Welcome to the 2023 Nutrien Children’s

Bienvenue au Nutrien Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan de 2023!

The arts play a key role in the development of children. As a government, we are proud to support initiatives that allow our children to be exposed to art and culture, as well as develop their own talent and creativity. With each edition, this festival helps create our artists and culture enthusiasts of tomorrow. I am pleased that children of all ages and backgrounds can once again gather at Kinsmen Park to participate in the many fun activities for this 35th edition.

Les arts jouent un rôle clé dans le développement de l’enfant. Comme gouvernement, nous sommes fiers de soutenir des initiatives qui exposent les enfants aux arts et à la culture et leur permettent de développer leur propre talent et leur créativité. À chacune des moutures, ce festival contribue à créer nos artistes et nos amateurs de culture de demain. Je suis content que les enfants de tous âges et horizons puissent de nouveau se rassembler au parc Kinsmen pour participer aux nombreuses activités amusantes offertes dans le cadre de cette 35e mouture.

A Message from the Premier On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2023 Nutrien Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan. A highly anticipated annual event, the excitement and magic is back this summer.

Over the years, thousands of children, parents, teachers, and caregivers have enjoyed this thrilling arts festival. This inclusive event celebrates diverse cultures with programs that encourage learning and playing together, contributing to the positive social well-being of our vibrant next generation.

Recognizing that it takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to bring this 4-day festival together, I would like to thank the numerous volunteers, organizers, and sponsors for helping to make this “celebration of all things play” possible.

Hello from Nutrien!

We are delighted that you’re here at the Nutrien Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan.

At Nutrien, we believe that educating and engaging our youth is key to ensuring a healthy future. That’s why we’re proud to support events like this, which enable our children to play and learn together. Along with sponsoring the festival, Nutrien is happy to share our Seed Survivor and Fossil Find venues with you. At Seed Survivor children can learn about where their food comes from and what plants need to grow healthy and strong. At Fossil Find young explorers can sift through material brought in from Nutrien’s phosphate operation in Aurora, North Carolina in search for treasures like buried shells, coral, and shark teeth!

The Nutrien Children’s Festival is a wonderful springtime tradition, and we’re glad you’re here to enjoy it. We look forward to seeing you at our Seed Survivor and Fossil Find exhibits and sharing more about our commitment to Feeding the Future. Have a great time!

To the children of Saskatchewan, their parents and caregivers, all the volunteers, the festival staff, and the performers.

On behalf of the Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan Board of Directors, I would like to welcome everyone to the 2023 festival!

We are extremely excited to bring you this year’s festival and the return of the Big Top stage! This allows us to present more entertainment, more acts, more learning opportunities and more chances of engagement with the children. Rest assured, we are still keeping safety of all attendees as our top priority, and if you see anything we could improve upon, please let us know.

We are still striving for our goal for the festival to be inclusive to all children of Saskatchewan, and we could always use the help. If you are interested in helping out the festival, you could do so in two ways.

Consider donating to our Fund-a-Class program, which helps classrooms of children in need cover any monetary hurdles with attending the festival (including transportation and ticket costs). You could always donate your time to the Children’s Festival and join me in volunteering. We have a great group of crewmembers, performers and other volunteers, and it is a rewarding experience to work with such great people. We always need people who are great with children, know other languages including sign language, have volunteered/worked in large productions/festivals, and who bring great excitement to share with everyone. For each option to help, donating to the Fund-a-Class program and volunteering at the festival, please find the links on our website to learn more.

Throughout their storied career, Splash’N Boots have created a global community dedicated to making every child feel seen, heard, and loved for exactly who they are.

Splash’N Boots are a beloved Canadian children’s music duo consisting of Nick Adams (Splash) and Taes Leavitt (Boots). With 20 years of experience, Splash’N Boots have become a household name, creating music and concert experiences that bring happiness and joy to children of all ages.

On television, they have appeared daily in over 8.5 million homes across Canada with their number one TV show on Treehouse TV and Disney Jr. Canada and recently wrote and produced an episode for Sesame Street. Splash’N Boots believe in a world where music can be enjoyed across all generations and have recently collaborated with Alice Cooper, Brett Kissel, Johnny Reid, Alan Doyle, Simon Ward of The Strumbellas and The Wiggles, and Sharon and Bram. Terrance Littletent is from the Kawacatoose Cree Nation and was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Much of his traditional teachings were inherited through his family and elders, singers and dancers, storytellers, and academics. Terrance is an accomplished Grass and Hoop Dancer who has traveled across Canada, the United States, and overseas, sharing his gift of song, dance, and narrative, in a humble way. As an educator, producer, and performer, Terrance continues to find ways to bridge traditional and contemporary dance and music styles.

Masabo Music; dance; building cultural harmony.

Their energetic performance features music, dance, and storytelling from the Senoufo tribe in northern Ivory Coast.

These pieces are brought to life, in English as well as French and other African dialects, with audience participation by getting people up out of their seats and onto the stage to feel the rhythm.

Aaron Nigel Smith is a Grammy® Nominated musician and Billboard #1 recording artist who has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, Winnipeg Folk Fest, Lollapalooza, and Pickathon, and performed throughout South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. He was also a featured musical guest and composer for the Emmy Award winning PBS Kids show Between the Lions in 2008.

BIG TOP TENT The “nearly world-famous” ™ DuffleBag Theatre has been performing since 1992 starting at the London International Children’s Festival, in London, Ontario, Canada. Now based in Toronto, DuffleBag performs over 600 shows a year, across Canada, the U.S., and internationally. All of our shows are performed with the same sense of fun, innovation, and participation that audiences (nearly) the world over have come to expect.

Upon his arrival in Paris, D’Artagnan gets into trouble with Porthos, Aramis, and Athos, the very Musketeers he wants to join! When he stumbles upon Cardinal Richelieu’s secret plot to take the throne, only Constance, the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, can help him save the King and stop the dastardly plot once and for all!

But when an adventurous young boy offers to fly her to Neverland where she can stay young forever, Wendy is catapulted into an adventure filled with magic pixies, charming pirates, and talking trees! As Peter Pan battles his arch-nemesis Captain Hook in DuffleBag Theatre’s fun version of J.M. Barrie’s beloved classic, even grown-ups will feel like kids again!

Les Vielillards Join puppeteers, Colin St-Cyr Duhamel and Sandra Turgeon, as an elderly couple rowing their tiny boat around, looking for the perfect spot to have a picnic.

Intriguing at first, then compelling and heartwarming, this roaming show combines mask, puppet theatre, and a pinch of nostalgia.

Aytahn Ross: City Worker The City Worker cleans, fixes, and maintains any environment he’s in with a fervour that is hilarious. His dedication to his job is admirable. His skills are ridiculous. Whether he’s vacuuming the lawn or dusting a single leaf, he’s always focused on perfection.

The City Worker is a contemporary clown that both amuses and confuses audiences with hilarious antics that are obvious to some and inconspicuous to others. By adapting and modifying mundane everyday activities, Ross turns simple acts of cleaning into hilarious satire as well as powerful commentaries on society.

Captain Carnegie Captain Carnegie is a jolly, boisterous pirate who has been stranded. He loves to be entertained and will pay you in “treasure” to entertain him. Will it be a joke, riddle, or trick? You decide!

Matt Henry and His Giant Bubble Show Watch a humble mixture of soap and water come alive in the hands of a master bubble artist while preparing for a hands-on encounter. Be surrounded by a swarm of bubbles, flocks of bubbles, giant bubbles, square bubbles, dragon bubbles, and donut bubbles in a performance guaranteed to delight kids of all ages!

Mona the Monarch Butterfly Mona is a stunning creature! She stands over 8 feet tall and her wingspan spreads another 5 feet! Every spring season she travels home to Canada, after migrating over 3,000 miles south, from the cold winter months. She is very excited to be landing at this year’s festival and can’t wait to meet you all!

June 1st: 4th - 24-hour access (Multilingual: Plains Cree, Michif, French, and English) In December 2020, the Children’s Festival commissioned Krystle Pederson and Alexis Normand to create a theme song for the festival that reflects our programming: inclusive, multicultural, multi-lingual, and fun! With graphics created by one-mouse graphic design and animation footage created by Honey Cut Studios, and under the guidance of Elder Norman Fleury and Elder Sandra Lachance, we are thrilled to offer our theme song sung in Plains Cree, Michif, French, and English.

Dreamers Theatre; film; BIPOC history.

June 1st - 4th: 24-hour access (Bilingual: English & Spanish) From Childsplay Theatre in association with Teatro Bravo of Tempe, Arizona, this physically poetic adaptation of Yuyi Morales’ story tells the tale of the resilience, hope, and the courage it takes to find one’s voice when navigating a new place. Told through a blend of storytelling, toy theatre, collage, and video projections, this bilingual story moves back and forth between the world of the artist and the world of her story as she reveals and recalls how she (and her baby!) gained a foothold in a new country through a love of reading and established her voice as a storyteller.

RupLoops Music; active listening; cultural diversity June 1st - 4th: 24-hour access (Bilingual: English & Punjabi) RupLoops is an interactive, live looping performance, using vocal percussion, rhythmic rhymes, and an arsenal of eclectic instruments from around the globe. Known as the Human Radio, RupLoops’ show will take you on a journey of sound exploring anatomy, geography, and culture. With a mix of hip-hop and global sounds, RupLoops’ tunes into themes of home, identity, culture, justice, dignity, and celebration.

June 1st - 4th: 24-hour access From the Honolulu Theatre for Youth from Honolulu, Hawai’i, join Kapili at his new school as he learns about respecting and honoring people of different cultures through the stories of his classmates. This show explores ideas of stereotype and acceptance, and it features stories from the Pacific that celebrate the cultural traditions that connect us all. Filled with humor, music and movement, these songs, dances, and folktales not only teach about our past but provide valuable wisdom for growing up today and our collective future.

activities GameLand What’s more fun than games? Giant interactive games! Children can compete in a 70 ft monster obstacle course while working on memory formation, cognitive skills, and social skills.

Story Telling with White Buffalo Youth Lodge

YOUTH LODGE

Visit the White Buffalo Youth Lodge’s tipi to hear important histories, stories, and teachings shared by Elders from Treaties 2, 4, 6, and 8 lands.

Sensory Tent Created with love for neurodivergent

children, this wonderful hideaway from the excitement and noise of the festival is filled with tons of toys to keep your little one occupied but not overly stimulated.

Critters and Creatures Brush a miniature horse, cuddle

a bunny, take a selfie with an alpaca, or learn about goats.

This venue provides children with the opportunity to interact and learn about a variety of animals through free play and observation.

Old Time Rhythm And Dance Learn about rhythm

through old time song and dance with The Northern Lights Bluegrass And Old Time Music Society. This introductory-level workshop will be a half hour of circle-style old time dance and games that will teach children how to move their body to different rhythmic patterns.

Rainbow Tent From Drag Queen Storytime to inclusive performances full of colour and fun, this tent has it all!

DanceLand Head over to Dance Land for music, tumbling,

and of course—dancing! This interactive session will keep the kids moving as they learn new dance moves and tumbling tricks. Participants will increase strength and explore their motor skills all while learning something new and having fun.

Hedge Maze Our hedge maze is not only fun but also

stimulates children’s brains by using logic and systemic thinking as they find their way out while building confidence and teamwork.

Fossil Find This amazing venue allows children to dig for real fossils and learn about the historical treasures buried inside the earth!

Circus Arts This venue is a hands-on workshop for learning numerous circus skills including juggling, unicycling, stilt walking, poi, plate spinning, tight rope walking, rola bola, and more!

Seed Survivor From Seed to Flower! Learn how Nutrien is helping to feed a growing world. We are excited to announce that we have the full Nutrien “Seed Survivor” Mobile Classroom on the Festival grounds. With interactive and multimedia games, you can learn all about how soil, nutrients and seeds produce food and flowers for everyone.

Story Tent Working with the Saskatoon Public Library,

this venue features a variety of local readers and professional storytellers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Childhood Around the World Travel around the world right at the festival! This venue provides numerous cultural activities and youth performances that reflect Saskatchewan’s growing cultural diversity.

MuseumLand For curious and inquisitive little minds,

MuseumLand is filled with tons of educational activities supplied by our amazing community partners Parks Canada, Saskatchewan Archaeological Society, Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Western Development Museum, Wonderhub and Sci-Fi Science Camps.

KinderGarden This fun venue provides free play and STEM-based learning for our youngest patrons, featuring the Imagination Playground, the Weaving Wall, Sand Sensory Center, the Outdoor Balance, and other large-scale, educational toys.

Wowl S.T.E.A.M. Lab By integrating science, technology,

engineering, art, and math, Wowl S.T.E.A.M. Lab will present children with a variety of activities including the most explosive science experiences and the most creative art projects while learning to think from new perspectives and working together.

Robo-Hockey by IEEE Teaching coding and robotics concepts by allowing children to engage in a robot hockey game. There will be 4-6 wireless robots in the arena separated into two teams. Players will try and maneuver their robots within the play arena to score on the opposing team’s goal.

Momentum Martial Arts Give the kids a chance to burn off

Nourishing young minds Nutrien’s ever-popular Fossil Find is back again at the Nutrien Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan.

Young explorers can sift through material brought in from Nutrien’s phosphate operation in Aurora, North Carolina.

Roll up your sleeves and discover treasures like buried shells, coral, fish bones and shark teeth and learn how this ancient marine life becomes nourishment for the plants we grow today!

SERVICES ROCKFORD'S PICNIC PARK – Join us on our communal green space for a picnic with your friends, family, and classmates! This undeveloped slice of the festival park will remain open for those who wish to lay in the grass, watch the clouds blow by, and share a meal as a community.

Rain or Shine Tent – Enjoy lunch supplied by one of our fabulous

food trucks or simply find shade from the beautiful Saskatchewan sun in our Rain or Shine tent.

Change Tables – Change your child in a fully enclosed and private

area. This tent holds two classic changing tables as well as a 71” x 30” power operated change table with side rails for those with special needs.

Breastfeeding Tent – Breastfeed in a private area that houses two semi-reclining wingback chairs for your comfort.

Bike Valet – Our free bike valet allows you to attend the festival in an

ecological and cost-effective way, while knowing your bike is safe and secure.

First Aid/Lost & Found Tent – Located close to the festival’s main gate, this tent is a place for assistance if you need any help, as well as where you can locate your missing stuffed animal, water bottle, or sunscreen.

The Buddy Bench – Situated next to our First Aid/Lost & Found Tent,

the Buddy Bench is a place to relax, talk to a friend, or a meeting point for family members.

ATM – Bank machines will be located right outside both of the festival’s gates.

We are the support staff of Saskatoon Public Schools, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, and Prairie Spirit School Division.

We work daily to ensure the schools are operational for students, teachers, administrators, and the public. Our members' work is vital as part of the day-to-day function within the education system.
