a note from the

editor

I

have been reveling in summer. I bought a bike, and have been hitting the roads and bike path whenever possible. My kayak and I reached a milestone of five different rivers in five trips. My local produce consumption rivals that of the most dedicated vegetarian. That’s all in my version of what summer means up here. For others, a Northern Michigan summer is marked by returning to a home or cottage that has been in the family for generations. Our travels this month took us to a resort community not far from the office — Bay View Association. Famous for a number of reasons, we delved into the stories of two cottages. What I think is interesting about the Collins and Lewis residences is how they symbolize the two ends of the Bay View spectrum. The space Anne and George Lewis have preserved for themselves and their loved

ones will celebrate 100 years in the family in 2012. There is so much family history, from furniture and paintings to the feeling of a well-loved cottage, that it seems the quintessence of Bay View. In contrast is Brian Clay Collins’ cottage, Three Seasons. Within its walls are bright colors and several collections accumulated over the years. I think he put it best when he said it’s a space to exercise interests that

don’t fit into everyday decor. Another stop on the trail was a Petoskey home that was called to our attention for its gardens. Once we saw the rest of the Davis home, we couldn’t resist featuring it as well. It’s the perfect example of a home done right at the hardworking hands of the couple that owns it. The other articles that round out this issue are a product guide featuring drawer pulls and door knobs, and a story about the elaborate bird feeders created by Mike Walton of Indian River. The attention to detail and sheer work he puts into each is fascinating. I hope you enjoy the rest of this summer season as it gives way to early fall. Happy reading!

Through the years

Lewis family keeps history threads in Bay View cottage By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

T

he cottages of Bay View have long been part of family legacies, and the Lewis cottage follows this tradition. Currently owned by Anne and George Lewis, it all started in the 1890s. Alice VanSlyke Lewis, Anne’s great-grandmother, came to Bay View as a young widow. She purchased a cottage near where The Terrace Inn now stands, spending portions of the summer here with her son, Joseph, then a toddler.  HOMelife 9

Through the years Continued from page 9

In 1912, for $400, Joseph and his mother purchased the cottage that’s been in Anne’s family for nearly 100 years, which was built in 1877. Joseph married in the mid-1930s, and Anne noted, “For all their married life, they spent every summer up here.” The cottage passed hands from her great-grandmother to grandfather, to father and now to her. In 2004, the Lewises determined it was time to renovate part of the cottage. The work was a cooperation between Timothy A. Walker Builders of Petoskey and Ray Fisher Inc. of Petoskey, formerly Fisher and Walker Builders Inc. “It was the cottage, so you did with what you had,” she noted of the years prior to the renovation. Enlisting Jonathan Lee Architects in Petoskey for the plans, the changes included adding one bathroom for a total of two throughout the home, a new kitchen and dining area, and bedroom. A beam running across the upper level’s ceiling joins the two halves. Anne said she and her husband were involved in the process, wanting to assure that it stayed true to its original life. “Our goal was to have people say ‘They did something to this cottage, but we don’t know what,’” she noted. The styling is pure Bay View, a cottage look with a historical tinge. The living room combines family history with furniture passed through the generations. An impressive display of blue and white dishes are peppered with historical books in the living room, matching blue and white furniture and pillows. “My grandmother collected blue, and I inherited her love of blue,” Anne noted. Amidst the dishes and books is a name plate engraved with VanSlyke that belonged to Anne’s great-grandmother, and her watercolor artwork is displayed on a wall. “Everybody feels a little nostalgic about what’s in here,” Anne said. Anne Lewis’ love of blue came from her grandmother, and many items passed down through the generations embrace the theme.

Remember that feeling?

Watercolors by Anne Lewis’ great-grandmother hang near the front entrance of the cottage.

Continued from page 10

Nearly all the rooms of the home afford views of Little Traverse Bay, and a wrap-around porch takes full advantage of the cottage’s position. Large windows in the kitchen extend almost wall height so no view is obscured from the work area, sitting area or dining table. Upstairs are four bedrooms and one bath. Old quilt samplers and needlepoint work hang on the walls alongside framed prints, and several of the rooms feature antique toys. Three of the rooms are part of the original cottage, each quaint and slightly varied. The fourth bedroom is larger, part of the addition, and a bathroom was added to the upstairs to accommodate the family crowd that finds its way north each summer. Anne’s involvement with Bay View goes beyond the Lewis cottage, and volunteering has been a large part of her experience there. Among her activities has been 25 years with the museum. “I want Bay View to be preserved for future generations, just like it was for me,” she noted. Her future generations, children and grandchildren, make time each summer to visit for as much time as they can. “Everyone’s so transient today, it’s nice to have an anchor. This is our anchor,” Anne said. HL 14

H

eading to the cottage is a way to release the boundaries of home life. And for Brian Clay Collins, an interior designer in independent practice based in Grosse Pointe, heading to Three Seasons in Bay View is an escape to a “riot of color.” His downstate home is a sea of blacks, taupes and whites, and the cottage is where the color lives. “This is a happy party house, and it’s the antithesis of the house in Grosse Pointe,” Collins noted. The breakfast room greets 

A plush patio Right off the breakfast room, in what most would consider the backyard but is in fact the main entrance, lies a patio. The verdant space is dappled by light from the trees’ canopy on sunny days, always providing shelter as the sun makes its trip across the sky. Lower to the ground, lush ferns form a fencelike border above a dry-stacked stone wall, whose pieces came from the front yard when the porch was added. Moss creeps over the stones, adding another green hue to the space. Garden seats and wrought iron furniture are placed throughout, and potted plants add pops of color. Ivy from Willson’s Garden Center in Petoskey and flats of begonias and geraniums join cyclamen and kalanchoes. “I want it to look good from (Memorial Day) on,” said homeowner Brian Clay Collins.

those who come in from the patio. Striped chairs are nestled up to a glass table, atop which sits a white glazed, terra cotta sculpture that looks like an artichoke. A collection of plates, varying in size, theme, age and color, are clustered and spread across the walls. Another layer of texture and intrigue comes from the seashellswirled stained glass pendant light in the middle of the ceiling. Rounding the corner and a few short steps through the kitchen is a dining room. Collins said the walls were paneling and the ceiling acoustic tile, a look that was not going to work with where the home was headed design-wise. Now, a swathe of green and cream fabric tents the walls and ceiling, along with an L-shaped banquette. The room also showcases a stunning, staggered selection of cake plates that span the color spectrum, stacked one on top the other. This room leads to the living space, whose vivid red walls form a backdrop for what’s within them. The red plays to the setting sun that “vibrates with color at this time,” Collins added. Crystal covered compotes and sweetmeat dishes line the windows. Pairs are more rare than singles, and the location against the panes allows the display to capture and redistribute light, especially around day’s end. “This room, when the sun is going down, it’s an orange glow,” Collins said. Upstairs are four guest bedrooms and the master, each with a different mood and color palette. The master features a black and white toile on paper in an Asian pattern with vines, people, bridges and garden structures, which covers the walls up to the peak of the ceiling. Along with one other bedroom, the ceiling was raised from seven feet to the roofline, creating dramatic and intriguing lines. Bell windows were added to the angles to let in natural light. screened balcony. Set upon its hardwood floor is a table and two leaf-shaped chairs, perfect for taking in the bay view and a cup of coffee in the morning. The colors echo those of the exterior, with black walls run through with a stripe of green. The main guest bedroom features similar elements to the master but has a completely different feel. Floral wallpaper, with a black background, covers the walls and ceiling, from which is suspended an amber glass chandelier. A large painting of a monkey leading a dog adds whimsy to the space. Collins said it took years after the purchasing the cottage in 1990 to come up with an appropriate name, but Three Seasons encompasses the drive to spend as much time there during Bay View’s open season as possible. It’s opened up the first weekend and closed the last. “It’s not a four-season resort, but it’s a three-season,” he said. HL

An ever-changing Petoskey home

his Petoskey home is in a state of constant motion. And it has been since 1987, when it was built. “I’ve been known to come home on a Friday night, get a gallon of paint, and paint a room before I go to bed,” said Irene Davis, who owns the home with her husband, Jeff. This theme of acting on inspiration has guided the design of the home over the years. “We find stuff in magazines, and say ‘Let’s do it,’” Irene said. “If you were to come back in a year or two, it would be different,” added Jeff. The color scheme throughout much of the main level builds off the basics of black and white. The master bedroom walls feature 6-foot-tall white beadboard topped with molding. The rest of the wall is done in Behr Fudgesicle, with the ceiling a few shades lighter. The black bed frame and headboard are a bold contrast in the center of the room. The bathroom off the living room features black, white and green accents, which pop against Behr French Gray walls. But the main attraction of the room is a large soaker tub against the far wall.  HOMelife 23

Irene said she saw it in a magazine and knew she had to have it. While the living room has stayed essentially the same for a couple years, it’s the accents that change. “I’m forever making different pillows,” Irene said. There’s a sense on whimsy in the space, too. A giraffe stretches tall near the entertainment center, and other animals join in the decor. Recently, an accent wall was switched to thick stripes, and various mirrors reflect natural window light throughout the room. The kitchen has undergone some of the most dramatic changes over the years. A wall used to stand where a bar counter now separates the space from the living room. The ceiling’s transformation came last Christmas with a need to improve the lighting from one overhead ceiling fan. Beadboard and beams were installed by Jim Davenport of Davenport Construction Inc. in Petoskey. In do-it-yourself fashion, the pantry was 24

changed many years ago into a desk. A stand of drawers, which came from the main lower cabinets of the kitchen, was removed to make space for a trash compactor. A matching stack was purchased, along with a long drawer, and the desk was assembled. A bit of beadboard underneath ties the unit with the rest of the room. A large glass door in the living room and

a door off the kitchen give access to a raised deck, which overlooks lush garden beds. The garden was planned and planted by family friend Jason Bock. “I just told him that we wanted some kind of flower garden back there,” Irene noted. What they have is a garden that wraps around the house, burgeoning with green leaves and blooms.

The existing rock was dug up and the borders were reshaped and sculpted. Off the deck are raised beds, and in the height of the summer the plants there stretch above the railing. Many of the plants were moved to

where conditions better suited them. Now Irene said she and Jeff have no intendaisies, hydrangeas and peonies burst with tions to ever move, but their home will color next to hostas, ferns and tall grasses. continue to change over the years. A house like mine

Indian River man crafts mini replicas for birds

B

By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

efore Mike Walton retired, there was a joke around the office. “I was going to retire, move up north and build bird houses — and now I’m doing it,” the Indian River resident deadpanned. The home-inspired bird feeders he crafts are one-of-a-kind in construction. Walton built his first bird feeder last year. He and his wife, Linda,

were talking about how they wanted one of the perches for their home, so he decided to make one. Then, he decided it should be a replica of their home. “When he does things, he tends to go overboard,” Linda said with a laugh. The bird feeder measures about 32 inches long by 20 inches wide, 24 if you count the porch. Walton

took measurements of his home and after some math, came up with the dimensions for the 3/4-inch scale model. The number of logs on the walls of the feeder matches the number of logs on the walls of his home. Walton owned a glass company for 25 years in Ann Arbor and remodeled several of the homes the couple lived in, so construction

wasn’t something entirely novel. What was new was building on such a small scale. The feeders incorporate Michigan white pine and cedar. Walton starts with pieces of various sizes and uses a medley of tools to get the pieces how he needs them. A table saw is used for ripping boards to size, a band saw to cut them to length and a chop saw for cutting angles on trim and roof pieces. But his favorite tool is one they stopped manufacturing — a Sheffield knife equipped with a razor blade, used to whittle the wooden pieces to appear like logs. “They’re truly hand hewn,” Walton said. The same attention to detail goes into the cedar shake roofs. Walton begins with cedar shake shingles, running them through a table saw to make them appropriately thin, then buzzing them to length. Stone culled locally is sanded and sorted by size, then placed as ground cover or nestled into a masonry compatible caulk for chimneys. Each feeder has two signatures — a hand-carved fish with “Mike Walton” punched into it and a cross, generally camouflaged amid the stonework. Walton’s inspiration for the cross came from his time in the Ann Arbor area. He recounted a story of a man in Ypsilanti who laid a cross in the stonework of the city’s water tower during construction in 1889. To date, Walton has made five feeders and is at work on his sixth. Several were homes, but he has also created one in the likeness of the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse near Munising; the sixth feeder he is working on also emulates the lighthouse. Walton’s work is available at Blooming Ideas in Indian River, (231) 238-4111, and Sturgeon River Pottery in Petoskey, (231) 347-0590. For more information, contact Walton at (231) 238-2072. HL
