INTRODUCTION Welcome to Trigg Sports Arena for the first games of the 2021 season. Our women are playing their first ever Kate Sheppard Cup game today, it will be interesting to see how they go against Onehunga Mangere Utd who are something of an unknown quantity. ‘The Mountaineers’ are in a lower division to the girls in blue, but that does not mean we can underestimate them and they will be planning an upset I am sure.

We are so excited to be hosting cup football at our ground, it is something of a rarity for Northland teams due to complexities in rules surrounding both the Chatham Cup and Kate Sheppard Cup competitions, whose rules do not allow for composite clubs to enter if one of their members does so- this is why in the men’s edition you see Kerikeri FC in the preliminary round every year, but never Northland FC (and seldom any Northland teams) in round one proper.

The magic of the cup is not to be underestimated, and we are excited to see how far into the competition our women can go. Enjoy the games today, it will be great to see the 17th grade boys hosting Northern Rovers in the curtain raiser at 11.30am too, make some noise and get behind the teams!

COYB NORTHLAND FC V ONEHUNGA MANGERE UNITED HISTORY This is a fixture we normally associate with the men’s teams, who have played each other numerous times in the Lotto NRFL, but this is the first time our women have met each other in competition.

Whatever the outcome, we welcome Onehunga Mangere United to Whangarei for today’s game and hope that the football on offer is entertaining showcasing women’s football in the region.

COYB MANUKAU UNITED VS. NORTHLAND FC April saw a bit of disruption to the women’s squad with Bee departing the hot seat after eighteen months in charge to pursue a playing career in Australia with Southern United.

Georgia Witt-Green has stepped up as an interim player-coach, assisted by Pranav Singh (asst.

Coach) and Maree Wright (Team Manager), and is leading the girls in blue until we find a replacement.

Following a 3-2 loss away to West Auckland in a game that was marred by injury to Te Waiariki Read, the need to bounce back against Manukau United was great and they did so in style, winning 4-1.

Goals from Gabi Hislop, Zoee Hoy, Georgia Witt-Green and Keisha Parker helped get us back on track and in touch with the teams at the top of the NRF Women’s Championship- after the Kate Sheppard Cup this weekend we will face one of our toughest test this year when we travel to West Coast Rangers who are pushing for promotion to the Lotto NRFL.

COYB 11 PRE MATCH PREVIEW - A WORD FROM THE GAFFER Welcome to Onehunga Mangere Utd who have travelled up for the game. I am proud to be leading Northland into the Kate Sheppard Cup for the first time today, there is nothing quite like knockout football and we want to go as far as we can in the competition.

The last few weeks have been challenging for the squad but we are coming through the other side now and I would like to thank the women’s teams at our member clubs who have come together to support us, all while competing for the Northland Championship- it really demonstrates what this club is about.

We had a good run out against Manukau Utd last week and the girls know that the same effort is required of them today. The players who came through the youth program a couple of years ago are really stepping up and it is good to see the next crop nearly ready for senior football.

Enjoy the game and thank you for coming out to support us- it really means a lot to the squad!

COYB 13 PLAYER PROFILE - ABBY WRIGHT Age: 17 Club: Bream Bay United Abby is a product of our youth system and is now into her third year representing the senior women.

Comfortable on the wing, up front or as a number ten, Abby has become an integral part of the women’s squad and is a senior player despite her young age.

Away from the team, Abby is also assistant coach of our 16th Grade Girls NRFL team, is a talented swimmer and has represented the NFF at NAGT, winning the 16th Grade Girls competition in 2019.

A player with huge potential, keep an eye out for her in front of goal today!

COACH PROFILE - CHRIS WEST Age: 47 Club: Kerikeri FC ‘Westy’ has been involved at Northland FC and the NFF as a coach in Northland for nearly a decade.

Based in the Far North, he has a passion for the game that few can match and is 100% committed to the cause.

In 2021, he is the head coach of our 16th Grade Girls NRFL squad and has recently attained his OFC/NZF C Licence accreditation. His daughter Amber and son Kristan both represent the club in the youth program.

Westy had to wait a bit longer for his debut thoughhe was in the sticks for the first team in preseason, making his bow at the tender age of 47!

16 COYB NORTHLAND FC YOUTH UPDATE We’re well underway with the 2021 youth season, which another year of growth for us as a club- we now have seven youth teams competing every weekend; 14th and 16th Grade Girls on Saturday, 2 x 13th Grade Boys teams (one in the NRFL, one in the NRF Championship), 14th, 15th and 17th Grade Boys.

While it is undoubtedly a challenge to juggle training schedules, logistics around travel to training/games and securing matchday venues (just the six home games today in Whangarei for example!), it is one that all the staff and players have risen to.

We are one of a handful of clubs with representation in every NRFL Youth league, which is open to NRF and WaiBOP clubs, and has replaced the old AFF/NFF Metro competition. This is a great source of pride for us as a club and demonstrates our commitment to developing players in the Northland region.

The leagues our players compete in are among the best youth leagues in New Zealand- All Whites and Football Ferns of the future are here, and it is important that we are able to provide a quality player development program for all involved. For the first time in the history of our club, all head coaches hold the relevant OFC/NZF C Licence qualification and all assistant coaches are qualified to NZF Youth Level 2.

There have been a few stand out results so far this season, with the 13th Grade Boys NRF Championship squad currently undefeated and top of the league (there is a long way to go though!), and the 14th Grade Girls toppling Northern Rovers in the NRFL Youth.

On an individual level, William Gross bagged a sublime 4 minute hat trick on the opening day of the season and Neo Eckstein from the 17th Grade Boys has taken his chances at senior level, making his first team debut and assisting the winner against Cambridge in the Lotto NRFL Division Two. The followers of these teams have taken some incredible photos of the teams, and we are grateful for all their support in getting players to games, providing photos & videos and putting on after match food for the visiting teams. We publish fixtures every week on our club Facebook page, so make sure you head along there to see what the boys and girls are up to on a weekly basis.

Based on the opening weeks of the season, the future of our club is very bright, and we look forward to the rest of the 2021 season to see how far these players can go.
