La poesía en el libro de artista Stephen Sadow, Profesor de la Universidad Northeastern, Boston (EE.UU.) Enero, 2011.
n cada uno de los libro de artista, hay un solo poema escrito por un poeta judeo-latinoamericanico. Los poemas elegidos contienen alegría y tristeza, realismo y fantasía, emoción y reflexión. Cada uno exhibe una poesía madura y coherente, profunda y única. En ellos, se conocerá la enorme creatividad judía dispersada por la inmensidad de Latinoamérica y, además, por EE.UU. e Israel. Esta poesía trata de la identidad judía influida por el ambiente hispano y, al mismo tiempo, fuertemente inspirada por la mentalidad y las tradiciones judaicas. Incluye nuevas versiones de historias bíblicas, el misticismo de la Cábala, poemas de amor y de odio, lamentaciones sobre el Holocausto, Israel, la inmigración en América Latina, las dictaduras latinoamericanas, especialmente el Proceso (“La Guerra Sucia”) en Argentina. Algunos de los poetas muestran el interior del alma o meditan sobre los símbolos y prácticas del judaísmo, otros protestan por los crímenes antisemitas. Unos emplean una constelación de estilos poéticos, inspirados por los grandes poetas latinoamericanos—Rubén Darío, César Vallejo, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda y Alejandra Pizarnik— y otros adoptan el neo-barroco o la incoherencia de los principios del siglo veintiuno.

En cada libro de artista, hay una traducción al inglés del poema seleccionado. La poesía de los judíos latinoamericanos es poco conocida en los Estados Unidos y en los otros países de habla inglesa o en los cuales éste es un segundo idioma. Con unas pocas excepciones—entre ellos, los poemas de la chilena-norteamericana Marjorie Agosín y el cubanonorteamericano José Kozer—los poetas judeo-americanos no tienen una presencia en el mundo de habla inglesa. La inclusión de una traducción del poema en los libro de artista abre una pequeña puerta a una mejor comprensión fuerte y vibrante de la cultura judía. Además, una traducción literaria es una obra de arte en sí y figura como un aporte importante al acto de crear un libro de artista. •

The Poetry Inside the Artist´s Book Stephen Sadow, Professor, Northeastern University, Boston (USA) January, 2011.
n each artist´s book, there is one poem written by one Jewish Latin American poet. The poems that were chosen for these books contain joy and sadness, realism and fantasy, emotion and reflection. Each poem is mature and coherent, profound and unique. Together they demonstrate an enormous Jewish creativity that is dispersed throughout the inmensity of Latin America, USA and Israel. This poetry deals with Jewish identity, influenced by a Hispanic environment and, at the same time, inspired by a Jewish world view and Jewish traditions. It includes new versions of Biblical stories, the mysticism of the Cabala, Israel, love and hate, lamentations for the Holocaust, Jewish immigration to Latin America, and dictatorship, especially El Proceso (The Dirty War) in Argentina. Some of the poets expose their most private selves or meditate on the symbols and practices of Judaism. Others protest anti-Semitic crimes. Some employ a constellation of poetic styles inspired by Rubén Darío, César Vallejo, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda and Alejandra Pizarnik, while others embrace the Neo-Baroque complexities or the tendency toward incoherence at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Each artist´s book displays a translation into English of the chosen poem. Poetry written by Latin American Jews is little known in the United States and in other countries where English is the dominant language or a common second language. With only a few exceptions—among them the Chilean-American Marjorie Agosín and the CubanAmerican José Kozer—, these poets, so expressive of the Latin American version of Judaism, have no place. The inclusion of the translation of each poem in the artist´s book is meant to open a small door to the better understanding of a strong and vibrant Jewish culture. Moreover a literary translation is an art work in itself. It serves as an important contribution to the act of creating an artist´s book. •

eunir imagen y palabra, punto básico de la técnica del libro de artista, no es nuevo, pero en este caso es el fundamento para decir y mostrar de forma contundente lo que artistas y poetas judeo-latinoamericanos nos quieren expresar. Tomando la Identidad como eje y cuyos parámetros varían por cambios sociales, económicos y políticos de nuestra región, los artistas y poetas, sensibles y profundamente influenciados por los movimientos históricos que se suceden, se hacen presentes en este proyecto. Nace entre profesionales dedicados a las Letras y a las Artes Plásticas, de EE.UU. y de Argentina, e involucra a países de Latinoamérica como Uruguay, Brasil, Venezuela, Costa Rica y Bolivia. Desde el rol curatorial relacionar los poemas elegidos con los artistas plásticos significó un desafío cuyo fin era combinar calidad técnica y conceptual. De los artistas plásticos que figuran en este libro, cada uno desde su lugar, su expertise y su punto de vista ha enriquecido la poesía asignada con técnicas variadas: fotografía, grabado, aguadas, óleos, témperas y dibujos. Ellos suman ideología a cada poesía, hecho de relevante importancia dada la íntima relación de las piezas claves de este proyecto: los valores judaicos entrelazados con los de su tierra de nacimiento o adopción. Estos catorce libros exhibidos en conjunto, itinerantes por museos, templos e instituciones de Latinoamérica y EE.UU., finalmente quedarán como donación en la Universidad Northeastern de Boston. Es de esperar que el trayecto pautado sirva para ver incrementada nuestra firme voluntad de comunicar la identidad judía y latinoamericana, de la cual estamos tan orgullosos. Quedan en sus manos estos libros: imagen y palabra, combinación mágica que insta a un diálogo personal y profundo. •

o bring together image and word, the idea intrinsic to the creation of the Artist’s Book, is not new. But in this case, it is basis for telling and showing in a forceful way what Jewish Latin American artists and poets want to express. Taking Identity as an axis whose parameters vary because of social, economic, and political changes in our region, the artists and poets, sensitive and profoundly influenced by history, inform this project. Professionals from the United States and Argentina who work in literary study and the visual arts conceived this project. Others from Latin American countries such as Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Bolivia joined them. For a curator, to find a connection between selected poems and the artists was a challenge whose goal was to combine technical and conceptual quality. The visual artists who appear in these books, each one from his or her own place, expertise and point of view, have enriched the poetry. They do so with a variety of techniques, photography, engraving washes, oils, temperas and drawings. They add an ideology to each poem. This has great significance, given the intimate relationships between the key pieces of this project: Jewish values intertwined with those of their native or adopted countries. These fourteen books are being exhibited together, traveling though museums, synagogues and other institutions in Latin America and the United States. They will eventually be donated to Northeastern University in Boston. It is to be hoped that this combination of poetry and art serves to fulfill our firm desire to communicate our Jewish and Latin American identities, of which we are so proud. These books are now in your hands: image and word, a magical combination that provokes a profound and personal dialogue. •

n libro de artista es un objeto realizado por artistas en el cual la palabra y la imagen se conjugan. Basándose en un eje temático se realizan cortas ediciones o, como en este caso, una edición única. Los libros de artistas se desarrollaron en los comienzos del S.XX conjuntamente con el nacimiento de las vanguardias surrealistas. Adoptados por Fluxus, el Pop Art y por artistas conceptuales, como Marcel Duchamps (Caja Verde 1934), el objetivo era acercar la comunicación artística al hombre común. Los libros de William Blake y los cuadernos de Leonardo también podrían ser considerados como tales. El libro de artista no es la ilustración de un poema o pensamiento, porque más que estar pendiente del texto, el artista lo traduce al lenguaje simbólico cuya imagen surge desde los repliegues íntimos de la conciencia, donde la palabra no tiene permiso para bajar. ¿Por qué un libro de artista realizado por poetas y artistas judíos latinoamericanos? Porque el libro forma parte de la identidad del pueblo judío y porque el pueblo judío tiene su origen en la Torá, enseñanza o luz, que es palabra revelada; es por ello que el pueblo judío es el pueblo del libro. ¿Por qué Identidad y Diversidad? Porque ese lugar, es conocimiento del mundo simbólico de la propia cultura, es pertenencia y porque una de las características del judaísmo es que no es sólo una religión, sino tradición y cultura. La tradición y cultura son diversas y heterogéneas . Se desarrollaron de modos distintos porque cada comunidad local adoptó elementos culturales de los diferentes países en los que vivieron los judíos de la diáspora. Identidad no es igualdad, sino semejanza, coincidencia, reconocerse uno mismo a través del otro. Diversidad es aceptar la multiculturalidad; no hay posibilidad en la diversidad si no hay capacidad de reconocer al otro. Los artistas y poetas que integran este proyecto son concientes de ello . Su propuesta se basa en que no haya una mirada única, sino percepciones personales y que la imagen y la palabra dejan registro, huella e impronta, es decir, plantan identidad. •

n Artist’s Book is an object created by artists in which the image and the word come together. Based on a theme, they are made in small editions or, as in this case, a single edition. The Artist’s Book was developed in the early twentieth century, together with the birth of the surrealist vanguards, then adopted by Fluxus, Pop Art and the conceptual artists, starting with Marcel Duchamps (Green Box of 1934). The objective was to make artistic communication more accessible to the common man. Books by William Blake and the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci could also be considered Artist’s Books. The Artist’s Book is not the illustration of a poem or a thought, because rather than being dependent on the text, the artist translates it into symbolic language, whose images surge from the intimate furrows of the mind, to which the word cannot go. Why create an Artist’s Book made by Jewish Latin American poets and artists? Because the book forms a part of the identity of the Jews. The Jewish people have their origin in the Torah, their holy books, whose very name means revelation. Jewish people are known as the people of the book. Why Identity and Diversity? Because a knowledge of the symbolic world of one’s own is a valuable possession. And because Judaism is not only a religion, but also a tradition and a culture. The traditions and cultures are diverse and heterogeneous because they developed in differing ways in different communities. Each local community adapted cultural elements from the countries in which the Jews of the Diaspora lived. Identity is not equality, but similarity, agreement, and the ability to recognize oneself through other people. To have Diversity is to accept multiculturalism. The possibility of Diversity does not exist without the capacity to recognize the Other’s worth. The artists and poets that take part in this project are conscious of all that, and their work is based upon the concept that there is no one viewpoint, but rather personal perceptions. The image and the word leave a record, a stamp and a trace; that is to say, they deepen identity. •

Jenny Asse Chayo / P O E T A / M É X I C O Jenny Asse Chayo (1963- ) es licenciada en literatura latinoamericana por la Universidad Iberoamericana en México DF. Estudió filosofía judía en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén. Ha publicado los poemarios Busco en mi carne el nombre (1997); Es sed de morir el paraíso (2005) y El tránsito de la Luz (2007). Es coordinadora cultural de las librerías El Péndulo en México DF. Mariana Felcman / A R T I S T A
/ ARGENTINA Mariana Felcman (1976 - ) cursó la carrera de Diseño Gráfico en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Desde 1995 asistió a ateliers estudiando grabado, escultura y pintura. También estudió en el Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte. Participó en una residencia artística ¨InterArt Foundation” en Rumania, donde le otorgan un premio de pintura. Con fotografías, participó en la Bienal Siart, Bolivia, y con libros de artistas, en Tegucigalpa y Buenos Aires. Estudia pintura en el taller de Juan Doffo. Mantiene su estudio de diseño, realizando trabajos en el área editorial relacionados con la música, las artes plásticas, la fotografía, la literatura, la educación y la cultura.

She studied Jewish philosophy at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She is the cultural coordinator for the El Péndulo chain of bookstores in Mexico City. Mariana Felcman / A R T I S T
/ ARGENTINA Mariana Felcman (1976- ) studied graphic design at the University of Buenos Aires. Since 1995, she has studied printmaking, sculpture and painting in ateliers. She also studied at the National Institute of Art. During an artist residency held in Romania by the Inter-Art Foundation, she was awarded the prize for painting. She exhibited her photographs in Biennal Siart, Bolivia, and her art books in Tegucigalpa and Buenos Aires. She studies painting at Juan Doffo’s studio. Felcman manages her own design studio, doing editorial work related to music, visual arts, photography, literature, education and culture.

Todas las noches comemos en forma abundante y cantamos y reímos con el vino pero esta noche sólo hay pan ázimo y vinagre pues estamos tristes pensando en el destierro. ¿Qué sucede esta noche que no entonamos cánticos? Daniel Chirom
/ POETA / ARGENTINA Daniel Chirom (1955-2008) fue poeta, periodista y abogado. Publicó los poemarios Crónica a Robledo Puch (1975); Los Atlantes (1979); La Diáspora (1983) y El Hilo de Oro (1989). Chirom obtuvo el Primer Premio Fundación Inca de Poesía por Candelabros (2000). En prosa publicó Charly García (1983). Fue director de la revista de poesía ilustrada El Jabalí y el programa radial del mismo nombre. Colaboró en los suplementos literarios de Clarín, La Prensa, La Razón de Buenos Aires y en muchas revistas nacionales y extranjeras.
Michal Kirschbaum
/ ARTISTA / BRASIL Michal Kirschbaum (1978- , Israel) Artista visual y docente. Tiene grado superior en Artes Visuales en la UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brasil y cursa profesorado en Artes Visuales en la UDESC (Florianópolis, Brasil). Participó en diversas muestras en Buenos Aires y en Brasil. Obtuvo algunos premios en el área de fotografía e instalación. En el año 2008-2009 participó del salón de arte FUNDARTE e hizo su primera muestra individual en la galería de la UFSC (Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina).
Daniel Chirom
/ POET / ARGENTINA Daniel Chirom (1955-2008) was a poet, journalist and attorney. He published the books of poetry Crónica a Robledo Puch (1975); Los Atlantes (1979); La Diáspora (1983) y El Hilo de Oro (1989). He published the narrative Charly García (1983). Chirom won First Prize from the Inca Poetry Foundation with his poetry collection Candelabros (2000). He served as director of the illustrated poetry magazine El Jabalí and the radio program with the same title. He wrote for the literary supplements of the newspapers Clarín, La Prensa, La Razón in Buenos Aires and many national and international magazines.
Michal Kirschbaum
/ ARTIST / BRAZIL Michal Kirschbaum (1978- , Israel) is a visual artist and teacher. She graduated in Visual Arts from the UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brazil, and trained to be a teacher of visual arts at the UDESC, Florianopolis, Brazil. She has participated in a variety of art shows in Buenos Aires and Brazil. She has won prizes for photography and installation. In 2008-2009, she participated in the FUNDARTE art exhibition and had her first individual show in the gallery of the UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina).

Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights we eat in abundance and we sing and laugh over the wine but tonight we have only unleavened bread and vinegar because we are sad, thinking about exile. Why on this night do we not intone canticles? Every night we praise God as beautifully as we can, but this night silence reigns because we have lost our appetite and the desert is vast. Why on this night do shadows take possession of our houses? On all other nights, lights illuminate the table 20
but tonight there is only one candelabra so that we remember darkness. Why on this night do our hands and tongues tremble? On all other nights we pray for the day to come and we dance at the foot of our bed because innocent blood does not leave footprints. But tonight we stay quiet while the waters flow down and our prayers are for the dead who still accompany us. Why on this night do we keep our mouths closed and shut our eyes? On all other nights words protect us from stone but tonight the voices are mute and we laugh in tragic joy

as a solitary wall betrays our lack of shelter. Why on this night does everyone hide his face? On all other nights we praise our comrades and with eloquence we keep bodies from falling but tonight the absence injures our old flesh and the solitude of the name makes us listen to what we saw before. Why on this night did joy fold its wings and silence deflect our thoughts? On all other nights, even when death steps on our heels, we tell the phases of the moon and praise the lion but tonight nobody called at our door and it is already too late for someone to come and guide us through the stars. Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other nights a spirit tours our wedding day, imagines the first kiss, the sudden splendor, the crazy beauty but tonight a frozen wind stains our faces and our souls are dust and mud under the claws of lost memory. He willed the man of mud to walk and the man of mud walked He willed the man of mud to obey and the man of mud obeyed He willed him to work, to clean, to put things in order and he worked, he cleaned, he put things in order.
He wanted to converse with him and willed him to have a soul: silence: The Golem crumbled into dust, and returned to dust. Rabbi Eleazar remembered that all men are mortal.

Con el nombre de Israel Zeitlin, nació en Ucrania y fue llevado a Buenos Aires. Entre sus obras teatrales se destacan Pan criollo (1937) y El lustrador de manzanas (1957). Escribió con sensibilidad sobre la condición judía y bonarense. Libro para la pausa del sábado (1930), Sábadomingo (1937), Sabatión argentino (1938), son algunos de sus poemarios sobre este tema.

/ POET / UKRAINE - ARGENTINA César Tiempo (1906-1980) was a poet, writer, playwright, screenwriter and journalist. Born Israel Zeitlin, in the Ukraine, he was brought to Buenos Aires as an infant. Among his plays are Pan criollo (1937) and El lustrador de manzanas (1957). He wrote sensitively about the Jewish community of Buenos Aires. Por no decepcionar mi historia armo meticulosamente la trampa consabida y bajo pretexto coloco la mano dentro hastiado por mi condición judía. 70
Espejado por mitos que entertragedían, mi pueblo es poliedro introvertido. con vidrios convexos que alejan las puertas y el tic de repetir la fatalidad del sino.

/ POETA / ARGENTINA Eliahu Toker (1934-2010) fue poeta, idishista y antólogo. Tuvo un título de docente hebreo y se graduó como arquitecto de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Entre sus 12 poemarios figuran Piedra de par en par (1972) hasta Estado Civil: Abuelos. Poemas con nuestros nietos (2009). Padretierra (1997) obtuvo la Faja de Honor en Poesía de la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores. Tradujo literatura ídish al castellano y publicó antologías: Muestra de la poesía ídish del siglo XX (1976), El resplandor de la palabra judía (1981) y Celebración de la palabra (1989).
