NH glitch frustrates hundreds By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen
’Tis the season The Brussels Santa Claus parade on Saturday night, a holiday tradition in the village, was well-attended and well-reviewed by the hundreds who were there to see it live. Mr. and Mrs. Claus then made their way to the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre to meet with the youth of the village and listen intently as they listed what they hoped to be gifted for Christmas as the days tick away and Christmas draws nearer. (John Stephenson photo)
U13 A, U15 C Heat win tournament gold By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The U13 A Huron Heat found success in the Guelph Winter Classic over the weekend, hosted by the Guelph Junior Gryphons, winning gold after an undefeated six-game run during which the team only allowed one goal. Play began for the girls on Friday morning with a 2-0 win over the Ayr Rockets, followed by another 2-0 win over the host Guelph Junior Gryphons that afternoon. The next morning, the team ended its game with the St. Catharines Brock Junior Badgers in a scoreless tie, followed by a 4-0 victory over the Brampton Canadettes, earning the team a place in Sunday’s semifinal round, which meant a game with the Caledon Coyotes and another 4-0 win for the Heat. In the finals, the locals took on the Brantford Ice Cats and won by a
score of 3-1, securing gold for the tournament. Also in Guelph at the Winter Classic, the U15 A Heat made it to the semifinal round, but came up just short of the tournament’s big game. The team opened on Friday with a 4-0 win over the host Guelph Junior Gryphons and a 3-2 victory over the Mississauga Hurricanes, followed by a 2-2 tie with the North Simcoe Capitals and a 2-1 loss to the Ancaster Avalanche, both on Saturday. The next day, the Heat played the Ancaster Avalanche again in the semifinals, but fell once again by a score of 3-0, ending their tournament. Not to be outdone, the U15 C Heat won their own gold medal at Exeter’s Pink on the Rink tournament over the weekend. The team was one of four Heat teams that made the trip south for the tournament.
On Friday morning, the team began tournament play with a 1-0 win over the Ilderton Jets, followed by another 1-0 win over the South Bruce Blades that night. On Saturday, the Heat continued
its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over the West Oxford Inferno, punching its ticket to Sunday play. That meant a date in the semifinals with the Wallaceburg Lakers, which Continued on page 28
Last week, approximately 350 North Huron residents awoke to find some money missing from their accounts, taken by way of preauthorized payment withdrawal by the township in error. It was the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 4 that the residents noticed their money was missing. According to Clerk and acting Chief Administrative Officer Carson Lamb, there was an “administrative error” in processing pre-authorized tax payment withdrawals for residents who used the monthly property tax payment plan, resulting in three times the correct amount being withdrawn in error before the due date. At 10 a.m. that morning, Lamb e-mailed The Citizen, saying that the township was aware of the error and which residents had been impacted by it. He also noted that a solution had been identified and that the township’s finance department was working diligently to correct the issue. Later that afternoon, just before 4:30 p.m., Lamb e-mailed again, saying that approximately 350 people were billed in error and that the township’s finance department was working with the township’s financial institution to have the charges reversed as soon as possible and that the request was being escalated. By the next day, the funds had been returned, but there were complaints about banking or overdraft fees associated with the erroneous withdrawal and questions about the township covering those costs. In an e-mail to The Citizen on Friday morning, Lamb said that finance department staff was in the process of reaching out to the affected financial institutions about having the overdraft and bank fees reversed.
