C. Huron to retain its wards By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen

Remembering in 2020 Branches of the Royal Canadian Legion marked Remembrance Day last week, but it will be a year many members will never forget due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the guidance of Huron Perth Public Health, Legions

were advised to hold closed-to-the-public ceremonies and stream them online. Above, Brussels Legion President Jamie Mitchell laid one of the few wreaths at the ceremony, with most being set up before the ceremony began. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Despite directing staff to investigate dissolution of the ward system at its last meeting, Central Huron Council has called off that project, opting to retain the ward system through the 2022 municipal election. Council discussed the issue on Monday night, debating Clerk Kerri Ann O’Rourke’s report on the matter. Several councillors said they had spoken to ratepayers on the issue since the last meeting and they felt the ward system should remain intact. Councillor Marg Anderson said, using an issue discussed earlier in the evening regarding a dispute near the lakeshore as an example, it was essential to have representatives from throughout the municipality to know the issues. Furthermore, she said, in municipal elections people vote for the people they know and if everyone comes from one community, that could be lost. Deputy-Mayor Dave Jewitt shared similar concerns, saying that if a special interest group wanted to take over council and have a handful of members run, regardless of where they live, that could be problematic as well. Councillors didn’t engage in too much conversation on the issue before directing staff to end its research and leave things the way they are. Council passed a motion to that effect.

Over 70 active COVID-19 cases in Huron-Perth By Denny Scott The Citizen Huron and Perth Counties have 45 more cases of COVID-19 than last Monday, and while many of them are related to an outbreak at Stratford’s Cedarcroft Place retirement home, there are a number of community cases as well. As of Monday, Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) reported there have been 248 confirmed cases of

COVID-19 in the two counties since the pandemic began in March, with 72 cases considered active. With eight deaths now reported at Cedarcroft Place, there have been a total of 13 deaths in Huron and Perth Counties. HPPH reports that, currently, there are two outbreaks at local care facilities: Cedarcroft Place retirement home and Knollcrest Lodge in Perth East where one staff member tested positive for the virus.

While there have been no outbreaks at local schools, Shakespeare Public School and Milverton Public School have both had confirmed cases, according to Huron Perth Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen. On Monday, Klassen said that of the 72 active cases in Huron and Perth, many are tied to the Cedarcroft Place retirement home, but there are also currently 17 active cases in Perth East, she said. There

have also been several hospitalizations. Klassen also reported that Huron and Perth Counties are now in the Yellow level of the province’s COVID-19 Response Framework, which includes strengthened powers for the HPPH and other bodies. Klassen also issued recommendations for long-term care homes and retirement homes to cease all indoor visits at the facility, limiting to “essential” visitors, and

to cease permitting residents to leave facilities except for healthcare reasons. As far as local numbers are concerned, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Huron County haven’t changed significantly. Bluewater has now had the most confirmed cases in the area with 15 since the pandemic began. Central Huron has remained at 14 confirmed cases, South Huron has increased to Continued on page 10
