The Do More Agriculture Foundation (Do More Ag) is thrilled to announce the launch of AgTalk powered by Togetherall. The peer support platform will be accessible across the entire Canadian agriculture industry. The platform provides a safe and anonymous space where anyone 16+ can connect, share, and receive support from a community of peers who relate to their unique experiences. With 24/7 bilingual clinical moderation, AgTalk, powered by Togetherall, ensures a secure environment for open discussions on mental health.
It can be challenging to acknowledge and
seek support for mental health needs. With these challenges in mind, BASF, RBC, and McCain Foundation have come together to support the foundation in launching AgTalk to address the specific mental health needs of Canadian producers.
“BASF is thrilled to support the development and launch of AgTalk as part of Do More Ag’s continued efforts to provide mental health support to Canadian farmers,” said Jonathan Sweat, Vice President at BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions. “Supporting farmers extends beyond the field. It’s important to
BASF that we’re supporting farmers – and those who work in the agricultural industry –in meaningful ways.”
AgTalk serves as a valuable resource that acknowledges and provides support through various stages of one’s mental health journey.
“In recent years, our agriculture communities have been exposed to economic volatility and stressful environmental conditions that have taken a toll on their mental health. Addressing our farmers’ emotional health and wellbeing is key to economic prosperity and the continued growth of the agriculture sector,” said Sue Noble, VP of Commercial Banking Strategy at RBC. “Our partnership with AgTalk is an important step in this direction, that’ll provide agriculture communities a safe and secure space to improve their mental health and wellbeing.”

The availability of plant disease risk assessment tools to guide farmers and the crop consultants they are working with is an important component of the fungicide decision process.
To help guide farmers and crop consultants with sclerotinia stem rot risk assessments a tool has been developed. Chris Manchur, Agronomy Specialist – Eastern Manitoba, Canola Council of Canada, has provided a short blurb that outlines the objectives and process for the sclerotinia risk assessment tool.
Sclerotinia Risk Assessment Tool – Beta-testers for the 2023 season:
In collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and SeedWorld Group, the Canola Council of Canada is developing a risk assessment tool to help growers make timely decisions on whether a foliar fungicide application is advised. For 2023, we are looking for beta-testers to use this tool and confirm whether a recommendation is accurate for that growing area. Our 2023 target is 100 fields surveyed across western Canada.
What would I need to do?
1) At fungicide decision time (early flowering), visit your test field and enter the following field information (multiple choice options): precipitation in the past two weeks, forecasted precipitation, plant density, years since last host crop, sclerotinia severity in last host crop, and presence of spore-producing apothecia in the field. Your risk score and spray recommendation based on these factors will be provided.
2) If spraying a fungicide, use the two marker flags provided by the CCC to leave an unsprayed check strip.
3) Revisit your test field at 30 –60% seed colour change and assess sclerotinia severity on 100 plants in both sprayed and unsprayed parts (if you le a check strip) on a 0-5 scale. In addition, collect sclerotia/infected stem pieces for AAFC to test fungicide resistance.
4) Collect your gift card upon completion! How do I sign up?
Beta-testers can sign up by contacting Chris Manchur, CCC Sclerotinia Lead, at manchurc@ canolacouncil.org.
Grasshoppers thrive in warm, dry conditions. The first adult two-striped grasshoppers of 2023 were reported in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan in the last 5 days, although the majority the grasshopper population are still nymphs. Signs of damage in the roadsides and field edges are being reported. Now is the time to scout for grasshoppers in your fields.
Diamondback moths develop rapidly when it is warm and their population densities can build up quickly with each generation. Like other insects, bertha armyworm development is also well ahead of schedule. Other green
caterpillars, like clover cutworm and alfalfa looper, might also be found in canola crops at this time of year. Correctly identifying green caterpillars is important to ensure the correct economic thresholds (where available) and management tactics are used.
This year could be an interesting year for wheat midge. Some areas have had sufficient rain to trigger the end of diapause and the completion of larval and pupal development, but crop staging is also widely variable. Scouting for wheat midge will be important in the next few weeks.
This week, the Insect of the Week featured the cereal leaf beetle, a pest of cereal crops. Next week, we will feature a very important natural enemy of cereal leaf beetle, the parasitoid Tetrastichus julis.
Remember, insect Monitoring Protocols containing information about in-field scouting as well as information about insect pest biology and identification.

“The long-term outlook for global sheep meat consumption is strong, due to economic development, growing populations and household income growth,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “As always there are several factors that go into that long-term outlook with Australia, New Zealand, China and the United States all playing key roles.”
Australia is the largest global market supplier with the country’s 2023 lamb production predicted to increase by 3.5% over 2022. The East Asian markets drive much of the demand for Australian sheep meat and the market continues to grow. Two new market agreements, the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement and the AustraliaIndia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, will fuel future growth. Australia may face some challenges, however, associated with market access and currency fluctuation risks that come with its dependence on overseas markets.
New Zealand is the second largest global sheep meat exporter, exporting over 90% of its sheep meat production. Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s mid-season update, March 2023, indicates that a fall in demand from China drove a decrease in sheep meat. The average value of lamb decreased 11% for the 2022-23 year and export volumes are forecast to be down 3%.
China has the world’s largest sheep flock (316 million head in 2021) and accounts for one third of global sheep meat production. However, China remains a net importer. Sheep meat accounts for a small portion of dietary protein in China but rose due to African Swine Fever’s impact on pork production.
With the United States (U.S.) consumer, lamb remains more of a niche product primarily for
specific holidays and is often eaten away from home. The Livestock Market Information Center (LMIC) predicts a decrease in lamb production in the U.S. for 2023 which should see feeder and slaughter lamb prices hold strong through the remainder of the year.
“Here in Alberta the lamb market has remained resilient with provincial live lamb prices for the period January through April 2023 at $238.71 per hundredweight, down 8.8% from the same period in 2022,” states Boyda. “And while lamb consumption may be waning as consumers face inflationary pressures,
Alberta live lamb prices are nearly 13% above the 5-year average price for the same period.”
“Price volatility remains at the auction markets,” concludes Boyda. “Average weekly auction market prices for the period January through June 9, 2023, were $222.45 per hundredweight for market lamb and $262.07 per hundredweight for feeder lamb. Both those show a decline of nearly 20% over the same period last year.”

Hello Peace Region! This week we are featuring the Pea Leaf Weevil, an invasive insect to Canada and has been recently detected in the BC Peace.
This pest can cause problems to pulse crops and perennial legumes, as it is able to attack the plant in two different ways. The larvae feed on the root nodules resulting in the reduction of nitrogen fixation.
The main characteristics of the larvae include a C-shaped body, a milky-white colour with a brown head, and no legs. The adult is a 5mm long beetle with a greyish body, and 3 light-coloured stripes extending down the length of its body.
In addition to the larval feeding, the adults feed on leaves causing foliage damage which impacts the photosynthetic area. The BC Peace Pest Monitoring Project will be monitoring pea and perennial legume crops for this pest.
We will be scouting and using pheromone traps to help determine where this pest is located within the region. To help prevent crop damage from the pea leaf weevil here are some management options! A biological benefit are ground beetles and rove beetles which are predators to the weevil. They consume both adult and larvae weevils.
A cultural option is to inoculate and fertilize your crops; a fertilizer treatment to increase
soil nitrogen concentrations may help limit the damage caused by this pest. Chemical options include both seed treatments and foliar spray insecticides.
For more information about the pea leaf weevil please visit the Prairie Pest Monitoring Network. If you have any questions or think you have this pest, please contact Keith Uloth, phone: 250-613-0761 or email: pest@bcgrain. com

A new workforce initiative will support British Columbia’s agriculture and food industry in recruiting and retaining the workers who will help provide a stable food supply for a growing population in B.C. and around the world.
“The demand for B.C. food and beverage products continues to grow, and we need to address labour challenges now, so we can continue to rely on B.C.’s agriculture and food sector in the
future,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “Our government is working hard to increase the number of B.C. agriculture workers so we will have a safe and resilient local food supply for generations to come.”
The Agriculture and Food Workforce Development Initiative will provide as much as $15 million to help strengthen the workforce by:
improving recruitment and
retention of domestic workers and supporting targeted training to develop a skilled workforce; implementing labour-market development strategies and workforce plans; and supporting the health and wellbeing of the agriculture and food workforce.
AgSafe is the first organization supported under the new program and will receive $755,000 to expand mental-health services to the B.C. agriculture sector. This funding will support the
expansion of AgSafe’s mental wellness in agriculture initiative that encourages producers to reach out for help and offers mental wellness resources for the agricultural community.
The Agriculture and Food Workforce Development Initiative is funded by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, and delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC.

Your beloved canine companion is starting to slow down as he gets older. He starts off looking a little stiff and taking a big longer to get up after his naps. Over time, more and more playtime turns to naptime. The ‘zoomies’ are less frequent. He seems happy and healthy but there are subtle hints that he is sore. These changes are often chalked up to “getting old” but one of the most common causes is joint pain. Osteoarthritis is very common, with 20% of dogs over 1 year of old having the disease. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative disease of the joints. It can be started with trauma, abnormal joint shape (this can be from birth) or general ‘wear and tear’ as animals’ age. All this can lead to chronic pain, just like in humans with arthritis. How do we know that a dog has OA? The best screening tool is you. Dogs are much tougher than people and don’t cry or whine when they are in pain, unless it is sudden or very painful. Look for stiffness or limping after long or hard play sessions. Taking the stairs more slowly or being reluctant to jump into a vehicle can be subtle signs. Dogs will become impatient, growl or snap at other animals or even children when they are in pain. Some shift positions often or are restless at night. Sleeping more than usual is a sign of chronic pain, usually joint pain or dental pain. Veterinarians can perform radiographs to assess the joints and look for evidence of changes in the bone.
Weight and body condition score is one of the most important aspects of overall animal health, but especially with joint disease. Keeping animals in a lean body condition is important to keeping them pain free in the future and can decrease pain once the arthritis has begun. Weight loss can be difficult, but pets can’t sneak into the cookie jar themselves – we need to make sure that we are monitoring their intake and giving them daily exercise in order to stay lean and trim.

Omega 3 supplements or joint specific supplements can help as well to keep joints healthy for longer. Not all supplements are created equal so it is important to discuss with your veterinarian what ingredients are important. Green lipped mussels for example are proven by research to have a benefit. Other ingredients include MSM, hyaluronic acid and glucosamine.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Metacam or Galliprant can be used to treat pain. These medications can have side effects and the risk increases with long term use so consulting with your veterinarian is recommended. Injectable Cartrophen is a joint supplement to help with arthritis and has given many patients a new lease on life. This is an under the skin injection, starting with once weekly then once monthly as maintenance.

When the body undergoes chronic pain, such as the pain from osteoarthritis, the body changes how it reacts to stimuli and pain signals. Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a molecule that acts on the receptors on our nerves that tells our brains when we are hurt or in pain. When there is chronic pain, NGF increases its activity causing the brain to feel more pain. For example, if you tap your finger with a hammer over and over, eventually it is going to hurt much worse, even though you are using the same amount of force to hit your finger. This increased pain is caused by the receptors telling the brain that it hurts, louder and louder until you get away from whatever is causing you pain. Unfortunately with our arthritis patients, the pain is coming from their own joints. There is a new product available that targets NGF in order to decrease the pain signals that go to the brain. Librela is an anti-NGF monoclonal antibody. This means that the molecules in Librela attack the NGF to decrease the amount of the factor in the body, effectively decreasing our dog’s pain. Since it is so specific, it is a very safe product with minimal side effects. It is safe in our older patients, even those with liver or kidney issues that make daily antiinflammatory medications risky. Side effects are limited to pain or swelling at the injection site. It is a monthly injection which is very beneficial, especially for our patients that avoid medications.
Not all dogs respond the same to every medication and as the disease progresses, we may need to add in pain medications once diet, exercise and supplements are no longer keeping them pain free. Fortunately there are many options available in order to help our furry friends comfortable for as long as possible.
“When water sources are diminished due to lack of quantity or quality, shallow buried pasture water pipelines should be considered as a practical and economical way to supply livestock with water on pasture,” says Shawn Elgert, agricultural water engineer with the Alberta government. “Instead of constructing a dugout where the runoff is not consistent or dependable, a pasture pipeline can bring the water to the cattle instead of forcing the cattle to go the water.”
Shallow buried pasture water pipelines have many benefits, such as improving animal health and performance by providing clean and fresh water, reducing soil erosion and nutrient runoff by providing an alternative to accessing natural water sources, enhancing pasture productivity and quality by enabling rotational grazing and better distribution of manure, saving time and labour by eliminating the need to haul water, and increasing land value by adding permanent water infrastructure.
These pipelines are designed to be used during the frost-free part of the pasture
season. They are polyethylene pipes that can be installed between 6 and 30 inches below the ground and can deliver water from a pressurized source (such as a dugout, well, or municipal line) to a trough or a tank.
The pipes are usually one to two inches in diameter, depending on the length and demand of the system. The pipes can be installed using a plow or a ripper that cuts a narrow furrow in the soil and places the pipe in it. The furrow is then closed by running a tractor tire over it.
“High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are recommended as they can withstand rupture from water freezing inside the pipe,” explains Elgert. “If spring watering is desired, it is advised to blow the lines out in the fall after using, as the lines can take some time to thaw in the spring. If the line is as deep as 30 inches, it is harder to remove if maintenance is required.”
Selecting a larger diameter pipe than required for flow rates can help reduce energy
requirements as well as installation problems (for example, if a rock has created a kink in the line). Companies that install these types of pipelines often get a better deal on the pipe as they purchase large quantities, so producers should consider hiring a company install it.
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation has a pipeline plow available and free to use. For more information on the pipeline plow, contact 310FARM and ask to speak with a water specialist. A tractor with at least 100 horsepower is recommended to use with this plow. To avoid any surprises during installation, one pass should be made with the plow before installing the pipe.
“The design and installation of shallow buried pasture water pipelines depend on several factors, such as location and capacity of the water source, distance and elevation of the pasture, number and type of livestock, layout and size of the troughs or tanks, soil type and topography, and availability of power and equipment.”

A partnership between the governments of Canada and Alberta will help beekeepers hit hard by extreme cold and varroa mites. Over the 2021-22 winter, Alberta’s beekeepers experienced high losses due to extreme cold weather and varroa mite infestations. Some reported losses were as high as 50%.
The Canada-Alberta Bee Colony Replacement Assistance Initiative, an AgriRecovery program delivered by Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, will compensate eligible commercial beekeepers who purchased replacement colonies, bee packages or queens between January 1, 2022 and May 1, 2023.
Completed application forms and all supporting documents are due by July 31, 2023.

Commercial food hub operators can now join farmers, fishers, processors and sector organizations in receiving traceability system funding to support food safety, streamlined operations and increased sales opportunities.
Traceability systems are required by most large retail stores and provide important information about where a plant, animal or food product came from and its journey along the supply chain.
Tracing product movement can be a useful tool for protecting public health, food safety and animal health, and reducing response times in the event of an emergency.
The Traceability Value Chain program provides as much as $75,000 to support sector organizations, commercial food hubs and value chains of three or more businesses with the installation of traceability equipment and software.
The funding is made available
through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a fiveyear (April 1, 2023, until March 31, 2028) $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the competitiveness, innovation and resiliency of the agriculture,
agrifood and agriculture‐based products sector. This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and $2.5 billion in costshared programs and activities that are funded 60% federally and 40% provincially or territorially.

states Blue, “crop carryover is often compared to annual usage of a crop. If canola carryover on July 31 is near 700,000 tonnes and annual usage for this crop year totals 18.4 million tonnes, the stocks to usage ratio of 0.70000 million/18.4 million, expressed as a percentage, is 3.8%. One month of crop supply is about 8.3% (100/12 months), implying less than 2 weeks supply until canola harvest begins.”
“The price of canola has fallen substantially during the last few months, possibly giving the impression that canola demand has faltered,” says Neil Blue, crop market analyst with the Alberta government. “But that’s not so, according to statistics provided by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC).”
According to the early June issue of Grain Statistics Weekly from the CGC, from the beginning of this crop year August 1, 2022 up to this June 4, there have been 7.32 million tonnes of canola exported and 8.66 million tonnes of canola crushed. In addition, there would have been some unrecorded off-grade canola used
in the feed industry. So, at week 44 of 52 of this crop year, about 16 million tonnes of canola have been used. The pace of canola usage has averaged 363,000 tonnes per week.
Last December, Statistics Canada had estimated the 2022 Canadian canola production at 18.174 million tonnes and carryover canola from last crop year at 865,000 tonnes. If Canada imports an estimated 100,000 tonnes, the estimated total canola supply this crop year is 19.14 million tonnes. If 16 million tonnes of canola are already used, that implies remaining canola inventory of about 3.1 million tonnes available until the 2023
canola crop becomes available. If the weekly average canola usage pace slowed for the balance of this crop year to 300,000 tonnes, the additional usage would be 2.4 million tonnes. That would leave about 700,000 tonnes of canola remaining July 31 until new crop canola harvest.
“To put that into perspective,”
2022 canola production of 18.174 million tonnes is possibly underestimated. Some agencies and analysts estimate Canadian 2022 canola production near 19 million tonnes. “Even if that higher production is later confirmed,” concludes Blue, “a recalculated stocks to use ratio (1.52 million/18.4 million, or 8.3%) would still be tight at just a onemonth canola supply carryover.”

Hi, Anika Carroll here, reporting from the Lakeshore 4-H Club, our club would like to thank everyone who supported our annual Mother’s Day Dirt Sale this year, we enjoyed seeing you all, and hope your gardens do well! It’s always a successful fundraiser, and we look forward to doing it again next year!
We have all been working hard getting our animals ready for the show and auction this year and can’t wait to show off our beef and hog projects. Most of us have clipped all of our steers in these past 3 weeks and washing them lots! Personally, that is one of my favourite parts of the year with my steer and heifer, getting them show ready is a lot of fun for me! Everyone’s animals are growing nicely and looking very healthy and happy.
We invite you to join us at the Dawson Creek Exhibition Grounds on July 15th and 16th for our Achievement Days. The auction will follow the Friends of 4-H Supper at 4pm, with the live auction starting at 5pm. There will also be a online catalogue for you to view all animals being auctioned as well as online bidding will be available for those that can not attend in person. Hope to see you there!
Anika, over and out.
Alberta Open Farms Days is an incubator for agri-tourism and rural sustainability, bringing Albertans together through educational and experiential agricultural-based initiatives to learn about where their food comes from. As well, rural communities and some of Alberta’s most talented chefs will be hosting a memorable series of farm to table culinary events that will be held around the province using Alberta farm products.
In 2022, more than 110 host farms were part of Open Farm Days, welcoming almost 16,000 Albertans to their farms and ranches; and, 92% of host farms said they would participate again.
Host farms have included traditional farms, livestock (bison, cattle, alpaca, sheep, llama, goat, poultry) farms and ranches, organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, craft distilleries, meaderies, craft breweries, stables, petting zoos, along with honey, fruit, vegetable, grain and u-pick farms.
Since 2013, Open Farm Days has seen nearly 150,000 person visits, injecting over $1.1 million into the rural economy through on-farm sales. Since its launch, the public has enjoyed over 900 Alberta farms. The number of culinary events has also increased over the years, from just 12 in 2013 to 70 in 2022.
Participating farms and ranches have had very positive experiences being part of Alberta Open Farm Days:
“Many visitors were unaware that hops could be grown in Alberta. Many ‘aha’ moments were had during our sensory panel as many people were surprised at the different aromas a hop can produce.” (Water Valley Hops)
“Due to our relationship to the rural farming community with our markets and programs, we feel that Open Farm Days is a great opportunity to promote our local growers and producers for all areas of products. We can highlight wine, beer, produce, eggs, beef, honey, dairy products, wild meats, micro greens and more within the county of Stettler.” (Stettler District Agricultural Society)
A new program will help B.C.’s agricultural producers improve water management and water supply for crops and livestock, resulting in more agricultural production and strengthened food security.
“Access to water is crucial for food production and ensuring we have sustainable, resilient local food systems,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “The Agricultural Water Infrastructure program will help B.C.’s agricultural communities adapt to climate-change effects, like the increased threat of drought, and help grow more food by supporting new and improved water storage and water-supply infrastructure.”
The program will support more efficient water management, including the use of leading-edge technology in water-scarce and drought-prone areas, so available water can be maximized for agricultural uses, such as irrigation and livestock watering. Support for additional water infrastructure will also be considered if there is high potential for farmland expansion or if the increase in water supply will lead to more agricultural production.
“Water is essential to agricultural production. However, in recent years, multiple regions of British Columbia have experienced adverse climate events that placed considerable stress on supplies of safe, reliable water for farmers at the most critical time of the growing season,” said Jennifer Woike, president, BC Agriculture Council. “Farmers and ranchers are leaders in the efficient management of water resources, and the Agricultural Water Infrastructure program is an important investment in that leadership role.”
The $20-million Agricultural Water Infrastructure program will be open to B.C. farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers as well as Indigenous communities, Indigenous producers, irrigation and improvement districts, local governments, and agricultural and conservation groups.
The program will be administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC (IAF).
