The three-day tournament will take place from November 30-December 2 at the Memorial Arena in Dawson Creek. The tournament will see the top 16 teams in the province come together to vie for the title and will feature teams from Vancouver Island, the lower mainland, Okanagan, Kootenays, Western BC, and Northern BC. Tournament director Terri Spencer says the tournament will be structured as two days of round robin play followed by the championship round. It will not only include fantastic volleyball, but also an assortment of events for athletes and spectators including opening ceremonies, a themed banquet, a murder mystery event, and an awards ceremony. She added a tournament of this nature requires a ton of support. Conttinued on page A5

Dawson Creek to host ‘AAA’ Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships from the front “We anticipate requiring approximately 150 volunteers to fill an assortment of roles, from working the gate to keeping score to setting up courts in the arena. We are grateful to DCSS for providing student volunteers for numerous roles as well as administrative support and player of the game prizes.: In addition, the tournament is anticipated to cost in excess of $50,000. As our city does not have gym facilities with adequate roof height and seating, we were required to rent a larger venue. The City of Dawson Creek has agreed to allow the eventto

utilize the Memorial Arena, but it comes at a significant cost. There is specialized flooring to be installed over top of the ice, glass removal, and sport courts to be rented and shipped to Dawson Creek, all of which are costly. “We are graciously accepting sponsorship from local businesses who would like to support the event,” she says. For any person wishing to volunteer or sponsor the event, we ask that you contact Terri Spencer, Tournament Director, at ter_matt@live.com.

A patient care area is considered any area within a health care facility that residents, patients, and clients have access too. Examples of these areas are hallways, lobbies, contracted health

care facilities, and home and community care locations. Facility entrances will have ambassadors to support screening for symptoms of respiratory illnesses, ensuring people clean their hands before entering the building and handing out medical masks. Our readers are reminded that proof of vaccination is not required for entry. tbuck@ahnfsj.ca

Social media safety tips from the RCMP RCMP have issued safety tips for the community regarding the use of social media, in the same way they issue safety tips for distracted driving and fraud. “We spend a lot of time in schools speaking with children and youth about social media,” states Constable Mireille Haunts, Community Policing Officer. “We start with the grade three students, talking about general online safety and privacy. As the students get older, we start talking about topics like sexting

and sextortion, cyberbullying, and even human trafficking. It’s important that students learn about the potential risks involved when they are using social media.” Keep personal details shared online or in chats to a minimum. Remember everything online is instant, public, and permanent. Use the grandma rule: if you wouldn’t say it to grandma, don’t say it online. Set the platform’s privacy settings to limit the information

you broadcast on social media. Parents are also encouraged by the RCMP to talk with their children and youth about social media, while confirming what social media platforms they are currently using and making sure you are comfortable with them sharing information that way. Discussions should be had regarding what to do if they see or have done something that makes them feel uncomfortable.

The Drive Relative to Conditions campaign As temperatures begin to drop throughout the North Peace, the BC Highway Patrol reminds motorists in British Columbia to start preparing for the winter months. Autumn brings many changes as the days grow shorter and the leaves change colours, which reminds us that the winter’s cold is fast approaching, and vehicle preparations should be made such as appropriate tire maintenance.

Readers should also adapt their driving habits to accommodate slippery conditions such as frost, ice, and snow according to the BC Highway Patrol. Being prepared for the winter months in autumn can mitigate the risks for yourself and others on the road, by embracing the seasonal cycle with preparedness and foresight. Winter tires are recommended for the entire province, and are required between October 1 and April 30. “It is important to have winter tires, especially with

you can be seen from behind. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination while being mindful of slippery conditions at all times. Motorists are reminded to be extra vigilant of pedestrians and cyclists who can be unpredictable and not always clearly visible.

An autumn vehicle and driving habit preparedness checklist has been put together by the BC Highway Patrol to assist you: Have your vehicle serviced by a maintenance shop, making sure all your lights, signals, and brake lights are fully functional. Thoroughly clean your vehicle inside and out while considering the application of water repellent products to exterior glass. Replace old and dried windshield wipers, especially important for areas that receive a lot of wet snow and rain. Change your summer tires for winter ones, which will have a snowflake embossed on the sidewall. Mud and snow tires (M&S) are acceptable, however winter tires are suggested. Check the condition of your tires to make sure they are properly inflated and that they have sufficient tread depth. Clear all windows of fog, ice, and snow before heading out on the road. using the vehicles air conditioning and maintaining a comfortable temperature to prevent the windows from fogging up. Slowing down and avoid using the vehicles cruise control on slippery road surface. Driving under or adhering to the posted speed limit, especially in variable speed zones where speeds can change as the conditions deteriorate. Making sure the headlights are in the ON position, which ensures the taillights are on and

“We are quickly approaching the winter driving season when inclement weather can make driving on our roads more challenging,” says Chief Superintendent Holly Turton, OIC of BC Highway Patrol. “In order to do your part, motorists need to ensure they have appropriate winter tires, change their driving behaviour relative to road conditions, and adjust plans to allow for more time to arrive at a destination. If we all do our part, we can prevent crashes and make our highways safer together.”

PPID, also known as Cushing’s disease, is a common endocrine disorder in older horses. It affects the pituitary gland, leading to excessive production of certain hormones, particularly ACTH. Elevated ACTH levels can cause a variety of symptoms, including: 1. Abnormal Hair Coat: Horses with PPID often exhibit a long, curly coat that fails to shed properly, especially in spring. 2. Weight Loss and Muscle Wastage: Due to metabolic disturbances, affected horses may lose weight and muscle mass, especially over their topline. It can also cause abnormal fat deposition and a “pot-bellied”

appearance. 3. Increased Thirst and Urination: Excessive thirst and excessive urination are common signs. 4. Laminitis: PPID horses are more prone to laminitis, a painful condition that can result in the coffin bone within the hoof rotating towards the ground causing varying grades of lameness. This condition is serious may need to be managed simultaneously by your farrier and veterinarian. Early detection of PPID is crucial. If you notice any of these signs, consult your veterinarian for a thorough examination. Diagnosis involves blood tests to measure ACTH levels, enabling appropriate management through medication and dietary adjustments. Treatment of PPID involves both a combination of medication, called Pergolide, dietary adjustments to reduce weight and sugar intake and regular exercise.

Equine Metabolic Disease (EMD) EMD is often caused by obesity, where excess body fat leads to insulin resistance. Horses who develop EMD are often middle aged, however certain breeds are more predisposed, such as ponies, morgans, and Arabians, however, almost any breed can develop this. Recognizable signs include: 1. Obesity: Overweight horses, especially those with fat accumulation in specific areas like the crest of the neck, are at higher risk. 2. Laminitis: Just like PPID, horses with EMD are also susceptible to laminitis, which can be recurrent and severe. 3. Abnormal Fat Deposits: Unusual fat deposits, like fatty crests in the neck and fat around the tailhead, are common indicators. Talk to your veterinarian if you are concerned about EMD in your horse. Steps to diagnosis of EMD may include performing a physical exam, running a fasting blood insulin level, or monitoring clinically through lameness scores and performing xrays of the feet.

Management of EMD primarily focuses on weight control and dietary modifications. Regular exercise and a low-sugar, low-starch diet is crucial. Monitoring blood glucose and insulin levels can aid in managing the condition effectively. Prevention and Care 1. Regular Veterinary Check-ups: Schedule routine check-ups, especially for older horses, to detect early signs of PPID and EMD. 2. Balanced Nutrition: Provide a balanced diet tailored to your horse’s specific needs, considering age, activity level, and health condition. 3. Exercise: Regular exercise not only helps maintain a healthy weight but also promotes overall well-being. 4. Dental Care: Proper dental care ensures efficient chewing and digestion, contributing to overall health. 5. Environment: Create a low-stress environment, as stress can exacerbate symptoms of both PPID and EMD. Diagnosing EMD may include measuring insulin levels in a fasting blood sample, glucose tolerance testing and/or monitoring for laminitis and clinical signs. Managing EMD includes strict dietary control with low-carbohydrate forage and limited access to lush pasture as well as weight management through exercise and dietary adjustments. Medications, such as metformin (decreases glucose in the blood) or occasionally levothyroxine will be used to increase the horse’s metabolism in horses where dietary management isn’t enough to cause weight loss. Throughout treatment and weight loss your vet may recommend monitoring insulin levels and clinical signs. In conclusion, Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction and Equine Metabolic Disease are two prevalent conditions that can affect horses. Early recognition, diet, exercise, and preventive measures are vital to ensuring your horse’s health and longevity. Horse owners should work closely with their veterinarians to develop individualized care plans for affected horses, thus providing the best possible quality of life for their equine companions.

ARIES – MAR 21/APR 20 Aries, unless you are ready to take charge and spearhead an initiative for change, you may have to simply go with the flow this week. Think on it. TAURUS – APR 21/MAY 21 Ideas for creative projects keep popping up in your mind, Taurus. It’s just a matter of figuring out which avenue you want to explore and then finding the time to make it happen. GEMINI – MAY 22/JUN 21 Gemini, some shake-ups at work may leave you wondering how secure things will be for you moving forward. Start asking a few pointed questions. CANCER – JUN 22/JUL 22 Are you ready to take the plunge and make a big move in your career, Cancer? The stars are pointing you in that direction. It could be just the change you are looking for. LEO – JUL 23/AUG 23 In your mind you did something that was well within your rights, Leo. Others who were affected by your actions may not view it in entirely the same way. Revisit the situation. VIRGO – AUG 24/SEPT 22 Virgo, it is time to start making a solid plan for the future and not just dayby-day actions to squeak by. You are one cog in a wheel that needs to move along smoothly. LIBRA – SEPT 23/OCT 23 Libra, before you fire off an email or ask questions, gather as much information as you can. You want to be sure you have all of the facts before you start to dig a little deeper. SCORPIO – OCT 24/NOV 22 Your focus on finances has been intense of late, Scorpio. While you have been doing your best to balance the budget, expenses seem to keep growing. Try other options. SAGITTARIUS – NOV 23/DEC 21 Sagittarius, even though you have been instrumental in your involvement with a particular situation, there is nothing much more you can do this week. Let it rest for now. CAPRICORN – DEC 22/JAN 20 Capricorn, the way you are going about things is entirely in your best interest without much consideration for others. This can be dangerous, especially when you need a hand. AQUARIUS – JAN 21/FEB 18 Aquarius, while you have been diligent with trying to get ahead at work, right now things are not falling into place. Consider whether this may be the time to find someplace new. PISCES – FEB 19/MAR 20 Keep all of your options open this week, Pisces. Even if you do not have plans right now, something may pop up unexpectedly that is right what you need at the moment.
