DC and District Hospital: construction work begins

Rob Brown

Editor Construction has begun on the Dawson Creek and District Hospital.

The new building will be approximately 24,500 square metres (263,000 square feet) and have 70 beds, an increase of 24. The

emergency department is also doubling in size. Treatment spaces are increasing from 10 to 15. The facility will continue to provide a range of surgical services, as well as chemotherapy, ambulatory care, radiology, clinical support and pharmacy services.

There will also be space for a laboratory, diagnostic imaging, as well as physical rehabilitation. New parents and families will be supported by a perinatal unit, including labour, delivery, recovery and post-partum rooms, and a nursery. Mentalhealth service delivery will be brought up to

modern standards with a new inpatient suite and an increase of beds from 15 to 18.

Health Minister Adrian Dix was in Dawson Creek in late June to announce the project’s greenlight. see more on page A3!

The Greeks of antiquity have left us a remarkable account of how a good world became evil that bears an astonishing resemblance to the account of the fall of humanity recorded in Hebrew Scripture.

A woman lets curiosity overpower sense and disobeys a clear instruction.

We are struggling to live and ultimately are dying in 2023 with the results of that choice.

(3-4 feet tall), to pyxis, a box that the artists have depicted as shoe-box size, thus greatly diminishing the evil that would be set free.

Briefly, this is the Pandora myth, forms of which predate Hesiod by generations: Pandora was put in charge of a large, sealed pithos and ordered never to open it. One day, overcome by curiosity, Pandora ventures to remove the lid, but before she can ever look inside, all the evil of which unregenerate humanity is now capable escapes into the world.

REGIONAL MANAGER William Julian wj@ahnfsj.ca

Greek poet Hesiod’s (c700 BC), Works and Days, in which the myth of Pandora and the box is told, may have been influenced by Eastern wisdom literature from the Sumerian, Egyptian, and Hebrew traditions.

This cross-fertilization of ideas should not surprise modern readers given the volume of trade and commerce carried on among the nations of the period.

Przybylski horizon@dcdn.ca 250-784-4319

Horrified, Pandora slams the lid shut, forever locking in Hope that humanity might be able to overcome evil.

Now, without Hope, humanity is at the mercy of evil.

hope, as did Adam and Eve, but with one lifealtering exception. The Creator, not wishing them to perish, provided a Way of escape for all who choose to take the Way. But that’s another story.

So, let’s bring the lesson of Pandora and Adam and Eve home to ourselves and consider some of the choices and the unintended consequences of modern-day society.

Apparently, our presentday idea of Pandora’s box is not quite what Hesiod put in writing. In the 16th Century, Greek and Latin scholar, Erasmus, mistranslated the Greek pithos, a large storage jar

In the tradition handed down to us in the Holy Bible, Adam and Eve, created perfect and upright and given freedom to choose, used that freedom to separate from their Maker, their source of life, and align with the destroyer, the source of all evil, and the father of lies.

Pandora left us with no

The point I am making is the same in each tradition: Pandora made a choice with terrible, but unintended consequences; Eve and Adam made a choice with terrible but unintended consequences. Pandora was warned that she should never open the pithos; Eve and Adam were warned of the consequences of eating the one forbidden fruit in the Garden.

And we are daily experiencing the consequences, unintended though they were.

I wrote this far in my rant yesterday when the day I called tomorrow is today and I must take up the cause again.

Read on for some highly troubling consequences, intended or otherwise, of choices our government has made on our behalf. And because we choose our government, these are our choices.

Nichols: from previous

One “unintended” consequence of Bill C18 has just hit me between the eyes, and it hurts. I also feel outrage at the injustice of a steamrolling government crushing long-held liberties, showing no respect for mature adults, electors, obviously supposing that we cannot sort out truth and fiction ourselves.

Having just received a news item from south of 49, I see, clearly, right in the middle, this unflinching statement: “In response to Canadian government legislation, news content cannot be shared in Canada.” Other than that, the item is totally dead to any of the usual manipulative measures one can use on a device.

Totally dead!

Unreadable!

Unintended?

If so, the legislation can be fixed by a prompt reversal – like right now.

And if it is not promptly reversed or suitably amended in some other way to allow free and unrestricted access to news, to the uncluttered exchange of ideas and information essential for a functional democracy, then we will assume that the consequence was intended.

It’s a sad commentary on the direction our once-free country

is taking. But it is a direction we could have anticipated as early as November, 2013, before Mr. Trudeau took office as PM. It’s a consequence of either our apathy or our deliberate choice.

When asked the nature of the government he favored, Mr. Trudeau frankly admitted that he admired the “basic dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party” above democracy.

And now we have it.

At least we are a long way down the road toward totalitarian control.

Now think back over the years of Mr. Trudeau’s watch. What decisions were made, or not made, the “unintended” consequences of which are now being played out?

But don’t lay the blame at the feet of one mere mortal.

We, the people elected our government and now we are experiencing the consequences of the choice we made, intended or otherwise.

Happily, each day is bringing us another choice closer.

Choose well, we will live or die with the consequences.

Labour Day: a short history

North Americans celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday of September. This is a public holiday that traditionally marks the return to school for all types of students after their summer vacations. While labour disputes between millionaire athletes and millionaire owners dominate the headlines these days, history offers a completely different perspective on an era where workers had to fight hard to limit their workdays to less than twelve hours a day!

In honour of the workers movement, Labour Day was introduced in Canada in 1872, a year when marches and gatherings were held in Ottawa and Toronto. In Europe, the festivities of May Day have been combined with

Labour Day celebrations since 1889. This spring festival was celebrated for some time in Canada, but the desire for a long weekend at the end of the summer led Parliament to proclaim the fall Labour Day in 1894. The first Labour Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York. An initiative of the Central Labor Union, the idea was quickly adopted by other union organizations and, in 1885, was celebrated in many industrial centres. New York City granted the first official recognition of this day by municipal ordinances in 1885 and 1886, and they were integrated into the laws of New York State shortly thereafter.

Citizens on Patrol and Rural Crime team up!

Citizens on Patrol and Rural Crime Watch teamed up for the Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Exhibition week.

COP volunteers were on hand to talk about the program to the interested community members.

“The participation helped COP to increase the visibility in the community and also increased the awareness about the program,” say representatives.

COP are a dedicated group of volunteers serving the City of

Dawson Creek, and encourages dedicated community volunteers to be of assistance by observing possible criminal activity in designated areas.

“By being an extra set of ‘eyes and ears’ the Patrol is able to assist in the deterrence of crime in this community. COP is not designed to replace the local police but allows police to direct their focus on other areas of potential crime and criminal activity.”

Money for Art Gallery

The Dawson Creek Art Gallery and more got a cut of a recent $950K funding approval from Northern Development board of directors for projects throughout Northern BC

Just over a quarter million dollars - $264,160 was approved for the City of Dawson Creek through the Cultural Infrastructure program to upgrade the entrance of the Dawson Creek Art Gallery.

The current entrance does not meet minimum accessibility regulations and does not offer persons with disabilities an opportunity to enter the gallery without assistance from gallery staff – and the new work will remove barriers for persons with disabilities to utilize the facility and provide a safe, free environment that everyone can access regardless of their physical limitations.

Art Gallery ED Duncan Malkinson confirmed the project is out to tender.

It was a double-win for Dawson Creek as $65,891 was also approved for the City of Dawson through the Main Street Revitalization Capital program for the lighting of city signs.

Dawson Creek Mayor Darcy Dober said NDIT remains huge

at helping communities achieve economic development, tourism initiatives and other goals.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of David Lesley Comer, a longtime resident of Tomslake, British Columbia, on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the age of 60 years.

David Lesley Comer was born December 23, 1962, in Salida, Colorado. Known as Dave to all who knew and loved him.

Dave moved to Tomslake, in July of 1971 at 7 years old with his family, and lived in Tomslake his entire life afterwards. His days in Colorado and Tomslake shaped him into the man that we all knew and loved. Dave loved trucks, especially Macks, just like his dad and his sons. Dave loved being behind the wheel – he did not leave a stone unturned in the trucking industry. If it could be pulled behind a truck, Dave did it.

When Dave met Mary, his life changed. He loved Mary. From the beginning of their courtship, Dave knew he wanted to marry her. This past May, Mary and Dave celebrated 40 years together. Dave was a devoted husband and proud father.

Today, there is more emphasis put on who we are and what we accomplish. Dave was the epitome of how great and unselfish it is to put those in your family first. He always put his family first. Whether it was taking one of his kids with him in the truck, driving down to a graduation in the states, or attending every family reunion he could, Dave wanted to be there for his family.

Dave was grateful to spend the last few years in the presence of his friends and family, and witness his family grow further. Although we wish that Dave had more time, we will all keep Dave in our hearts and memories, telling stories about him to each other and to our grandchildren.

Dave is survived by His loving wife Mary; children DJ (Anna), Matthew (Lenore Boudreau), Samantha (Jessie); grandchildren Yulamay, Eloise, Grantley, Isabelle; siblings Debbie (Bill), Pat (Tony), Theresea (Ron); many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Dave was predeceased by his parents Alice and Les Comer; and brother Larry Comer.

A Celebration of Life for David was held on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at 12:00pm at the Tomslake Community Centre, Tomslake, British Columbia. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Dave to the Shine Through the Rain Foundation, 1211 Gorham St Unit 12, Newmarket, ON, L3Y 8Y3.

Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home and Crematorium.
