Dear Neighbors,

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, and I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring weather that has finally arrived! In this issue you will meet the Nadwornys, a family that has moved to Northgate as their version of the California Dream and are making an impact in our community. There are lots of fun events to check out in our calendar and stories on non-profits doing amazing things in our community. Hopefully you’ll find new ways to feel inspired to help others.

I’m eager to hear from you and share your stories whether you have gardening or book tips, an adorable pet, an interesting adventure to share, a hobby, a recipe, a charity you’re involved with, or any other topic you think the Northgate neighbors would like to hear more about. I’m also looking for families to feature each month on the front cover. I believe that interesting stories don’t just come from celebrities, but from our own communities. Everyone has a story to tell, and I’d love it if you’d let me tell yours. Send your articles and photos to knavolio@bestversionmedia.com.

Warmly,

Meet the

Nadwornys: Living their California Dream

Sherry and Eric Nadworny moved to California 11 years ago from Boston. Eric had a job opportunity in the Bay Area at the same time both of their children were leaving New England, and they decided to finally realize a dream of moving to California. They first rented a house in Dublin to see what part of the Bay Area they wanted to be in. “It was hands down Walnut Creek,” says Sherry. Seven years ago, they bought their house in Northgate.

Sherry was born and raised in Boston; she earned a degree in Mass Communications from Emerson College in Boston. Eric is from Burlington, VT, and slowly made his way south to Boston graduating from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and then attending Boston University School of Law. They met on a blind date. Sherry says, “I needed a roommate and the woman who answered my ad had a dog who didn’t get along with my dog. Since she wouldn’t be able to be my roommate, she came up with another idea – meet her brother who lived in the neighborhood. I had only met her that once, but took the chance.” That chance meeting blossomed, and they married in 1984.

When they were in Boston, Eric’s job as a Labor and Employment lawyer for a major healthcare chain required him to come out to the Bay Area once or twice a year. Sherry adds, “On one of those visits, while picnicking in Napa, we met a man who had just started making wine. He became a dear friend, and as his wine venture grew, we became limited partners in his winery - Rosenblum Cellars, which gave us the opportunity to travel here more often. We wanted to move to the Bay Area, but with elderly parents and then children who were in school and activities, it never seemed like a dream that would be fulfilled. Then my younger daughter, Hillary, graduated from college in Rhode Island and got a job in LA, and my older daughter, Katie, moved to Istanbul.” All the stars aligned for their move to California.

Hillary is now the Senior Events Manager for UCLA, division of Social Sciences. She also enjoys music and is the vocalist for a Meatloaf Cover Band called Legendary Pot Roast. They perform around the country. Katie works as a freelance writer and journalist. Her articles have appeared in the Guardian, Nation Geographic, the Daily Beast, The Independent, and more. She recently published in the Atlantic earning a Pulitzer Grant.

Sherry and Eric like to travel and always brought their children on trips, especially overseas. “I’m sure that is where my older daughter got the interest in living as an ex-pat,” reflects Sherry. Eric and Sherry do a lot of hiking and biking. “We love Northgate with its easy access to Borges Ranch, Castle Rock, and other hiking trails, and we love the bike trails. Another benefit of the bike trail is that I ride my bike to work.”

Sherry is the Director of Development and Community Relations at Meals on Wheels Diablo Region, which is located in Downtown Walnut Creek. “When my mother was alive, Meals on Wheels in Boston kept her independent and at home. She couldn’t cook anymore and needed a meal midday. I lived 40 minutes away, had two small children and worked. It was a tremendous help and relief knowing that she would not only get a nutritious meal, but that the volunteer was able to check on her to let me know if she was okay. I felt so passionately about MOW that I knew I had

to apply when a position opened up three years ago. It was a life-affirming choice, and I feel so fortunate that I can help other seniors like my mom. I often have interactions with clients and adult children. I understand their worry about having enough food, or not being able to prepare food. No one, especially a senior should worry about going hungry.” Sherry started out after college working as a news writer at a Boston TV station and then worked for a little bit doing news and public affairs for a radio station in Boston. She transitioned to Public Relations for healthcare and hospital organizations in Boston. She did this for over 20 years. Later she fell into fundraising because she started doing events in her PR capacity and realized her skills where a good match to raise funds for good organizations. When they first moved to California, Sherry worked in Berkeley as the Development Manager for a nonprofit that produced health books in over 80 languages for people throughout the world who had no access to health care.

None of her previous work has given her the same level of sense of purpose as Meals on Wheels Diablo Region has. “Working in Walnut Creek and living in Northgate has made me appreciate what a vibrant and caring community we chose, and reading about others in Northgate makes me feel that we really found the best neighborhood in the whole city!” adds Sherry.

Delivering Meals to Northgate Seniors

While you may not realize it, there are seniors in Northgate who are the hidden hungry. They’re homebound, isolated, and experiencing food insecurity. Inflation has had an impact on those living on fixed incomes – costs increase but their incomes don’t. Many elders no longer drive and are too frail to negotiate their way around the supermarket or to carry grocery bags. Arthritis or other health problems make it impossible for them to stand to cook or even cut up a carrot. Seniors depend on Meals on Wheels Diablo Region to deliver meals and supportive services so they can remain nourished, safe, less isolated, and able to remain at home with dignity.

To continue their work, MOW Diablo Region will hold its Dining to Deliver Gala on June 10th at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville. Support will help the organization meet the growing need for delivered meals and services. According to Caitlin Sly, Executive Director, every day, 10,000 people turn age 70 in the United States and in Contra Costa County, older adults are the fastest growing segment of the population. Inflation, people living longer, and the fragile support system for seniors means Meals on Wheels Diablo Region is the safety net for older adults. “There are many in Northgate who have lived in the

neighborhood for 30 or 40 years. They are now alone, frail and need delivered meals to keep from going hungry,” added Sly. MOW can even deliver to people short-term who are recuperating from surgeries.

Not only is the Dining to Deliver Gala fun, but the proceeds also allow MOW Diablo Region to keep up with the 50% increase in service it has seen since 2020. Last year the organization delivered over 600,000 meals and is on track to deliver even more this year. For information on Gala tickets, sponsorship, auction donations, or to find out how you can help, visit mowdiabloregion.org.

Use Your Professional Development Fund in 2023Learn Why Your Self-Leadership Skills Are Valuable

Did you know you may be leaving money on the table at work? Many companies offer a Personal Development budget and if you don’t use it in 2023, you may lose it. Personal Development budgets vary from company to company, but they can range from $500 to $2,000 or more depending on your leadership role. When planning to allocate your funds in 2023, it’s a good idea to look at the gaps in your skill set. Good leaders tend to have a blind spot and they lack self-awareness. Great leaders have high self-awareness and regularly seek feedback to understand the impact they have on others.

According to an article in Forbes, titled, Why Self Awareness Is The Most Important Skill For Hybrid Leadership, they say “Ask 100 leadership experts what the most important leadership skill is for the new hybrid workplace and you may get responses like listening, vulnerability, emotional intelligence, humility, coaching, etc. There have been many studies and articles with solid reasoning for developing all of those soft skills in leaders. But many of these abilities are based on one truly important attribute that accelerates our growth in most aspects of life: Self-awareness.”

Self-awareness is about recognizing and understanding our personalities, emotions, and skills. There are two types of selfawareness: First, is internal self-awareness, which is to know your values, understand your feelings, and choose responses that represent your brand. You understand your strengths and weaknesses, which allows you to grow your self-confidence. Second, is external self-awareness which is about understanding how others view you. It helps leaders create more collaborative working environments, and helps to build trust.

In essence, soft skills are people skills, and they are highly soughtafter in many companies. Here are five ways that increasing selfawareness can impact your professional success:

1. Make decisions with other people in mind, like how an ask may impact someone’s work-life balance.

2. Bring your core values to work and embody them with each decision you make.

3. Take time to understand your team members’ needs and viewpoints.

4. Be honest with yourself and others when you’re stressed or upset and have tools to bounce back from disappointment.

5. Allow yourself and others to express emotions without judgment, which will increase team trust and safety.

This list may seem daunting, however, you can partner with a certified professional coach who can guide you to create customized strategies to improve your self-awareness and

leadership. If you’re in a leadership role - whether new to it or seasoned - you likely would benefit from working 1:1 with a certified professional coach and you can use your Personal Development fund to supplement the cost.

To find out how professional coaching can help you be a more effective leader, schedule a 30-minute conversation with Tracy Pajer from Tracy Pajer Coaching System and learn more about leadership development via 1:1 coaching, team workshops, or presentations to your organization. Tracy is a Certified Professional Coach with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and Master Practitioner of the Energy Leadership Index. The Tracy Pajer Coaching System develops influential leaders so that your organization and everyone in it can reach their growth goals faster and with less stress.

Amuse Bouche: Channel your Inner Michelin Chef

Throwing a dinner party can be overwhelming for some and bring joy to others. The enduring combination of food, wine, friends, and great conversation are the ingredients for a perfect dinner party. Whether you choose to throw a casual or fancy dinner party, your friends will be thrilled to receive an invite. Entertaining at home creates memories that you can cherish for a lifetime. Often my friends call me Martha Stewart who is certainly an entertaining idol of mine along with Ina Garten.

Dinner parties are an outlet for me to express my creativity and bring friends together. A few months ago, I threw a dinner party with the theme “Dinner at Tiffany’s” featuring a 60’s inspired menu and table decorations aptly featuring the famous tiffany blue. In the December Northgate Living issue, I provide details on planning and executing a dinner party in an article, and you can read about it online at www.northgatelivingca.com. For the Dinner at Tiffany’s party, I purchased small tiaras for the women to feel like Audrey Hepburn along with adding an artistic drawing of Holly Golightly to the individual menus. In addition, each person had that iconic blue box and white ribbon at their place setting with a small surprise inside. I know you are probably wondering what was in the box. It was a sweet treat versus a round 3 carat diamond. Smile.

Over time, I have refined my entertaining style to include an amuse bouche (pronounced ah-myuz boosh) which originated in France in the 18th century. It simply means “mouth amuser” and is often a complementary little bite from the chef. It is a small bite of magic for your mouth and a tasty, purposeful foreshadowing of what is next, and it also pampers your guests. It can be a solo bite or multiple bites progressive in nature or simply one primary ingredient done in various ways. For the “Dinner at Tiffany’s” party, I served “Deviled Eggs with Bacon & Potato Chips”, “60’s Meatball with Grape Jelly & Chili Sauce” and “Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnut & Teriyaki sauce”. You could virtually travel back to the 60’s with this amuse bouche.

You can serve these bite-sized portions on a small plate, spoon, endive leaf, or a tiny dish. Sometimes people see this as only for a Michelin starred restaurant, but I say disrupt that concept. The only limit is your imagination. It is a tease for the rest of the meal and a slice of your personality and spirit. First, it should be visually appealing or something your guests deem Instagram worthy. Second, it should be flavorful and finally something that can be consumed in one bite. It can be sweet or savory, hot or cold, simple, or complex. Honestly,

this little nibble can be almost anything that bursts with flavor and perfumed with aromatic notes.

In past parties, I have done an amuse bouche tasting of sorts. I chose one primary ingredient and prepared three different bites. I adore parmesan cheese from Whole Foods that is cut directly from the large wheel. The nutty, rich flavor is simply amazing. The three bites featuring parmesan cheese were – “Parmesan Onion Canape”, “Parmesan, Tomato Confit & Aged Balsamic” and “Parmesan Dip with Toasted Points”. I am in love with Bocconcini (small fresh mozzarella balls) since they have so much versatility. I created a amuse bouche tasting which featured Bocconcini prepared three different ways - “Tomato Confit & Basil Chiffonade”, “Balsamic Fig Jam with Crispy Prosciutto” and “Finely Chopped Dried Cranberry, Bacon, Chive and Aged Balsamic”.

I hope I have inspired you to let your creative juices flow, leap out of your comfort zone and you create your own amuse bouche to serve at your next dinner party. Cheers!

Hope Walk supports cancer patients

It is often difficult to know what to do when we find out one of our loved ones has cancer. I’ve found myself in this situation far too many times - several close friends, my cousin, my grandmother, my three aunts, and my father. We try our best to help support them. Sometimes, we just don’t know what to do. Cancer is a horrible disease.

I found out about Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area (CSC) through my friend, Joanne, who lost her battle with cancer in 2021. One day she told me that she was going to yoga. I was curious because I had recently become certified as a yoga instructor. So, I dug deeper and found out that the yoga classes were offered free at CSC. And, yoga was just the tip of the iceberg. CSC is a local nonprofit that has a full calendar of comprehensive support programs that are provided to cancer patients and their loved ones at no cost through the generosity of individual contributions. CSC’s mission resonated with me, and I wanted to help support this worthy cause.

Last year I participated in their Hope Walk and formed a team to honor Joanne and walked my very first 5K event. This year, I’m part of the 2023 Hope Walk Planning Committee. My “Team Joanne” will be walking again in honor of my dear friend. I hope you will join me in supporting this incredible organization that we’re lucky to have in our own backyard. Visit hopewalkbayarea.net to participate in the Hope Walk on Saturday, May 20 at Heather Farm Park. I’d love to see you there!

May 2023 Change Orders: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. How to Avoid the Ugly and Get What You Pay For

Change orders are an inevitable part of any construction project, but they can also be a source of frustration and disappointment for clients. At Gordon Reese Design Build, we understand that change orders can be a double-edged sword, as they can provide an opportunity to improve the project or lead to a breakdown in communication and additional costs. In this blog post, we will discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly of change orders, and how you can avoid the ugly and get what you pay for.

The Good: Change Orders Can Improve Your Project

Change orders can be a positive addition to your project, as they can allow you to make necessary adjustments and improvements that were not initially considered. This can lead to a more functional and aesthetically pleasing end result. For example, you may decide to upgrade to higher-quality materials, add additional features, or change the layout to better suit your needs. Change orders can also provide an opportunity for our team to identify and correct any unforeseen issues that may arise during construction.

The Bad: Change Orders Can Be Frustrating and Time-Consuming

While change orders can be beneficial, they can also be a source of frustration and delay. It’s important to understand that every change order can impact the project timeline and budget, so it’s essential to consider the potential consequences before making a request. Additionally, multiple change orders can lead to miscommunication and conflict between the client and the contractor, potentially damaging the working relationship and creating a negative experience for everyone involved.

The Ugly: How to Avoid Costly Change Orders

The ugly side of change orders occurs when they are excessive or unnecessary. To

avoid this situation, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of your project requirements before construction begins. This includes establishing a realistic budget and timeline, as well as clearly communicating your vision and expectations with your contractor. By working closely with your contractor from the outset, you can reduce the likelihood of misunderstandings and ensure that the project is completed to your satisfaction.

Another key factor in avoiding costly change orders is to select a reputable and experienced contractor who has a track record of successfully completing projects similar to yours. At Gordon Reese Design Build, we pride ourselves on our transparency and commitment to delivering high-quality results that meet our clients’ expectations. We work closely with our clients to ensure that their project requirements are clearly defined and understood, minimizing the need for change orders. In addition, it’s important to be realistic about the scope of the project and avoid making midstream changes that can lead to additional costs and delays. By carefully considering your needs and priorities before construction begins, you can reduce the likelihood of needing to make significant changes down the line.

Conclusion

Change orders are an inevitable part of any construction project, but they can also be a source of frustration and additional costs. By understanding the potential benefits and drawbacks of change orders, you can make informed decisions that minimize the need for additional changes and ensure that your project is completed to your satisfaction. At Gordon Reese Design Build, we are committed to working closely with our clients to deliver high-quality results that meet their unique needs and specifications. Congratulations to TAPS seniors!

And thank you for serving our community!

TAPS was founded on February 1, 2002. The purpose of TAPS, as a private, non-profit organization, is to provide high school girls with a variety of community service opportunities. Over the course of their high school years, members develop valuable leadership, organization, and teamwork skills and participate in various community service and support areas. To further this purpose, parents actively work alongside their daughters and in volunteer roles to support the organization’s mission. TAPS reaches out to high school girls and their parents of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest and commitment to community service. Its purpose is exclusively educational, service oriented and charitable; TAPS emphasizes community support through volunteer hours rather than fundraising dollars. Our graduating senior class has 18 teens from the local High Schools in the Walnut Creek area.

Chloe Castillo

Chloe has loved her time as a part of TAPS, her favorite memory being over the summer volunteering with Love-A-Child, at Jump In! where she played with little kids in the pool, having water fights and helping them learn to swim. In the fall Chloe will be attending a 4-year university, majoring in Environmental Studies.

Sasha Coester

The moments of pure joy and gratitude that occur when you lead with your heart and are able to serve others is why I joined TAPS. Being able to share this experience with my collaborative and generous friends is why I loved my time and was continuously inspired all four years.

Kate Michels

I have loved being a part of TAPS these past few years! Some of my favorite memories have been working with Love-A-Child for swim days. I also really enjoyed our

senior project, which was creating art with trafficking victims. In the fall, I will be attending a four year university to earn a degree in health sciences.

Lauren Philips

I have been a part of TAPS since my freshman year. One of my favorite events that I volunteered at has been Night to Shine. It is a prom for special needs kids, and I love seeing their faces light up as they walk down the red carpet and dance the night away feeling like they are walking on the moon. Another amazing event was our senior class project. Our class worked together to plan an event through a wonderful program called Arm of Care. We created a day with therapeutic art projects for girls who have been rescued from human trafficking. I’m planning to attend Grand Canyon University in the fall and major in Early Childhood Education with an emphasis in Christian Studies.

Tade Scheid

One of Tade’s favorite memories from TAPS has been working with Love a Child and teaching kids to swim at the annual Jump In event. She learned that she loves to sort all kinds of things— baby clothes, crayons, jewelry, and food! After graduation, Tade is looking forward to pursuing Biology at a 4 year college.

Abby Titterton

One of Abby’s favorite memories from TAPS was setting up the holiday light show at Ruth Bancroft Garden, which made her feel more connected with her local community. Abby plans to attend UC Berkeley in the fall to study English.

Emma Vieira

In the fall, I will be attending the University of Oregon to study Education and Child Development. I really enjoyed participating in TAPS throughout my time in high school because of all the different people I was able to help. I appreciated being able to give back to my community and help people in need. My favorite TAPS event was “Jump In!” during the summer!

Kaitlin Weitl

Some of Kaitlin’s favorite memories from TAPS include volunteering with Love-AChild and teaching kids to swim at Jump In, helping organize a hygiene kit drive with her class for the IRC, and participating in the Senior class event with ARM of Care. Kaitlin will be attending a 4-year college in the fall pursuing a Business degree.
