Thompson shuffled again in cabinet By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen
An annual tradition The Blyth Legion and Legion Ladies Auxiliary held its annual decoration service at Blyth Union Cemetery on Sunday to honour those who had passed away over the course of the year and those who are laid to rest there.
The Legion members were piped into the cemetery by Blyth Festival Artistic Director Gil Garratt, who has served as the Branch’s bagpipe player for a number of years now, keeping the music alive for the annual ceremony. (John Stephenson photo)
Premier Doug Ford has once again shuffled his cabinet just ahead of the summer break for MPPs that will see them away from Queen’s Park until late October. As a result, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson now has a somewhat new role as the Minister of Rural Affairs. Thompson has been the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs since June of 2021, however, as part of Ford’s moves last week, that ministry is now split. MPP Rob Flack is now the Minister of Farming, Agriculture and Agribusiness, while Thompson will retain the Rural Affairs portfolio. This is Thompson’s fourth cabinet position in the last six years. She was made the Minister of Education in 2018 before being reassigned the next year as the Minister of Government and Consumer Services. She would serve that office until being named Ontario’s 40th Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in 2021, a post she held until last week. Thompson was first elected in 2011 when she defeated incumbent Liberal Carol Mitchell, who was also the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs at the time. She has since been re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
