County to review homes By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen
Ending on a high note In the last Huron Heat games of the 2023 calendar year, three teams took to the Central Huron Community Complex ice on New Year’s Eve and none of them allowed a goal from their opponents. First, the
U13 C Huron Heat drew to a scoreless tie with the St. Marys Rock, followed by a 7-0 win over the St. Thomas Panthers HL team for the U15 C Heat and a 6-0 win by the U15 BB Heat over the Guelph Junior Gryphons, above. (John Stephenson photo)
Sebastian named Player of the Year By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Ty Sebastian of Brussels - a member of the Brussels Tigers, Toronto Batmen and Canadian Men’s National Softball Team - has been named the 2023 International Softball Congress (ISC) East Player of the Year just days before the calendars turned to 2024. “Ty had a tremendous season for the Batmen, leading them to two early-season tournament wins, a third at the Canada East Qualifier and seventh at the ISC World Tournament, not to mention that thrilling 15-inning 1-0 win to clinch the Canadian Championship. Ty would throw nearly 200 pitches in that game, recording 22 strikeouts against the formidable Galway Hitmen. He was both the roundrobin and playoff [Most Valuable Player],” reads the announcement on the ISC Canada East Facebook page. “His Brussels Tigers won the Huron County [Fastball] League -
again - and then, for good measure, as a pick-up, he led the Walton Brewers to their first Ontario Challenge Cup Championship. Ty was 5-0, pitching 35 innings, allowing only two runs and seven hits while recording 86 strikeouts. His ‘K-Line’ was 18, 19, 17, 16 and 16 and he allowed only one hit on Sunday, spinning a no-hitter in the championship game.” Also as part of the post, Sebastian thanked his wife, Deanna, for all of her support in watching the games and caring for their son, Beckham, when he’s away at tournaments. The other two nominees for the award were Mathieu Roy of the New York Gremlins and Quinten Bruce of the Bear Creek Express. Sebastian’s play with the Batmen and the national team is all in addition to his work with his home squad of the Brussels Tigers, who were crowned Huron County Fastball League champions again this year, making their way through the year-end tournament not only undefeated, but not giving up a
single run the entire way. While the work of the entire Brussels Tigers team cannot be denied, national fastball figure Ty Sebastian had another season to remember. Going into the final weeks of the season, Sebastian had logged over 72 innings pitched and had given up just two earned runs, resulting in a microscopic earned run average (ERA) of 0.19. On the offensive side of things,
Sebastian was also without equal. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, Sebastian had a batting average of .711, registering 32 hits in 45 at-bats, scoring 24 runs, hitting eight home runs and notching 19 runs batted in (RBIs). He struck out just once. Sebastian has now been the best pitcher in the league for the last eight seasons, which doesn’t include the modified 2021 season Continued on page 20
Huron County Council is requesting a report on the potential for updated long-term care operating models after council’s service delivery review discussions earlier this year. Director of Homes for the Aged Connie Townsend presented a lengthy report to council at its Dec. 20 meeting, entitled “The Changing Landscape of Long-Term Care”. It provided the history of the Huronview and Huronlea Homes for the Aged in Clinton and Brussels, respectively. After the presentation of the report, Chief Administrative Officer Meighan Wark asked councillors if they would like staff to take a “deeper dive” into information regarding the homes, which require a large investment in each year’s county budget. She added that the report was meant to provide “contextual information” and not lead council in any way. Bluewater Mayor Paul Klopp objected to the report, which was a late addition to the agenda. He said he felt as though council didn’t have sufficient time to digest it, despite it being a topic of discussion at the aforementioned service delivery review sessions, and that it was part of a much bigger discussion. This led to Wark telling council that it was not staff’s intention to lead council in one direction or another, but to simply provide contextual information on a discussion that needed to take place. She also told council that it was not making a decision on the future of the homes with such a motion, but simply telling staff that they want more information about the homes. Such a report, she said, would take up significant staff time and resources, so, if council wasn’t interested in learning more, she could just stop the process there. Council signalled its appetite to learn more and voted in favour of a report.
HE considers regional CIP By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron East is moving forward with the creation of a municipalitywide community improvement plan (CIP). Economic Development Officer Taralyn Cronin presented her proposal to council at its Dec. 19 meeting. It would be the first
municipal community improvement plan after a patchwork approach in recent years (a Brussels plan was adopted by council in 2017, while a Seaforth plan was developed in 2019, but was never adopted by council). “This CIP would seek to repeal the existing Brussels CIP and replace it with a broader, more comprehensive CIP,” Cronin said in
her report to council that night. The CIP would “provide financial incentives to encourage private investment in revitalization, redevelopment and enhancement efforts within defined community improvement project areas.” However, Cronin said that the proposed CIP would define the project area as the entire Continued on page 20
