Independence Health System Opens Comprehensive Cardiology Building
By Amy-Gabrielle Bartolac
Independence Health System (IHS) today announced the grand opening of its expanded Cardiology Services building, designed to provide streamlined, highquality care for the community in one integrated building.
“This milestone makes a significant leap to provide efficient and effective cardiology care to Westmoreland County,” said Denise Addis, Vice President, Cardiovascular Service Line. “Independence Health System is committed to offering expert cardiology care here, close to home, so that patients don’t have to travel long distances for comprehensive testing and treatment, especially at times when they’re experiencing health challenges.”
The services include the following:
Ground Floor
Interventional Cardiology
The interventional cardiology team diagnoses and treats coronary artery disease and structural heart diseases. The providers use specialized imaging or other diagnostic techniques to ensure that blood flow and pressure in the arteries and chambers of the heart are operating normally.
Anticoagulation Clinic
The outpatient clinic is pharmacistmanaged and is dedicated to caring for patients at risk for blood clots. The team consists of a board-certified pharmacist and specially trained anticoagulation nurses who manage patients taking anticoagulants, also known as bloodthinners, who collaborate with the cardiologists to provide specialized medication monitoring, education, lab testing and medication adjustments to ensure that the therapy is as safe and effective
as possible. The Anticoagulation Clinic has achieved Center of Excellence Status since 2003 and is one of 150 Anticoagulation Clinics nationwide to achieve this status.
First Floor Cardiology
An expert team of cardiologists is available to help with the medical management of heart disease. Working closely with primary care providers, Independence Health System offers offer consultations, preventive treatment options, and more.
Heart Failure Clinic
The clinic helps manage heart failure through a comprehensive approach. It also serves as an educational resource aimed at reducing or preventing hospital readmissions and increasing understanding of heart failure — including the disease process, diet, medications, and symptoms — to improve quality of life.
Second Floor
Cardiac Surgery
Highly trained cardiothoracic surgeons perform open heart procedures – bypassing blockages and fixing or repairing faulty heart valves when necessary through minimally invasive cardiac surgery and robotic surgery.
Cardiac Electrophysiology and Cardiac Device Clinic
When heart rhythms are out of sync, electrophysiologists use a variety of tests to check the electrical condi-
tion of the heart and to diagnose any problems with a variety of treatment options available from immediate treatment to ongoing support.
“Now that the cardiology building is complete, it helps augment continuity and care for patients,” said James Adisey, MD. “Not only does it enable comprehensive cardiothoracic care in one building — it’s directly across the street from Westmoreland Hospital and the cath labs, making it easier for providers to care for patients in the office, while quickly managing emergencies if needed, due to the proximity. This is a true collaborative cardiothoracic center.”
In recent research from Healthgrades, Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital was ranked #1 in Pennsylvania for Coronary Intervention Procedures. A ribbon cutting ceremony and public tours were held.
Independence Health System Cardiology is located at Medical Commons Three, 44 South Washington Avenue, Greensburg, PA 15601. n
Organizing Your Home: Tips from your SRES®
Increase your home’s appeal for yourself or for buyers on the market with these organizational tips.
Decide what’s working in your home and what’s not.
Take stock of items in your home and how they are organized. What spaces work for you, and which ones feel overwhelming or inconvenient? Do you have too many items stored in a space that is too small? Go room by room and evaluate your closets and drawers. Ask yourself, “what do I like about this current organizational set-up? What should change?” Take notes.
Come up with a plan
After evaluating your current system, come up with a new plan. Get rid of items that you no longer need or have space to keep—remember, the fewer things you have, the less time and space you will need to keep them nice. After decluttering, organize your items using bins, shelves, racks, or other systems for separation. Your system will work best if the objects you use most are easy to access without bending or reaching.
Take a “step-by-step” approach
Avoid burnout by breaking up tasks and starting small. For example, you could start with a closet that you can reorganize in a day, or you could sort through old clothes to give to charity. Once you are done, take a break before moving on to the next project.
Ask for help
Some labor-intensive tasks are hard to do alone. When needed, do not be afraid to ask for help. Larger projects likely require the help of family, community members, or hired professionals. Talk with people in your network, including your SRES® professional, for recommendations for qualified professional organizers, cleaners, or movers in your area.
Count on an SRES® to guide you through the process of buying or selling your home, making the transaction less stressful and more successful. The Seniors Real Estate Specialist ® (SRES®) designation is awarded by the SRES® Council, a subsidiary of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

TIPS FOR GETTING RID OF EXCESS “THINGS”
1
Toss duplicate items: If you have more sets of work clothes or measuring cups than you need, consider giving away what is extra.
2
Sort items into four piles: One for things to keep, one for things to donate, one for things to throw away, and one for valuables to appraise and/ or sell.
3
Pass on belongings: If there are items you no longer need, or keepsakes you would like to go to a certain person, gift them personally now.
What is Missing from Most Retirement Advice?
by Kevin Bock, Integrity Retirement Solutions, LLC
After over 35 years in retirement and legacy planning, I’ve noticed some common threads that could devastate many retirement plans. Most people don’t know where to turn or what to expect as they get closer to retirement, and they may think that they have everything taken care of... Wrong!
Before we proceed, here are some thoughts on the two main professionals who many people think have everything taken care of for them.
If you’ve met with your lawyer and think you have everything taken care of, ask yourself: are they licensed to give financial/ insurance advice? Most aren’t. Do they have a working knowledge of taxes and how to minimize or potentially avoid them? Is their main source of income from retirement and estate planning (not administration), or do they do other things and use wills and estates as just a sideline?
Saturday 11:30 am and 5:00 pm, Sunday 6:00 am on 1320 AM WJAS NEW! Saturday and Sunday Noon to 1:00 pm on WJFA 910 AM, WJFG 1480 AM, 98.7 FM, and 107.5 FM
If you’ve been working with an investment advisor, have they coordinated a plan that covers income planning, asset planning, tax planning, health care planning, legacy planning, and legal planning? I believe these are the six most important parts of proper retirement and estate planning.
Now: Do you still think everything is taken care of?
As we mature, and become retirees, things change. Our needs change; Our wants and desires change; Our goals change… and our retirement and estate plans need to change to meet these new needs, wants, desires, goals, and concerns!
As we age, we may need others to help us. We may eventually need help with daily living activities, like eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, and maintaining continence. Some other considerations may be the need for mental support or companionship, transportation, meal preparation, managing household needs (cleaning, laundry, trash, yard maintenance, etc.), help with medication, finances, and more!
Does your lawyer or advisor have a depth of knowledge in these areas? And can they direct you to real quality resources that can help with in home care, personal care homes, or assisted living placement when staying at home is no longer an option?
So do you really have everything taken care of?
Good retirement and estate plans should cover most, if not all, of the above areas. You should have a good way to access these resources when needed.
Another area that may be important is protecting your assets from creditors, family members, catastrophic medical expenses, and taxes. For example, did you know that probate and inheritance taxes are optional and can often be reduced or eliminated with proper planning?
So far, is everything taken care of?
Have you ever known someone who was left with a mess when their loved one passed? Their estate may have been substantially reduced by fees and taxes, and the confusion may have taken years to clear up because the family contested a will. The family split up because of arguments, many times because things aren’t spelled out in detail in the last wishes. Most parents don’t want strife after they pass but fighting and arguing is not a rarity! Simple planning gets simple results. Effective planning gets effective results.
Did you know that when someone dies, their estate can
become public knowledge at the courthouse? In my experience, I have seen salespeople go to the courthouse to find out who got what, get their personal information, and call them to sell them windows, siding, doors, or whatever else. If you have a will, it will most likely direct your estate into probate, be delayed, and become public knowledge.
Did you know that, with proper planning and beneficiary designations, you could keep your estate private? With proper planning, It can be distributed in a few weeks or months instead of one to two years or more!
So, how do you find a professional who can handle most or all of your future needs? It can be difficult. People want more of their needs handled under one roof or with one professional who is knowledgeable about what is available.
When you are searching for a professional to help you with your retirement journey, ask them how much experience they have with income planning and guaranteed income you cannot outlive, asset planning, tax reduction planning, healthcare planning, legacy planning, and legal planning. Find a professional with a depth of knowledge in as many of these areas as possible. They don’t have to be CPA or an attorney, and you may need to include these qualified advisors in your plan. If your main advisor has a working knowledge in all of the above areas, you can potentially reduce holes, gaps, and problems that can derail your wants, needs, goals, and desires in retirement.
In nearly 35 years, we rarely have had someone come into our office who truly had everything taken care of. There is no perfect plan, but there are effective plans that can reduce surprises in the future! n

• Lower blood pressure and reduced risk of heart disease

A 33-mile network of flat, paved trails running along the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. This trail is very user-friendly with views of downtown and access to public restrooms and benches. Enjoy the serenity of nature with city conveniences nearby.
3. Mammoth Park Walking Trails (Mt. Pleasant Township)

4. Renziehausen Park Rose Garden Loop (McKeesport)
A local gem featuring a paved walking loop surrounded by 1,200+ rose bushes. Flat terrain and benches make this ideal for older adults.
5. Panhandle Trail (Collier Township toward Weirton, West Virginia)
Crosses into West Virginia and offers a smooth, mostly level surface for long or short walks. Features beautiful bridges, creek crossings, and wooded stretches.
For those with mobility challenges, look for trails that are labeled ADA-accessible or feature paved or crushed limestone paths. Many parks also offer senior park-
ing, shaded rest stops, and accessible restrooms.

The Role of Brokers in Healthcare and How It’s Changed
By Crystal Manning and Dvonya Sedlacko-Stephens
The first thing many people will tell you about health insurance is that it’s complicated. Between public and private plans, HMOs, PPOs, and high deductibles, it can be hard to know which plan is right for you.
It has been reported that about half (51%) of insured adults report some difficulty understanding at least

one aspect of their health insurance, including what insurance covers, out-of-pocket costs, and benefit explanations. That’s where brokers come in. Brokers explain health insurance plans to consumers and help them decide which plans work best for them. Healthcare is not one-size-fitsall. Therefore, potential enrollees need to consider their own personal needs and preferences. Patients may have questions about monthly payments, out-of-pocket costs, and in-network providers, for example.
That’s where brokers come in. Brokers explain health insurance plans to consumers and help them decide which plans work best for them. Healthcare is not one-size-fits-all. Therefore, potential enrollees need to consider their own personal needs and preferences. Patients may have questions about monthly payments, out-of-pocket costs, and in-network providers, for example.
But brokers have become a hot topic in healthcare lately, particularly due to lawsuits over alleged kickbacks. The Department of Justice is currently suing large Medicare providers, accusing them of paying millions to brokers in
exchange for directing patients toward plans that would give insurers the most money.
What’s the difference between a sales agent and a broker?
Though commonly confused, sales agents and brokers have different employment models, though both are required to have a license to operate in their state.
Brokers work with different health plan providers – typically insurance companies - to find potential enrollees in their area and share several options based on the patients’ needs. Typically, independent brokers are paid by the insurance companies they represent, with no extra fee or cost to you for enrolling in Medicare through a broker.
Sales agents, however, are employed by one health plan provider, either public or private, and try to sell that company’s plans to patients. Sales agents often work on commission, though payment models vary based on where the employee works.
How has the job changed in the last 20 years?
Brokers have seen changes in policies over the past 15 years from various presidential administrations, and these have changed how they approach their jobs. With many more changes coming in the fall, it is more
important than ever to trust your broker to assist you in making the right plan choice for you.
For one, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which former President Barack Obama signed into law on May 23, 2010, and the creation of the ACA marketplace, which opened on October 1, 2013, created a lot of uncertainty and confusion.
The introduction of Medicare Part D in 2006, which implemented coverage of outpatient medications, was another major shift. This was compounded by additional changes codified in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act that added an outof-pocket spending cap and drug discounts for patients on Medicaid.
Former President Joe Biden also limited broker access to healthcare. gov to prevent plan changes without patient consent. Under the Biden administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also finalized new rules in January to penalize brokers who changed plans without patients’ knowledge.
Why should someone use a broker?
The Medicare process can be overwhelming. A licensed Medicare broker will listen to you and give you information about your coverage options that is based on your needs and preferences. Working with a trained broker can help you save time and money, ultimately helping you find the right plan.
