Northern Health warns there has been an increase in overdoses in Dawson Creek linked to a blue colored drug sold as “down.”

This drug causes sudden overdose and memory loss, this happens when the drug is smoked and injected.

Northern Health safety advice: Get overdose prevention, recognition, and response training; carry naloxone

Try

If you plan to use alone, use the Lifeguard or BeSafe app available free on the app store or on Toward the Heart website.

Know your tolerance. If you are sick or had a time of abstinence or reduced use, use much less.

When possible, avoid mixing drugs or mixing drugs with alcohol.

Test a small amount first, start low and go slow.

Use in an Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) if possible (see locations listed below) Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number right away if someone overdoses.

Dawson Creek proclaims June as Filipino Heritage Month

The City of Dawson Creek has proclaimed June as Filipino Heritage Month. The proclamation was made during the city’s June 12 council meeting.

A large delegation from the Filipino community met with Mayor Darcy Dober and council to make the proclamation.

Dober said he was honoured to host the delegation and reflected on the values of fun, culture, and family held by many Filipino residents.

“Being fairly close to some of the Filipino community, and you know, friends to some - it’s very clear that is a very big part of the culture, and that’s what this council is really about this term,” he said. “Bridging those communication gaps in our community and really just being more about who we are as a community, and growing.”

Filipino associations and societies were first established in 2010, noted the proclamation, made in the spirit of Bayanihan (helping one another achieve a goal).

Flood and fire, two scourges that have plagued humanity since the beginning of time are still with us and we haven’t learned a whole lot about how to deal with them. Running when they approach seems to help in the short term, but longterm solutions are more of a hope-to-maybe-somedayif-ever variety.

To be sure, our dear leaders have some gassy ideas about how to reduce the threats, but I think they are pipe dreams.

Of course, we can avoid building in the floodplain but with the short streams out of the mountains it is not always easy to identify a floodplain. And those streams are quick to change directions when an obstacle like a fallen tree diverts the flow.

Periodic dredging and clearing of other impediments to free flow of water in some streams when their beds are dry, and the fish have retreated to the river, would be a major asset in preventing serious overflow, but permission of Fish and Wildlife is hard to come by.

warn us that we can expect these troubled times to become more troubled, more chaotic, more angry, more dangerous as time moves on.

overwhelm us because He is with us.

Our Creator Father says, “Do not be afraid for I am with you” (Isaiah 43:1-5). Awesome! Like the three young men in Nebuchadnezzar’s seventimes heated furnace.

And if God is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?

God is for us!

Even so, I am quite aware that some readers who might have made it this far in their reading do not believe in a Creator God who takes an interest in our daily affairs. A God who knows when we run from the flames or struggle out of the muddy water. And cares.

Protecting fish habitat is the ostensible reason. But anyone who has observed a paste,g torrent in one of these mountain drainage beds will know that any fish sad enough to be caught in the flood would be reduced to paste and the habitat rendered unrecognizable. Oh, well.

Fire presents a different set of risks. Those of us who are surrounded by trees must be prepared to take defensive measures before being threatened by fire.

But unless we are inclined to move to the asphalt jungle and face a whole different set of challenges, we’ll hang out where we are and be thankful for mercies.

We are living in troubled times, and the Scriptures

Scripture also tells us multiple times and in various ways not to be afraid; fear not, the God who created this earth and placed us on it has a plan for fixing the mess we have made of His beautiful and sustainable planet. He knows us intimately, our fears, our dreams, our ambitions, and the number of hairs on our heads. He has called us by name, and we are His possession. This may be small comfort as you watch your life’s work with everything you prize float down the river or go up in smoke. However, given the uncertainty of the times and of the world economies, it might be the best comfort you could ask for.

What we are seeing, feeling, experiencing is evil and the result of evil. In the beginning, the Creator put the human race, in its purity and innocence, in charge of running this earth. He also gave us freedom to choose

to whom we would report. Sadly, tragically, humanity opted to believe the destroyer, the devil in disguise, and turned over the keys of our paradisal estate and the management of the earth to him.

And we see the result in fire, flood, fearful storms, earthquakes, land slides, and other “natural” evils increasing in frequency and intensity – a sign explicitly stated in Holy Scripture that the end of this present age is approaching, to be superseded by the Age to come.

It may feel like the murky waters of this flood of evil, “natural” and human generated, will wash over us, that the searing heat of uncontrolled human passion will crisp our minds, but we have our Father’s promise to be with us.

The fires of evil may threaten to incinerate our mortal frames. The flood of societal dissolution may be about to engulf us, but God assures us that when we walk through the flames we will not be burned; when we pass through the waters, they will not

But we do, and He is actively working behind the scenes to rescue us from the results of the bad choices we and our ancestors made and that we continue to make.

As free moral agents, responsible for our own decisions, we can turn down His invitation to life. Unlike our governments, He will not order us out of harm’s way.

In the meantime, we must contend with the vicissitudes of life as we encounter them and take the good with the bad.

But there is no law, civic or natural, that require us to take the bad sitting down. Some of the bad stuff happening out there must be resisted. Some of it must be ferreted out. We have been endowed with minds that can reason and we have to come to our own conclusions about the fare we are handed daily in multiple doses.

So, think clearly, keep your hands on the wheel, and look way ahead,

The Flash: the DC multi-verse

The Flash is very much like Source Code or Edge of Tomorrow – with Barry Allen(s) on reset and starting over, and over, and over again, using their speed to move through time –and universes within the DC universe.

So DC’s first real crack at a multi-verse film is here – where there are Supermans going back to the day of Reeve and Reeves, and other super-cagey versions of the Man of Steel.

has a knock on, butterfly effect on his world and others. Soon he is reaching out to a Batman older than Affleck – Michael Keaton. Let’s get nuts.

Of course there are missed chances to have some of these superheroes and actor (either real or CGI) interacting with each other – beyond just Barry Allen.

When you realize the calibre of actors who have appears in DC films – a scene with Nicholson talking to Brando and Schwarzenegger or Hackman – or Christopher Reeve talking with Adam West - anything is possible.

The plot centres around Barry Allen wanting to save his mother. This of course has a knock on effect on his universe as well as others. He saves his mother bay simply putting a can of tomato sauce in her shopping cart. This

A newly formed Flash and Batman look for this world’s Kryptonian – and with General Zod appearing in Barry Allen’s world – this plot takes place at the same time as Man of Steel and events of Batman V. Superman.

What this does is whet the appetite for a Tim Burton return to the Dark Knight, or at least the DC Universe.

The Flash runs into the Creek this week.

DC powerlifter presses to a third place at provincials

Dawson Creek powerlifter Aljohn Macam took 3rd place in his class at the Alberta Powerlifting Union Provincials 2023 in Calgary on June 10.

Lifters are required to record a certain total (weight) at a local meet to qualify for Provincials, which Macam was able to do during his second powerlifting meet last year. The APUP meet was Macam’s fourth competition to date.

“I started powerlifting three years ago when a couple of friends influenced me to start going to the gym and one of them later on suggested I try powerlifting,” says Macam.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the sport of powerlifting has

grown immensely and evidence of that is in the record number of athletes competing in this year’s Alberta Provincials.

Macam’s total was 570 KG. Squat of 215 KG, Bench Press of 120 KG and Deadlift of 235 KG.

“We were told over 200 athletes were going to be competing.”

“Powerlifting and competing has helped me both mentally and physically. I developed skills and habits I didn’t think I was capable of 5 years ago. I’m also fortunate to be surrounded by supportive family and friends. I also wouldn’t be able to train and compete at this level without the support of local businesses that support athletes like me,” he adds.

Honing preps a rehab summer, for busy fall

Left just out of the medal rounds last October at the World Softball championships, Peace region’s Roxy Honing is prepping for another crack at the world this fall, and playing for Canada in 2024/25 at the national level.

“The idea this year is to rehab in the summer for the fall and going back to worlds again in Utah,” she says.

Honing traditionally plays for the United States in regular season play, then puts on the maple leaf to play for Canada at the National level. She plays for the the Lady Gray Jays when in Canada. West Coast United is Honing’s US team, based out of California, Redding.

Honing is adding something else to the national level, looking to represent Canada at next year’s worlds in both softball, and pickleball.

A great substitute for yeasted breads

Typically matzoh/matzah is substituted for other yeasted breads this time of year. One place matzoh really shines, though, is in matzoh balls for use in soups or side dishes. A dumpling of sorts, matzoh balls are tasty and filling, and ideal for meals anytime. Try this recipe for “Perfect Matzah Balls (Kneidlach)” courtesy of Chabad.org’s Kosher Cooking.

Perfect Matzah Balls (Kneidlach)

Yields 4 balls per each 1⁄4 cup of matzah meal (Meat, Pareve)

2 eggs, slightly beaten

2 tablespoons oil or chicken fat

2 tablespoons soup stock or water

1⁄2 cup matzah meal

1 teaspoon salt

1 quart of salted water or chicken soup, for cooking

Beat eggs slightly with fork. Add other ingredients, except matzah meal, and mix. Add matzah meal gradually until thick.

Stir. Refrigerate for 20 minutes in covered bowl.

Wet hands and form into balls. Drop into bubbling chicken soup or into a large wide pot into which 1 quart of water seasoned with 1 tablespoon salt has been added and has come to a boil. Cook for 30 minutes. PC234863
