Cases steadily decline in H-P By Denny Scott The Citizen

Making progress The Blyth Festival is hoping to host a truncated and modified season later this year, thanks to an innovative outdoor stage, designed by Jason Morgan at Allan Avis Architects at the Blyth Campground in the natural amphitheatre near the Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail. Work began just a few weeks ago, but distinct progress

has already been made. Artistic Director Gil Garratt says that while the stage will offer a safe alternative for theatre in the era of COVID-19, he hopes to make it a permanent aspect of the Festival season moving forward, hosting shows in Memorial Hall, the Phillips Studio and the outdoor theatre space. Thompson ‘humbled’ as ag. minister Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson has been named the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, as part of Premier Doug Ford’s most recent cabinet shuffle. This is the third cabinet position Thompson has held since the 2018 election. First she was named the Minister of Education before she was reassigned in 2019 to the position of Minister of Government and Consumer Services. In an e-mail to the media, Thompson said she was proud and honoured to serve as the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “I am humbled to be given this new post and I pledge to Ontario’s agri-food sector and rural communities that I will work hard on their behalf,” Thompson said. “I’d like to also applaud and acknowledge the great work done by Ernie Hardeman over the years as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.” Thompson has represented Huron and Bruce Counties at Queen’s Park for 10 years, having first been

elected in the 2011 election, ousting long-time incumbent Liberal Carol Mitchell. She was re-elected in 2014 and served in many critic positions over the course of those two terms while her party was the official opposition. In 2018, after party leader Patrick Brown stepped down and was replaced by Vic Fedeli, Thompson served briefly as the party’s new caucus chair. Prior to entering the world of provincial politics, Thompson, a native of the Wingham area, served as the general manager of the Ontario Dairy Goat Co-operative and as a rural community advisor for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. In her statement, Thompson said she had been overwhelmed by positive comments and well wishes from throughout the province. “I appreciate everyone’s kind words and congratulations. I am honoured to take on the responsibility of Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. I look forward to working

side-by-side with Ontario’s farmers, commodity organizations, processing sector and our rural communities.” Thompson could not be reached

by The Citizen on Monday for an interview, but see future issues for an interview with the new Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) announced that large shipments of the Moderna COVID19 vaccine are set to come to Huron and Perth Counties, helping to fasttrack full vaccination. The announcement, which was made by Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen during an HPPH teleconference, will allow continued first doses for anyone over the age of 18, as the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine hasn’t been approved for youth under the age of 18. She said it will also allow for continued second doses, as mixing of the Moderna vaccine with other pharmaceutical companies’ vaccines has proven effective. Klassen, during a teleconference last week, also said that, to aid in the ongoing problem of vaccination appointments not being used, a new feature to cancel appointments more easily was added to the HPPH website. The announcements came as Huron and Perth Counties continued on a downward trend for COVID-19 infections, including reduced new case counts, reduced variant of concern case counts and reduced active case counts. Across the two counties, 1,876 cumulative cases have been reported since the pandemic began, up 14 from last week’s 1,862. New cases in Huron County Continued on page 2

‘Citizen’ nominees wanted The time has come to once again nominate someone for North Huron Publishing’s annual Citizen of the Year Awards, recognizing outstanding volunteers from Blyth and Brussels and their surrounding communities. Nominations are now open and will close at the end of the day on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021. You can nominate someone from your community using the nomination form found on page 11 of this issue or by e-mailing Editor Shawn Loughlin at editor@ northhuron.on.ca. Please include your nominee’s name and brief comments as to why that person should be the Citizen of the Year, as well as your own name and contact information.

The Citizen has been handing out the awards, which celebrate volunteerism and community spirit, since 1985, the year The Citizen was founded. The reigning Citizen of the Year winners are Annie Sparling for the Blyth area and the late Bob Kellington for the Brussels area, who was recognized posthumously. The Citizen encourages residents and readers to nominate someone who has made a difference in the community and with this year going as it has, there are plenty of people who have stepped up and helped their neighbours and friends. The annual Citizen of the Year Award winners are chosen from among reader nominations. Readers nominate residents who make a difference in their communities.

Those nominations are then considered by a panel of past Citizen of the Year Award winners, who then choose the year’s winner. North Huron Publishing Inc. and The Citizen are proud to present this award annually, celebrating volunteerism and community commitment in the Blyth and Brussels communities. Past winners of the award in the Brussels area are: Cal Krauter, 1985; Wayne Lowe, 1986; Jack Bryans, 1987; Ida Evans, 1989; Bessie Johnston, 1990; Betty Graber, 1991; George Langlois, 1992; Howard Bernard, 1993; Joanne King, 1994; Frank Thompson, 1995; Audrey Cardiff, 1996; Leona Armstrong, 1997; Neil McGavin, 1998; Beth Continued on page 3
