Jess Love, infamous hanky lady Ursula Martinez, the Winner of Baghdad’s got Talent, alongside Newcastle’s new wave showgirl Ginger Johnson, and Wendy Watts performing magic like you have never seen before.

Leeds jazz band ‘A New Perspective’ launches the festival - and there are free performances by Leeds-based Paper Birds, Playhouse Channel 4 Playwright in Residence Zodwa Nyoni, and Gracefool Collective. Irish History Month, an initiative of the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, is now in its eighth year. It aims to promote knowledge of Irish History and experiences in Britain and beyond, disseminating information on the many positive contributions that Irish people have made to British society, and introducing new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage, culture and history.

Highlights in this year’s programme include concerts from Clannad & Mary Black at Leeds Town Hall (Wed 12th March), new London-based Irish band Crossharbour at Seven Arts, Chapell Allerton (Sat 1st March), and Michael McGoldrick, John Doyle & John McCusker in The Victoria Hall, Saltaire (Fri 7th March).

Look out for Brendan McGowan’s lecture at HEART in Headingley (Friday 8th March) and an Irish Studies MA Seminar Day at Bewley’s Hotel, Leeds, on Saturday 22nd March, featuring Professor Mary Hickman, Dr Ivan Gibbons and Professor Lance Pettitt.

The Irish have contributed to life in Britain in many ways, particularly in the arts.

The launch of the anthology ‘Tangled Roots: True Life Tales About Mixed and Multi-racial Families in Yorkshire’ will take place on Wednesday 5th March at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, 6 - 8pm.

Leeds Literary Prize 2014 Entries for the second biennial prize for unpublished fiction by black and Asian women writers living in the UK will close on 31st March 2014.

The prize was set up by Soroptimist International of Leeds three years ago, and the first awards were made in October 2012 at the Ilkley Literature Festival. The aim

Lotherton Hall has been awarded ÂŁ150,000 by the Department for Culture Media and Sport and Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund to refurbish its exhibition spaces and become the home of the new Fashion Galleries, reinforcing its key ambition to become a major museum of fashion and textiles As part of the planned work, several rooms will be refurbished and a new lift installed so visitors can have full access to the much loved country house as well as the exciting modern exhibition spaces.

The redevelopment will create an up to date 21st century gallery space, with improved lighting and the chance to utilise new elements

like film and sound in the galleries.

When completed, Lotherton Hall will be one of the largest spaces in the north of England to provide a regular programme of fashion and textile exhibitions. The flexibility of the new galleries will allow more of the collection to be displayed and the improved lighting and security mean that Lotherton Hall can borrow pieces from other museum collections.

t’s hard to believe that Headingley LitFest is now in its seventh year! Run entirely by volunteers, once again it has lined up a fantastic programme of events from 10th March – 7th April. These will take place at a variety of venues around Headingley, including HEART, New Headingley Club, Headingley Library, Oxfam, Mint Café, Café Lento, The Bowery, The Chemic, Cottage Road Cinema and Hyde Park Picture House.

The central theme this year is ‘Survival’ – to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI and tie in with the launch of the book based on the true stories connected with the wartime hospital at Beckett Park, compiled

by Richard Wilcocks, Secretary of the LitFest.

Jo Shapcott headlines the festival. Twice winner of the National Poetry Competition, her most recent collection Of Mutability (2010) won the Costa Book Award, and in 2011 she was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry.

Emily Mayhew will talk about her new work, Wounded – From Battlefield to Blighty. This is the first comprehensive account of medical care at the Western Front, and is full of personal stories that are both gripping and moving.

LitFest veterans Trio Literati have put together a tribute to the Victorian poet Tennyson, which they describe as ‘a rich garland’ in ‘Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal’.

Local authors Alison Taft and Sarah Shafi are also here – Alison to talk about her recent crime novel, Shallow Be Thy Grave and Sarah to read from the latest in her Ridiculous Witches series.

New work will also feature in Extraordinary Stories at Café Lento, at the Words on Tap evening at The Chemic, organised by poet Matthew Hedley-Stoppard, and when Leeds Writers read their own material on 17th March.

Of course, older literature has not been neglected: Richard Brown will talk about Rebecca West and literary modernism, and there is an invitation to a Dinner Date with Dante at Salvo’s Salumeria.

Far Headingley Village Society is holding a Literary Scarecrow Festival, in conjunction with the seventh Headingley LitFest in March.

So, if you live within the boundaries of roughly Wood Lane, Otley Road, Glen Road and Meanwood Beck, get your thinking caps on! All scarecrows must have some sort of literary connection (however loose!), e.g. a character (human, animal or scarecrow!) in a book, poem or play. And, your scarecrow should be easily visible from the road.

Byrd, Barbershop and The Beach Boys

The close harmony group The King’s Men (formerly Collegium Regale) will present Byrd, Broadway and the Beach Boys at Leeds Minster on Tuesday 25th March at 7.30pm.

The line-up includes former Minster chorister Toby Ward from Bramhope. Toby was awarded the tenor Choral Scholarship at Gloucester Cathedral before taking up a tenor choral scholarship in the choir of King’s College, Cambridge. The King’s Men, made up of choir members, perform regularly around Britain, and recently as far afield as North America, Australia and Hong Kong.

“It was a concert by The King’s Men at the Minster that inspired me to apply to King’s in the first place”, said Toby. “I hope we can inspire the next generation of the Minster’s young musicians, while delivering an entertaining programme.”

Leeds Festival Chorus, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform the world premiere of ‘Deus noster refugium’ in Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 29th March.

The Chorus commissioned the piece from Scottish composer James MacMillan to mark the centenary year of the start of the Great War. MacMillan specialises in modern sacred music rooted in evocative biblical imagery, but also writes for opera, ballet, musical theatre, and choirs. In this case, he has taken Psalm 46 (God is our refuge and strength) as his inspiration.

“The objective here is to continue the long tradition of marking armed conflicts with concerts of classical music and to provide something really special and significant for the audience”, said Simon Wright, the Chorus’s conductor and artistic adviser.

“The Chorus is also honouring its commitment to the promotion of new music.”

The programme also includes Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music, Haydn’s Symphonie No 44, and Haydn’s Mass in Time of War. Conducted by Simon Wright, the soloists are Mary Bevan (soprano), Jennifer Johnston (mezzo), Robin Tritschler (tenor), and Neal Davies (bass).

On North Lane in Headingley is a little gem of a café, quietly serving up some of the freshest, tastiest food around.

e discovered it a couple of years ago and have returned again and again for their super fresh salads like Tabbouleh, Fatoush and Salatit Adass – teeming with fresh herbs, tomatoes, lentils, lemon juice and olive oil. Or one of their Chef’s Specials with lightly marinated chicken, lamb or prawns – platters that included batata harra, hummus falafel and salad. The vegan selection had stuffed vine leaves and oh-so-tasty baba ghanoush – love that smoked aubergine flavour.

Building on the success of last year’s festival, Left Bank Leeds and Manjit’s Kitchen, an award winning Punjabi street food caterer that has been wowing people in Leeds for over five years, are joining up once more to bring you a flavour of all things street.

This is a celebration of award-winning street food, music, art and bazaar, brought in from the streets of Leeds and beyond!

Eating Leeds!, a twelve month project that has just started, aims to collect a vast amount of information from Loiners to create a cookery blog and book that will benefit both residents and local businesses.

People are being asked to submit their favourite recipes, and tell Eating Leeds all about their favourite places to buy food, and how to use their favourite ingredients.

Recipes will be tried out by the Eating Leeds team, documented and added to the blog, complete with links to the cheapest place in Leeds to find the ingredients, cost per dish and step-by-step instructions for the less common cooking methods. Each person will be credited for their submission and the most popular recipes will be compiled into a book, for release in 2015.

With a team of five, Eating Leeds aims to cover the best of what Leeds has to offer. “We are lucky to have a city full of amazing vegetable shops, spice traders and markets bursting with fresh meat, fish and local produce”, they told us. “We’re looking for recipes, places to shop locally to get the freshest and cheapest foods, and tips for growing your own.

It’s a crowd-sourcing project aimed at gathering knowledge from those who have it and sharing it with those who don’t.”

Stroke Association Calls for Volunteers The Stroke Association is looking for more volunteers to help with fundraising.

A number of roles are available, including supporting fundraising events around Leeds, cheering on participants, setting up and running stands, and registering participants.

But, praise be, at last one comes along that’s interesting enough to warrant reading from cover to cover.

I have had very few complaints about the reasoning behind the new system, but there have been a few problems with missed collections etc.

We learn that the population of Leeds rose over that time by about 50,000 to around 295,000 accompanied by numerous public health problems including infectious diseases and high infant mortality. The lack of sanitation – only 3,221 houses in Leeds had water closets in 1865 – meant refuse disposal and polluted water supplies were major health issues.

In Leeds the annual average reported death rate in 1867-76 from communicable diseases alone (those readily passed on from person to person) was 1,425, with diarrhoea and scarlet fever accounting for over half that total.

Fast forward to the 21st century and by 2011 the equivalent ten year annual average was under 400 deaths from communicable diseases of which 87% were from

pneumonia often associated with excess Winter deaths. All but eliminated as causes of death are the likes of smallpox, scarlet fever and whooping cough. In their place come C.Diff, now accounting for an average of 25 deaths a year, septicaemia with just under 20, and HIV and MRSA with around two apiece.

Certainly things have improved over the years, but the need for constant vigilance remains, with measles being a case in point. With so many busy and hazardous roads around Leeds, safety is paramount. I believe that education is key and all road users need to be considerate of one another. Now is the perfect time for both local and national Government to take a serious look at what can be done. It makes sense to capitalise on the great successes of the Olympic cycling team, Bradley Wiggins in the Tour de France, and Chris Froome’s win last year, Leeds Children’s Mayor,

Charlotte Williams from Rufford Park Primary in Yeadon, has a marvellous manifesto which focuses on cycling. She wants to create a borrow-a-bike scheme and increase the number of cycling paths to schools in the hope that these measures will encourage more children to cycle.

As Co Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Tour de France, I have been actively campaigning to improve cycling facilities in North West Leeds by meeting with Leeds City Council, British Cycling, and Ministers to try and bring about improvements in safety and education. This is a long running project and I will continue to pursue it until we have access to a complete network of safe cycle paths and lanes, as well as competitive sporting facilities. Hopefully the Tour de France will leave a lasting legacy here in Leeds and make our area even more cycling friendly.

Outreach Project Chalks Up Successful First Year

The Community Outreach Project, an offshoot of the Kidz in Kampz Community Charity Shop in Holt Park, recently celebrated its first year of operation.

Working in partnership with Housing Leeds, the project identifies new and vulnerable tenants moving onto the Holtdale Estate and through a referral process provides them with the items that they may need to set up home. These range from small furniture items, bedding and curtains, to cutlery and crockery – anything that will help to make the transition easier.

The project is run entirely by volunteers who will visit new tenants, check their needs, and collect the items together for them.

In the last year they have helped many people. They will also help existing tenants who are referred to them by Housing Leeds, who may have fallen on hard times and

The Forum has started a formal engagement with the Adel Community through a survey of housing and land development issues. The top five reasons why people moved to Adel were identified as: peace and quiet, the quality of the environment, character of the area, green space and easy access to the city centre. These could all be threatened if the proposed developments take place and Leeds City Council and developers do not take these issues into account in their plans.

Other valued aspects included the type of housing, good bus and

road links, the sense of community, its heritage and listed buildings, education and health facilities, and its low crime levels.

The volume of traffic is consistently identified as a key issue with 84% of respondents, raising concerns on road safety. Interestingly, 49% said they would use a bus service that enabled them to get across to the other side of Adel to reach local schools, shops and health services.

Additional services and facilities that people mentioned were more identified walks, a nature trail, and a trim trail. There was also strong support for better cycle access.

A ‘facility for young people’ and ‘children’s play playground’ also featured near the top of the list.

These have consistently been identified over the years and both were included in the earlier Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement and in meetings held by the Adel Association.

The survey showed that over 50% of respondents had lived in Adel for over 20 years, and 75% for

over ten - all evidence of a settled and established community. This is borne out by the fact that the largest age group in the sample was in 45-59 age range (25%), with 51% over 60.

A farmers’ market, community centre and University of the Third Age are proposals that would bring added value to the area and are noted for future consideration.

One hundred fish and chip shops across the country recently smashed the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) ‘Chip in for Charity’ fundraising target of £10,000 for the Fishermen’s Mission.

The fundraising took place on a single day, commemorating the NFFF’s official 100th anniversary on 11th November 2013. When the NFFF asked if the shops would like to raise £100 each, the response was overwhelming.

The NFFF itself raised funds by cooking over 100 portions of fish and chips for local pensioners at their head office training school in Meanwood.

The Tour de France will pass through Yorkshire in early July and there are plans to cover the county with yellow flowers. Here are my top three easy to grow suggestions of what to plant: Nasturtiums offer a range of fabulous yellow flowers from zesty ‘St Clements’ to the cool lemon of ‘Milkmaid’ and many varieties will trail or climb so they make excellent subjects for hanging baskets and containers.

The flowers are edible too and make a glamorous addition to salads.

Pot marigolds (Calendula) are quick to grow into bushy upright plants covered in orange or yellow daisy-like flowers.

They too have edible flowers and make excellent companion plants for the vegetable plot as well as looking vibrant and sunny in flowerbeds and pots.

Poached Egg Plants (Limnanthes) are low growing with delicate fern like foliage smothered with white edged yellow flowers.

All three of these can be sown directly outside towards the end of the month when the soil has warmed up or started off in trays or pots on a cool windowsill. They should all be looking beautiful in time for the race.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON One of the most colourful ducks, now resplendent in breeding plumage, is the Shoveler. It is medium-large with an outsized broad, shovellike bill which gives a frontheavy look. The male has a dark green head and chestnut flanks with a gleaming white breast. By contrast, the female is brown like a Mallard duck but is readily distinguished by the huge bill.

Shovelers prefer shallow lakes, reservoirs, inland marshes and sheltered estuaries in Winter, and nesting on reedy lakes and pools in Summer.

“It’s incredible to have shot an Oscar-nominated short”, said Phil, who graduated from the Northern Film School in 2005. “I was filming when the nominations were announced and

“I have very fond memories of my time at the Northern Film School. Looking back it was the ideal springboard for a career in Cinematography. The real plus point was not only that I left with the knowledge and skills of my craft, but that I also had a very

The film, based on an excerpt from the novel Number9dream by David Mitchell, portrays Voorman (Hollander) as a prisoner who believes he’s a god. Psychiatrist, Dr Williams (Martin Freeman), is called in to examine the patient, who has managed to convince the other prisoners that he’s telling the truth.

The film has had 24 official selections at film festivals around the world so far and has won Best Live Action Short at the St Louis International Short Film Festival and Best Screenplay at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival. It has also been nominated for a BAFTA in the short film category.

Set in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60s, the Coen Brother’s latest focuses on a fictional singer-songwriter based somewhat on Dave Van Ronk.

Oscar Issac, in an attention grabbing, breakthrough role, plays the titular Llewyn Davis. As quietly assured of his artistic worth as he is disdainful of others who fail to meet his criteria for music worthy of respect, he doggedly pursues his musical ambitions facing disappointment and discouragement at every turn.

A rootless drifter, down on his luck and out of pocket, Llewyn couch-surfs his way around those willing to tolerate him and seems unwilling or unable to make things any easier for himself. You suspect his refusal to compromise his integrity one iota means the greatest impediment to his success is of his own making.

The film, like the character of Davis himself is somewhat aimless and meandering.

Striking out on his own as a solo act after the abrupt and untimely end of his previous musical partnership, he becomes

It’s difficult to get on side with Llewyn and yet, when he picks up a guitar and begins to sing he just about redeems himself and comes close to convincing you that his self

The soundtrack, particularly the captivating live performance sequences, is excellent due to regular Coens collaborator, T-Bone Burnett (whom Oscar Issac has described as a ‘genius’ and ‘musical revolutionary’) on board as producer.

The film, in both sight and sound, is an exquisitely handsome production, awash with nostalgia and melancholy, beautifully rendered by cinematographer, Bruno Delbonnel’s hazy focus and colour palette of muted greys, soft browns and blue.

More of a mood piece than a narrative driven feature, Inside Llewyn Davis offers a glimpse

into the life of the character without tidy resolution or the redemptive clichés another ‘struggling artist’ movie may have opted for. We wonder if it’s a question of bad timing for Llewyn, operating in a musical niche that will soon explode globally with the arrival of the young Bob Dylan, or if maybe, he just doesn’t have what it takes.

He seems trapped in a cycle of self-sabotage, doomed to toil forever in obscurity.

One could argue that, like the musical career of Llewyn Davis, the film doesn’t really go anywhere and perhaps that’s the point.

Whatever the case, I found it a trip well worth taking and can see it becoming one of my favourite Coen Brothers’ films.

Egokiller Release 52 Singles for Homeless Charities!

Local Jam-Band, Funk-Rock outfit and groove merchants, Egokiller are currently knee deep in an ambitious and impressive project. Last July they set themselves the challenge of releasing a single every week for a year to raise money for homeless charities Crisis, The Big Issue North and Shelter.

It’s a timely cause as the strain of the economic downturn, combined with radical welfare cuts and growing housing market pressures mean increasing numbers of people are becoming homeless, with families and younger people being the hardest hit. Members of the band have personally struggled with homelessness or know someone who has so they decided to campaign and contribute in the best way they know how - through music.

By releasing a single weekly on themes as broad as love, immigration, health and of course homelessness itself, the potential to gain people’s attention and support is huge. It is also a fun way to contribute.

For a little bit of money people get some great music and know their money is going to help people who need it.

The Egokiller sound is freeform and improvisational but grounded in solid hooks and tight grooves. The material for the singles takes shape on the fly in the studio and, as the band is currently without a full time drummer, there’s often a little shake up with the personnel.

Knowing the players involved (Jonny Firth and Rosie Doonan are both fine solo performers in their own right) I had good reason to assume they’d be well worth checking out.

So, this particularly wet and miserable Tuesday night, having attended the launch and line-up announcement for Live at Leeds (looking very good, as it goes), I squeezed into a packedto-capacity Oporto and was treated to an electrifying set that exceeded my already high expectations.

Describing themselves as The Black Keys meets Nancy Sinatra, CryBabyCry are a powerful three-piece whose tightly arranged tunes take in influences from the best of classic American music - Blues, Southern Rock, Gospel, Country, shades of Motown Soul - and are presented with a decidedly matter of fact, down to business Yorkshire attitude.

Firth and Doonan share co-front person duties and instruments are swapped to and fro - both of them being equally at home on guitar and bass. They are backed on drums by the formidable Nici Todd, a fine-tuned percussive engine who is the very definition of ‘rock solid’, diligently pounding it out with never a beat, fill or cymbal clash out of place.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the trio who display an easy confidence on stage

with intense chemistry and instrumental fluency. The lead and backing vocals of Doonan and Firth are perfectly complimentary and share the grit and brassy gutsiness that suits their Bluessoaked material.

Those lucky enough to be in attendance went away with a limited edition three track CD included in the price of admission.

And a very fine recording it is too, comprising of a trio of the set’s many highlights; the solid groove of the riff-driven Go Go with its stomping chorus, the slinky, sultry, bass-heavy The Tramp and the twangy, countrified soul of Lovely Bones. Extremely limited numbers of this debut EP, which offers a tantalizingly teasing taste of the album to come, are available at Jumbo and Crash record stores in the city centre. I advise you snap one up while you can.

CryBabyCry aren’t looking to break new musical ground, nor are they interested in reinventing the wheel, but they sure as hell know what a classic tune sounds and feels like. In this regard they play to their considerable strengths, the vocals, rhythm and fretwork are all faultlessly top flight stuff.

A band with an abundance of infectious riffs and hooks and oodles of charisma, CryBabyCry are a captivating and thrilling live act and deserving of every success.

MIK ARTISTIK’S EGO TRIP The gig was meant to start at 9pm so we headed down to The Grove Pub in plenty of time, getting there at 8.30pm. Not only was Mik singing away already, we couldn’t even get into the room! That says something about this subversive, unique entertainer. Amidst many dirty looks and harshly hissed orders to ‘MOVE’ we pushed our way in and held our ground.

This was my first Mik Artistik experience and is unlikely to be my last. Backed by the excellent Benson J Walker on bass and Jonny Flockton on lead guitar, they ripped through songs like ‘Rex’ (about a stray dog that had adopted him then virtually caused a custody battle when his relationship broke up), ‘Turning into Dad’, and ‘Cards on the Street’ –about being ignored by the young as they handed out club flyers on Briggate!

Mik has a huge following, which includes people like Keith Allen, Johnny Vegas and John Cooper Clarke Man’. People were joining in, and a large contingency from Batley was in fine voice.

Mik describes what he does as Rock and Roll Stand Up, a friend called it ‘comedically poignant’, which is a good description. Like a lot of the best stand up, Mik’s material is inclusive and relatable and could accurately be called ‘tragi-comic’. The songs may be deeply sad, yet at the same time gut-bustingly hilarious.

Yorkshire is Best Cycling Destination in the World!

The Tour de France may still be months away but it’s all kicking off in Yorkshire already!

No one will be able to say that Yorkshire didn’t take advantage of the Tour de France spotlight. At the end of January Welcome to Yorkshire launched its Yorkshire Cultural Festival with a fantastic programme of events lined up across the county. And the Festival of Cycling at Harewood House is turning the Tour weekend into a massive party and celebration of cycling.

According to Olympic silver medal cyclist, Lizzie Armitstead, ambassador for the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling at Harewood House, Yorkshire is the best cycling destination in the world!

Of course, Stage 1 of Le Grand Depart passes right through her home town, Otley, on 5th July on its way to Harrogate. She will be celebrating the occasion at Harewood.

“There’s such a buzz about cycling in Yorkshire at the moment”, said Lizzie. “As a county we’ve produced some of the best cyclists in the world and we’re very proud of our cycling history.

For me, this is the best cycling destination in the world; the scenery’s beautiful and the terrain is tough, relentless even, but it’s training in these conditions that makes Yorkshire’s cyclists such strong competitors.

“I’m really looking forward to being a spectator for once and enjoying the race with my family and friends. We’ll be getting together at the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling to take part in as many events as we can, from the time trials and family rides to the mountain biking. There’ll be so much going on all weekend, I’m even planning to try a bit of glamping!”

The three-day event will be a celebration of all things cycling; ticket-holders can camp in Harewood’s historic grounds, see the Tour first hand as the peloton races up the front drive and past the house, and then watch the action live on big screens.

People will be able to follow in the riders’ tracks on organised rides and take part in a host of other cycling and running events. A Shopping Expo and plenty of music and cycling-related entertainment - including a thousand-seat Cycle Cinema and talks from the UK’s favourite cycling authors – are just a few of the attractions that will keep visitors entertained off their bikes.

There’s such a buzz about cycling in Yorkshire at the moment

The Yorkshire Cultural Festival, the brainchild of Welcome to Yorkshire, has commissioned 47 projects to be part of the 100-day festival - which will include hundreds of fringe events.

Highlights include sculptor Thomas Houseago, who is creating two giant sculptures for Leeds City Centre and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. West Yorkshire Playhouse will host ‘Beryl’, written by actress Maxine Peake, to celebrate the extraordinary sporting achievements of Morley cyclist Beryl Burton.

And, award-winning director Daisy Asquith teams up with musician Bill Nelson to create a film that will be shown on outdoor screens in locations across Yorkshire.

rural roads around Otley, doing distances ranging from ten to 30 miles, at an easy pace. They are committed to their mantras ‘any bike will do’, ‘nobody is ever left behind’, and ‘we will get off and walk up hills where needed’!

In 2012 a couple of hardy souls from Otley Cycle Club noticed a gap in the club cycling experience where, if you were not super-fit and able to cycle for long distances, you would be left behind. So they embarked on a plan to do something about it.

They learnt quickly how to use social media and soon lots of people were turning up - the group grew from just three to 30 plus in just one year!

The cycle club is particularly focused on getting more women on to bikes and over 40% of the cyclists now joining are female. They go for rides in small groups on quiet

Friendly, enthusiastic volunteers are committed to getting more people out on their bikes, regardless of age or ability, to enjoy the benefits of exercise, the countryside, good company and the improved health that cycling brings. Sustrans Joins NVA and Phoenix to Create Ghost Peleton As part of the Yorkshire Festival, Sustrans has joined up with Scottish public arts charity NVA and Phoenix Dance to create ‘Ghost Peleton’, an exciting participatory artwork incorporating a team of 50 road racers, stunt cyclists and largescale projection of dancers all using remote controlled light suits to produce stunning live choreography. Following the success of NVA’s ‘Speed of Light’, which choreographed massed runners in sites as diverse as Edinburgh and Yokohama Docks, Leeds and Yorkshire are the new canvas for light in motion using cycling. It is busy developing the National Cycle Network across Leeds and working in schools, communities, workplaces and universities to unlock the region’s potential for sustainable transport. Its aim is to make it practical for people to travel on foot, bike or public transport for 80% of their journeys by 2020 – the norm in many northern European cities, whilst here we’re currently at just 40%.

“2014 is an exciting year”, said Paul Osborne, Programme Manager Smarter Choices, Sustrans. “Not only will we see the start date for City Connect; a Dutch Style cycle route from Leeds to Bradford City Centre, but we’ll also be waving off the world’s best cyclists on the Grand Depart and opening the 1000th mile of National Cycle Network in Yorkshire.”

A Cycling Vision for Leeds!

Ask for a vision of future transport and you might think of hoverboards, electric cars or personal flying machines. But Leeds Cycling Campaign is proposing the humble bicycle as a key part of the future of transport in Leeds. ‘Cycling: a Vision for Leeds’ sets the scene 30 years from now, with the city transformed into a cycle-friendly environment where everyone feels safe and confident on two wheels.

Steps towards this vision are starting to be made, thanks to new Cycle City funding announced last year. The canal towpath between Kirkstall and Shipley will be upgraded, and a revolutionary new cycle route will be constructed between East Leeds and Bradford. But the Campaign wants to see transformation throughout the city, to make cycling and walking the natural choices for short journeys.

The Vision for Leeds suggests improvements such as better links with public transport, considerate behaviour from all road users, and safer and calmer streetscapes. A key suggestion is for Leeds to adopt ‘Cyclovia’, an idea that many cities worldwide have embraced as a regular event.

Cyclovia began in Bogotá, Columbia, with certain main streets freed from motorised traffic to provide safe space for walkers and cyclists.

Now every Sunday morning, over 70 miles of traffic-free streets in Bogotá are enjoyed by up to two million walkers, cyclists, and skaters.

Free aerobics and dance classes, yoga and street musicians turn the event into a free street festival for all ages.

Cyclovia is now a fixture in cities worldwide, including Ottawa, Mexico City, and Rio de Janeiro. City governments have found it to be an effective and cheap way to boost healthy activity, economic development and create community cohesion. It could be the first step in changing the way we think about our city and how we get around it.

Leeds Midnight Walk The eighth annual, ladies only, Leeds Midnight Walk, in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice, takes place on Saturday 17th May. The seven or ten mile circular walk around Kirkstall, Horsforth and West Park is along well lit streets, starting and finishing at the Xercise 4 Less Gym on Kirkstall Road.

Once registered, each walker will receive a fundraising pack full of information, as well as a stylish T-shirt.

Paralympian swimmer and silver medallist, Claire Cashmore, recently visited the Froebelian School in Horsforth to receive a cheque for an amazing £5,000, which the children had raised for the school’s chosen charity, The Paralympics Association.

The Thackray Medical Museum recently unveiled its latest family exhibition ‘Skeleton Science’, which is on loan from Durham University Museums.

The exhibition draws on the work of bio-archaeologists and how they can tell us more about our ancient past by looking at skeletal remains. The life of a skeleton can be traced in the laboratory, exploring disease, injury, family relationships and incredible journeys.

As part of the display, you will come face-to-face with an ancient skeleton and discover how this cutting-edge science is helping to solve some of the greatest archaeological and medical mysteries. This interactive exhibition is perfect for budding archaeologists.

“This is an exciting year for us as we are opening two brand new exhibitions”, said Lauren RyallStockton, Curator. “In addition

to ‘Skeleton Science’, July sees the opening of ‘Recovery? From Flanders to Afghanistan’, an exhibition commemorating the centenary of WWI. Both of these exhibitions draw together elements of the past, as well as cutting edge science and medicine.”

‘Skeleton Science’ runs until January 2015 and will be the focal point for a series of events planned throughout the year, including the return of the popular heart dissection activity.

Children will become scientists as they find out how the heart works, what an important role it has in the body and why it is important to look after it.

Little Hiccups Lines Up the Challenges!

Little Hiccups, a Leeds charity that supports families of children with disabilities, has set itself a fundraising target of £15,000 for this year.

To achieve this is has recruited a team of over 60 who will set out to conquer some of the toughest challenges in the North in 2014.

These include the Major Series, Tough Mudder, Electric Run, Spartan Race, Colour Run, Leeds 10K and Half Marathon, and Yorkshire Triathlon and Warrior events.

The aim is to raise enough money to buy two specialist, all-terrain wheelchair buggies that families can borrow. These wheelchairs are amazing! With one of these children will be able to experience the beach, parkland and forest. The buggies also attach to a bike as a trailer, convert into

Appen Creations designed their website. And, Wendy Potter Photography will be photographing the events throughout the year – all at no cost to the charity.

About 20 of the team recently turned up for their first training session at the Armley Park 161 Killer Stairs. The weather was horrific but they thoroughly enjoyed the stair running, jumping in puddles and preparing for the challenges ahead.

Ireland Wood Literacy Success Children at Ireland Wood Primary School are buzzing from the success of two recent Literacy competitions. The vast majority of pupils in Year 5 and 6 now have published work!

“We continually work to raise the profile of writing across the school and enhance our literacy curriculum”, said Gemma Midwood, Literacy Coordinator. “We use competitions, websites and visits from published authors to inspire the children.’’

The school’s latest success was in winning the ‘Worldwide Winter Writing Competition’, run by Lend me your Literacy and Heather Potter in Year 6 was announced as the overall winner.

The competition was inundated with entries and choosing a winner was nigh on impossible! The judges said that Heather’s piece was beautifully thought-out and written. She will receive a book bundle and the pride of knowing that she is now a published author with a worldwide audience!

Children’s author Tom Palmer visited Ireland Wood recently and shared some of his writing with the school. “It’s brilliant that Ireland Wood took part in Lend me your Literacy – it’s a great way to get children writing”, he said.

Year 5 and 6 also took part in a ‘Monster poetry competition’ organised by the website Young Writers. The judges were so overwhelmed by all the entries, they decided to publish them in a special anthology. The children are so proud!

Moorlands New Headmaster Returns to his Roots Founded in 1897 Moorlands is the oldest prep school in Leeds and is proud of its Yorkshire Heritage – as is its new headmaster, Martin McElhone, who returns to his roots in Leeds after teaching in London, New York and Dubai.
