CYBER SECURITY AND HOW IT EFFECTS INDUSTRY.

Why is OT cyber security important? Well OT cyber security is important to stop either malicious or accidental acts which could cause an unwanted event or a dangerous situation which could range from turning the power off to a city to stopping your office doors from opening so you cannot go to work.

We use various types of anti-virus to protect our computers, laptops, and servers. But how many people have heard the term OT? Not many I guess ,so let’s explain more about OT.

OT is your company’s Operational Technology which can be part of your IOT or IIOT networks and it comes in many forms which I am sure most of your companies have in some shape or form and just take it for granted. So, what are typical OT devices in business?

EFTPOS, Touch Screens, displays, PLC’s, RTU, Sensors, valves, Transmitters, switches, actuators, data loggers, security systems, access control systems, SCADA, Telemetry systems to transfer data/information, elevators, BMS (building management systems), Automatic gates, Air conditioners/ HVAC, Smart lighting systems, pump stations, motor control centres, Smart circuit breakers, most modern machinery, etc. Essentially any device that can be connected to the internet which can monitor and or control an object or piece of equipment within your business.

The best solution is to install a device like OPSWAT OTFUSE which learns what normal commands look like in your systems and stops abnormal commands from being executed very similar to some banks who stop a transaction on the other side of the world when you just made a purchase in the local shop.

Ask Mark Edwards at Centralian Controls to demonstrate how this would work and protect your business OT networks.

OPSWAT bringing ZERO-TRUST cyber security to your Production Floor. OPSWAT is your last line of defence for your critical OT assets.

AWARD WINNING MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS

It’s not every day that you’re recognised as the best Education, Training and Employment Services Provider. The Multiple Solutions team were left beaming from ear to ear when they won at the Salisbury City Centre Business Awards on 31 August.

“The most amazing thing about this is that the deciding factor in who took out the Award was feedback from our clients,” says Martin Edwards, Partnerships Manager for Multiple Solutions.

Multiple Solutions is a specialist employment agency, working with clients with any injury, illness or disability to find and maintain meaningful, long-term employment.

They work with businesses and clients through the Northern suburbs to match vacancies with the perfect candidate. It’s a genuinely individualised service. Specialist consultants meet with businesses in the local area, working hard to understand the needs of their business, and the characteristics of the perfect employee. At Multiple Solutions we create opportunities for both our employers and those seeking to find employment.

Placement is usually competitive, but the pre-interview and placement work Multiple Solutions do with their clients ensures they put their best forward, and they are frequently successful in winning the role.

After a client is placed, Multiple Solutions conducts regular post placement support to ensure the employer and employee are benefiting from the placement. If there’s ever any need for training or workplace support that’s on offer too.

Often wage subsidies are available to offset the cost of wages. Similarly substantial government subsidies are available for apprentices in any industry. Multiple Solutions helps employers navigate these opportunities.

If you have a business need that isn’t currently being met, speak to the team at Multiple Solutions. They’ll work with you to find perfect person, and provide all the after placement support to ensure they succeed.

ROTARIANS CHANGING

Maybe it comes from poor media planning, perhaps its because the media want to report troubles or negative stories or perhaps its because of the Rotarians ourselves want to be the silent achievers.

Our founder Paul Harris is famously quoted as saying “Rotarians are very much more favourably disposed toward action than they are toward words.”

Rotary only achieves outcomes like the worldwide eradication (almost) of Polio, development of 8 peace centres across the world and training of hundreds of peace scholars

each year, local youth leadership programs like RYLA or RYPEN, creation of hundreds of youth ambassadors through worldwide youth exchange, responding to emergencies through Shelterbox, relief of poverty through RAWCS or recognising and supporting of hundreds of local community initiatives which make our community better.

American President Harry S Truman said “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit” – my view of life is this is Rotary, normal people committing their time to achieve amazing things.

If you are interested in joining Rotary reach out to a local club.

If you want to be inspired about how Rotary is making our world better check out Rotary Voices – a free worldwide blog of projects from across our world.

Visit https://blog.rotary.org/stories/

It constantly amazes me that Rotary’s achievements at local, national and international levels are often the best kept secret.

CYBER SECURITY

Every business small and large must have a strategy

Unfortunately, every business that has a computer, a phone and some connectivity via the internet has some cyber security risk.

Many small and medium business owners commence from some great technical skills or passions from a motivated proprietor/s with the business model and planning following this passion.

Cyber security is often overlooked or left until too late.

Time and time small and medium businesses are being caught with cyber security impacts. The risk can include massive financial losses, loss of organisational IP, hostage data, loss of reputation and even competitors spying.

Don’t think your business is too small to be targeted.

Don’t think that cyber security has to be hard or is highly complex.

Small, free and simple steps can improve your organisations cyber resiliency.

The federal government through the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre has some great free resources for businesses including

• GCA Cybersecurity Toolkit for Small Business (a series of tools which explain the risk and simple actions you can take)

• Australian Small Business Cyber Security Guide (a simple downloadable guide tailored to small businesses)

• A Cyber Security Assessment tool (a paper-based selfguided security assessment for your business)

For small and medium businesses, the choice is clear, you must act now and review your cyber security. The only choice is whether you pay for a expert and outsource this critical need or you spend a hour or two reading the guide and undertaking the simple assessment.

Why

upcoming Council

(1) How do we know who to vote for and

(2) Why should we even vote?

The Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA) shares all the candidates and their profiles and contact details on its website https://www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/elections/councilelections/candidates-and-profiles

You can see who is running in your local area, what they stand for, what they hope to achieve and other relevant information. Most will also have Facebook pages, street-corner or coffee meet and greets, as well as undertake doorknocking.

Familiarise yourself with candidates and vote for the ones who:

• support local business and the economy,

• invest our ratepayer money in the maintenance program, projects and events that we want to see in our local community,

• that will be strong voices in the Chamber to drive Council’s Agenda forward,

• who “Think Big, Act Small” Council wide vision but not at the expense of a local footpath, reserve or verge.

The Elected Members and Council Executive make decisions that have an impact on many aspects of your life, your business and your local community.

Democracy is at its best when voices of the wider community are heard. Not just a few keyboard warriors focussing on the same issues and offering no solutions.

So … What frustrates you the most?

• The rates you pay and the perceived return on that investment?

• How Council is growing our local economy?

• How Council is contributing to local jobs growth and what support Council provides to local businesses?

• How is Council attracting and retaining the best and brightest staff?

• The turnaround time administrative processes such as applications and permits take

• In what ways are we creating a vibrant City feel across every suburb and foster community pride?

• Safety and security issues across the City.

The only way to help influence the above for the better is to VOTE.

• Take an active interest in your local Council.

• Attend Council Meetings.

• Engage in Community Consultations.

• Raise issues and concerns directly with Elected Members or Council Staff.

Voting ballot papers will be sent to all registered voters (residential and business) between 14th – 20th October and voting closes Thursday 10th November at 5pm

(Personal Comment) If you don’t take the time to have your say and vote, you shouldn’t find the time to complain on social media after the fact !

Good luck to all candidates and thank you for taking the time to share your passion to serve your community.

David Waylen Executive Officer – Salisbury Business Association Inc.

Please Note: The Salisbury Business Association and the Northern Business Breakfast are apolitical, we do not endorse specific candidates and will work with all candidates and elected members and staff to get stronger outcomes for our business community.

Every 4 years, local government elections are held to Elect a Mayor and local Councillors (Elected Members) and this year, across the various Councils, we see a diverse range and large number of candidates running for Mayor and Elected Members. So two quick questions:
will it benefit my
community?
VOTE in the
Elections? How
business? My family? My
