New hospital for Dawson Creek in 2027

Health Minister Adrian Dix was on hand in Dawson Creek this afternoon to announce a 2023 construction start - and 2027 completion - of a new district hospital.

“People in the community and the region should expect to see work

at the site in the weeks and months ahead as construction begins on the new and expanded hospital in Dawson Creek, and this is fantastic news,” said Dix this afternoon in Mile Zero.

Dix told the Alaska Highway News and Dawson Creek Mirror the plan

is now locked in place in terms of services to be included in the building – which will be build behind NLC Dawson Creek campus.

Dix says the move from the old hospital to the new one will take only a couple of days for staff.

New DC fall fair parade route set for 2023

There will be a new parade route for the 2023 fall fair parade – to help avoid crossing 8th Street.

Rotary Club of Dawson Creek’s Joe Judge was on hand at city hall this morning – proposing a new route for the fall fair parade.

Judge and more noted the key issue – avoiding crossing the highway – 8th Street.

Traditionally starting at the DC Co-op – the proposal this year will see the parade begin between the Library and O’Brien school. It will then work its way through the downtown core, including passing city hall before heading south at the Mile Zero Flags on 10th Street, making its way south to the Library, across the Dawson Creek m to NLC for the parade’s

traditional conclusion.

“There are some really good pros to move to this location,” said Judge about the larger muster/ gathering area between O’Brien School and the DC Public Library. The less congested nature compared to gathering along 8th Street - a provincial highway - was also noted.

Council noted letting the public know about the change will be key.

“We will be starting this week, and will have people at the Co-op the day-of as well,” added Judge.

The proposal is expected to be approved by Dawson Creek city council later today.

Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic

Osteoarthritis in dogs

DR. CHARLOTTE CORBETT

Dawson Creek Vet Clinic

Your beloved canine companion is starting to slow down as he gets older. He starts off looking a little stiff and taking a big longer to get up after his naps. Over time, more and more playtime turns to naptime. The ‘zoomies’ are less frequent. He seems happy and healthy but there are subtle hints that he is sore. These changes are often chalked up to “getting old” but one of the most common causes is joint pain. Osteoarthritis is very common, with 20% of dogs over 1 year of old having the disease. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative disease of the joints. It can be started with trauma, abnormal joint shape (this can be from birth) or general ‘wear and tear’ as animals’ age. All this can lead to chronic pain, just like in humans with arthritis. How do we know that a dog has OA? The best screening tool is you. Dogs are much tougher than people and don’t cry or whine when they are in pain, unless it is sudden or very painful. Look for stiffness or limping after long or hard play sessions. Taking the stairs more slowly or being reluctant to jump into a vehicle can be subtle signs. Dogs will become impatient, growl or snap at other animals or even children when they are in pain. Some shift positions often or are restless at night. Sleeping more than usual is a sign of chronic pain, usually joint pain or dental pain. Veterinarians can perform radiographs to assess the joints and look for evidence of changes in the bone.

What can we do to prevent and treat OA?

Weight and body condition score is one of the most important aspects of overall animal health, but especially with joint disease. Keeping animals in a lean body condition is important to keeping them pain free in the future and can decrease pain once the arthritis has begun. Weight loss can be difficult, but pets can’t sneak into the cookie jar themselves – we need to make sure that we are monitoring their intake and giving them daily exercise in order to stay lean and trim.

Small Animals: 250-782-5616

Omega 3 supplements or joint specific supplements can help as well to keep joints healthy for longer. Not all supplements are created equal so it is important to discuss with your veterinarian what ingredients are important. Green lipped mussels for example are proven by research to have a benefit. Other ingredients include MSM, hyaluronic acid and glucosamine.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Metacam or Galliprant can be used to treat pain. These medications can have side effects and the risk increases with long term use so consulting with your veterinarian is recommended. Injectable Cartrophen is a joint supplement to help with arthritis and has given many patients a new lease on life. This is an under the skin injection, starting with once weekly then once monthly as maintenance.

A New Approach: Librela

When the body undergoes chronic pain, such as the pain from osteoarthritis, the body changes how it reacts to stimuli and pain signals. Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a molecule that acts on the receptors on our nerves that tells our brains when we are hurt or in pain. When there is chronic pain, NGF increases its activity causing the brain to feel more pain. For example, if you tap your finger with a hammer over and over, eventually it is going to hurt much worse, even though you are using the same amount of force to hit your finger. This increased pain is caused by the receptors telling the brain that it hurts, louder and louder until you get away from whatever is causing you pain. Unfortunately with our arthritis patients, the pain is coming from their own joints. There is a new product available that targets NGF in order to decrease the pain signals that go to the brain. Librela is an anti-NGF monoclonal antibody. This means that the molecules in Librela attack the NGF to decrease the amount of the factor in the body, effectively decreasing our dog’s pain. Since it is so specific, it is a very safe product with minimal side effects. It is safe in our older patients, even those with liver or kidney issues that make daily antiinflammatory medications risky. Side effects are limited to pain or swelling at the injection site. It is a monthly injection which is very beneficial, especially for our patients that avoid medications.

Not all dogs respond the same to every medication and as the disease progresses, we may need to add in pain medications once diet, exercise and supplements are no longer keeping them pain free. Fortunately there are many options available in order to help our furry friends comfortable for as long as possible.

OPINION Nichols: the puzzle of the week

error of only 27 seconds per year, or more understandably, one day in 3236 years.

Close enough for most of us!

But the seven-day week? Julius and Gregory are on the same page with the days of the week but maybe not so much with how the sevenday week came to be.

In fact, the six days on and one off goes all the way back to the Creation event. It took the Creator six days of work to put Paradise together and officiate at the wedding of our first parents.

Did you ever wonder why we have the week, why it is such an enduring measure of time, exactly seven days with seven names but without visible natural reason, without connection to the cycles of moon or sun like the day, the month, and the year?

Just seven days endlessly repeating. With the days falling on different dates each year.

Sixty years ago, on a sunny Sunday morning in Vancouver, BC, Mirja and I promised to stick together for life. Life has gone on much too quickly and we’ve built a home day by day together, thank You Lord, but this year the day falls on Friday – and the sun still shines.

I guess we can accept that.

To be sure, the week encourages a convenient limit on the time we work between breaks –and a limit on the extent to which greed may drive us to work. Granted, many employers or employment circumstances now require differing periods to accommodate production needs or the on-going needs for health care.

But the week still is only seven days! No one disputes that.

The zealots driving the French Revolution, in their unmitigated audacity and desire to dim or dumb the memory of their past, imposed a ten-day week on the nation.

Without lasting success. France soon went back to seven, not six or eight, days for the

The War on Crime.

week. One wonders why. Why have we kept an otherwise-inexplicable artifact of antiquity to regulate our work, play, vacation time, and production schedules until retirement when we tend to lose track of the days? That’s why I keep a daily journal.

Those who study such things tell us that there seem to be physical and mental health benefits to the seven-day cycle rather than some other cycle. If your curiosity drives you to it, do a bit of research and discover if the allegations are true.

What about the history of the seven-day week?

Unsurprisingly, history is a bit misty, but we do know a few time-sensitive details. For example, the Romans were onto the seven-day week big time before 45 BC. And how do we know? In 45 BC the Julian Calendar, called so in honor of Julios Caesar, was introduced in the Roman Empire. It stuck for the next 1600 years and continues to be used in some Eastern Orthodox situations. A casual observer like me might not recognize the differences between the Julian and the Gregorian, which most of the world has adopted as the international standard for tracking the days as well as the years.

Each has 365.25 days (approximately, close enough to keep business and social life functioning smoothly) in the year, with the accumulated .25s dropped in every fourth year.

The Gregorian, named in honor of Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, has a margin of

And then He gave them the schedule. “Take six days first to do all your work, you and your children after you, and then you get a day off. It is called the Sabbath. Every Seventh Day is a day of rest.” In fact, the first full day of human life in Paradise was the day of rest, a memorial set in time, a full 24 hours with their Creator.

And the cycle has never changed from that day to this in 2023.

Awesome!

Passing Awesome!

The weekly cycle has not changed, try as some have, to get us all mixed up. The Seventh Day this week followed the sixth just as it has from Week One.

The Sabbath on which Jesus worshiped according to His custom (Luke 4:16) falls on the Seventh Day today just as it did 2000 years ago. To be sure, there have been calendar changes, but the weekly cycle was not affected.

When the Gregorian superseded the Julian, Wednesday of this week was followed by Thursday of next week. Very few noticed.

I understand that most of you reading this column don’t acknowledge a Sabbath.

That’s your choice and I respect it.

But you still love your day off when you can get it and you can thank the weekly cycle from the beginning of time for that.

For the millions who recognize and honor the Seventh-Day Sabbath, carry on. It has a very long and noble history.

Those many millions more who have chosen the first day as your day of rest, your history is shorter and much easier to trace.

Dr. Jones dials up his Destiny

For 40 plus years Harrison Ford has been synonymous with Dr. Henry Jones Junior, the globetrotting archaeology teacher, grave robber, more. His adventures are well known- as are ingredients to a great adventure - throw in some historical value, some horror, some mystical and spiritual business, and away we go. Really about it. And all kinds of action.

Over four films, and an appearance in the television show in the mid 90s – the 2010s marked the first decade in which Ford hadn’t donned the fedora since the 70s.

It is a strong return after 15 years.

Raider of the Lost Ark is a perfect action ‘film’. Set piece after set piece.

My concern with it even as a three-year-old is the ending involves Jones hitching a ride on a submarine, getting caught, and then closing his eyes for the big finale.

For me Temple of Doom is a perfect action ‘movie’ – where the last 40 minutes is nothing but action.

The advantage this series has had for the last 30 years is Harrison ford is aging slower than most, including his character. While Ford is 80, Jones is 70 – so there is a bit to play on with Ford in better shape than most 80 year olds.

There is punching, and a great 20 minute throwback to the 1940s – which makes me wonder why a pitch shift couldn’t have been used to de-age Ford’s voice as well as his looks for the opening flashback to World War II.

Jump cut to h 1969 and the world has passed Dr. Jones by. The students don’t listen in class, and it’s moon day. Taking a page out of the young Indiana Jones chronicles TV show -Dr. Jones meets the moon astronauts, only come the end of the film meet another man of science.

This adventure starts off in like the Temple of Doom’s “One day of adventure” for Dr. Jones, before the plot gibe ways to more standard ‘Raiders’ like action beats, sets, and set up.

There is certainly more humour

here and more banter between Jones and his female lead here than the first three, even fourth movie, the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The story and script acknowledge Jones’ age. There seem to be a few major characters just shot and killed as well.

I found the story could have spent more time on the plane heading to the finale – and then more time in Syracuse come the ending.

I have little issue with the ending moves of the Dial of Destiny, nor the dénouement scene with one last Indiana Jones cameo – I feel the movie drags in the middle only.

Raiders, Temple of Doom 10/10

Last Crusade 9/10

Crystal Skull 7/10

Dial of Destiny 8/10

Albena Johnstone

May 21, 1933 - June 21, 2023

The family of Albena Johnstone announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday June 21st in Dawson Creek. She was 90 years old born in Carvel Alberta to Eugene and Augusta Facette. She had three older brothers, Albert, Roy and Wilfred.

She was well known her whole life for her avid knitting, I’m sure thousands of beautiful items for all her family and many friends. In her later years it was socks, gloves, toques and blankets. Another passion after our Dad passed was her love of rocks. Anytime anyone went on a trip she’d ask for a rock to add to her many collections.

Her biggest love was her love of God and she shared her beliefs with anyone who would listen. She read her Bible daily right up until her last morning alive. She was very fortunate to have family support and was able to keep busy and happy in the things she loved. She had lots on her agenda yet and was quite disappointed that she may miss our first convention since covid in Prince George end of July. She made many new friends in Dawson Creek since she moved there a year and a half ago.

In her early years she worked at the trolley diner in Parksville on Vancouver Island and also cooked in the logging camps where her brother’s and Dad worked. One unfortunate fellow complained about something and Mama’s brother Roy made him a tasty cup of hot chocolate (with exlax) and nailed the outhouse door shut! Another story she used to relate to us was how she used to wash her old French grandmother next door. She’d start at her feet and work up to her face... she was young maybe 6 at the time.

Our dear mom is survived by her four daughters: Robin Johnstone Cornell (Larry Cornell); Frances Crowder (Terry), Barbara Hansler (Delbert), Lorelei Johnstone. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandsons. She was predeceased by her husband Howard, five children, Wayne, Lynn, Douglas, Wanda and Heather.

Two grandsons, Jonnie and Danny. Her three brothers Albert,Roy and Wilfred and her parents Eugene and Augusta Facette.

Her memorial is in the hands of her congregation in Dawson Creek BC and will be via Zoom. The date, ID and password will be available soon. A recorded copy will be made for those who cannot be available. A tea may be possible at a later date as her daughters are not able to attend one now. You can obtain this information from her daughters once available.
