NLC students building home from start to finish

NLC students are building a home from start to finish on 116th Avenue.

Students, faculty, administration and more were on hand last Monday morning in Dawson Creek for a ground-breaking at the new site.

The house is part of the Enhanced Carpentry program at the college. College president Todd Bondaroff was on hand Monday morning to speak to the program and project.

“Our last build on 96th Avenue was a traditional build that exceeded requirements which was a testament to the planning and methods the students used,” said Bondaroff.

He added the new build is taking a different approach. It is a structured insulated panel or SIP build which will introduce new technology and methods that will far exceed the BC Energy Step Code.

“Every year we have an Enhanced Carpentry Foundation program running, and we add a home a year to our community,” he added.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

RCMP Street Crew Units have focused their energy on targeting individuals involved in property crime throughout the Prince George and surrounding northern community.

An investigation this summer helped to recover a stolen Tige boat, three stolen motorcycles and four stolen ATVs. The total value of the recovered property was approximately $365,000.

During last month and this month, Street Crew Unit officers

targeted a known property crime offender and executed a search warrant on their property - totalling over $100,000 in recovered property.

Where possible, the items that have been recovered by our investigators have been returned to the rightful owners or to the businesses where they were stolen from originally, states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

Police presence at Mile Zero trailer park

RCMP: a reminder for business owners

RCMP reminds business owners to be mindful of crime prevention practices, and they have some advice for business owners:

Install motion sensor lights and keep indoor lights on at all times. Invest in good quality video cameras. Install an alarm system. Keep windows clear of stickers and posters • Keep valuables away from windows and install roll shutters or bars on your windows • Make sure that preventative measures are well maintained, such as fences.

RCMP note tying to incorporate all of these crime preventatives at once can be costly.

“Make sure to budget for safety and crime prevention if you’re just starting out in your business venture, or implement them over time, based on priority. Investing in quality preventative measures, such as sturdy locks and quality cameras, can make a difference in preventing theft and identifying criminals,” says officials

For more tips and

information, Business Security brochures are available for free at all RCMP Detachments across the province.

RCMP encourages the public and business owners to report any suspicious activity to police. If you see a crime in progress, dial 911. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Wyatt Bondaroff: 2023 Canadian High School steer wrestling champ

Did you know Dawson Creek’s Wyatt Bondaroff is the 2023 Canadian high School rodeo steer wrestling champion? True story.

One could say it’s in the jeans. Or genes. Or good stock. Wyatt first caught the rodeo bug right at home with father Todd around the farm. Team roping and calf roping

was what got me interested when I was really young,” he says.

“Around grade eight it became more serious for me and I started competing and dedicating to practise more and seeing better results in events.”

His first year on the tea, he’s been on a horse every day since childhood. He was riding a familiar animal during the steer wrestling win – Pouce Coupe’s Clayton Moore’s horse – Huck.

Bondaroff picked up the buckle last month in Brandon, MB during the 2023 Canadian High School Finals is held at the Keystone Centre. The top 5 Junior High and the top 6 High School cowboys in Canada are invited to compete in events.

Bondaroff and the rest of the NLC cowboys were ready this past weekend for the two-day intercollegiate rodeo held in Dawson Creek at the Lakota Centre Sept. 30 and October 1.

Among other wise sayings resembling the Proverbs recorded in Scripture, Marcus Aurelius, second century Stoic philosopher-emperor of the Roman empire, advised his people that the soul is tinctured by the thoughts.

Some questions: Who oversees our minds? Where can we find truth in this world of fact and fiction, truth and anti-truth? Who controls the sources of information? How can I sort the information that I do get?

I accept that; it would be helpful if you did, too. Indeed, I accept that you may take a seriously different approach to life than I take. That’s OK and, in my worldview, you have a legitimate right to the way you see things. And we can be neighbors if you like.

Though sent from his Roman dungeon, Paul’s letter to his friends in Philippi, Northern Greece, preserved for 2000 years in Scripture, is a letter of rejoicing indicating a mind at peace with himself and his environment. Not a word of criticism of his prison guards, the poor and scanty food, the damp conditions, the uncomfortable sleep!

Not a complaint is recorded!

Just rejoicing!

No doubt this attitude has something to do with his counsel to his friends:

But I will teach that all human beings were created in the image of God and are valuable in His sight and that all of us, that’s all of us including the worst and best of us without exception, have sinned and continue to come short of our Creator’s ideal.

Without exception, we are all responsible for the death of our Creator.

In whatever time remains for me on this dizzying earth, I will attempt to be in charge of my own mind, guarding as carefully as I can the input so that the output allows me to live in peace with my fellowtravellers.

City of Dawson Creek talks capital projects

This week the City of Dawson Creek released an update on 2023 capital projects. Capital Projects are funded through the City of Dawson Creek Capital Budget and any grant the City receives for each project.

City officials expect road work contracts and paving projects begin to wrap up as we head into October – while improvements have been made to both Kin Park Ball Diamonds, as well as Diamond 1 at Harry Morrow.

This includes new dugout roofing, berm removal, infield top dressing, and new sod replacement. The old deteriorated bleachers are being removed at ball diamonds Kin 1 and Kin 2, with new bleachers purchased and ready to be installed soon.

There is a move afoot to improve the entrance accessibility of the Dawson Creek Art Gallery Entrance The project is being led by an experienced architect and a team of engineers. Work will likely begin in late winter of 2023 or early spring of 2024.

Contractors broke ground at both playground sites earlier this month and playground equipment is being installed at both Kin Park and Old Rotary Lake Area Playgrounds.

When it comes to road work, streetlights, and utilities, the contract was awarded for the 8th Street Culvert Crossing north of Alaska Avenue with work to be completed this fall. It is anticipated to be completed on a weekend to avoid major traffic impacts.

are nearly complete. The last main items include paving, driveways, and landscaping. Street lighting is expected for late this month.

Deep utilities on sanitary replacement along 106th Avenue from 6th Street to 8th Street have been completed. Concrete was poured and paving is scheduled for the coming weeks.

Delays in correspondence and design considerations around water looping on 112th Avenue from 7th Street to 8th Street have pushed back the project

tendering to 2024. This project will require a new right of way for water mains along the north flank of Safeway.

Should an agreement not be met with the property owner, the sidewalk will be omitted, and the water main loop will be delayed.

The water main extension for the arena was awarded to a contractor and will be completed this fall.

Camarlo Phase 2 –Construction for this project began early May, approximately two weeks ahead of schedule.

The project is complete with minor deficiencies. Streetlights are in place and ready for hookup.

An Oct. 1 winter tire reminder

Fall’s arrival in the Peace region is a seasonal reminder that the law for winter tires on many provincial highways starts October 1.

Driving for work or pleasure can be dangerous, no matter how much experience you have,” says Trace Acres, Program Director for Road Safety at Work and spokesperson for the 15th annual Shift into Winter campaign in a statement. “Conditions can change quickly and you need to prepare now to help keep yourself and your passengers safe.”

Designated highways in the region require winter tires or chains from October 1 to April 30, including mountain passes and rural routes in high snowfall areas. This includes Highways 77, 97, 29, 2 and 52.

The number of crashes caused by driving too fast for conditions doubles at this time of year in B.C.

Winter tires can help reduce the risk. They provide better traction and stopping distances when temperatures drop below 7C. “They can’t help you if you don’t

have them on your vehicle before poor weather arrives, though,” Acres says. “Waiting until rain, ice, or snow hits is too late.”

Acres adds drivers also need to make adjustments when behind the wheel.

“Even if you’re only on the road for a few minutes, you need to prepare for winter driving hazards,” Acres says. “When conditions are treacherous, it’s better to postpone your trip, if you can. Your family would rather have you safe at home than have you hurt in a crash.”

Some trips aren’t easily avoided. Many people drive while working, for example. They may travel to see clients, go between work sites, or make deliveries. In all cases, they’re at risk. Nearly 40% of all work-related crashes in B.C. resulting in injury and time off the job occur from November to February, according to WorkSafeBC statistics.

Fire extinguisher safety

A fire extinguisher is a vital safety device that can help suppress small fires before they escalate into dangerous blazes. This Fire Prevention Week, which takes place from October 8 to 14, 2023, brush up on your fire preparedness knowledge with this brief guide to fire extinguishers.

Firstly, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the different types of fire extinguishers and their suitable applications:

• Class A fire extinguishers are suitable for ordinary combustibles like wood and paper

• Class B extinguishers are suitable for flammable liquids and gases

• Class C extinguishers are intended

for use on fires involving appliances, motors and tools

• Class D extinguishers are designed for use on combustible metals

• Class K extinguishers are suitable for kitchen fires

You can also find multipurpose fire extinguishers that are suitable for more than one class, like A-B, B-C or A-B-C.

Fire extinguishers must be kept in prominent, easily accessible locations like mounted to a wall. Ideally, you should have a portable fire extinguisher on every floor of your home, especially near potential fire hazards like kitchens, garages and workshops.

The PASS technique

In the event of a fire, remember the PASS acronym:

• Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher upright and pull the pin to break the tamper seal.

• Aim low. Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire.

• Squeeze the lever. Firmly squeeze the lever to discharge the extinguishing agent.

• Sweep side to side. Sweep the nozzle or hose from side to side, covering the base of the fire until it’s completely extinguished.

By understanding how to properly use and store a fire extinguisher, you can enhance fire safety in your home.

Dawson Creek and District Hospital

Foundation work is starting to begin in the giant hole between the existing hospital and Northern Lights College.

Earlier this month the mud slabs were poured for one of the crane bases and a few of the foundations on the southwest corner of the building footprint.

The new building will be approximately 24,500 square metres (263,000 square feet) and have 70 beds, an increase of 24. The emergency department is also doubling in size. Treatment spaces are

increasing from 10 to 15.

The facility will continue to provide a range of surgical services, as well as chemotherapy, ambulatory care, radiology, clinical support and pharmacy services.

A pair of large tower cranes are expected to be installed on site to continue building the concrete portions of the building - expected to be fully operational in 2027.

The Dawson Creek Arts & Wellness Fund!

The Dawson Creek Arts & Wellness Fund is a unique to Mile Zero by funding opportunities for children and youth in need, birth to 24 years old, looking to participate in artistic and wellness activities within DC and area.

“The groups is about filling gaps and we’d like to bring some more awareness into schools and the community,” says vice president with the non-profit, Lynnsy Noll.

The DC Arts & Wellness Fund does not replace KidSport Dawson Creek or the Canadian Tire Jump Start Program which continue to make funds available for sport participation.

“It is funding to provide access and to foster wellbeing and creativity in youth,” adds Noll.

The DC Arts & Wellness Fund opens up new doors by making funding, up to $250, available so that children and youth can experience established arts and wellness programming such as (but not limited to): arts programs, craft programs, drama and music classes, yoga, meditation, or wellness classes. The fund may also consider equipment, materials and transit costs. “Because we know that children in surrounding communities need this as much as those in town.”

Application forms can be picked up at KPAC, DC Art Gallery, or from their website: dcartsandwellness.ca.

You can also connect with them on their social media and email: dcartswellness@gmail. com

ANSWER:

Bourque, Joseph (Joe) Cleophas

1939 – 2023

Robert ‘Bruce’ Woodley

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bruce Woodley, a resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
