Course Overview

Identity The Academy of Northern Ballet offers a unique holistic and healthy training method which helps create a strong technique. Students have an individual timetable and train for a minimum of 8 hours per week. Each class lasts around 3 hours and is designed to develop a strong foundation in alignment, strength, understanding the body and artistry. We implement the use of group biobanding where necessary which recognises that the physical, mental and emotional growth of an individual develops at varying rates. Therefore, each student’s schedule, level and corrections are given according to the need of that individual. In some cases students may not be grouped by age but ability. Health and injury prevention are at the very core of the teaching method which emphasizes correct alignment, fitness and the development of strength at each stage in the individual’s training. Nutrition and anatomy are also key elements of the curriculum. Students are actively encouraged to be creative, to ask questions, conduct research and take responsibility for their own learning.

Programme aim The CAT programme offers an alternative to young talented dancers leaving home to access professional training. Therefore, CAT primarily operates outside school hours in line with Leeds City Council term dates. We are focused on making sure students maintain a balanced life between academic life and dance training. By offering a unique and comprehensive training programme, the Academy of Northern Ballet’s CAT programme aims to enable young people to achieve their maximum potential as classical ballet dancers. We aim to equip young dancers with a greater versatility of skills in view of the demands made on professional dancers today.

Part of a bigger family The CAT programme is not only an important part of the Northern Ballet family it is also part of a national family. There are 9 Centres for Advanced Training in Dance across the country. Northern Ballet works in partnership with Northern School of Contemporary Dance to form 1 of the 9 National Dance CATs. Through their affiliation with the Music and Dance Scheme, the National Dance CATs are part of a network of exemplary dance and music schools. Together, we have strong links with full time training schools as well as vocational dance schools. To find out more about the other Dance CATs you can visit the national website:www.nationaldancecats.co.uk Where will it lead? The CAT programme aims to equip students with the skills to progress onto professional vocational dance training. Previous alumni of Northern Ballet’s CAT programme have gone on to train at Royal Ballet Upper School, English National Ballet, The School of the Hamburg Ballet and many more. Students who have accessed this training have gone on to gain contracts with companies such as The Royal Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet, Scottish Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre.

Course content

Timetables for students will be individual and structured to ensure that the students get the maximum out of their training. All intensive courses, theoretical dance studies, weekly enhancement sessions and rehearsals are mandatory and are an integral part of the curriculum. Lower level years - This section consists of 3 levels. Students study classical ballet, creative sessions and pointe work. Their training is enhanced with yearly intensives and weekly sessions in theoretical dance studies, jazz, music, drama and anatomy. This ensures the students continue their learning through different mediums as well as encouraging them to develop their expressive qualities alongside their technical dancing skills. Level 1 & 2 students attend a minimum of 8 hours training per week beginning with technique classes, body conditioning, foot strengthening, creative and jazz. In Level 2, once feet are strong enough, students move on to pointe work. Level 3 the number of hour’s increase slightly; weekly contemporary classes are added as well as Reformer Pilates class. Upper level years - This is a continuation of the programme after level 3 and consists of levels 4-6. The number of hours of training increase, which demands professional commitment to the programme. Other classes such as workout, men’s class, repertoire and variations are added.

Foundation Levels - In individual cases foundation levels will provide a stepping stone for students to access the next level of training. A student on a foundation level timetable will have the balance of training to suit their ability and may be a mixture of levels. Although this could be down to a number of reasons, the most common will be the maturity of the student’s body and how we expect their body to cope with the intensity of more advanced material. This is particularly the case in the transition from level 3 to level 4 when the work generally takes a large jump in difficulty and intensity and students are of the age where their bodies are rapidly developing. Our foundation levels will be continually reviewed throughout the year with the scope to move the student from foundation when we feel they are ready. Individual Training Plan- Each student receives an Individual Training Plans (ITP) at the beginning of the academic year. These documents outline the student’s individual information which includes training schedule, mentor information and extracurricular activities. This information is gathered prior to the students ITP being completed to ensure that academic studies and rest time are taken into account within the training schedule. ITPs are agreed by the student, parents and the Academy with a signature, however, they will be monitored throughout the year and changed if necessary. As the student progresses on the course we will ensure that their schedule is well rounded and gives them enough experience and variety to help them succeed in their chosen career. Any additional classes/courses* that you wish to attend outside of the CAT programme, including those during holidays, must be cleared in writing by the Academy prior to attending. *Please see information on Attendance (Page 10 -12) for our guidance on external festival and competition participation.

Intensive courses Our Intensive courses are an integral part of the student’s curriculum. We run the compulsory intensive courses during the months of: October, February, April, June and August during the Leeds City Council school holidays. The intensives give students an opportunity to perhaps work with choreographers, try new styles of dance and work intensively to widen their technique and training. Link to the company We are very proud of our unique link to the company of Northern Ballet. Sharing the building with a world renowned company gives the CAT students unique opportunities such as watching company classes and rehearsals. Company dancers occasionally drop into classes to mentor students on our Big Brother and Big Sister

scheme and in some cases students may have opportunities to occasionally perform with the Company in performances such as The Nutcracker.

Performances Students can sometimes have the opportunity to perform with Northern Ballet. Parents and students must bear in mind that casting is decided by Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director or the guest choreographer and is not negotiable. Students may sometimes be asked to perform in small demonstrations for Northern Ballet events. Participation in these performances is usually by assessment or audition only and is by approval of their teachers as to whom they feel is suitable for these performances. Castings are always dictated by a number of different factors. Choreographers usually have a clear idea of what they are looking for, if it is not your chance this time then it may be the next time. Parents are invited to watch class during the academic year as well as End of Year Performance and Summer Course showing. There will be performances for the CAT students at the end of each year alongside Northern School of Contemporary Dance. The CATs will also take part in the Academy End of Year alongside all students training with the Academy.

Theatre trips Each year CAT students will be taken to see two professional performances with no additional cost. The compulsory trips to the theatre are carefully selected to expose and increase students’ knowledge and awareness of performance. Students who do not attend the theatre trip and have failed to notify the Academy at least 1 week prior, will incur a charge for the cost of any pre-booked theatre ticket. Health and Wellbeing In our commitment to the health and wellbeing of our CAT students we have several measures in place to ensure the wellness of our young dancers remains a priority. Throughout the year students, parents and carers will be exposed to various opportunities that may include, taking part in sports science research to track and assist training, specialist Nutrition talks and information from Dr Mayur Ranchorda’s, physiotherapy sessions with Sarah Joice MCSP and taking part in conducting informed research/ information on psychology in young dancers training at an elite level. Physiotherapy- The Academy provides physiotherapy as part of the course to CAT students. The Academy physio is Sarah Joice MCSP, Clinical Director and Specialist Physiotherapist at Peak Physiotherapy. We have worked closely with Sarah for many years and recommend her due to her expertise and ballet knowledge. Should a student need to see a physio, they will need to speak directly to Miss Cara who will give them a referral to Sarah Joice. Parents/carers will then be contacted with further information of their appointment. Please note, physiotherapy sessions do come at a cost for some students. Whilst the Academy heavily subsidise this fee we do ask for a small contribution towards the cost. We apply a means-tested method to ensure costs of the session are fair for all. Studies/Homework All year groups have a comprehensive theoretical study package that complements their practical training. When assigned, we expect homework to be completed fully, handed in on time and clearly marked with the student’s full name. Study and homework sheets must be stored in your A4 file for reference.

Studies subjects include anatomy, nutrition and dance history.

Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) Student handbook 2019-20

8

Student Notice Board- Students are expected to take responsibility for their own timetable and management of information sharing with parents. A student notice board is located on the main corridor outside the changing rooms. This is used to display information notifying students of any changes to timetable etc. Students are expected to write this information in their notebook to share with parents at the end of class.

ASSESSMENTS

Students on the CAT programme do not need to re-audition for their place. Once on the course they are continuously monitored and their progress is assessed on a yearly basis in order to ensure the course and curriculum is still suitable. Students’ progress is monitored by looking at their technique, participation in sessions, homework completed, approach to their work, participation in enhancement and their attendance. Students are offered a place for one year only and subsequent years depend on the outcome of the assessments, progression, attendance record and teacher recommendation. Students receive a written report from their Academy teaching mentor twice a year. All reports will highlight the areas students are doing well in as well as the areas we would like them to concentrate on, improve in and any concerns we may have. Practical exam Throughout the year student’s work towards a practical class led exam which takes place at the start of the third term. This exam feeds into each student’s yearly assessment and final report. This exam is taken in year groups and will focus on all elements of the CAT syllabus. Parent and Pupil meetings Twice a year we will schedule a meeting to check on the general status of the student and their family. Mentors will also take time to discuss the student’s goals and corrections along with their progression on the course. If we have concerns regarding your commitment, attendance, attitude or health related issues at any time over the year your teacher and CAT Manager will speak directly to you. We may request a mid-year meeting with student and parent - In certain situations we may approach parents first. Mentor Each student will be allocated 2 mentors each year- a teacher mentor and a personal mentor. Mentors are there to help support students in all areas such as training schedule, wellbeing and life outside of the building. Mentors will attend all parent meetings and may meet with parents whilst students are in class if an appointment has been arranged. Students are welcome to meet with their mentor at any time to discuss any issues or concerns that they might have. External dance training When possible we support students continuing to study complementary dance forms with their local dance teacher. These classes will have to be agreed by the Academy as they are in addition to their training on the CAT programme and cannot replace programmed CAT classes. Students’ full energy will be needed for the activities of the CAT programme and school studies.

Attendance

Attendance to all classes, intensives and activities is compulsory. We appreciate that everyone unforeseen circumstances causing absences are to be expected but we do want all students to understand that this is a course and there are a set amount of classes for a reason. •

If you are sick you must call/email the department by 4pm to inform teachers and support staff.

When injured you can learn a lot from watching and taking notes. Unless you have another arrangement, as agreed with the Academy, this is what you must do. We will work with you to help you recuperate once your injury is healing.

Please do not come into class if you are contagious or too ill to take notes / have discussions.

We understand that many of our students take place in dance festivals/competitions. In cases where festivals/comps take place on the same day as a student’s CAT training we operate the following agreement: each student will be granted absence* to take the

opportunity to represent their local dance school at 3 festivals/competitions in the year. Students may take part in additional festival/competitions as long as these events do not clash with their CAT timetable. *Please give Academy staff as much warning as possible with the usual absence request procedure. For obvious reasons these absences cannot be granted during intensives and what the teacher

Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) Student handbook 2019-20

10

deems as key rehearsal periods. On exception, additional competition absence requests would need to be agreed on an individual basis. In cases where students break this agreement we will call a meeting with parent/carer and issue a warning - each case will be dealt with individually and appropriate action will be overseen by the Artistic Director. Attendance is assessed on the course and the Academy cannot pass a student who has not fully participated. Request to be absent/permission forms -

Permission to miss a class or part of class for whatever reason must be officially submitted in advance to the department in the form of a completed absence request slip (available on the CAT noticeboard). Slips should be handed in as far in advance as possible (minimum at least 2 weeks before the date) and permission must first be granted before you make plans to be absent. Holiday times and breaks are built into the yearly schedule.

Teacher absences In the event of a teacher being ill or injured we will try to find a suitable substitute teacher. If a teacher is ill or injured on the day of class and sessions have to be cancelled or shortened, the member of Student Support will contact parents where possible. Extreme Bad Weather E.g. Very high winds, very icy, snow storms, floods etc Please note that in the event of extreme weather as exampled above, we will contact parents as soon as possible regarding cancelled classes. This will be done via email/text alert service. If you travel a long distance to reach us, please contact us and we will issue advice regarding your travel. If you are unable to make class due to the weather, please notify us before 3:00pm where possible. Late Collection Policy Students will never be left at Northern Ballet alone and a member of Student Support will always wait with students until an adult arrives to collect them. For parents/carers collecting their children late from class, the first 15 minutes is not chargeable. Every 15 minutes thereafter is charged at ÂŁ5. Security / Terror Alert In light of recent terror alerts within the UK Northern Ballet has a security threat procedure in place for the building, staff and students if threat arises in the City or surrounding areas. Northern Ballet reserves the right to cancel classes if official information informs us that Northern Ballet or the surrounding area is deemed at risk. In this event we would contact all parents/carers directly with a text alert, email or phone call. In the event of a terror threat in the city centre we would liaise with the police and relevant authorities and keep all students safely in the building. We will also review transport disruptions and access to the building. No refunds will be given for the cost of a cancelled class as decisions will be made to ensure the safety to all staff, students and parent/carers.

Commitment to the course We appreciate that the course is a very big commitment for both students and their families and the Academy aims to give as much support as we possibly can. The dance world is very competitive and the reason we ask for such a big commitment is because we know it is what will be expected in this chosen career. We understand that students are under a lot of pressure from school as well as their CAT training- students are encouraged to speak to their mentor when things are getting too much and we will aim to find a way to help through the busier times. By accepting a place on the course students are committing to the full year. In some cases students decide that a career in dance is not a vocation that they wish to pursue. In this instance students are advised to speak to the CAT Manager to discuss their decision and potential options. A revised schedule can be put together enabling the student to finish the year thus fulfilling their obligation to the course. Please note that as the course is run year by year no refunds can be given to fee payments made in full. In cases where a student decides to leave mid-year, parents/carers should give the Academy half a terms notice. If a student decides to withdraw from the course immediately, parents/carers will need to pay the remainder of the (current) terms fee. If you decide to leave the course mid-year you must inform us and put it in writing. If you are a grant holder this is essential as we need to inform the Department for Education.

Social Media Advice The Academy acknowledges that the use of social media is prevalent in young people’s lives. The four platforms with the widest use being: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Whilst we understand that social networking offers opportunity to engage, communicate and have fun in new ways, it is important that we are able to stay safe online and use these technologies effectively. The Academy offers the following advice to protect both staff and young people: -

Academy staff will not become a ‘friend’ or ‘follower’ of an Academy student on any social networking site, including any ex-student under the age of 18.

Travel to Northern Ballet Parking at Northern Ballet We have two accessible parking bays alongside the building. Ample pay and display parking is available on Quarry Hill and we have a discounted parking rate at Leeds markets multi-storey NCP car park (LS2 7EA) located just next to the bus station and Kirkgate Market. Please see Northern Ballet’s website for further details Academy parent free 15 minute parking Leeds City Council have kindly agreed to let Academy parents use the Quarry Hill carpark free of charge for a maximum of 15 minutes when dropping off/collecting their children at Northern Ballet after 17:00.

-

This agreement states that vehicles will be left alone for a period of 15 minutes maximum. This agreement is for after 17.00 hrs MONDAY-FRIDAY ONLY. This agreement is not in place at weekends

Please remember that cars should not be parked outside Northern Ballet due to double yellow lines, no loading sign and for safety of all users. parents and carers.

Students travelling independently Once parents deem independent travel appropriate, students are able to make their own way to Northern Ballet. The Academy will request that parents/students fill in a travel form to let us know which train/bus route they take and which other students they intend on travelling with. The Academy always recommends that students travel (to and from the station) together when possible. When leaving the building by foot please take the route through the BBC, Leeds College of Music, Yorkshire Dance walk way. This pathway is much safer than to the left of the building. The Academy also advises students to not wear their tracksuit outside of the building, this is especially important for students who travel to the building independently, as the tracksuit is identifiable to the public and traceable.

A note from the Parents’ Association The aim of the Parents’ Association is to support the Academy and all our children by raising funds to help enhance the children’s dance education as well as organising events for the students to enjoy. All parents who have a child at the Academy are automatically members of the Association, but we would really appreciate you being involved in meetings or events. If you could give just a few hours each term to support us in supporting all our children then we really would like to hear from you. parents.association@northernballet.com
