Russ Cage, Williamsburg Honoring John McCain, 2020 When I think ahead to 2020 and ponder how to truly honor the legacy of John McCain, here’s what comes to mind: President Jodi Ernst, President Lindsey Graham (Sen. McCain’s best friend), President Nikki Haley, President John Kasich, President James Mattis, President Mike Pompeo, President Ben Sasse … and many others both inside and outside of Washington, D.C. They each have varying degrees of expertise, and they are all “imperfect,” as Senator McCain once described himself.

But had they been elected in 2016, all would have nominated conservative judges, and all would have presented a major tax cut bill (though some would have preferred cuts less massively favoring corporations and the super-rich). These were essentially slam-dunks, not accomplishments.

Kudos My thanks to the editors for assigning writer Clark Miller to check me out after I somehow showed up on their list of 20 Fascinating People for 2018. I have lived a long time and done a lot of things in several different fields and, thus, doubted he could find a way to put all the important stuff into a 350-word article. But, in their wisdom, the editors put a real honest-togoodness print journalist on the job — and I am truly grateful for his flattering portrait of a guy with a bit much on his platter most of the time.

I did take time this past weekend to read the articles on the other 19 chosen for exposure, and I must say that I am truly honored to be on the same list with such an impressive group of doers and thinkers and believers. I would like to meet all of them and get to know them better. How about hosting a dinner and making my wish come true?

The Case for Nuclear Little-known fact: On Aug. 19, 2000, a 30-inch El Paso Natural Gas pipeline failed from corrosion and exploded where a bridge carried it across a riverbed south of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Twelve people camping beneath the bridge died in the explosion and ensuing fire.

This sounds like an isolated incident, but the damage to it and two nearby pipelines reduced the supply of natural gas to California by 30 percent, and natural gas is California’s favorite electric generating fuel. It is no surprise that the 2000-2001 California power crisis arrived shortly after. It was allegedly engineered by Enron but actually had its roots in a completely unrelated company two states to the east.

Few people know these facts and even fewer can connect the dots.

We need to connect the dots and act before problems blow up in our faces.

The entire USA is repeating the mistakes which led to the California and other power crises. We are foolishly making everything run on natural gas because it is cheap (until suddenly it’s not), oblivious to the risk of relying on just-in-time delivery of a resource that is both disruptable and oversubscribed in times of greatest need. To have energy security, we need to have large stockpiles of energy already placed where it is needed. Without energy security, we have no security of any kind.

The biggest stockpiles of energy in the state of Michigan, aside from our oil and gas wells, are the uranium fuel rods in the four nuclear reactors at Palisades, Fermi, and Donald C. Cook. When fresh, the fuel in their reactor cores is equivalent to roughly 3.9 billion-with-a-B gallons of fuel oil. Their combined 4159 megawatts of generating capacity is there at 99+ percent reliability when we need it the most. And best of all, they emit zero atmospheric pollutants.

We can’t afford to lose our nuclear plants.

It’s literally a matter of life and death.

But, to the best of my knowledge, none of the above: Hid behind doctors to escape military service; hides behind auditors to escape revealing embarrassing financial information; hides behind lawyers to avoid the consequences of bankruptcies, affairs, and suspicious business and political activities; hides behind speeches, tweets, and friendly media to avoid answering tough questions. Additionally, none except the current president has belittled and berated John McCain, a truly great and good American.

According to polls, over thirty million Republicans will always support and defend our current president. That is their right as citizens, and I respect that right. But I appeal now to other Republicans. There are at least 10 million of you who have grave doubts, and the time is now to begin talking.

At Bible study and cocktail parties, in board rooms and barber shops, the time is now to engage friends, neighbors, colleagues, and elected officials — let them know there are vastly better alternatives available in 2020.

Regardless of the results of the Mueller investigation, our nation deserves men and women of character to be our next president.

Begin by considering the people mentioned above, or offer up your own candidate.

In 2020, you can elect a man or woman who is both conservative and honorable, both strong and kind, both confident and humble — who inspires our better angels.

John McCain deserves nothing less.

A Jump Start for a Town Square

Rotary Charities gave a $1 million boost to plans for the creation of a town square in Traverse City.

The grant to the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority will be used to develop what’s to be known as “Rotary Square,” a gathering place in the heart of downtown to be located at the northeast corner of Cass and State streets on property that’s currently used for parking.

Jean Derenzy, the DDA’s CEO, said a civic square that could host year-round events has been part of plans for downtown for a quarter century.

The $1 million gift is timed to coincide with Rotary’s 100th anniversary and in the memory of J.T. Milliken, the first Rotary Club president.

“We are very proud of our 100-year legacy as the Rotary Club of Traverse City,” said Beth Karczewski, chair of Rotary’s Centennial Grant Committee. “We couldn’t imagine a better way to honor our history than to create a community asset in the old Milliken’s parking lot.”

Our appreciation for working men and women seems to have waned at about the same pace as our devaluation of unions. Unions helped secure wages, benefits, and improved working conditions, but politicians decided they were a bad thing. Never mind that it was those jobs that drove our industrial expansion.

By 1954, there were nearly 38 million union workers in the United States. Now there are about 14.5 million. They represent about 10 percent of the total workforce, about half what it was just 35 years ago. As unions vanished, so, too, did many employee benefits.

Employer-paid healthcare and defined benefit pension systems are now a rapidly disappearing anachronism. Neither were sustainable as traditionally configured, the costs overwhelming the good intentions.

Even now, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, companies that provide health insurance employee benefits pay about 83 percent of the employee cost and 72 percent

In fact, the trades are one of the areas continuing to need more workers. Robots can’t yet fix your frozen and burst pipes, install your duct work, rewire your garage door, or frame a house on-site. But fewer and fewer young people are interested in the trades, and jobs go wanting then disappear as Baby Boomers retire.

What job sectors are likely to see significant increases by 2026? The BLS projects the biggest gains in professional and business services, healthcare and social assistance, and leisure and hospitality — all service-driven fields. And all industries that often don’t pay high wages or offer benefits. (Not surprisingly, they also project increases in the number of both federal and state employees.)

There are some workers who are doing very well, indeed. Chief executive officers (CEO)

All of which hasn’t much deterred workers, except in their bank accounts. American employees are a resilient bunch. We moved from the farms to the city, changed from an agrarian society to an industrial one, created new industries and new jobs, and moved along.

Yet our workers have always been a little behind. Whatever the economic woe — inflation, recession, political stupidity — it’s workers who take the biggest hit. Even now, in a strengthening economy with low unemployment and a booming market, real wage growth has increased the least.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an arm of the Department of Labor, projects significant job declines in manufacturing, construction and information services by 2026. Manufacturing will be automated, information provided by artificial intelligence, and construction is simply running out of workers.

According to Forbes, even the big corporate tax break hasn’t much helped workers. Only 5 percent of the companies that benefited from the cut shared any with their employees in the form of raises or bonuses. Five percent.

Some workers have been, or will be, replaced by automation in the form of smart robotics. Most blue collar jobs will be nearly gone by the time a child born today is old enough to work.

are having one banner year after another. Big corporations are now required to disclose the difference in pay between their CEO and the median income of their worker bees.

On average, CEOs of the largest Fortune 500 companies earn 339 times more than their worker’s median. McDonald’s CEO earned 3,100 times what those loyal kids behind the counter make, but the winner was Mattel, whose CEO earned a staggering 4,987 times his median employee salary. The company’s excuse? Half its employees work in Malaysia for less than $7,000 a year.

Our children are facing an economy with jobs that start with low pay and don’t get much better. And we already have stagnant wages, few benefits, and little job security. We’ve given our workers a day but not much else.

Speaking of difficult jobs, those intrepid school bus drivers will be at it again this week.

Imagine your worst carpool nightmare multiplied by 10, five days a week.

This is a reminder that when those yellow buses stop with red lights flashing, you have to stop. Whether you’re behind the bus or approaching it, you must stop.

Those flashing red lights mean they are either loading or off-loading children, some of whom can be unpredictable. So just stop. The buses have cameras: Don’t stop, and you will be photographed and lucky to get away with only big fines.

Crime & Rescue TEEN ACCIDENTALLY STABBED A 15-year-old was stabbed in the stomach while he and a group of friends drank alcohol and played with knives in a garage.

Missaukee County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home on Rhoby Road in Forest Township where they found the male teenager had suffered a serious stab wound. The victim was taken to a hospital in Grand Rapids.

Deputies determined that one of the teenagers threw a large knife and, while attempting to hit a wall, struck the victim instead. The incident happened at 1am Aug. 28.

WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER CRASH A 60-year-old Cedar woman was arrested for drunk driving after she struck a tree and rolled into a ditch.

Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies were first alerted about the woman at 2pm Aug. 25 after someone called 911 to report that she had left a residence on East Gauthier Road following an argument and that she was intoxicated.

A half-hour later, another call came into dispatchers. This time someone reported a rollover crash in Centerville Township near the intersection of East Amore and South Popp roads. When deputies arrived, they found the woman that the first caller had reported.

The woman was taken to Munson Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, and deputies sent a report to prosecutors seeking secondoffense drunk driving charges.

CHARGES: WOMAN SOLD DRUGS TO TNT A woman who allegedly sold Suboxone to an undercover police officer in Traverse City faces drug delivery charges.

Angela Dawn Miller, a 34-year-old McBain woman, sold the drug that’s often used by opiate addicts in recovery to a Traverse Narcotics Team officer twice in late July and August, according to the charges. She sold the Suboxone strips for $10 each and arranged through Facebook to meet the buyer at an address on S. Garfield Road.

The woman informed the buyer in late August that she was scheduled to get more Suboxone through a prescription, according to the charges. She was arrested soon after.

DUMP TRUCK CRASHES AND SPILLS A dump truck crashed through a guardrail on I-75, rolled over, and spilled asphalt down an embankment.

Cheboygan County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the crash site in Ellis Township near Rondo Road at 7:18am Aug. 23.

Deputies determined that the driver of the 1995 International dump truck, a 25-year-old Boyne City man, was travelling north when a tire blew, causing him to lose control. The vehicle veered into a guardrail and crashed in the median, spilling its load as it overturned down an embankment.

The driver sought his own treatment for minor injuries.

FIRE FOLLOWED BUSINESS The two men were business associates DISAGREEMENT for a decade before they parted in a A failed business relationship allegedly separation “that did not end amicably,” led one of the partners to resort to arson. according to the charges.

John Lester Anderson, 52, faces charges of second-degree arson, seconddegree home invasion, and being an habitual offender following an Aug. 19 fire at a house under construction on M-72 in Garfield Township.

The alleged victim was staying the night in a pole barn on the property, where he had set up surveillance cameras, according to the charges. The cameras captured Anderson approach the pole barn, attempt to kick in the door, and then walk to the scene of the fire just prior to it being set, according to the charges.

Cell phone location data placed Anderson at the scene, and Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s investigators found a stained sweatshirt in Anderson’s home that matched the one worn by the suspect. He also told police that he visited his former business partner’s property that night but that he had no memory of starting a fire.

KEWADIN MAN CATFISHED BY POLICE A Kewadin man faces charges after he propositioned someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl but who turned out to be a state police investigator.

Philip John Loew faces charges of using a computer to commit a crime and accosting a child for immoral purposes.

The 53-year-old friended, sent sexually explicit messages to, and attempted to meet a teenage girl he thought was named Shayla; but Shayla was a fictional person and her profile was an “investigative Facebook account” that was created by a state police trooper, according to the charges.

Loew admitted to investigators that he had arranged sexual contact with several other young girls this way in the past but that he believed each of them was 16 years old, according to the charges.

Three years ago, our family moved into a newer home in a quiet neighborhood on the south side of Traverse City. We fell in love with the mature trees in the front yard, and my husband and I looked forward to having an attached garage for the first time in our adult lives. But our favorite feature was a small private patio and garden that we could enjoy through French doors from the den.

Shortly after moving in we purchased and stocked several feeders, and I was thrilled to receive a birdbath for my first Mother’s Day in the house. It became a habit to watch for wildlife while drinking our morning coffee from the comfort of the couch. We saw an incredible variety of birds — from cardinals and blue jays to sparrows and doves. Squirrels and chipmunks scavenging the seeds beneath the feeders and cottontail rabbits kept our weeds in check. And one rainy day, we even saw a red fox running through the side yard to take shelter on our porch!

Most shockingly, the project finds that the felines typically spent one-third of every day hunting and killing small animals — and not just mice; free-roaming cats hunt and kill more than 80 native species.

But the following year, as winter turned to spring, we noticed a marked decrease in the number of birds enjoying the buffet, while more outdoor cats were stopping by for our attention. Only after my daughter wrestled a baby rabbit away from one of these kitties did we make the connection. Best case scenario: These cats were scaring the wildlife away. Worst: They were maiming and killing our little woodland friends (we nursed the rabbit for a day before placing it in a makeshift nest where it sadly disappeared the following day).

According to a 2013 study by scientists from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the Fish and Wildlife Service, domestic cats in the United States slaughter a median of 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals annually. By comparison, if these cats were killing people, every year they would wipe out the entire world population. Twice.

The domestic cat is one of the single greatest human-linked threats to wildlife in the nation. More birds and mammals die at the paws of cats than are killed by cars, chemicals, and poisons, or collisions with buildings and windmills combined.

“Cats are responsible to the extinction of at least 33 species of birds that we know about,” says former Director of the American Bird Conservancy George Fenwick. “They are for the most part fed and inoculated, with no natural enemies, which makes them a sort of super-predator.”

Most environmentalists and animal lovers agree that cats shouldn’t be allowed to prowl around the neighborhood any more than a pet dog, pony, or potbellied pig should. Some go so far as to say that owners who insist that their kitties are entitled to a bit of freedom

The University of Georgia’s Kitty Cam Project (where miniature cameras are attached to the collars of indoor-outdoor pet cats to track their daily routines) has shown them lapping up antifreeze and raw sewage, dodging moving vehicles, and fighting with much larger animals, for example.

So, this is what we know: One in three cats kill prey; of these, they average about two kills per week; 21 percent of these killers bring their victims home; 30 percent of their kills are eaten; and 49 percent are left to suffer, die, and eventually rot.

Keep in mind these are well-fed, domesticated house cats. They’re not killing for food; they’re doing it for sport. And the corpses we see account for less than a quarter of the actual body count.

How do we remedy this? Experts recommend “conservation and policy intervention” in order to reduce the impact of bloodthirsty felines. And some, like New Zealand economist and environmentalist Gareth Morgan, have proposed more drastic measures. He urges cat owners to neuter their pets and resist the temptation to add any more to their households. He has also called upon property owners to set traps in order to catch stray cats so they can be put down.

So now that you know the truth, will you do your part to help save our fragile urban ecosystem? I encourage you to stop being an accessory to the killing and join other responsible pet owners by simply keeping your cats inside or building an enclosure for them.

Mmm, Tastes Like Chicken In Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Aug. 17, a friendly game at Southers Marsh Golf Club turned ugly when Derek Harkins, 46, and an unnamed 57-year-old man got into a brawl on the 18th hole. But you gotta hand it to Harkins: The Patriot Ledger reported that he pointedly ended the fight by biting off the other man’s finger up to the knuckle, according to Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri. The victim, from Marshfield, was taken to the hospital, but his finger could not be reattached. Harkins was arrested at the scene and charged with assault and battery, mayhem and disturbing the peace.

Undignified Death The happiest place on Earth couldn’t work its magic on Aug. 15 when a worker at nearby Harvest Power fell into a vat of oil and grease from Walt Disney World. The plant in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, recycles the resort’s food waste, then converts it into renewable energy and fertilizer. John Korody, 61, and another worker were emptying the contents of a semitruck into a vat when Korody slipped on a grate and fell into the vat. His co-worker tried to pull him out, but the fumes overtook them both, and Korody slid farther in, according to The Washington Post. The Reedy Creek Fire Department responded, but Korody was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smooth Reaction Debbie L. McCulley, 57, of Salem, Virginia, has been banned from all future Floyd County High School sporting events but, on the bright side, her indecent exposure case may eventually be dropped, following an incident area lawyers are calling “moon over Floyd.” McCulley’s husband, Mark, is the JV softball coach for Glenvar High School, and the charges resulted from Debbie’s unusual reaction to her husband’s team’s loss to Floyd County in May. She “stood on or close to the pitcher’s mound and pulled down her pants with her right hand to expose her right butt cheek,” according to Floyd County Sheriff ’s Deputy G.H. Scott. But Debbie told the officer that her husband had confronted the opposing coach after the game, and she was afraid he would be “attacked,” so she was trying to divert attention from the two men. The Roanoke Times reported that Debbie wrote a letter of apology and will be performing community service. Chris Robinson of the Virginia High School League noted that crowd behavior at games is “probably leaning a little bit in the wrong direction.”

Weird Science United Press International reported that a 42-year-old British woman saw her eye doctor after experiencing swelling and drooping of her eyelid earlier this year. After performing an MRI, doctors discovered a cyst and performed surgery, during which they found a hard contact lens embedded in the eyelid. It turns out that the patient had suffered a blow to the eye 28 years ago and had assumed the lens fell out. She experienced no symptoms until the recent discomfort.

Annoying -- After 16 years, neighbors of “Eva N.” in Sturovo, Slovakia, have gotten relief from her particular brand of torment, reported the BBC. From morning until night, the woman

had played a four-minute aria from Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” over and over, with her speakers on full blast. “The whole street is suffering,” complained one resident. At first, the music-lover played the music to drown out a neighbor’s barking dog, but continued the practice until Aug. 6, when she was arrested for harassment and malicious persecution. If found guilty, she could face between six months and three years in prison.

-- A pothole in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, got a new life as a vegetable garden this summer after area residents grew weary of waiting for the city to repair it. The hole, which is several feet deep, had been expanding for months, neighbors said. So they filled it with tomato plants, which are now ripening and getting so tall they require wire cages for support.

Now, “It’s sort of, like, become the community garden,” resident Bryan Link told CBC Radio.

Finally, Mayor John Tory has agreed to not only fill the pothole, but to move the tomato plants to a community garden.

Unexpected Hazard An unnamed Irish teenager’s hiking outing became fodder for any number of bad punsters after the boy was hit by a falling sheep while walking in Northern Ireland’s Mourne Mountains. The sheep fell from a crag on Aug. 17 and landed on the boy, who was treated for potential injuries to his head, neck, back, abdomen and leg. “It is believed the sheep was uninjured and left the scene unaided,” reported Metro News. Punny comments on a social media post made by the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team included: “Mutton been looking where he was going, I bet he’s feeling a little sheepish now” and “Ewe want to be careful on the mountains!!”

Inexplicable On an Aug. 17 flight between Chicago and Narita International Airport in Tokyo, a 24-year-old American man, who was reportedly unprovoked, urinated on a 50-yearold Japanese man sitting two rows behind him.

The younger man had consumed at least four glasses of champagne and one cup of sake before the incident, police told Japan Today, and claimed not to remember what he had done.

He was restrained aboard the remainder of the flight and turned over to police in Tokyo.

Oops Pennsylvania State Police told Lehigh Valley Live that Evan T. Kasick, 52, of Upper Milford Township, was injured on Aug. 16 when he wrecked his motorcycle — in his own driveway. Kasick sped into his driveway around 7:30 p.m. and struck a concrete barrier, causing him to be thrown from the Honda bike. He was taken to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries, and police issued a ticket for driving at an unsafe speed. In his driveway.

Compelling Explanation Near Mason City, Iowa, on Aug. 20, the Iowa State Patrol pulled over a Ferrari 488 Spider that was clocked going 137 mph during a rainstorm. “Not a great idea to drive this fast in the rain,” the trooper posted on Facebook with a photo of the radar readout.

The unnamed driver, however, wasn’t fazed; she thought she was going “around 100.” Fox News reported that if ticketed in a 70-mph zone (the highest speed limit in Iowa), her fine would be $335.

Bring them your long-haired hippies, your women, migrants, and LGBT folks

Traverse City’s Human Rights Commission has spent the last 50 years fighting for each era’s underdogs. But with an entire country at odds around them, can the battle-weary HRC continue its fight?

ifty years ago, in August 1968, a citizens’ advisory committee proposed for Traverse City what would then be called the Human Relations Commission, later to be known the Human Rights Commission, a nine-member board that would go on to advocate for minority rights, women’s rights, the LGBT community, long-haired hippies, aggrieved tenants, and just about anyone who felt they’d been the victim of an injustice.

It took a few years to get going, but once it did, the first topic taken up by the commission was migrant labor. Board members wanted to make sure seasonal workers were treated with respect and fairness in the community.

Although Traverse City, like the rest of the country, has seen progress on countless fronts, the argument over who belongs — and who doesn’t — is an even more divisive issue than it was 50 years ago. Last year, things got particularly ugly when the commission considered making a recommendation that Traverse City be designated a “sanctuary city” for immigrants, a measure that was dropped amid furious opposition.

After that experience, Taylor Nash, chair of the commission, said he has come to the conclusion that the division in society and the tone of the debate has gotten so toxic that, before the HRC can hope to take on any larger issues, it must work toward a basic one: simply getting people to talk to one another again.

“It got pretty intense,” he said. “I knew

there was a big divide in this country before we experienced that, but that really hit it home for me in a way that I hadn’t directly experienced before.”

“THE PIGS AND THE FREAKS” When the HRC started out so many years ago, its members managed to advance human rights by getting people to work together, said James McCormick, a nowretired judge who moved to Traverse City in 1969 and was asked to join the HRC soon after.

At the same time, the board understood its limits. McCormick said the commission was only created by a group of uniformly conservative Traverse City commissioners because they knew that its creation would make the city eligible for certain federal funding.

“It wasn’t that the city fathers — and they were fathers — thought, ‘Gee, wouldn’t it be nice to have a commission that was going to deal with all sorts of social issues,’” he said.

“We were struggling a little bit to figure out who we were and what the expectations were from the city, and I think they let us know fairly quickly they didn’t want us doing anything too radical.”

The first area where McCormick recalls that the board made progress was in confronting the tension between the police and the hippies. The latter, in those days, populated the city in large numbers and liked to loiter on Front Street, upsetting business owners. McCormick said everyone referred to the two sides as “the pigs and the freaks.”

The HRC arranged to have a few hippies and a few police officers get together for informal talks. McCormick said some of the meetings took place at his house.

“The police started off very reticent, but after a couple of meetings, everyone relaxed,” he said. “The hippies agreed to being off of the street by a certain time and no drugs downtown.”

Soon after that, McCormick said, a businesswoman came to the HRC to complain that when she attempted to have lunch at a restaurant known as the place where businessmen made deals, she was asked to leave.

“I was assigned to that case, and I said, ‘Well let’s test it.’ … She and I met there for lunch,” McCormick said. “Sure enough, someone came up to us and said, ‘Sorry.’ I could be served but she could not be served.”

The HRC approached the owner, who was a woman. She was unwilling to change her restaurant’s policy because she thought it would be bad for business. She wanted a place where businessmen could feel comfortable discussing whatever they wanted to discuss, and she believed men would not be comfortable talking in their presence. “‘Women are gossips. They can’t help themselves,’ she said,” McCormick said.

“After some pressure from us, she changed her mind.”

MORE DIVISIVE TODAY Next up during McCormick’s tenure was the appearance of Third Level crisis center, which opened in a residential neighborhood

near the Traverse City Golf & Country Club in the early 1970s. Some neighbors were incensed because Third Level offered drug treatment, and they feared it would bring addicts into their neighborhood.

“The neighborhood went kind of berserk, and they actually chose leaders,” he said. “It was a fairly big controversy, and it was brought to the HRC. Probably the city thought that was a good place to dump it.”

McCormick and his fellow HRC members decided the solution would be, once again, to bring people together to talk.

They organized meetings where residents could talk about their concerns, and they convinced Third Level to establish a neighborhood liaison who could be called if trouble arose.

That calmed down the tension, more or less, until a few years later when Third Level moved to another site, McCormick said.

Perhaps, McCormick said, the HRC is lower profile and seemingly less effective today because city leadership is so much more progressive, unlike in those early days.

Also, it helped early on that many of the conservative residents of Traverse City were conservative in the model of former Gov. William Milliken, a Traverse City native who was a moderate Republican and who supported human rights.

“It might be more of a divisive thing today because of the sharp division between the right and left,” he said.

Immigration certainly wasn’t the same kind of issue then as it is today. Back then, most people felt warmly toward migrant workers and understood the importance

of the migrant community to the area’s economy, he said.

“Everybody felt very positive about the migrants — it was kind of patriarchal. People said, ‘Our migrants are good people, and we take good care of them,’” he said.

FROM TENANT RIGHTS TO GAY RIGHTS In the 1980s and early 1990s, members of the HRC took on topics like whether middle school boys should be able to play girls sports and vice versa. The commission also got into the middle of a heated debate over landlordtenant rights during the period when it was led by Sara Hardy, a city leader who became the namesake for an annual award given out by the HRC. That award celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.

In the last couple decades, much of the commission’s work has focused on LGBT rights.

Attorney Blake Ringsmuth applied to join the commission soon after he moved back to his hometown in the late 1990s.

He served on the commission when a notorious attack occurred outside of the gay nightclub SideTraxx, which led the city to create rainbow bumper stickers, which caused a police officer to protest the placement of the stickers on patrol cars, which made Traverse City a temporary subject of national news reports and brought anti-gay crusader Fred Phelps to town.

The HRC once again found itself moderating between the police and a marginalized group. Ringsmuth said he was disturbed about the police officer’s protest. He recalled: “I won’t forget this. He said, ‘My war is not with homosexuals, it’s with homosexuality.’

And I was like, ‘Well, wait a minute, you’re walking the streets as a police officer with community members who are gay, who are homosexual. How does that work?’”

An “anti” gay rights ordinance, one that would have prevented city commissioners from prohibiting discrimination against

the LGBT community, was attempted, and it failed. Later, an ordinance prohibiting discrimination passed overwhelmingly.

Ringsmuth said he is proud of the progress Traverse City made on gay rights, and that it demonstrated to him that he made the right choice to move back.

“I didn’t want to come back to Traverse City because of my perception growing up here, that it was so white-bread and conservative. I had been exposed as a child and in my education to other cultures, other beliefs, other ways of life that I thought were equally as valid,” he said. “I had a perception that that was not accepted here in Traverse City, and if I was going to live here, I wanted to do what I could [to change that].”

To Ringsmuth, the fact that the HRC took up the “sanctuary city” debate last year and that it went nowhere and caused such ugly division is not a sign that the city has taken a step backwards.

“I think that 20 years ago, no one would have said boo about that, and we would never have even talked about being a sanctuary city,” Ringsmuth said. “The fact that we’re even talking about it is a sign of progress. It doesn’t shock me at all that there was a fury raised about it, because the city is a different demographic than the county and the surrounding areas.”

If Ringsmuth were on the HRC today, he said he would attempt to initiate a conversation about the “Me Too” movement in an effort to get conversations started about sexual harassment in northern Michigan workplaces.

HOW TO GET PEOPLE TOGETHER? Nash, the current HRC chair, also moved back to Traverse City after spending his young adulthood somewhere else.

“I’m from Traverse City, but I moved away for a long time. I came back in 2010.

I wanted to get involved in the community

in some way,” he said. “I was writing letters to the editor about LGBT rights and discrimination.”

He was recruited to join TC Equality and then asked to apply for a spot on the HRC. He was appointed in 2012, and he’s served during a period when Traverse City has seen its LGBT community flourish.

His joy over the strides that have been made in recent years in acceptance of LGBT issues was dampened by the controversy last year when the HRC took up immigration and “sanctuary city” status, however. That debate got ugly, and personal and meetings broke down into vitriolic hate.

Nash said he isn’t sure what he or other members of the HRC will propose to attempt to improve the tone of the debate. He wants to see people of disparate views get together.

That poses a challenge for the HRC, however, because the group, by its nature, serves a Taylor Nash liberal agenda.

“We were talking about civil discourse recently, and we’re talking about how can we create an event, some kind of workshop or some kind of community meal, something that encourages people from different ideological backgrounds to interact,” he said. “Until we reach a place where we are becoming a community again — there’s not this entrenchment, this division — I don’t know that we can address any major human rights issues.”

Board member and Northern Express columnist Isaiah Smith resigned earlier this year from the HRC, but not due to the toxic debate over immigration, although he said that got extremely ugly. He said he just had too many demands on his time.

He said he doesn’t think the divide will be bridgeable any time soon.

“I think it’s a national fever, and we have to wait until the fever abates,” Smith said, “and I don’t see that happening this year.”

What is the Soul?

Scott’s statement I think the idea that we are each a created non-material soul, temporarily possessing a body, is widely cherished because it suggests that death is not final. There may also be appeal in regarding oneself as an intended and lasting part of the universe rather than as a fleeting fleck of biology. The suggestion that we exist independent of our bodies is passed down to us in mythologies and is reinforced by modern-day accounts of out-of-body experiences.

And while our consciousness doesn’t last forever, our impact on those we leave behind will remain for a time, and the atoms that make us up will recycle into the universe. There is some poetic beauty there.

In trying to understand what we are, let’s start with an honest, careful assessment of the information we have before us. Look past the muddling emotions that surround inevitable death. Don’t give unwarranted credence to inherited mythologies. Graspable evidence points to a finite life in an often-beautiful world, surrounded by many similarly conscious, mortal fellow humans. Now, what should we do with that?

That 1985 film is the last time I saw anything resembling a “non-material soul, temporarily possessing a body.” Seeing Brian Dennehy and Tawny Welch step out of their skin and fly around the pool was cool, but it’s a far cry from the human soul. What you’re describing is closer to Gnosticism, the Christian heresy based on Greek philosophical beliefs that matter is evil and the spirit good. Gnostics, not Christians, believed they were spiritual beings trapped in a human body. The Christian belief in the soul is similar to your own. We also believe the soul is inseparable from our physiology.

Where you and I differ is here: We Christians believe the soul is located in our being, not our brain. By Ross Boisoneau Robots have fueled our imaginations for decades in books, TV, and movies. Today, what was science fiction is becoming the stuff of everyday classroom learning, from the high school level to elementary classrooms.

Philip Leete is one of those at least partially responsible for the Grand Traverse area’s growing zeal for robotics. The onetime TCAPS teacher co-founded the Quarkmine Space at Logan’s Landing, first as an adjunct to his teaching, then as his full-time focus.

Also at work promoting robotics is the state, which recently announced grant funding of $3 million from the Michigan Department of Education for robotics programs in public schools (with another $300,000 for private schools).

School districts can use the grant funds to participate in either the FIRST Robotics program and competition, with the World Championships returning to Detroit next April, or the VEX Robotics program and its Robotics Education and Competition (REC).

What’s the difference? Leete compares the two different programs to different sports.

“It’s like basketball and soccer. They play on different fields with different types of balls.

These programs have different competitive seasons, equipment, platforms, and coding language. But they are both about thinking, problem-solving, and creative design.”

Moreover, the state notes that both robotics programs are focused on those STEAM applications — hence the availability of grant funding. “It’s a great year to start or grow a robotics program,” said Leete.

John Gilligan is Leete’s partner at Quarkmine. The onetime IT worker and programmer found the enthusiasm of the students contagious. “I started as a mentor of a team,” he said. “Now I work for the REC Foundation (Robotics Education & Competition).”

He works with teams and events across the state, even the country. “There’s no typical day,” he said with a laugh. “Today I had meetings in the morning, worked with local robotics teams, did a webinar with the Michigan Department of Education to help schools with grant funding, worked at Quarkmine, had another Department of Education meeting for non-public schools, showed a new V5 system to another robotics team.” The next day he was scheduled to meet with the superintendent, principals and staff at Kingsley about getting robotics there up and running.

While Quarkmine is located in Traverse City, the interest in robotics is spread far and wide. In Petoskey, science teacher Tom Ochs serves as lead coach for teams in Petoskey and Charlevoix. Petoskey recently hosted a conference open to all teams from the area.

“Kids are presenters, teaching other kids – programming, CAD, marketing, safety,” he said.

Ochs said there are 40 to 50 students involved in Petoskey, and 20 or so in Charlevoix. He said there were around 200 people at the conference.

Those involved say that, while after-school programs are a great way to start, getting robotics into the classroom where all the students can and are expected to participate is

the best way for the school to reap the benefits of a program. “All our seventh graders are taking a robotics class as a nine-week rotation. It’s great to hit all the kids,” said Marc Alderman, an instructor at Benzie Central.

While some of the students might initially embrace it and race ahead, those who are more passive learners are able to move at their own pace while still learning the basics of the technology. All those involved say not only does the interest in robotics lead to better understanding of STEAM practices, it helps kids in many other ways, including teamwork and self-esteem.

The interest in and availability of robotics stem from several factors. Primary among them are the recognition that robotics provides several academic benefits as well as the fact that, like computers, prices for robots have sharply decreased in the past several years.

“Costs are so far down,” said Leete. Robot kits can start as low as $100, though they might more typically run between $300 and $400 for classroom use.

Funding comes from schools, the state and, in many cases, the public. “The community from Bellaire is supporting it,” said Chris Vandergriff, an instructor in Bellaire who coordinates the school’s teams.

“The Lego team is an after-school program, and it just blew up,” he said.

He said robotics is part of an effort to bring more activities and experiential learning into the classroom. He estimated that in the middle school there are 33 students involved; from 4th to 12th grade, more than 50. This year the

program is being expanded down to second grade. “A team with second graders did a great job among fourth-graders as a pilot,” he said.

Ochs said those students who are initially interested are typically very enthusiastic.

“With my high school teams, I’ve had kids beating down the doors [to get in]. I may get to leave [school] at 9pm,” he said.

The programs have real-world applications, too, even while the students are still in school. “Last year the Lego team with Tip of the Mitt Watershed looked at the lake colors,” said Ochs, to help determine where septic systems were potentially polluting waters. The teams also worked with GoBabyGo!, a national initiative to provide mobility opportunities to children age 5 and under who have mobility challenges. Toy ride-on cars are modified to provide mobility and sociability for children. “Camp Transition was a camp for sight-impaired [kids] at Camp Daggett.”

Even the competitions fuel cooperation. For example, the challenges may involve two teams of students and their robots working together, with both teams collecting the same number of points based on their mutual success. Then they switch off with other teams, until all the groups have worked with one another. The one with the most points wins.

Ochs has started a program to reward and recognize students for their achievements. He said First Badges (firstbadges.com) are similar to merit badges in scouting. “It’s a way for schools to quantify what students are learning,” he said. His hope is that schools eventually use the badges as high school credits.

GAME CHANGER Technology is revolutionizing the way aspiring student-athletes get noticed

n the old days, aspiring college athletes would send out VHS tapes — and later, DVDs — to college coaches, all in the hopes of getting noticed. These tapes collected footage of the athletes and their performances into a highlight reel of sorts, showing game or meet footage that showcased their talents and abilities. The process of splicing these videos together, putting them on tape or disc, and making dozens of copies of them was workintensive and sometimes even costly. Still, the price was one that athletes and their parents were willing to pay, if it meant catching the eye of an influential coach.

Today, the concept of the “highlight video” hasn’t died, either for high school athletes or for their college recruiters.

It has evolved, though, moving from cumbersome physical VHS or DVD formats to YouTube. According to Jason Carmien, athletic director for Traverse City West Senior High School, this change is just one area where technology has altered the landscape of college sports recruiting.

“If you went back 10 or 15 years, you would have had to get video of yourself out there to people in kind of archaic ways,” Carmien said. “Whereas today, kids can create videos of the things that they do, whether that’s football or tennis or golf or whatever. They’re able to create evidence of their abilities and get it out to an amazing number of people in a very easy, simple way.”

In the grand scheme of things, this transition from VHS or DVD to YouTube is hardly surprising. However, for Carmien, these subtle technological shifts have done a lot to give student-athletes more of a

voice in the recruiting process.

That voice, he says, is something that these kids need. While the common conception of recruiting is that college coaches scout for athletes, come to see talented kids play, and then make contact, the reality is a bit different. Certainly, some high school athletes do get actively recruited that wa7, but Carmien says they are part of a small minority. In most cases, it’s up to the student to get the ball

rolling for themselves.

“When you look at the total number of people that compete in educational athletics, very few athletes actually get recruited,” Carmien said. “Most of those athletes have to recruit themselves, no matter what sport they play.”

For students looking to “recruit themselves,” technology can be an incredible aid. YouTube provides a way to keep a running archive of athletic

accomplishments, from touchdowns scored to races won. Even the most basic video editing software makes it easy to compile a professional-grade highlight video quickly and at minimal cost.

Coaches have tools of their own that can help, too. Carmien says that many high school athletic departments — including those in the Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) district now utilize a platform called Hudl. Hudl lets coaches record video, build “playlists” of key moments, and analyze the footage to identify areas for improvement. The platform also makes it easy for coaches to share footage with players, or even to send it directly to recruiters. Whether the coach is looking to help an athlete put together a YouTube highlight video or refer the athlete directly to a college coach on their contact list, Hudl makes the process easy.

Playced is another valuable platform for high school athletes in the midst of the recruiting gauntlet. The software allows athletes to create a “player resume” and run it through the Playced system.

The system then matches the athlete’s resume and “personal preferences” to schools, providing a list of colleges where the student has the best odds of getting recruited.

What might be the most important tool of all for aspiring college athletes, though, is social media. Through networks like Facebook and Twitter, Carmien says that high school athletes can start building a following that goes far beyond the stands of their home stadium.

“I think social media has [impacted recruiting] just because of the immediacy of it,” Carmien said. “The idea that, when someone does something special, it gets

out right now. I think it creates a buzz, not only within your community, but within your region. Most every athletic platform uses social media to immediately get out scores, statistics, individual players of note. I think it makes people more aware.

You don’t have to wait for tomorrow’s newspaper anymore. You don’t even need to have a computer to pull up a news story, where maybe five, six, seven years ago, you did. Now, you get everything right on your phone. I think that trend has made recruiting a little bit different.”

In particular, social media has perhaps helped to break down some of the geographic barriers that high school athletes might face while trying to get recruited for college athletics. As Carmien notes, not every local newspaper reports on high school athletics in the exact same way. Some smaller town publications might only report scores, without indepth reports. Others might only highlight bigger games, matches, or meets. Some, on the other hand, give high school sports almost as much attention as collegiate or professional athletics. MLive, for instance, does extensive reporting on high school sports downstate, tracking and ranking athletes and teams throughout their respective seasons.

Carmien, for his part, doesn’t believe that there is a geographical bias in sports recruiting in Michigan. Even though northern Michigan doesn’t really have an equivalent to MLive, Carmien believes that technology helps to level the playing field for athletes from the area. “I’ve been here for more than 20 years,” he said. “The high school athletes that deserve to be recruited at a high level from this area have been.”

Rob and Ed Brengman — the brothers behind Leelanau’s Brengman Brothers Crain Hill Vineyards — bottle up an annual tribute to their football-lovin’ big brother who led the family and his college football team

By Al Parker The worn green and white football jersey might seem out of place hanging on the wall of the clean, airy tasting room of a beautiful Leelanau County winery.

But when you hear the story behind the uniform, it makes sense.

Rob and Ed Brengman, who own and operate Brengman Brothers Crain Hill Vineyards, are paying homage to their football-loving older brother, Bert, by producing an award-winning flavorful white wine in his honor, Block 65 Blend.

Bert, who wore number 65 as an offensive guard for Eastern Michigan University, died in 1998 after a 20-year battle with cancer. It’s his well-worn jersey hanging on the wall “There were eight boys, and we all played football growing up,” said Rob Brengman. “Bert was the oldest.”

The boys, along with their five sisters, grew up in East Detroit and attended Detroit Servite Catholic High School, which closed in 1986.

In high school, Bert was a punishing running back and wore #40 for the Panthers. Over the years, several of the Brengman boys also wore #40 at Servite, carrying on the tradition of their oldest brother.

But when Bert went to EMU in 1971, Huron head coach Dan Boisture gave him #65 and moved the 6-foot-1, 230-pounder to the offensive line. That would make Bert a very small offensive lineman by today’s standards. For example, wearing #65 on the 2018 EMU squad is Lucas Tesznar, a 6-foot-5 freshman who tips the scales at 305.

In ’71, their fifth season under Boisture, the Hurons racked up a 7-1-2 record and outscored opponents 228 to 85.

“The whole family would go to games to see Bert and the Hurons play,” recalled Rob. The team’s stingy defense allowed only one touchdown in their final five regular season game. EMU was undefeated in the regular season and ranked No. 3 in the NCAA

College Division, where they advanced to the first bowl game in the football program’s 79year existence. In the inaugural Pioneer Bowl in Wichita Falls, Texas, the Hurons fell to Louisiana Tech, 14–3.

“We watched that game on TV, and it was pretty exciting,” said Rob, who was nine years younger than Bert. “Back then, there wasn’t that much coverage of football on TV, and it was pretty cool to see Eastern play.”

Bert played three more seasons for EMU, but the squad never matched the success of his freshman year. After graduating, he tried out with the World Football League’s Detroit Wheels, coached

by Boisture, who left EMU to head up the fledgling pro team.

But that didn’t work out, and Bert went into coaching, eventually working at his alma mater, Servite; Ferris State College; and Grosse Point North High School.

In 2003, five years after they lost their eldest brother, Rob and Ed established Brengman Brothers Crain Hill Vineyards on 45 acres they’d purchased from the Leelanau Land Conservancy. They planted 25 acres, then eventually added another 15 acres of grapes at two other locations.

A few years ago they started producing Block 65 to honor Bert.

Each year the winery produces 3,000 to 4,000 cases, and Block 65 accounts for about 300 of them.

For wine lovers, it’s a classic blend of Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris grapes. It features star thistle, honey, chamomile, and apple (on both the nose and palate) with a hint of ginger.

Each pour is well-balanced with a pleasing level of sweetness.

The 2017 vintage is 40 percent Viognier, and 30 percent each of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. Those percentages change naturally with each year.

“It’s a nice blend,” said Rob. “We don’t do anything to manipulate the ratios. It changes slightly from year to year. It’s like a football team, it’s different every year.”

Growing up, sports were always a big part of my life.

Not only do I love playing them, but I also love the event of going to a game or watching them on TV with friends and family. One of my favorite parts of sporting events is the food. Whether it’s a hot dog and mustard at a Tigers game, or a slice of pizza at a Red Wings game, sports have a unique way of creating amazing food memories. One of the most vivid food memories I associate with sports is chili and football.

Before I went off to culinary school to further my kitchen skills, I graduated from The University of Michigan. Michigan sports fans tend to take football Saturdays pretty seriously, and my friends and I were no exception. Every Saturday through football season we would host a tailgate before the game for some good fun and great food. The crowd favorite was always the turkey chili. It’s a very simple recipe, but is loaded with flavor, and keeps you warm during those cold afternoon games. This is a recipe I come back to often in the fall and winter months, not just because it’s delicious, but because of all the memories associated with it. Enjoy!

Ingredients: • ¼ Cup Fustini’s Robust Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2 Pounds Ground Turkey • 1 Yellow Onion, Small Dice • 2 Large Carrots, Small Dice • 3 Cloves Garlic, Sliced • 1 Jalapeno, Minced • 1 Red Pepper, Small Dice • 1 Cup Corn • 2 Tbsp Fustini’s 12 Year Dark Balsamic Vinegar • 1 Tbsp Cumin • 1 Tbsp Coriander • 3 Tbsp Chili Powder

A 125-year staple updates its digs and expands its menu

That’s the approach of the Boyne River Inn — affectionately nicknamed “The BRI” — in Boyne City, where the menu offers up uncomplicated, from-scratch dishes to complement striking Boyne River views.

REVITALIZED RESTAURANT Stephanie Kopenkoskey is the Inn’s front of house manager; she oversees restaurant operations for owners Julie and Ed Mann, who have owned the inn since March 2018.

But the Inn has actually been around a lot longer than that, said Kopenkoskey. The BRI’s origins trace back to 1893, when the city was at the crossroads of flourishing lumber, brickmaking, and tannery industries, and the Water Street pub was the place to do business or relax after a hard day’s work.

It had been in operation under various owners for 125 years, but when the Manns purchased the inn, the first thing they did was … shut the old place down.

“It just hadn’t really been taken care of all that well,” Kopenkoskey said. “They basically gutted the kitchen, putting in new appliances and a new ceiling, redid about half of the main restaurant, and did a lot of cleaning.”

FRIENDLY SPACE Once the repairs and updates were complete, the restaurant reclaimed its space, with a cleaned-up but timehonored style: pine wood walls, wood tables, standard dining chairs, and a long bar backed by a grand mirror. Guests can enjoy river views from the restaurant’s interior, but deck seating overlooking the Boyne River is available as long as diners can stand it.

“We keep the deck open as long as we can into the fall — until it’s just too cold to sit outside,” Kopenkoskey said.

The revamp of the old pub, like its menu, was completed, in part, to cater more to a family crowd, although the BRI aims to accommodate its bar patrons as always.

“We have a great menu, with something for everyone in the family,” she said. “But we also have good ol’ draft beers, like PBR and Bud Light, for people who want to come in for something very simple, like just a beer and a burger.”

THREE SQUARES DAILY Open year-round, seven days a week, the BRI makes everything homemade, from scratch, “except our French fries, which are frozen,” said Kopenkoskey.

Brand new to the restaurant is a breakfast menu, which fires up at 7am, most notably with its drunken French toast, a favorite from the Manns’ other restaurant, Smoke on the

“The drunken French toast takes challah bread and soaks it overnight in heavy cream, champagne, eggs, and spices,” said Kopenkoskey. “And it’s served with local maple syrup.

The BRI’s signature Rise and Shine breakfast — two eggs, hash browns, toast, and your choice of meat or fruit — is the second most popular morning option.

LOCAL FAVORITES For lunch, the Reuben sandwich or the BRI club are contenders for No. 1 picks, thanks to generous layers of high quality meats that are home-smoked over at Smoke on the Water.

For dinner, the local walleye is a sure bet. Served with wild rice pilaf, toasted almonds, and steamed broccoli, the fish is locally caught by Charlevoix’s John Cross Fisheries, and fabulous.

Fridays, the BRI rolls out one of the area’s most popular Friday night cod fish fries; Saturdays, it’s time for prime rib, served with maple-glazed carrots and garlic mashed potatoes.

The only thing missing? Desserts. “We don’t have any yet,” Kopenkoskey said with a chuckle. “We haven’t been open that long, and we definitely want to have great desserts, so we’re still figuring out what everyone wants!”

It’s the dream of every slot player: Slide money into the machine, press the button, (or pull the handle if you’re an old-school player), and watch the symbols line up.

Winner. Winner. Winner!

Suddenly you realize you’ve just won a big jackpot. You hit it really big. It could be a lifechanging moment if the prize is hefty enough.

“About 12 years ago a group of ladies came in to play and brought a friend whose husband had passed away,” recalled Johnny Barrientoz, director of slots who oversees some 1,430 machines at both Turtle Creek Casino and Leelanau Sands Casino. “They just wanted to take their friend out to have some fun, take her mind off her troubles.”

It was the widow’s first-ever visit to a casino. She felt out of place, but was willing to try her hand at a slot machine. Hesitantly, she sat down and slipped $20 into a progressive Wheel of Fortune machine. On her very first pull ever, she won the $330,000-plus jackpot.

“It changed her perspective,” recalled Barrientoz. “It just goes to show, it’s timing and luck.”

Kalkaska resident Jennifer Guggisberg was celebrating the July 4 holiday by playing a 10-cent Quick Hits game at Turtle Creek when she hit for $4,638.

“All of a sudden all of these Quick Hit symbols came up,” she said. “I didn’t realize what I won at first. Then I got excited. You’d think I won a million dollars!”

Guggisberg quickly made plans for a family trip to Florida next April.

Two days later, on a Friday night, she returned and won another $2,200. Then her fiancé went back two days after that and hit for $5,400 on another Quick Hit machine, right next to the one that originally paid off for Guggisberg.

On July 10, Jacquelyn Williams was at Turtle Creek with her mother and playing a Life of Luxury machine for the first time when her 60 cents resulted in a $6,358 jackpot.

“I had only been there 20 minutes or so,” said the Bay City resident. “I picked a gem, and I didn’t know what was happening. The machine just kept adding up the money. It was just a very lucky moment.”

The win means Williams will be planning a spring trip to Italy to see her son, who is

stationed there in the U.S. Air Force.

And recently a Turtle Creek guest was playing a 100-Play Video Poker machine when he was dealt a Royal Flush. The payout for the 100 Royals was $100,000, according to Barrientoz.

But before you mentally start spending your next slot machine windfall, here are a few things you should know: First, once you spin and win, no need to flag down an attendant. A casino employee will quickly find you. At Turtle Creek, a new automated system sends a signal to an iPod carried by each slot attendant, who will check the machine, making sure it’s working properly, and that your win wasn’t the result of a machine malfunction.

If it is a malfunction, you still get the money right? No. Most machines carry discrete labeling that says “Malfunctions void all pays,” which protects the casino.

The attendant will then verify your identification. You won’t get a penny unless you show a valid ID. But once you show your ID, you’ll get your hand filled with bills.

If your win is $1,200 or more, you’ll need to fill out a federal income tax form. Yes, the IRS gets a cut. You have to pay federal tax on all of your winnings, and the casino will issue you a W-2G form, an IRS document specifically designed for certain gambling winnings.

If you’re a casino regular, you can deduct the money you spent while chasing that jackpot, provided, of course, that you kept records of your wins and losses.

You can have the tax bite taken out at that time or pay later. “About 20 percent of our big winners have the taxes taken out at the time,” said Barrientoz. “It’s at the discretion of the guest.”

At Turtle Creek, if the jackpot is more than $25,000, the casino will issue a check.

And in certain situations, the casino will offer the winner a free room and a dinner while employees process the appropriate paperwork.

After all, if you have a free meal and all that freshly won cash, there’s a good chance you’ll keep playing. That’s what the casino is hoping. If you do decide to leave, most will happily have their security team to escort you to your car.

If you’re one of the very rare players who wins more than $1 million, you have options. Many casinos will offer either a

cash payout or an annual fixed sum. You usually have 90 days to make your choice.

For some large progressive jackpots, payout can take hours. Sometimes it’s out of the casino’s hands, since some payouts — like the Megabucks in Nevada — are handled by game manufacturers. You could have to wait days or weeks for your money.

If you’ve only won a few thousand dollars (still pretty good), you’ll get the money quicker.

But don’t stress if it takes longer. The casino is not trying to get out of paying you. It’s a good time to grab a meal at a casino eatery, relax, and contemplate your good fortune.

After all, if your lucky slot machine has 64 stops on each reel, your chances of hitting the biggest jackpot would be 1 in 262,144, and many machines have far more than 64 stops per reel.

The competitor Manton resident Kathy Duranso finished in first place in the 2017 Turtle Creek Casino TournEvent in October, winning $2,500 and a trip for two to Las Vegas to compete in the national tourney.

Duranso had never been on a plane before, let alone outside Michigan. She and her boyfriend Dan stayed at the elegant Wynn hotel-casino.

“I felt like I already won,” said Duranso, who met actors George Hamilton and Danny Trejo during the trip.

There were some 175 other players from 90 casinos taking part in the national event.

Playing in the tourney’s first session, Duranso did well, advancing to the second round. Cheered on by some Turtle Creek staff who flew out to see her, Duranso placed in the top 14 players, taking home $5,000 in cash, enough to pay off her house and buy winter coats and boots for her grandchildren.

It's a Conspiracy! - 25¢ Classic Matinee

Wickham’s unique brand of spiritual music may seem like more singer-songwriter output from the surface, but when you dig a little deeper, you can hear that this is an album full of heart and faith.

The title track, which already has inspired several other cover versions by some of Wickham’s musical peers, gets Wickham’s message of hope across in a confident way. The use of metaphors in “Wild River” is both impressive and beautifully rendered, and the pretty “Great Things” offers pop appeal as well.

Opening track “Parking Lot Pirouette,” sets the tone here; it’s an affecting number about not being able to leave the one you’re with, and that pushpull of relationships is a continuing theme. On “Eve’s Daughter,” the man in question is a military visitor who catches the girl’s eye at an inopportune time. “Break Out the Champagne,” champions a female friend who’s on the lookout for a better man than the one she had before. While Shires’ vocals can be too sharp in tone at times, her lyric writing shows plenty of polish.

Houndmouth – Golden Age – Reprise

The Indiana rockers return with 10 new ’80s-inflected numbers that couple itchy guitars with an abundance of synths. Opener “Never Forget” crashes right in with its retro feel, while the set’s first two singles, “This Party” and “Golden Age” — as their titles might allude — throw a little disco in for good measure. There’s a similar feel with “World Leader.” Houndmouth’s midtempo balladry is best executed on “Modern Love,” however, with its mix of romance and quirkily sampled sounds.

The Shy Boys – Bell House – Polyvinyl

Shy Boys often get called “surf-pop,” which conjures up images of vintage longboards and Beach Boy haircuts, but in reality, these tracks are more ’80s than ’60s — albeit an ’80s with vagrant vibes and a little too much dirt. Named after the place the band’s leading brothers (Kyle and Collin Rausch) lived with the other three bandmates and pals, the band definitely shows potential — especially in tunes like “Champion” and “No Fun,” which show off their confident yet calm vocals — but at the moment, they’re a little too caught up in hippie-rock cliches that drag down even the best of their tunes several notches.

The unbelievable true story of French convict Henri “Papillon” Charrière, as chronicled in his autobiography that was a publishing sensation in the 1970s, is once again brought to the screen.

A remake of the 1973 movie of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, this version doesn’t have quite the same star power, with Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) stepping into their respective roles.

And while I can’t speak to how this Papillon compares to the original (never seen it, ’cause you know, I’m not a dad), I don’t quite understand why it was remade.

It’s not that Hunnam and Malek don’t give fine performances. They certainly do. Nor that this daring true story of escape isn’t compelling. It inherently is. Or that production value isn’t there. It’s beautifully shot and must have been quite the undertaking to mount.

It’s just that the film is such a drag, an unrelenting drag, with so much suffering and inhumanity.

Not even gratuitous shots of a shirtless Hunnam (50 percent of why I was there) could make up for it.

It starts, however, on a very different note.

It’s Paris 1931, and Henri, known as Papi (Hunnam), for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, is a talented safecracker. He just made a major score, and to celebrate, he and his lady love (Eve Hewson, progeny of Bono) hit the town for a lively night out set against the backdrop of the Moulin Rouge. There’s lots of drinking, plenty of uncomfortable-to-watch PDA, and gangsters who are angry at Papi for reasons never explicitly explained. But the next day, the police are at his doorstep, charging Papi with murder.

So Papi was framed and is convicted of murder, sentenced to life in a French prison colony in Guiana. He resigns himself to his legal fate. He knows there will be no appeal, no overturning of his conviction no matter how innocent he may be, so he immediately devotes his attention to planning an escape.

The wheels in his brain start spinning when he crosses paths with Louis Degas (Malek), a nerdy forger who also happens to be a millionaire.

With round glasses and a more delicate nature, let’s just say Degas is going to need some help making his way in prison.

The rough and tumble Papi proposes an agreement to Degas: protection in prison in exchange for Degas bankrolling his escape.

Degas is initially reticent to accept, but after the man sleeping next to him has his guts sliced open, he changes his mind, and a bromance is born.

roundbreaking for its all-Asian cast (the first major studio film to do so since The Joy Luck Club 25 years ago!), this is not only the latest win for representation in Hollywood, it’s another big win for showing audiences just how much better and more interesting movies can be when we widen our view. Because this is what the beleaguered rom-com has been waiting for, a bold reinvention that is sublimely entertaining with everything you could possibly want: an ultra glamorous setting, swoon-worthy romance, pitch-perfect cast, laugh-outloud humor, and resonant emotional truth. Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s addictive bestseller, this sparkling delight of a romantic fantasy is as sudsy as it is smart. Taking you into an unfamiliar world, the cultural specificity is vibrant and real, counterbalancing it’s dazzling-with-decadence setting among the uber rich of Singapore. It’s a classic fish-out-of-water story, about a New York girl (Constance Wu) who after traveling to her boyfriend’s home for a wedding, finds out he’s the heir-apparent to one of the oldest and largest fortunes in Asia. And how she comes to find that despite their love, their differences may end up keeping them apart. It’s a story we’ve all seen, but you’ve never seen it like this before. I swear. This is classic Hollywood glamour with a euphoric ending that begs for a sequel. Glamorous, glossy, gossipy, and glittering you’d be crazy to miss it.

Conditions in the prison are horrifying. Not much of a worse place is imaginable. And despite Degas, attempts to grease guard palms (with the money he has to store where the sun don’t shine, if you catch my drift), they still end up on a grueling labor detail in the heart of the jungle, and Papi continues to protect Degas even when it becomes clear he would be better off to drop his dead weight. Papi is a principled criminal, and their relationship turns genuine.

From there we are treated to all your prison movie favorites: escape attempts, betrayals, shank stabbings, solitary confinement, starvation, executions, diarrhea, shower scenes, cruel punishments, and sadistic wardens (a particularly good one here in a white suit).

If there were supposed to be some kind of “triumph of the human spirit” undertones, they do not come across. What Papi has is an incredible knack for survival and unbelievable endurance. His journey is one of so much blood, sweat, stool, and pure stamina. What exactly drives him, however, is not fully explored. Nor do we ever get to spend much time getting to know Degas.

For the duration of the film’s punishing 2-hourplus runtime, there’s just no release or change of pace. It’s one bad thing after another, and one can only take so much. But you will like Malek and Hunnam together, and their chemistry does pay off to a degree in the final act.

Both Malek and Hunnams’s accents, however, confound. They are supposed to be French, but Malek does something vaguely British, and Hunnam forgoes his own British accent for an American one. He’s in Jax Teller mode, and the Sons of Anarchy fans of his will also be pleased by a cameo by a fellow SAMCRO. Hunnam’s strong performance calls to mind his work in the far superior (and with a similar jungle setting), The Lost City of Z. He truly is a fine actor, but it feels like he’s too pretty to be taken seriously. Mainstream success in the movies will unfortunately continue to elude him.

If I could sum up the experience of watching Papillon, it would be this: miserable AF. While a very interesting story and nothing grossly wrong with the production, it didn’t use all that misery on display to say something meaningful.

While watching, I often wanted to make my own escape, or, rather, felt like I was enduring a life sentence of a movie.

And the sequel plainly demonstrates the ABBA catalogue does not run deep. But this is a film that knows what it is. And who it’s for. And it plays to its audience perfectly. We find Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the young woman who brought her three potential fathers (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård ) together on the eve of her wedding, after she has renovated her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) hotel on the most picturesque of magical Greek isles following Donna’s untimely passing. So in addition to Sophie’s present-day struggles opening the hotel, we get to enjoy a young Donna (a luminous Lily James, of Cinderella) and find out what exactly led her to this idyllic Greek life and having a baby with three possible daddies. So while the new songs don’t always hit, when they do bust out favorites like “Dancing Queen” as boats filled with Greek villagers arrive at the Hotel Bella Donna, an endorphin high is released that honestly will make you feel like you’re dancing right along with them. It’s practically transcendent. This is a most joyous of escapist delights.

When I get upset, he says I’m being “sensitive.” I try to look cute for him, and I just don’t think it’s funny for your boyfriend to mock your appearance. Is this his issue or mine? : It’s probably tempting to give him a taste of his own medicine: “Baby, I did not use the word ‘small’ in describing your penis. I called it ‘adorable.’”

The reality is, beyond men’s zipper zone, women are generally more sensitive to jabs about their looks. This makes sense if you look at sex differences in the qualities we evolved to prioritize in a mate. Of course, we all want a hottie if we can get one — just as we’d take the Malibu mansion with the stable, the tennis courts, and the manservants over the basement apartment with all the charm, space, and light of a broom closet in a Dickensian orphanage.

But in mating, as in life, we tend to be on a budget. Evolutionary social psychologist Norman Li and his colleagues recognized that, and instead of asking research participants the open-ended sky’s-the-limit! question “So, what do you want in a mate?” they gave them a limited “mating budget.” This, in turn, forced participants to decide which traits and qualities were “necessities” and which were “luxuries.”

The Li team’s results echo a body of crosscultural findings on mate preferences. Men in their study overwhelmingly deemed “physical attractiveness” a “necessity.” (Consider that the female features men find beautiful correlate with health and fertility in a woman.) Meanwhile, the women they surveyed, under these “budgetary” constraints, overwhelmingly went for “status/resources” over male hottiehood.

This reflects women’s evolved motivation to go for men with an ability to invest in any children who might pop out after sex.

Because women coevolved with men, they are, at the very least, subconsciously attuned to men’s prioritizing physical appearance in female partners. This, in turn, leads a woman’s emotions to sound the alarm — in the form of fear and hurt feelings — when her male partner seems to find her less than lookalicious.

Explain these sex differences to your boyfriend so he can understand why you feel bad about his taunts in a way he probably doesn’t from, say, putdown-fests with his dudebros. Encourage

him to tactfully tell you if something in your look isn’t doing it for him (and explain how to go about that). In time — assuming he’s an accidental meanie — he should start showing a little restraint, merely blurting out “You look good enough to eat!” and not (har, har) going on to part two: “...because that spray tan makes you a dead ringer for a giant Cheeto.”

: I’m a woman who’s very feminine and considered pretty. However, I have a deep voice — to the point where I’m sometimes mistaken for a man on the phone. I’ve learned to laugh about it, but it sometimes makes me feel bad, especially when I hear a bunch of other women talking. How do people feel about women with deep voices?

: Okay, so you sound like you’ve been smoking unfiltered cigarettes since you were 3 years old.

In social situations, nobody’s mistaking you for Darth Vader in a dress. On the phone, however, they’re missing the visual information. There’s only the audio. In other words, those who think they’re hearing a man are not making some sneering judgment about your femininity; they are simply reacting based on averages — how, on average, women tend to have higher, chirpier voices.

On a positive note, according to research by social-personality psychologist Joey T. Cheng, women with deep voices are — if not more likely to rule the world — more likely to be perceived as the dames to do it. In Cheng’s experiments, both women and men with lowpitched voices were viewed as more dominant and higher in social rank.

That’s probably why former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, while running for office in the ‘70s, worked with a speech coach to deepen the pitch of her voice. This helped her make the transition from cuddly mummy to “The Iron Lady” — as she was nicknamed by the Soviets.

Try to remember that you’re a package as a person. Your voice is just part of the entire “very feminine” you. Maybe relabel your voice “sultry,” like those of some of the sexiest screen babes — for example, Scarlett Johansson and Lauren Bacall. This might help you feel a little better when you have those dismaying “Excuse me, sir. Who’s calling, please?” experiences — as a deep-voiced friend of mine recently did.
