The fires were still burning some eight hours after an explosion lit up the Mile Zero skyline Friday night.
While emergency personnel were on hand battling the blaze, just after
midnight area residents claim a fireball erupted from the scene.
At 12:11am, a fireball exploded at the property.
The Dawson Creek Fire Department said it was likely caused by a propane tank.
RCMP say the incident is not suspicious.
Crews were still on scene at 7am Saturday with the fire still burning on site, before extinguishing the outstanding fires.

B.C. adds 12K jobs in August, real estate takes a hit
Canada as a whole added 40,000 jobs, with Alberta (+18,000 jobs) serving as the biggest contributor amid 9,000 job losses in Ontario.
The stats agency also revealed B.C.’s unemployment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 5.2% compared with a month prior. The national rate remained static at 5.5%.
Employment within the finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing category took a hit in B.C., shedding 7,700 jobs amid high interest rates.
Leading into the school year, the province added 10,200 jobs to the education services category.
“Canada’s job market has been following a sawtooth pattern this year, with a soft report generally followed by a snapback,” BMO chief economist Douglas Porter said in a note.
“This was the month for a minor snapback. While August was for the most part a respectable month, it’s worth pounding home the point that Canada now needs a steady flow of jobs just to match raging population growth.”
He said 50,000 jobs are needed
monthly to hold the unemployment rate where it is.
Porter added that this month’s jobs data won’t be enough to influence the Bank of Canada’s thinking following the pause on rate hikes earlier this week.
“It’s not strong enough to prompt an immediate rethink on the pause, but it’s also certainly not soft enough to rule out further hikes,” he said.
TD senior economist James Orlando echoed those sentiments.
“Consumer spending is slowing under the weight of 475 [basis points] in rate hikes over the last 18 months, and the real estate market is rolling over again after the BoC’s June/July rate hikes,” he said in a note.
“Given that markets are pricing a 50-50 chance of another BoC hike this year, it is clear that market participants are still looking for more evidence of an economic slowdown.”

BC Hydro adds higherpowered chargers network, includes Peace
BC Hydro announced it is adding higher-powered chargers to its fastcharging network with the introduction of 180-kilowatt charging units, which can add up to 180 kilometres of driving to an average electric vehicle in about 10 minutes.
“B.C. is a leader in electric vehicle adoption and has one of the largest public electric vehicle charging networks in Canada, and we are committed to providing more options for drivers looking to charge their vehicles, especially if they are short on time,” says Hon. Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “These new higher-powered chargers have the ability to charge electric vehicles in a fraction of the time.”
In addition to being faster, the units also offer dual charging or power sharing, which allows two customers to use the same charger. For example, a 180-kilowatt charger can adjust to provide two 90-kilowatt charging units and allow more drivers to access public charging stations.
The adoption of electric vehicles across British Columbia has increased significantly. There are now more than 120,000 EVs on the road in B.C., and BC Hydro predicts there will be between 700,000 and 900,000 EVs within the next 10 years.
“Our recent research found that of the 40 per cent of British Columbians looking to purchase a new vehicle in the next three years, many are considering an electric vehicle,” says Chris O’Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro. “We are listening to the feedback from our customers who tell us they are looking for more charging options and higher-powered chargers to join our fast charging network, and we are excited to begin the installation of these 180-kilowatt units later this fall.”
The first communities expected to receive these units include Tumbler Ridge, Manning Park, Mackenzie and Surrey. BC Hydro aims to start installing these units in late fall 2023 and many of its new locations planned in 2024 will also receive these higher-powered charging units.
BC Hydro’s provincewide fast charging network currently includes 153 charging units at 84 sites in communities throughout B.C. BC Hydro is looking to add 3,000 ports to its network over the next 10 years. The chargers are funded in a partnership with the Province of B.C. and Natural Resources Canada.

Everything that we have that is worth anything is the product of labour, of the hand or of the head. That’s hardly a new idea; in fact, it was a key point in the first Labour Day editorial published on our pages — or more precisely, our predecessor, the Daily Colonist — on Sept. 2, 1894, the day before the first national holiday in honour of working people.
Beyond that, many of the points made in the 1894 editorial ring true today, noting as it does that labour should be held in high esteem.

The editorial reflects its times; for example, there are a dozen references to males in the workforce, a pointed snub of the women who were also working. (Admittedly, women employed outside the home were very much in the minority 129 years ago, but plenty of them held paying jobs.)
Saskatchewan RCMP’s top Mountie says relationships built after mass stabbing
“It seems to be one of the laws of nature that men should work for what they have,” the editorial says. “Nature furnishes them with the raw material and they must, by labour, get almost everything else for themselves.”
It also asks if we could be as happy as we are if we had nothing to do, and could get everything we required by merely wishing for it.
“What healthy-minded man would lose the pleasure of doing things? What pleasure is purer or gives more satisfaction than that which is obtained from exercising the powers of our bodies or our minds
“This is a pleasure about which very little is said, but it is one which all who have endeavoured to do anything useful have felt. Besides the enjoyment there is in the exercise of the powers of the mind and the body, that exercising is the only way of developing them.”
The 1894 editorial painted a rather bleak picture of what human life would be like without labour. “Men and women would lead a dreary animal existence, and they would be useless, unformed creatures,” it says.
“Labour, strenuous labour, continued through centuries, has transformed the savage, clad in skins and living in caves, into the civilized man who has conquered the earth and who makes all parts of
“It has changed him from a wild creature, only a little above the brutes in intellectual power, into a high-minded philosopher or a deep-thinking man of science, who has by hard and persistent labour wrung from nature her deeply-hidden secrets and made her forces obedient to his will.
“Should not labour then be held in high honour? Not one particular kind of labour, but all kinds, for they have been all necessary to the progress and the happiness of mankind.”
The editorial dismisses the idea, apparently promoted by some labour advocates, that labour and capital are natural enemies.

OPINION Nichols: brain dead
Brain dead and don’t know it.
The political proponents of the current orthodoxies, that is.
The present state of society’s tolerance for top-down political dictation of acceptable belief is beyond belief. The present state of society’s acceptance of political interference in a public servant’s pursuit of her or his duties is unacceptable.
Henry, the VIII of his name, was very fond of SirThomas More to the extent that he elevated More to the position of Lord High Chancellor of England. That’s like Next in Command. Yet More confided to his wife that, if his head could buy one castle for Henry in France, he would not hesitate to remove it from More’s body. As long as it was politically expedient to keep More in office and his head secure, More was in office intact. When Henry wanted More to approve a measure that violated More’s conscience, More’s conscientious refusal brought him to the man with the axe.
And now…A police officer is disciplined for following regular protocol when, oh horrors, her or his pursuit of duty runs counter to braindead current orthodoxies espoused by our political masters. Any idea where this leads?
Hang around a while longer and find out. An otherwise-healthy human being, not yet 38 years old, is offered euthanasia instead of the requested psychological help.
Are human beings so disposable?
In Canada?
And we tolerate such official behavior? We don’t rise in outrage to end the blight?
Lord, deliver me from falling into the hands of a perverted state!
Respected scientists, when following the science, are in danger of running afoul of current orthodoxies and the penalties are severe in the extreme even if the head remains perched on the neck. Loss of status. Loss of credentials. Loss of livelihood. Loss of friends.
Cancelled!
Without recourse, with no appeal.
For the sake of following where the science leads.
Is this where we want our once free and open country to go?
Two or three years ago I wrote that Canada was on the brink of a maelstrom. Little did I realize how close the brink!
Are we willing to accept the basic dictatorship model of the Chinese Communist Party espoused by our Dear Leader, the PM? Or is it mere apathy, ignorance, brain malfunction that permits the political pathologies of current power brokers to gain ground?
When we have the means to turn them out of office with the stroke of a pen – pencil? Don’t get me wrong. These folks are human mortals like the
rest of us. They need our prayers more than our applause.
Like ours, their time will come to die and after that, what?
So, pray for their sanity and clarity of mind but be careful when you vote.
In the meantime, the direction in which they are steering our country does not bode well for those we will leave behind.
It is the cancel culture that I rail against. Once upon a time thinking people were valued and applauded. In the universities students then crowded the lecture theatres of professors who were unafraid of losing their status for speaking their minds.
Not so now. And we call to mind names such as Dr. Byram Bridle, an exceptionally competent virologist, vaccinologist and immunologist, Dr. Julie Ponesse, a former professor of ethics who taught at Ontario’s Huron University College for 20 years, Dr. Jordan Peterson, almost a household name, psychologist, media personality, former professor.
These are some of Canada’s sacrifices on the altar of public opinion inflamed by a media funded by government.
Here’s one among countless many from the south: Peter McCulloch, cardiologist, one time vice chief of internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center and a professor at Texas A&M University.
Cancelled!
It has happened here in British Columbia to those who dared to keep their integrity in the face of official decrees that compelled silence at the price of integrity. Their integrity cost them their careers, their friends, sometimes their families. But how can one live without integrity?
I am not arguing for the rightness or wrongness of the positions these people took, although after following the science, the history, and the money for several years, I believe they were and are right.
How can we advance in knowledge if people are cancelled for questioning the official dogma? Is freedom to think, to speak, and to write gone with a one-way ticket?
As you read this column, other issues are being manufactured to take our minds and our wills in exchange for subservience, submission, silence.
We human beings were created to be free. Free to choose, free to speak, free to assemble, free to move, free to acquire knowledge, free to debate and, above all, free to be adults who make decisions for ourselves and our minor children without undue government interference.
Yes, and free to experience the consequences of our choices.

The Growing Risk of Echinococcus and it’s Risk to You and Your Pets
Written by Bailey Harper 4th year UCVM vet student
What is Echinococcus?
Echinococcus is a genus of intestinal parasites from the Cestode family found in wild canids (wolves, coyotes, arctic foxes and red foxes) and are zoonotic.
The family of Cestodes are what we call tapeworms and unlike other tapeworms, echinococcus species can cause Echinococcal disease (ED) in humans as well as in domestic dogs and cats. Typically they are spread through infected wildlife to humans and their pets.
Large Animals: 250-782-1080
Small Animals: 250-782-5616
There are two types of Echinococcus species found here in Canada and both of them have been found in BC as well as AB. Echinococcus granulosus is the more common of the two and is typically found in wolves, Echinococcus multilocularis is less common in prevalence as well as geographic spread and is found more commonly in coyotes and foxes. Both forms of Echinococcus can be found in

all wild canids which are considered their definitive hosts here in Canada. Typical parasite lifecycles usually involve only one species as the host where Echinococcus uses both intermediate hosts and definitive hosts. With definitive hosts, the parasite does not cause any clinical signs in the animal it has infected and can complete its full lifecycle from egg to adult. With intermediate hosts, the parasite can only complete part of its lifestyle, causes clinical disease signs, and the host itself needs to be ingested by the definitive host for the parasite to complete its lifecycle. For Echinococcus the intermediate hosts are usually rodents but can also be livestock, pets, or humans. In intermediate hosts the parasite egg is ingested and then an oncosphere (a larva) is released to travel through the bloodstream to different organs where it then matures and grows into a hydatid cyst. While both Echinococcus species cause ED and cysts to form in different organs in the body of intermediate hosts, E. multilocularis is the more severe form of the disease. E. granulosus causes cystic hydatid disease and typically the hydatid cysts form in the liver or lungs, but they can also form in other organs such as the spleen, kidneys, heart, or central nervous system. In the case of ED caused by E. multilocularis alveolar hydatid disease cysts form instead in these same organs. Cystic hydatid disease cysts are usually single well demarcated cysts that don’t spread where alveolar hydatic cysts are usually clusters of cysts that grow rapidly and metastasize or spread to surrounding tissues. While both forms can cause clinical signs, ED caused by E. granulosus tends to be slow growing and not cause any clinical signs for years depending on which tissue the cyst forms in. ED caused by E. multilocularis tends to cause a severe immune response, you see more acute clinical signs and clinical signs tend to be more severe. Both forms if left untreated can be fatal.
How it is spread?
Echinococcus is transferred by the eggs in the feces of definitive hosts or through the ingestion of meat containing cysts from intermediate hosts such as rodents by definitive hosts. Dogs and cats can act as both intermediate and definitive hosts meaning they can be clinically sick with ED or be clinically
unaffected and spread the disease through their feces. Typically with wild animals the disease is spread through the ingestion of rodent intermediate hosts by wild canids. These wild canids then defecate out the eggs which are ingested by intermediate hosts through contaminated grass, dirt or water and the cycle continues. Coyotes and foxes are in such close contact with urban areas it can lead to the spread to humans and pets much more easily with the eggs being in dirt and grass around the feces even if the feces themselves aren’t ingested.
Treatment
For definitive hosts, treatment is simple and involves deworming with a product that works against tapeworms. For humans and other dead end hosts treatment is much more complex and is not always successful. Surgery to remove the cysts, deworming medication, chemotherapy and percutaneous aspiration injection of chemicals and reaspiration (PAIR) are some of the treatment options for humans.
Prevention
While cases of ED are not common in Canada it IS possible and prevention of ED is much less complicated than treatment.
• Wash your hands after being in dirt that has any chance of being contaminated by wildlife feces before touching your face
• Wear gloves if you handle wild canids as the eggs can be in their fur
• Don’t ever touch the feces of wild canids without wearing gloves
• Wash and/or cook vegetables and berries that may be contaminated by wildlife feces or don’t eat them at all
• Don’t drink untreated water
• Wash your hands after petting dogs or cats that have a potential to be infected
• Don’t let your pets ingest rodents
• Treat your pets with regular deworming that includes a drug that works on tapeworms (praziquantel).
If you have any questions about treatments for deworming your pets please contact your veterinarian.

Victor James Collins
November 15, 1940
August 15, 2023
Victor Collins of Vancouver, formerly of Dawson Creek, passed away at Vancouver General Hospital on August 15th, 2023 at the age of 82 with his sisters Donna and Frances by his side.
Victor was the third born child to Walter and Margaret (Madge) Collins. He was born in St. Joseph’s hospital in Dawson Creek.
Vic graduated in 1958 from South Peace Senior Secondary. He went on to graduate from UBC with a degree in Education. He was an elementary teacher in several schools in Chetwynd and Dawson Creek and retired as the principal of Parkhill Elementary school after 25 years of service. Throughout his life Victor loved sports. He bowled, was a dynamite pitcher in the fast-pitch softball league and was an avid competitive curler. He also enjoyed playing bridge and was an excellent player.
When Vic retired to Vancouver, he bought a condo in Vancouver’s West End and lived there until his passing. He continued playing bridge, attending theater productions, reading, walking and joining his friends for the morning gabfest at Melriches Coffeehouse on Davie Street. Frequent walks in Stanley Park and along the seawall kept Victor healthy and in good shape.
Victor ate supper at Stepho’s on Davie Street and later the Olympia Greek restaurant on Denman almost every day for twenty-five years. He had “Vic’s table” by the window and the staff loved him for the gentleman he was.
Vic loved Puerto Vallarta and spent many winters there. He also had his favourite restaurant there where they celebrated his birthday each year.
Victor was predeceased by his parents Walter and Madge Collins, brother Walter Stanley (Stan) as well as brothers-in-law Ted Marsh and George Smith. He leaves to mourn four sisters Darlene Smith (Manitoba), Myrna (Herman) Frank (Switzerland,) Donna (Keith) Studley (Dawson Creek), Frances Marsh (Kamloops) and brother Ron (Lorraine) Collins (Dawson Creek), as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and many good friends.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that those wishing to do so donate to a charity of their choice in Victor’s name.
Victor you will be missed. Rest in peace!
