Thompson wins fourth term at Queen’s Park By Denny Scott The Citizen
Four more years Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson will make her return to Queen’s Park for a fourth consecutive term after a decisive victory on election night. Thompson garnered more than 50 per cent of the votes cast in Huron and Bruce Counties, a far cry from her closest competition, Shelley Blackmore of the Liberal Party, who received
just under 19 per cent of the vote. Thompson, right, and her husband Dennis Schiestel, left, met with supporters, friends and family members at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club shortly after the polls closed to celebrate her victory and look forward to the future of the riding, and of the province. In a decisive victory, incumbent Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson of the Ontario PC Party retained her seat during the 2022 provincial election last week, marking her fourth consecutive win. Thompson earned 51.97 per cent of the votes cast, or 24,369 according to unofficial results from the provincial election website elections.on.ca. The runner-up for the riding was Shelley Blackmore of the Ontario Liberal Party who captured 8,775 or 18.71 per cent of the vote. Other candidates who ran included Laurie Hazzard of the Ontario New Democratic Party (7,679 votes or 16.38 per cent), Matt Kennedy of the New Blue Party (3,384, 7.22 per cent), Matthew Van Ankum of the Green Party of Ontario (1,924, 4.10 per cent), Gerrie Huenemoerder of the Ontario Party (474, 1.01 per cent), independent Ronald Stephens (212, 0.45 per cent) and Bruce Eisen of the Alliance Party (77 or 0.16) per cent. The riding had 54.28 per cent of its 86,394 registered electors cast a vote, much higher than the provincial turnout of an estimated 43 per cent. Thompson, a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario under re-elected Premier Doug Ford, was the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs before parliament was dismissed for the election. Thompson said that it was humbling to win her fourth consecutive election. “The adrenaline is percolating as Continued on page 3
HE greenlights arena project, amended tender By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron East Council is officially moving ahead with the renovation and expansion of the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, accepting a modified tender for the project Tuesday night for a total project cost of $7.263 million plus HST. The contractor, Elgin Contracting and Restoration Limited, remains the same, but Chief Administrative Officer Brad McRoberts said he was able to work with the contractor to find savings within the proposal to reduce the cost to a manageable figure. After Elgin’s original price came in approximately $1.62 million over the already-increased budget, councillors were faced with a difficult decision last month. However, McRoberts urged patience, saying he felt that further discussion with the contractor and
some revised figures could provide good news at the June 7 council meeting. “In subsequent discussions, Elgin Contracting and Restoration Ltd. indicated that there were opportunities to reduce costs based upon additional subcontractor pricing, costs included that were not specified as a requirement, proposed alternative approaches, substitutions and minor deletions,” McRoberts said in his June 7 report to council. “Based upon the posttender modifications, the tender would be revised to $7,236,000 plus HST, a net reduction of $1,187,000. The fundraising campaign has, as of May 31, 2022, achieved $1,630,000 in donations and pledges, which is $230,000 over their original budgeted goal of $1.4 million. The outstanding budget shortfall, considering the reduced tender price and the additional fundraising dollars is $225,000, accounting for non-refundable HST.”
McRoberts said the shortfall would not affect any of the other partners on the project, such as Morris-Turnberry, as their portion
of the cost of the project would remain the same. The intent is that the fundraising committee will cover the remaining amount,
McRoberts said, adding that he didn’t anticipate any financial implications for the municipality Continued on page 28
