Michie calls for recount By Denny Scott The Citizen
Trick-or-treat As part of outreach for the homes, both Huronview in Clinton and Huronlea Home for the Aged in Brussels hosted special Halloween events on Sunday, Oct. 30 to allow for area youth to connect with their grandparents

McNeil to seek second warden’s term By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen On Wednesday morning, Huron County Warden and AshfieldColborne-Wawanosh (ACW) Mayor Glen McNeil announced that he will be seeking a second two-year term as the county’s top politician. McNeil, who was acclaimed to
another four-year term as ACW mayor this year, was first elected to the county position in the winter of 2020. He defeated South Huron Mayor George Finch to earn the position. At Wednesday morning’s Huron County Council meeting, McNeil said he had consulted with his family and members of council and decided that the time was right to
seek another term, especially with new councillors coming in as a result of last month’s election. In addition, he was acclaimed as the vice-chair of the Western Ontario Wardens’ Caucus last February, so he wanted to see out his involvement with that regional organization as well. In fact, just days earlier, McNeil addressed a federal commission on behalf of the
caucus, representing over 1.5 million residents, regarding proposed boundary adjustments that would affect Huron County, removing Howick from the local riding. Thus far, McNeil is the only representative to put his name forward for the position. The election will take place later this year.
Chris Michie, who was beaten by a single vote in the race to become a Morris-Turnberry Councillor, has officially requested a recount of the 2022 municipal election, which council decided to grant him. During council’s Nov. 1 meeting, the last of the 2018-2022 term, Chief Administrative Officer Trevor Hallam detailed Michie’s request, explaining how it would occur. With an online/phone voting system, there wouldn’t be physical ballots to recount, however SimplyVoting, the company that provides the service, would “lock” the current outcome and then resend the raw voter information to Morris-Turnberry, where it would be digitally tabulated. Those new results would then be compared with the first results, Hallam said. Council approved the request, as recommended by staff, with Deputy-Reeve Sharen Zinn saying it makes sense with the margin of victory being just one vote. The recount will be held on Nov. 9 and, while candidates aren’t required to attend, they are welcome. Currently, all of council, including Mayor Jamie Heffer, Deputy-Mayor Sharen Zinn and Councillor Kevin Freiburger and Jamie McCallum, are set to return, alongside newcomer Jodi Snell, who would fill the vacancy left by former Councillor Jim Nelemans, who resigned earlier this year. Snell beat Michie by a single vote in the election.
