Talyats: Meet
the New Kids on the Block
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991 | Photos provided by Talyat family
Stephanie and Brady Talyat and their four children are the newest kids on the block. They bought their home on Erb Ct. in February when Stephanie was 9 months pregnant with their 4th child. They undertook a huge remodel, while both were selling real estate and shuttling the kids to their schools and activities. Finally, this July they were able to move into their “forever home.” For Stephanie it is like coming home. She grew up in Walnut Creek, attending our neighborhood schools, and now they are living 7 doors down from her parents.
Stephanie and Brady met when a group of old high school friends, home for the weekend, met up at Clayton Valley Bowl. Stephanie was living in Marina Del Rey at the time and had a serious boyfriend. It was already 11pm, and Stephanie did not feel like going out when her girlfriend finally convinced her to come; she had on sweats and no makeup, but finally agreed. But nothing could prevent Brady taking interest; he flirted with her all night despite being told of her boyfriend down in Southern California.
It was two years later, when Stephanie moved back to Walnut Creek, that they dated a few times. But that only lasted a few months because Stephanie was making plans to leave for Shanghai for 6 months. The moment she landed back in California she had a text from Brady. “After our “first” date, we were inseparable,” says Stephanie. They were engaged a year and a half later and got married in 2015 at a beautiful ceremony at Casa Real in Pleasanton.
Brady grew up in Concord and graduated from Concord High School. He went right to work, in order to help his mom after Brady’s father passed away. He began as a detailer at Harley Davidson and worked his way up to Service Manager, spending 20 years there. In the past year, in order to have more flexibility for their growing family, he got his real estate license and now works as an agent.
So now they are a family of two real estate professionals, as Stephanie has been in the field for 13 years, currently working for The Kehrig Real Estate Team at Coldwell Banker Realty. “I love that real estate gives me new things and new people to meet every day,” says Stephanie. Stephanie’s dad, Josè, has been a commercial real estate broker for 30 years, and he urged her to try the profession too. Stephanie played volleyball at Northgate and in college. At 5’3” you would not expect a volleyball player, but she played “libero,” a defensive specialist position and has a great competitive spirit. She made All Conference in 2004 and studied business at Cal State Dominguez Hills. She was the head coach of the varsity women’s volleyball team at Northgate following college, leading them to two league championships. After pursuing a short career in music, Stephanie now sings in her church’s worship team.
The Talyats have four adorable children: Bryson (8), Shayla (6), Noa (3), and Rylee (6 months). Bryson and Shayla attended a private school in Concord, but Stephanie is excited for them to start at Walnut Acres this year. A “new family” social, plus sports teams have helped them make friends already. “In Concord we were missing that sense of community,”
adds Stephanie. “That’s one thing we love about Northgate, that sense of community.”
Stephanie and Brady are master schedulers and jugglers, sharing a master calendar so they can both manage their work schedules and getting the kids to all their activities without babysitters. In fact, Stephanie is still nursing baby Rylee and closing deals all over the Bay Area. It’s very much a team effort between her and Brady.
Bryson loves sports, and so does Shayla. The two are only 16 months apart and can play baseball together in the backyard for hours. Shayla also loves dance; Noa is the comedian but also likes dance and sports like her older sister. Rylee seems to go with the flow with all the activities she is shuttled to.
The Talyat family is passionate about many things. They are huge Bay Area sports fans, as are Stephanie’s parents and siblings, all rooting for the Warriors, Giants and 49ers. They are passionate about family: “I come from a big Filipino family (mom is from

a family of 11 and dad is from a family of 9). We have a lot of fun family traditions including the singing of the “12 Days of Christmas” together with a very hysterical twist. Lots of acting and dancing moves go along with it.” They love Disneyland and Hawaii, going to Disney at least twice per year. And as Stephanie adds, “We are passionate about real estate; we love helping people and try to give our clients a first-class experience, while making it fun. We love buying and selling our own properties too. But our ultimate goal in life is to raise happy, healthy children and to help them discover their highest potential and their own passions.” Welcome back to Northgate Stephanie and family!

European Delights is a great local bakery
By Kevin Wilk, City Council Member, Resident since 1997

European Delights Bakery is a hidden gem of a coffee and pastry small shop in the Citrus Center (between BevMo and the Post Office). They make the most DELICIOUS European pastries and the owner, Rica, is wonderful.
The bakery/coffee shop has withstood challenges, but there are still struggles. Rica Zaharia, an immigrant from Romania, owns the shop with her brother. They made it through the Pandemic and multiple PG&E outages, and are now trying to stay afloat as a small independent family run store. They have invested their life savings into this store. They need our patronage, and we need them!
Rica and her husband first came to the United States from Transylvania, Romania in 2003. They first lived in Santa Fe where Rica worked at an assisted living facility. Her baked goods were legendary there, and she was encouraged to open her own bakery. That did not happen until she moved to Walnut Creek in 2019 when she decided it was time to make her dream come true. Rica makes everything in house, from scratch, with a wide variety of pastries inspired from all over Europe.
If you haven’t been there, try it out. It will instantly become a go-to spot for you on this side of town, and we can help a small business survive! Make this your destination for your next coffee date or breakfast out.

New Champagne and Bubbles Bar opens in downtown Walnut Creek
By Lisa Crossett, Resident since 2001
Do you love Champagne? If so, there’s a brand-new Champagne & Bubbles Bar in downtown Walnut Creek called Fizz. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Raymond James, the Chief Champagne Officer and owner of Fizz. Raymond’s love affair with Champagne began during a transformative trip to the Champagne region in France in 2016. This life-changing experience inspired him to open Fizz Champagne & Bubbles Bar in Sacramento two years later, where he quickly found success. As Raymond shared with me, he went from being an “opera singer to a champagne slinger,” with a bachelor’s degree in Voice Performance, Classical Music/Opera from the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music.
The Walnut Creek location, officially opened on July 12th with a grand sabering of 6-liter bottles for guests to enjoy, is the second Fizz bar. Raymond is on a mission to create a “Champagne Revolution” with plans to expand to Newport Beach, Scottsdale, Atlanta, Miami, and Nashville. His passion for Champagne & Bubbles is infectious, and his extensive knowledge, gained from multiple trips to France and other sparkling wine regions, is impressive. He personally knows the winemakers at 90% of the Champagne houses and shares this expertise with his staff, customers, and wine club members. A trained sommelier, Raymond was knighted into the “Knighthood of Champagne.”
Fizz offers a curated selection of over 100 different Champagnes and sparkling wines from around the world, with 25 available by the glass and six unique flights at various price points. The food menu is equally decadent, featuring signature items like Duck Fat Fries with truffle salt and champagne aioli. Other offerings include Mushroom Toasts with avocado, caramelized onions, and walnuts, Caviar, Oysters on the Half Shell, Croque Monsieur, and Caramelized Baby Bella Mushrooms, with the option to add Italian Summer Truffles to any dish.
Fizz embodies the philosophy of “Champagne for All” with its bright, joyful, and welcoming atmosphere, offering both outdoor bistro dining and a chic French vibe inside. Raymond’s passion and knowledge of Champagne are evident in the authentic and personalized service he and his staff provide. The Fizz Champagne Club, with four membership levels ranging from “The Aficionado” at $59/month to “The Baller” at $300/month, offers exclusive perks and special events.
In partnership with the Lesher Center for the Arts, Fizz offers Pre-Fixe menus to complement the performance schedule. The bar also hosts an exquisite Champagne Brunch on weekends and a monthly educational tasting series highlighting different Champagnes and Sparkling Wines from around the world. Upcoming events include the “Champagne Legend Dinner” series that started in August, featuring Krug, September featuring Dom Perignon, and October featuring Ruinart, the oldest and first Champagne house, with specially curated multi-course dinners.

Raymond also curates bespoke travel experiences to Champagne, Burgundy, South Africa, and Northern Italy. These exclusive trips, limited to 12 people, offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore renowned wine regions with everything included except airfare. A few spots remain for the April 2025 trip to Northern Italy.
Fizz is a delightful addition to downtown Walnut Creek, offering an ambiance, vibe, and selection that promises to enchant Champagne lovers. With its indulgent menu, exceptional service, and Raymond’s vision of a Champagne Revolution, Fizz is a must-visit destination. Cheers!
Lisa has been a Northgate resident since 2001. Professionally she is the President of Crossett Search & Advisory Group. There's a new bookstore in town!
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
BookFriends opened its doors on July 12 in the Ygnacio Plaza shopping center, between TJ Maxx and Sports Basement. And this is not your typical bookstore!
Book Friends is run by Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. It is staffed by volunteers, and all the proceeds of this location go to the Contra Costa County Library System to buy new ebooks and regular books, which are available to all branches of the CCC Library. That means you can get a great deal on used books, and the money you spend goes to support more books at our library, a true win-win!
The Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library has been very successful since moving from their early days of parking lot sales once per quarter, to now, three physical stores that are open daily. The other two stores are located inside the PH Library and another on Contra Costa Blvd. These two stores exclusively fund the Pleasant Hill Library. But this new store in Walnut Creek benefits the entire county.
Books are donated and then re-sold at their three stores for $2-$6 generally. Some popular or collector items will sell for more. They also have a wide selection of puzzles, which have been tested by volunteers to ensure there are no missing pieces.
Bob Goldner, board member of the Friends of PHL, says, “We had so many books in our inventory that we needed a third store. I live close by, so this location worked out.” After paying expenses, the organization
nets about $10,000 per month to feed into the library system. Bob anticipated this new store adding $60,000 or more per year to the $120,000 they raise already.
They are open every day from 11-5, with thousands of books on the shelves, and more that can be ordered from their stock of about 20,000 books. They also take donations of books and are looking for volunteers to work at this location.
Book lovers: stop in and get a bargain on your next great read. They have all genres from children’s to New York Times bestsellers and everything in between. phlibraryfriends.org for more information.

Volunteers Rick Barnes and Bob Goldner have spent many hours preparing for Book Friends’ grand opening.
Her STEM Space: Empowering Girls Around the World
By Angie Yao, Resident since 2013
In a world that is shaped by science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, diversity in these STEM fields is crucial. However, women remain underrepresented in STEM. Angie Yao, a junior at Northgate High School, recognized this at her school, where classes and clubs such as coding and robotics were composed of little to no girls. As a result, Angie founded the Women in STEM club at Northgate, which holds meetings every month and brings students together to engage in STEM activities while learning about various fields. As the club grew to over 40 members, Angie decided to involve her community by founding the nonprofit organization Her STEM Space.
Her STEM Space has put together multiple events. Last November, they hosted a webinar with panelists from Nvidia, Verily, and Qualcomm. In April, an activity was hosted at Walnut Acres Elementary School that introduced students to engineering through building structures with spaghetti and marshmallows. Her STEM Space currently holds coding classes at the library, which teach the Scratch block coding language. The impact of this organization has extended beyond Northgate, with social media posts and blog articles from their website reaching audiences internationally. Girls from a diverse range of backgrounds have come together to create posts about careers ranging from mechanical engineering to microbiology and write blog articles about groundbreaking women like Rosalind Franklin, Chien-Shiung Wu, and Nguyet Anh Duong. Her STEM Space has created a supportive environment for girls all over the world to collaborate with each other, explore STEM, and achieve their goals.
Currently, Her STEM Space has expanded to almost 3,000 members internationally across North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia. Her STEM Space has 42 chapters in 18 US states, Guam, Egypt, and Nigeria. Members earn volunteer hours by creating informative social media posts and blog articles for their blog and social media accounts with over 20,000 followers. To learn more about Her STEM Space and support their mission, please visit herstemspace.org or https://gofund.me/cca5e723
Her STEM Space is currently accepting volunteers! If you would like to join and earn volunteer hours, please fill out this Google Form at https://forms.gle/UeFrao8aSzidQNde8.

Transform Your Space: Inspiring Home Remodeling Ideas for Every Room (Part 1)
By Gordon Reese, Gordon Reese Design Build, Resident since 2008
Remodeling your home can be an exhilarating journey of transformation. It’s an opportunity to breathe new life into your living space, infusing it with your personality, style, and modern functionality. Whether you’re looking to enhance a single room or undertake a complete home makeover, the possibilities are endless. Let’s dive into some inspiring home remodeling ideas for every room that will spark your creativity and excitement.
Revitalize Your Living Room
The living room is often the heart of the home, where family and friends gather to relax and enjoy each other’s company. To transform this space, consider updating the flooring and walls. Hardwood floors or stylish tiles can add a touch of elegance and warmth. For instance, oak hardwood floors provide a timeless appeal, while ceramic tiles can offer a modern, sleek look.
Accent walls with bold colors or textured wallpapers can create a focal point and add character. Imagine a deep navy wall behind your sofa or a brick-textured wallpaper that brings an industrial chic vibe. Incorporate modern furniture pieces with clean lines. Mid-century modern sofas and minimalist coffee tables are perfect examples. Add cozy elements like plush rugs and throw pillows to create a welcoming ambiance.
Lighting is key—opt for a combination of overhead lights, floor lamps, and table lamps. Pendant lights with dimmers allow you to adjust the brightness to suit different activities, while floor lamps can illuminate reading nooks.
Modernize Your Kitchen
The kitchen is more than just a place to cook; it’s a hub of activity and creativity. A modern kitchen remodel can dramatically improve both functionality and aesthetics. Start with the cabinetry—sleek, flat-panel cabinets in neutral tones or vibrant colors can make a bold statement. Consider matte black or glossy white cabinets for a contemporary look.
Upgrade your countertops to durable materials like quartz or granite. Quartz is not only beautiful but also resistant to stains and scratches.

A stylish backsplash can tie the design together. Subway tiles are a classic choice, while glass mosaics add a touch of glamour.
High-quality, energy-efficient appliances not only look great but also enhance your cooking experience. Smart refrigerators with touch screens and Wi-Fi connectivity, induction cooktops, and convection ovens are just a few examples. Create an open, airy feel by removing unnecessary walls or adding a kitchen island for extra workspace and seating. Islands with built-in sinks or cooktops can increase functionality while providing a casual dining area.
Elevate Your Bathroom
A bathroom remodel can turn a utilitarian space into a spa-like retreat. Focus on fixtures and finishes—modern, water-saving faucets and showerheads, a freestanding bathtub, and a sleek vanity can all make a significant impact. Choose calming colors and natural materials like stone or wood to create a serene environment.
Enhanced lighting, including task lighting around mirrors and ambient lighting in the shower, can elevate the space. Recessed lights in the ceiling, LED strips under the vanity, and wall-mounted sconces can all contribute to a luxurious feel. Consider adding heated floors for a touch of luxury and comfort.
Conclusion: Your Dream Home Awaits
Remodeling your home is a chance to infuse it with your unique style and improve its functionality. Each room offers opportunities for creative expression and practical enhancements. By focusing on modern design elements, high-quality materials, and thoughtful layouts, you can transform your space into a haven of comfort, style, and efficiency.
Gordon Reese Design Build is here to help you realize your remodeling goals, from design through construction, within an established investment range. With our expertise and commitment to excellence, we ensure your home transformation is smooth, successful, and perfectly aligned with your vision. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we will explore how to refresh your bedroom, optimize your home office, and enhance outdoor living spaces.
