Bison Guy introduces regenerative ag approach

Bison Guy, a pioneer in sustainable agriculture, is proud to announce the opening of their state-of-the-art processing plant located directly on their ranch. With an unwavering commitment to regenerative practices, Bison Guy is revolutionizing the industry by ensuring that their bison and cattle are bred, reared, slaughtered, and packed within a remarkable three-mile radius.

This ground breaking initiative aligns perfectly with Bison Guy’s mission to prioritize both environmental stewardship and the production of high-quality, ethically raised meat products. By utilizing a localized approach to animal husbandry and processing, Bison Guy not only guarantees the highest standards of animal welfare but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

Owned and operated by the Weder Family. The Weders moved to Hudson’s Hope just over 10 years ago, initially starting with a beef cattle farm, then expanded into bison. However, during Covid years, with it being difficult to obtain abattoir slots and with the price of bison plummeting they decided to take on the challenge of building their own processing plant on the ranch. As part of this they created the brand Bison guy and currently deliver their meat directly to consumers throughout BC.

“At Bison Guy, we believe that the key to sustainable agriculture lies in harmonizing our operations with the natural ecosystem,” said Christoph Weder, Proprietor of Bison Guy. “Our commitment to regenerative practices goes beyond traditional farming methods. By launching our new processing plant on the ranch, we are able to closely monitor every aspect of the production process and ensure that our animals lead healthy and happy lives.” Even Luna, the youngest of Christoph and Erika’s four children admits that “ working with nature is our way of life”

The integration of regenerative agriculture practices in Bison Guy’s operations has garnered attention from both industry experts and consumers alike. Their dedication to land regeneration, rotational grazing, and responsible land management has not only improved the health of the ranch ecosystem but has also resulted in superior meat quality that consumers can feel good about.

Bison Guy’s new processing plant represents a significant milestone in their journey toward sustainable agriculture. By keeping the entire production process within a three-mile radius, they are setting a new standard for transparency, accountability, and environmental responsibility within the industry.

Taking action to support drought-stricken Western producers

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, announced an initial list of designated regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba where Livestock Tax Deferral has been authorized for 2023 due to extreme weather conditions.

The Government of Canada recognizes the significant challenges livestock producers in Western Canada are facing due to exceptionally dry conditions. Compounded by subsequent years of drought, pastures and forage production are significantly impacted, leading to low feed supplies for livestock. The government stands with farm families during this difficult time and is taking action to respond.

The Government of Canada has also worked quickly with the governments of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan on joint AgriRecovery assessments to examine the impacts of the drought and wildfires. Work with provinces is urgently progressing to finalize the AgriRecovery process and to determine any additional support required to cover the extraordinary costs incurred by producers.

The Livestock Tax Deferral provision allows livestock producers who are forced to sell all or part of their breeding herd due to drought or excess moisture to defer a portion of their income from sales until the following tax year. The income may be at least partially offset by the cost of reacquiring breeding animals, thus reducing the tax burden associated with the original sale.

As a preliminary list of prescribed drought and flood regions is usually completed in the early fall, designation of this provision earlier in the year helps provide assurance for producers as they make difficult herd management decisions. The Government of Canada will continue to monitor conditions across the country and will add other regions throughout the year if they meet the criteria.

Producers have access to a comprehensive suite of business risk management (BRM) programs that are the first line of defense for producers facing disasters, including AgriStability, AgriInsurance and AgriInvest. The Government of Canada has already supported requests from British Columbia and Alberta for late participation in AgriStability, as well as requests from British Columbia and Saskatchewan to increase the interim payment rate under AgriStability from 50% to 75%.

Harvest 2023: things to know this season

The Harvested Production Report (HPR) is a key part of post-harvest reporting. This report, which must be filed by October 15 for perennial crop insurance and November 15 for annual crop insurance, gives the first sign if the client is in a production shortfall and eligible for coverage.

To speed up the review and calculation of losses, clients are encouraged to:

submit their HPR as soon as possible after finishing harvest HPR by logging into their AFSC Connect account (HPRs may also be submitted by email, fax, mail or in person at their local AFSC office). To help with this, clients may want to take an acceptable grain sample to a primary or terminal elevator for accurate weight, grade and dockage. sign up for direct deposit by logging into their AFSC Connect account.

Clients who are in a claim position, may: qualify for faster payment through payment by declaration; or choose to receive an advance.

Payment by Declaration

When clients file their HPR, they are declaring their reported production for that crop year. If certain criteria are met, including the dollar amount of the shortfall and the grade (for annual crops) of the crop, clients can be compensated for their production loss through a payment by declaration. An on-farm

inspection is not required and the full amount owing to the client can be paid sooner. In most situations, clients can choose to defer the indemnity to the following year.

Post-harvest advance

If, after the HPR has been filed, it is found that crops are in a production shortfall, clients may want to take advantage of post-harvest advance options. These options allow eligible clients to receive a part of their estimated shortfall as an early payment prior to adjusters completing an on-farm production review. Clients do not have to take an advance on all crops and can choose to defer their advances to the following year.

In the case of hay and export timothy hay crops, the advance is calculated based on 50 per cent of the estimated shortfall.

Annual crop post-harvest advance options include:

a 50 per cent advance where clients receive half of their estimated shortfall; or a preliminary payment where eligible clients receive a higher percentage of their estimated shortfall.

Variable Price Benefit

Included with insurance is the Variable Price Benefit, a price protection feature, which increases coverage when fall market prices

are higher than the spring insurance price. It applies to most crops and compensates the client when they have a production shortfall below their insurance coverage and the price increases by at least 10 per cent, to a maximum of 50 per cent, during the growing season. This benefit is also included in areabased programs such as Pasture and Silage Greenfeed Insurance.

For most annual crops, due to improvements in varieties and management practices, yields generally increase over time. In order to ensure that individual coverage reflects this trend, individual yield records are adjusted by a trend factor.

For more information, please use Live Chat on our website or AFSC Connect, call our Client Care Centre at 1.877.899.2372 or contact your preferred branch office.

BYOB: what to consider to when cutting stage two crops for silage

Barry Yaremcio on Bulls September 1, 2023

Annual crop emergence this spring was spotty with some parts of the field not germinating until the June rains. For plants that did grow shortly after seeding, a second flush of tillers developed after the rains.

This created a crop with two different growth stages in the same field. The early growth is filling, and the late growth is at the heading to flowering stage. The question is, when is the best time to cut it for silage?

Quality of forages decline as they mature. Protein content decreases. Acid detergent fibre and neutral detergent fibre increase which reduces free choice intake. Energy content in the silage remains relatively constant. Energy in the straw decreases as it matures, but this loss is offset by the increasing amount of energy (starch) in the seed head. There is no advantage having fully mature grain and straw going into the pit, pile, or round bale silage. Cut the crop

when the more mature plants are at the correct stage for making silage.

Plants at different stages of maturity contain different amounts of water. The younger the plant, the higher the moisture content. Cereals are in the mid to late dough stage, contain approximately 65 to 70% moisture. Younger plants can be approximately 80% moisture. Waiting for the young plants to develop results in the older plants being over mature. Final moisture could be low, and the chopped silage is harder to pack.

It is tempting to cut the crop as close to the ground to maximize yield, but this can reduce quality. The bottom three to four inches of stem is the lowest quality part of the plant. In drought conditions, it also contains the highest concentration of nitrates. Soil kicked into the windrow by the swather, chopper, or baler pickup can result in white mould developing in the forage. Adjust equipment so this does not occur.

Sampling and testing the silage is recommended. With shorter

crops, the grain to forage ratio will be higher than in a normal growing season. Protein and energy could be higher than usual.

For additional information on when to cut silage, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or bjyaremcio@ gmail.com.

Substantial support for farmers, producers when getting on the RDAR

RDAR (Results Driven Agriculture Research), a distribution partner for the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF), is proud to have supported 1,280 projects on over a million acres of farm and ranch lands since its launch on August 4, 2022.

OFCAF extends cost-share funding to farmers, empowering them to implement best management practices (BMPs) that foster sustainability and environmental responsibility.

During its first year, RDAR provided substantial support for

the program:

One million acres of Alberta farmland involved; Over 1,200 producers supported; $10 million awarded in 2022, ~$18 million more committed in 2023. The program is likely to continue in 2024.

“As leaders in livestock, forage and crop production, Alberta’s producers are embracing on-farm practices that benefit both their operations and the environment,” said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, federal minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “With support through the OnFarm Climate Action Fund, producers are tackling climate change while building resiliency and a sustainable, competitive agriculture sector.”

“We are pleased to share the program’s success, supporting producer-led projects to address environmental and economic concerns – increasing profitability, improving long-term productivity, and powering sustainability,” says RDAR CEO Mark Redmond. “The strong demand for funding is evidence that Alberta farmers and ranchers are motivated to mitigate climate change while still growing revenues at the farm gate, protecting the environment, and producing food for the world.”

The OFCAF program lowers producers’ cost barriers to adopting BMPs in nitrogen emission reduction; cover cropping; and rotational grazing; tackling climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhancing carbon

sequestration.

“Quite often, the cost of trying a new technique is a barrier to adoption, particularly when the cost of adoption is high, and the success of the technique isn’t well known or accepted locally. Cost share programs, such as OFCAF, help by reducing the cost of the technique to aid in increasing adoption.” said Mike Hittinger, who received OFCAF funds to implement rotational grazing on his farm operation.

Producers are significantly impacting the agricultural landscape through their eagerness to implement new practices.

“These funds, and going through this OFCAF application process, has made us more aware of the environment — more aware of our grass health and wetlands health. The biggest goal for us with this funding is to preserve the natural grassland of our farm.” says Paul and Lori Kinnee, who received OFCAF funding to implement all three BMPs on their farmland, including rotational grazing on their natural grassland.

RDAR’s OFCAF Team continues to connect with producers and make them aware of the program’s benefits. Communication has taken the form of in-person meetings, presentations, webinars, online materials development, a monthly newsletter, and micro-credential courses.

Feed testing & analysis for beef cattle

When you don’t know the quality of feed on an operation, maintaining animal health and welfare can become significantly more difficult. Visual assessment of feedstuffs is not accurate enough to access quality and may lead to cows being underfed and losing body condition, or wasting money on expensive supplements that aren’t necessary.

Why feed test?

Avoid sneaky production problems, such as poor gains or reduced conception caused by mineral or nutrient deficiencies or excesses; Prevent or identify potentially devastating problems due to toxicity from mycotoxins, nitrates, sulfates, or other minerals or nutrients; Develop appropriate rations that meet the nutritional needs of their beef cattle; Identify nutritional gaps that may require supplementation;

Economize feeding, and possibly make use of opportunities to include diverse ingredients; Accurately price feed for buying or selling.

It’s critical to collect a feed sample that is representative of the feed ingredients that you are testing. Any feed type that will be used to feed beef cattle can and should be analysed, including baled forages and straw, by-products, silage, baleage, grain, swath grazing, cover crops, and corn.

Feed quality will change as the feeding season progresses. Samples should be taken

as close to feeding or selling as possible, while leaving enough time for the results to come back from the lab.

For baled products, use a forage probe to obtain a minimum of twenty cores for each sample you wish to submit. Sample square and round bales 12-15” deep and stacks or chopped hay 18” deep. Round bales should be sampled from the side (round end) and squares should be sampled at the end. Separate your forage inventory into lots with similar characteristics – same field, same maturity at cutting, same plant composition, etc. Hand grab samples will not be representative enough to give accurate results.

Some counties, rural municipalities, applied research associations, and forage testing labs also have probes for rent. Forage probes can be purchased from farm supply stores and range in price from about $100 to upwards of $500 for fancier drill driven models. Producers can construct their own forage probes but should ensure the diameter is between 3/8” to 3/4”. The tip should not be angled, and needs to be kept sharp regardless of whether it is serrated or not. The probe should not be longer than 24 inches.

I have the sample now where do I send it? Feed samples can be sent to labs across Canada and the United States. A listing of Canadian labs can be found HERE. Labs should

be chosen on suitability of measurements (NIR vs wet chemistry) for the nutrients you’re interested in and be willing to provide details on how each test/calculation is performed. Standard testing packages from commercial labs cost between $18-200 depending on the suite of tests being performed but can be as high as $450-$500 for specialty analyses.

Collect the forage in a plastic zip-lock bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing. Clearly label with your name, the type of forage, the lot/area where the sample was collected, the date of sampling and any notes that might affect the results. For silage, collect hand samples or use a longer probe, from the upper, middle, and lower parts from four quadrants of the silage pile or pit as long as it is safe to do so.

This will result in a larger sample size than what can be submitted. Mix these samples well and obtain a sub-sample from the combined material. For swath grazing or standing crops, obtain representative samples of the sward (for swaths) or the whole plant, according to lab specifications.

Preparing grain bins

Before filling grain bins or using temporary storage, clean the bins or storage site thoroughly.

Follow these steps each time you empty a bin and before filling it with new grain:

Eliminate dust and dockage from any cracks in the bin.

Repair holes, cracks and leaks in the bin and cracks in the floor if it is concrete.

Clean under the floor grates. Apply approved insecticides to disinfest grain bins

For temporary storage - clear area of all debris.

For temporary storage - ensure area is graded sothat water flows away from the grain.

Temporary storage

Temporary storage may be defined as storing grain in a location for a short period of time prior to marketing. It is often used when current storage is full and marketing conditions are not attractive.

Temporary storage may include using

Structures not intended for grain storage, for example, machine sheds

Bunker storage. In this case, the ground, bunker and covers should be prepared appropriately. Piling grain on the ground. In this case, preparing the ground and tarp is important to preserve grain quality.

Weekly Prairie Insect Information

Insect scouting season continues, even though harvest has already started in some regions! Development of many pest insects has been ahead of schedule all year in most parts of the prairies, thanks to warmer than average weather during this growing season.

Adult grasshoppers are now in flight and will be laying eggs across the prairie region. Scouting individual fields is the best way to estimate crop risk. At this time of year, we start to look forward to next season. Insect surveyors are working to estimate grasshopper populations in ditches/roadsides and may be collecting samples of adult grasshoppers for species identification.

moths, Dr. Maya Evenden’s lab at the University of Alberta is conducting research on diamondback moth, flea beetles, and alfalfa weevil. Learn more about Maya’s research program in this week’s Prairie Research post.

Use the links in the Provincial Insect Updates post to learn more about what is happening with populations of insect pests (and beneficial insects) in your province.

Remember:

1) There are many resources available to help with planning for late-season insecticide applications to ensure Pre-Harvest Interval requirements are met.

Outlook for livestock feed input

The Canadian commercial feed market (for example, pelleted rations for cattle, dairy, hog and poultry) grew over 20% in 2022, reaching a record $11.5 billion in sales. Most of this growth was driven by increases in feed grain prices stemming from Russia’s war against Ukraine. The livestock sector has faced numerous years of tight feed supplies and expensive feed grains. High feed costs have pressured profitability throughout the Canadian livestock industry, including feed mill operators, as volatile commodity prices negatively impacted their margins.

We are projecting the Canadian commercial feed market to grow 6.6% in 2023 to $12.3 billion, driven by strong livestock receipts and feed grain prices that remain historically high. The Eastern Canadian commercial feed market is expected to have the largest growth at over 9% in 2023 to $6.1 billion. Eastern Canadian growth is driven by its

large dairy sector and an expanding poultry sector. In Western Canada, we are projecting a 4.0% increase in feed sales to $5.7 billion, largely due to drought conditions and the need to purchase feed. In Atlantic Canada, we are projecting a 7.6% increase in feed sales but recent flooding in Nova Scotia could change that projection. Feed grain prices did trend down through the first half of 2023. However, drought conditions in North America have once again led to rising feed costs. Drought conditions have resulted in stressed pastures and reduced hay crops. Provincial crop insurance agencies in Western Canada have moved quickly to allow producers to move poor crops into alternative uses (for example, grazing or baling), which provides some relief to the drought-stricken livestock sector. Corn imports have also risen as the feedlot sector braces for tighter feed supplies as we head into the fall calf-run and winter 2024 feeding. Some cow-calf and feedlot operations have worked with their local feed mills to utilize screening rations with supplements to maintain herds and make up for poor pasture conditions.

The fall calf run has already begun in regions facing extreme drought conditions that are forcing either an earlier weaning of calves or culling of cattle. Increased numbers of cows and heifers are heading to slaughter. A continued contraction of the North American cattle herd was expected as indicated in our top charts to monitor in 2023, but we now expect further contraction. Getting through the drought conditions will be key for these operations. The good news, if any during a drought, is sales are occurring at strong prices, providing cashflow for operations to re-build their herds once pasture conditions improve. However, rebuilding cattle herds following drought and culling is a multi-year initiative. The drought’s impact on herd size will ultimately impact feed mill sales into 2024 and beyond. We are currently in a weather market, with volatile feed prices and a market that could now go in either direction depending on weather and its final impact on overall North American production.

North American hog sector expected to contract

In addition to high feed costs, profitability challenges in the pork/ hog sector are having impacts throughout the supply chain. The North American hog sector is going through an economic down cycle. Hog herd size is expected to decline as the number of sows bred and

farrowings decline across North America. A decline in the hog herd means reduced feed demand in the short run and will weigh on the commercial feed market as farrowings are reduced and fewer hogs are finished in Canada. Hog production declines are expected to occur as the North American sector adapts to reduced pork demand. The current contraction in the hog sector is likely temporary as the hog sector expansion phase will once again return. The hog production contraction and expansion cycle is much shorter than beef at approximately four years.

Canadians love chicken and eggs. Per capita chicken meat consumption is up 16% since 2010 and eggs are up 32% (Figure 2). Canada’s population recently hit 40 million people and is growing at a record pace. Canada’s population has a direct impact on the feed supply business, particularly in Eastern Canada with its larger presence of supply managed sectors (for example, poultry and dairy). Along with having nearly half of the Canadian population, Eastern Canada’s immigration levels are rising, which is good news for the Canadian poultry industry (and to a lesser extent the entire livestock industry).

Selling grain through an unlicensed buyer: take these steps first

Producers who are thinking about selling their grain through an unlicensed grain buyer need to consider a variety of factors, especially if they have production insurance through AFSC.

SpringLake RecreationArea,AB

Agriculture Financial Services (AFSC) defines a licensed buyer as a grain buyer who is licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) as a primary elevator or terminal elevator. AFSC only accepts the receipted grade on sales from buyers who have a primary elevator or a terminal elevator license from the CGC.

The Commission offers several classes of licenses, and the requirements are different for each class. The terminal elevator and primary elevator are the only two classes where licensees are required to sample upon receipt and resolve grade and dockage issues through the CGC.

If grain is sold to a grain dealer, private buyer or process elevator before an AFSC adjuster performs a post-harvest inspection, AFSC may use the client’s samples, based on the following conditions:

1/ Clients need to contact their preferred AFSC branch office and obtain approval to collect samples for AFSC grading purposes prior to the grain being removed.

If clients do not receive approval before the grain is removed, AFSC will use the designated grade of the grain.

Grain sold directly off the field

If the sample is acceptable, AFSC will grade it and use the actual grade.

If the sample is not acceptable, AFSC will use the designated grade of the grain.

Grain sold from the bin

Grain sold from the bin and there is a minimum of 400 bushels remaining in the bin, an adjuster will compare the client’s sample to the grain in the bin to determine if the sample is acceptable:

If the grain sample is acceptable, it will be graded accordingly.

If the sample is not acceptable, a new sample will be taken from the bin.

If the sample is not acceptable and there are less than 400 bushels remaining in the bin, AFSC will use the designated grade of the grain.

If the bin is being emptied, or if there will be less than 400 bushels remaining, clients can contact their branch office prior to moving the grain for AFSC to come sample the grain before it is moved.

2/ If approval is obtained, AFSC must receive a representative grain sample per truckload if sold off the field or per bin.

Sampling requirements are as follows:

Grain must be collected in a sealed container (i.e., five gallon pail) that preserves moisture content, maintains sample integrity, and keeps out rodents and insects.

The sample needs to be obtained intermittently, such as while the grain is loaded into trucks for sales directly from the field or from each truck while unloading into bins.

Samples are to be stored in a manner acceptable to AFSC and represent the quality of the crop that was sold.

If the client saves a sample and AFSC determines that it is unrepresentative, AFSC will assign the grain its designated grade.

If you would like more information about AFSC client responsibilities when selling grain to an unlicensed buyer, please use Live Chat on our website or AFSC Connect, call our Client Care Centre at 1.877.899.2372 or contact your preferred branch office.

The freedom of motorcycle travel, the importance of accommodations

The thrill of the open road, the wind in your face, and the freedom to explore new horizons—motorcycle travel offers a unique experience unlike any other. However, to truly enjoy the journey, finding comfortable accommodations along the way is essential. In this article, we will delve into the world of motorcycle travel and explore the valuable relationships that have and are being built with organizations like the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), making your adventure even more rewarding.

The Freedom of Motorcycle Travel

As those who ride know, motorcycle travel embodies a sense of freedom and adventure that appeals to many. The ability to navigate winding roads, witness breathtaking landscapes, and experience a heightened connection with nature is unparalleled. However, for a successful journey, proper planning and logistics are crucial, especially when it comes to finding suitable accommodations.

The Importance of

Accommodations

Comfortable and welcoming accommodations are vital for any traveler, especially motorcyclists. After long hours on the road, riders need a place to rest and rejuvenate. Organizations like the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association have had their members begin taking the Rider Friendly ® Training Course offered by the CMTA and the RFBA to ensure that hotels that display the new Reserved Motorcycle Parking Signs understand the unique needs of motorcyclists and strive to provide them with the perfect haven during their travels.

These signs are sponsored by Braithwaite Boyle Accident Injury Lawyer!

Building Relationships with the AHLA

The Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association, known for its commitment to promoting excellence in the hospitality industry, can be an invaluable resource for motorcycle travelers. By establishing relationships with the AHLA and its member establishments, riders gain access to a network of trusted and motorcycle-friendly accommodations across Alberta.

1. Rider Friendly Accommodations

The only way a hotel, motel

or any other accommodations provider can obtain one of these signs is by taking the training. These properties committed to and most often are equipped to cater to the specific needs of motorcyclists. These accommodations offer secure parking and convenient amenities such as laundry services and onsite restaurants. Such motorcyclefriendly environments foster a warm and inclusive atmosphere for riders.

2. Safety and Security

Motorcycle travel often involves leaving one’s bike unattended. By staying at AHLA member establishments that have the Reserved Motorcycle Parking signs, riders can have peace of mind, knowing that their motorcycles are in safe and secure locations. The association encourages its members to provide designated parking spaces, surveillance systems, and other measures to ensure the protection of guests’ prized possessions.

3. Expert Local Knowledge

Organizations like the AHLA have deep roots in their communities and possess extensive knowledge about the local areas. When motorcyclists connect with these establishments, they can often gain access to valuable insights,

including the best routes, scenic spots, and hidden gems. This local expertise enhances the overall travel experience, allowing riders to make the most of their journey.

Conclusion

Motorcycle travel is an extraordinary way to explore the world, and the relationships the CMTA is building with organizations like the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association can greatly enhance the experience. By connecting with motorcyclefriendly establishments, riders gain access to comfortable accommodations, added safety and security, and the expertise of local insiders. So, hop on your bike, hit the road, and embark on an unforgettable adventure with the help of organizations like the AHLA.

Have you heard of AGLA?

The first grazing leases were instituted in 1881. Today, there are more than 5,700 grazing leases in Alberta covering more than 8 million acres of the province. The most common grazing disposition on Crown land is the lease (other dispositions include permits, licenses, and head tax permits). These Crown lands have a designated priority use for agriculture and most are best suited to cattle grazing. The average lease in Alberta is just over a section and supports approximately 50 cows.

Grazing leaseholders undertake a significant management role on public lands; they are responsible for managing grazing, infrastructure, and property tax costs, managing other uses such as industrial activity and recreational access, and they serve to both protect and maintain environmental values. Crown

lands under grazing disposition have benefitted from the intergenerational knowledge of its stewards, and the succession of those stewards depends on security and profitability. Continued stewardship of Crown land in Alberta is reliant on the recognition of property rights in grazing leases and legislation supporting it. This is where Alberta Grazing Leaseholders Association (AGLA) comes in.

AGLA’s mission is “To protect Alberta’s grazing leaseholders from erosion of rights and property and to preserve the assets and income of grazing lease owners.” We strive to be the voice of reason in matters of land use, property rights, and surface rights. AGLA has represented the interests of leaseholders provincially, nationally, and locally since 1998 and works closely with other industry

AGLA - continued from previous

groups such as Northern Alberta Grazing Association, East Central Grazing Association, Western Stock Growers’ Association, Rocky Mountain Forest Range Association, Special Areas, and Alberta Beef Producers.

Current issues include modernization of the grazingtimber integration manual, preparing for a review of the Recreational Access Regulations, and access/liability concerns over undeveloped road allowances. And there are the ever-present conversations on recreational access and surface compensation where we continue to sit at the table to represent leaseholders.

All of the advocacy work that AGLA does is done by the volunteers that sit on the board of directors. The board is comprised of very capable leaseholders who are committed to the continual effort it takes to maintain and improve the grazing lease system. Province-wide representation on

the board is a testament to the strength of our organization. To keep costs down, AGLA directors do not take an honorarium nor do they claim expenses. The administration and other management duties is filled with a part-time contract position. AGLA is run solely on memberships and donations so the support of the membership is everything. It keeps the organization accountable and closely tied to the producers we represent.

If you are already a member, we thank you for your support and hope you continue to be a member. If you have not purchased a membership, please consider offering your support for the important work AGLA does for leaseholders. At $50 per year, it is the best deal out there for representation and advocacy.

Pet ownership and pet food trends

“Over the past few decades, the percentage of households that own a pet in Canada has grown and the numbers are increasing,” says Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with the Alberta government. “Not only has pet ownership increased, but more owners are also treating their pets like family members. In addition, there is greater demand for higher quality and more natural pet foods and treats. And as pets have become increasingly important members of the family, their owners are spending more on pet food.”

With rising pet ownership trends, Canadian pet food and treat producers have grown as an industry over the years. Retail pet food sales experienced positive growth recently despite the effects of COVID-19 on the Canadian economy. It is expected the pet ownership trend will continue. In 2023 alone, more than a million Canadians are expected to add a pet to their household. This suggests the pet population could continue to increase, and demand for pet food and other goods and services will continue to grow.

“Given the expected continued growth of pet populations, ownership and pet food retail sales, both domestically and internationally, Canadian pet food producers have an opportunity to maintain and increase their presence and distinct brand image within both domestic and global markets.”

Fernando says there are several trends in the Canadian pet food industry:

increasing demand for premium food products with the pet humanization trend

Canadian manufacturers focusing on premium food premium foods featuring local ingredients smaller local companies performing well e-commerce sales increasing

“Catering to the pets-as-family trend will continue to be an important marketing strategy into the future,” says Fernando. “As owners seek to provide pets with a happy and healthy life filled with human-like products and experiences, the market will continue to grow. There is significant opportunity for companies to develop innovative, premium products with customized formulas and functional ingredients focused on health and wellness.”
