DC RCMP impound multiple vehicles, seize illicit drugs
Rob Brown Managing Editor
RCMP kicked off rodeo week with some frontier justice. During the first week of August, 2023, officers with BC Highway Patrol – Dawson Creek were busy keeping local highways safe through targeted enforcement
of dangerous driving behaviours. BCHP impounded nine vehicles over the course of five days, including five impaired drivers and four vehicles for excessive speed in and around the Dawson Creek area. One of these stops resulted in the driver attempting to flee the scene, but he was quickly apprehended.
A search subsequent to the arrest revealed that the driver was in possession of 52 grams of illicit drugs including suspected cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Archival efforts are underway by the Chetwynd Public Library Association to preserve the town’s newspaper, which sadly closed its doors in 2016a publication responsible for chronicling 57 years of local history.
Plans have been made to create a digital archive of The Echo online, allowing everyone to access the pages from virtually anywhere, with the ability to search keywordsmaking the paper and the history inside its pages even more accessible.
send-off to both the paper and the community, noted Larsen.
“It was basically a farewell to community type of issue, where we had letters from community members, we had memories and flashbacks,” she said. “We kind of kept it like the normal issue of the week, but also the final issue of the last 60 years.”
Larsen said she’s happy to see the newspaper being preserved through the public library, a natural fit for The Echo.

“I definitely, definitely miss that whole environment, and I miss being able to go out in the community as much as I did,” Larsen said, but also enjoys liaising in her role as the executive director for the local chamber of commerce.
It was the chamber who started the newspaper back in 1959, she explained. Covering local beats and treating them with equal importance was essential to her role.
“The seniors holding a spaghetti dinner to raise funds was just as important to have as the construction of the new municipal building or the kids doing fundraising at schools or their Christmas concerts,” Larsen said. “All that equal importance within our task, because it’s such a small town and everybody knows everybody.”
The last issue was in January of 2016 and was a
Larsen got her start in journalism at the Dryden Express in her home province of Ontario, before coming to The Echo as a reporter in 1996.
She then moved on to work for newspapers in Creston, Sparwood, and Fernie, but returned in 2006 and shortly became both editor and publisher, holding those roles until the closure in 2016.
Mike Carter was the last reporter to come through their doors, said Larsen, with the publication unexpectedly closing not long after. Carter wrote an article for the Alaska Highway News in 2016 about the closure and the impact it would leave.
The Chetwynd Public Library has been safekeeping the massive 49,089-page collection since the paper closed, ensuring its immense social value is available for the public to browse.
Both the hospital foundation and the local figure skating club are celebrating 50 years, and are two of many organizations wanting to explore the town’s past through the newspaper, noted Library Director Melissa Millsap, with residents often coming to browse the pages for family connections, important historical events, and more.
Looking after the materials and getting ready to have them archived has been a team effort, added Millsap, with Assistant Director Kyla MacDonald very involved with the initiative.
MacDonald says the archived papers are wellloved by the community, and an opportunity to socialize.
“We have long-time community members that just come to just have a peek, and if not, they’re sitting there and catching up. They are getting looked at all the time,” she said.
The newspapers will be shipped to an archival
service, as there’s no local facilities with scanning tools suitable to meet the needs of the materials being scanned. They’ll be sent to the World Archives to be processed, which will host them on their website in addition to the library’s.
“We thought at first we could just scan them, but that was very difficult, time-consuming, there was potential for pages to get lost,” said Millsap.
Grant funding for the archival work has been requested through the Peace River Regional District, asking for $26,218.56, which Area E has agreed to fund. Another half is expected to come from the District of Chetwynd - the total cost to create the digital archive is $53,113.13.

Comment: BC should fight to keep the RCMP
Turning the RCMP into a federal investigative service, and away from street-level law enforcement, would be a bad deal for B.C. communities that have relied on the Mounties for policing for nearly 75 years.
Ottawa might have its own motives for contemplating such a sea change, but within B.C. there is no valid reason to turf the RCMP. The result would be the return to a provincial police service, a patchwork of municipal departments, or the chaos of both.
Either way, the cost of such a shift would be immense. There is no doubt that the current cost of RCMP contract-policing beats the alternative.
If B.C. and its local governments were to be forced to fund a provincial police service, or start new municipal departments, small cities like Nanaimo and Prince George, for example, would see property taxes, which spiked into high single-digit increases this year, rise exponentially into the double digits and never come down again.
Provincial and community leaders better start not only sharpening their pencils to calculate the adverse economics of such a potential move, but separate fact from fiction about the RCMP. They need to be prepared for a possible fight to keep contract policing.
The Victoria and Vancouver regions, where municipal policing is well established, present a different problem. Policing costs in those regions could be brought into line by what many see as, to quote Bugs Bunny, “fightin’ woids”: creating single regional police services.
In the Capital Regional District, as observed many times before, it makes no sense to have four municipal police departments and three RCMP detachments. Rising population and density across the CRD only increase the complications in maintaining separate police services.
But in B.C.’s less densely populated areas there is no
imperative, economic or otherwise, to end RCMP contract policing. No models have surfaced showing that B.C. communities would be better served and at lower cost by provincial or municipal police.
Outside of the Victoria or Vancouver regions only one B.C. city, Nelson, has its own police service. Laying out the masses of cash that would be required to reacquire the resources the RCMP brings — from air services to dog training — would be a vast boondoggle.
If there is an economic advantage to ending contract policing in B.C. it perhaps lies east of the Rockies, in Ottawa. Mandarins there may think that B.C. communities are getting too good a deal and would rather shift those resources into something with a greater utility (to them) and higher return on investment.

3 tips for making the most of your first volunteer
2. Set realistic expectations. Find out what the volunteer organization expects of you, especially regarding time. This will prevent you from overcommitting and having a poor experience. You don’t want your volunteering experience to dominate your already busy schedule. Start small; you can al ways increase your commitment as your confidence and abilities grow.
Celebrate the importance of giving back and encourages active volunteerism in generations to come. If you’ve never volunteered, here are a few tips to ensure your first experience is as enjoyable as possible.
1. Identify your goals and skills. Ask yourself why you want to volunteer and what skills you bring to the table. Then, choose a volunteer program that matches your values and interests. This will ensure you have an impactful and meaningful experience.
3. Keep an open mind. You’ll likely work with people from all walks of life when volunteering. Therefore, it’s essential to approach the experience from a place of exchange and learning. Most importantly, have fun and be receptive to forging new friendships.
Volunteering has several benefits, including gaining realworld experience, developing new skills, expanding your professional network and exploring new occupations. Find a cause important to you and start giving back today.
How volunteering can benefit your career
Celebrate the invaluable contributions of the over 12 million volunteers in Canada. On top of the social benefits of volunteering, here are three ways that giving back to your community can boost career prospects.
1. Develop your skills. Volunteering for a cause related to your current or future career can help you expand your existing skillset and gain valuable realworld experience. After all, you’re still working, but instead of getting paid, you’re donating your time to your community.
2. Expand your network. Meeting new people through volunteering opens new doors to future paid opportunities. A strong network is essential to advancing your career. Never miss a chance to make yours bigger!
3. Build references. Professional references can be hard to come by, especially if you haven’t worked several jobs. However, they’re crucial for scoring a wellpaying gig. Fortunately, you
can ask the people you volunteer with, especially supervisors, to vouch for your employability and work ethic.
Finally, volunteering shows potential employers that you’re a wellrounded person who cares about your community. If you’re ready to become part of Canada’s extensive volunteer community, inquire about exciting opportunities in your area.

It was the kids time to shine Thursday during the annual Kiwanis Exhibition kids parade through the downtown core of Mile Zero. Rodeo Royalty and a mild-mannered newspaper editor, were on hand to help the Kiwanis hand out some hardware for best bikes, pets, more. BROWN
Barbie is coming back to Mile Zero!
Barbie is a fantastic film.
He-Man got his movie in the 1980s. Dolph! GI Joe as well, Don Johnson voiced Lt. Falcon. Then a couple GI Joe live actioners with The Rock. Transformers the Movie in the mid 1980s and subsequent live action films –another again in 2023.
When was Barbie ever getting a turn? Now is the time.
The conceit to get over is that the dolls are fairly self-aware they are dolls - much like the Toy Story crew. What they aren’t aware of is how much different the real world is compared to Barbie Land. How the dolls leave their homes (as if being held by children who are playing with them) is great stuff.
When the doll owners pick up anxiety that sometimes comes with age – the Barbies’ worlds change.
The writing here isn’t woke, it simply plays on the matriarchy and patriarchy roles that are flipped in Barbie Land vs. the real world of the movie.
In Barbie Land – Ken is an afterthought. Everything is pink,
and named after Barbie. The movie truly takes off when Ken discovers “the real world” – and mistakes his perceived patriarchal advantages – he returns to Barbie Land to take it to infantile levels. Horse medallions. Lightning power headbands.
The Barbie Dream Mansion is now the Ken Mojo Dojo Casa House. This being said - the writing combination behind the script of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach is great.
The real world is represented by Will Ferrell leading a host of Mattel Executives – and his interactions with Barbie are fantastic. As is Weird Barbie – who has short hair and marker on her face, and can do the splits because her dolls’ legs are broken. Helen Mirren plays the narrator, while Rhea Perlman is on board playing the creator of Barbie.
Margot Robbie is spot on as the title character – however doing the heavy lifting is a pair of CanucksKens Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu - both are fantastic.
A return engagement next week in the Creek!
