Our Mission: North Cross School is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school that serves children from early childhood through twelfth grade. North Cross provides a rigorous academic curriculum, competitive with the best college-preparatory schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While we explicitly recognize the importance of intellectual development and academic achievement, we also strive to promote personal integrity, empathy, and responsibility to self and community. Through this, our graduates will act as leaders in the local and global communities, persons of intellectual and moral courage, and scholars in the service of others.

Letter from the Head of School

“Between restricted and unrestricted Annual Fund gifts, gala revenue, foundation gifts, and early commitments to our yet-to-kickoff capital campaign, North Cross School received from donors a total of $2,761,432 last year. ”

I looked back at my Annual Report letter from last year and it began “It has been an outstanding year at North Cross School…”

I am finding it very difficult, once again, to generate the creative inspiration necessary to say the same thing differently. The fact is that once again, it has been an outstanding year.

But, it has also been an exceptional year, a year that is singular in the annals of North Cross’ history, and I shudder to think of the superlatives I will need to use for next year’s letter.

Our graduating class achieved the highest average SAT score in school history, we concluded our first year boarding students in a downtown dormitory, graduated our second graduating class from North Cross-Shanghai, and opened North Cross-Nanchang. Our newly formed North Cross Foundation took in $454,171 in donations for the purpose of supporting student scholarships here. We double dipped into the 70s at Studio 540: The Last Dance, our very successful annual winter gala and auction. The African-American Affinity Group took over operation of the Big Flea and earned $14,000, over $7,000 of which went to assist Tailored Tuition students with all of the extra expenses required to fully participate in the North Cross experience.

And once again, we set a record for “Paddles

Up” for faculty professional development, perhaps the purest form of donor support for our faculty.

Certainly these are outstanding accomplishments, but no doubt, you are thinking how are these examples different from the accomplishments of past years?

Where is the exceptionality if it seems we are always having successful galas and a senior class with record-high SAT scores?

Our exceptionality lies in having concluded the most generous year in the history of the North Cross community. Between restricted and unrestricted Annual Fund gifts, gala revenue, foundation gifts, and early commitments to our yet-to-kick-off capital campaign, North Cross School received from donors a total of $2,761,432 last year.

This amount reflects an unprecedented commitment by our community to transition North Cross to greatness.

To elaborate on the singular philanthropic achievements of this past year, we must be very proud that in its initial year, our North Cross Foundation received almost twice the amount in donations than we originally budgeted. And, when combined with the gala and Annual Fund, we set a record for donations to the operating budget, a fact that resulted in a record operating surplus. To put

“It is enjoyable to look ahead at the transformational nature of the upcoming building campaign and realize that we have already received three of the four largest personal campaign commitments, including the largest commitment in the history of North Cross.” into concrete terms, we now have the ability to operate throughout the lean summer months without the need to access our line of credit, something we have not been able to do for the better part of two decades. In addition, as we move forward, anticipated Foundation revenues have allowed us to increase STEM faculty, add a half-time counselor, and reduce class sizes in the upper school and in the fourth grade. Please remember the importance of these three support mechanisms for our annual operating budget.

Additionally, we have made considerable progress in our capital campaign. While not public yet, we have made no secret of our desires and have achieved remarkable early success. To make the plans public requires us to finalize some early, quiet phase asks, and to continue working with our architects and builder to determine final plans and building costs. Once this all comes together, we will kick off our campaign in grand style.

It is enjoyable, however, to look ahead at the transformational nature of the upcoming building campaign and realize that we have already received three of the four largest personal campaign commitments, including the largest commitment in the history of North Cross. In addition, we have received $1,736,482 in gifts, a sum that has more than allowed us to cover our design and development fees. If you have not seen the architectural renderings and floor plans in Old Slack, please feel free to stop by to take a look.

I promise, I do not have to be asked a second time to go through the drawings with a parent!

There is also great joy in looking ahead to the successes of next year. How will our tremendous senior class distinguish itself? How many more championships will we add to our recent Boys Varsity Soccer championship? And, how will admissions fare given our exciting construction plans? We are fortunate to be part of a healthy school

community that is focused on the future, always with the best interests of our students in mind, and committed to being our best.

Letter from the Board of Trustees I am pleased to report on another stellar year at North Cross School. I want to express my appreciation to the School’s administration, faculty, staff and parent organizations for their commitment to the School and our students’ academic success.

Many milestones were achieved over the last year, including a record setting 39 students attaining the distinction of AP Scholar—a total of 44% of our junior and senior classes.

Approximately 20% of the senior class scored over 1400 on the SAT. Lower and Middle School students have been enthusiastic about the new Coding program and the fifth grade science fair became a Coding Fair last academic year. North Cross students actively took part in community service and provided over 1,200 volunteer work hours through our partnership with the Rescue Mission. Our students also have enjoyed success in athletics, highlighted by state championships for the Girls Tennis team, the Boys Lacrosse team and, mostly recently, the Boys Soccer team.

The School ended the 2017-18 fiscal year on a strong note financially. Thank you—we are profoundly grateful to the North Cross community for your continued generosity and belief in the School.

The Board of Trustees continues to work on behalf of our students and their families to support our staff and faculty in making the School the best it can be. We take our oversight

role very seriously but also aim to work with Dr. Proctor and the staff to form a long-term strategic vision for the School. We also work closely with the Development Office to build community across our constituencies. Stronger emphasis has been placed on sharing alumni success stories and achievements through our social media channels and our Alumni Board plans to launch an Athletic Hall of Fame for North Cross in the coming year. We are very excited about the School and its future and you should be too!

The Board is pleased with the progress of the Legacy Campaign and we look forward to the public launch next year. As both a Board member and father and stepfather to five current students, I am excited to see the campaign take shape and am thrilled to witness what will be one of the most transformative events in our School’s strong history.

As we embark upon our 75th anniversary next year, there will be much to celebrate! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your commitment to North Cross and for the difference you are making for our students.

This connectivity is at the core of the directive our faculty and decision makers put forward when initially consulted for the project. In order for our students to thrive academically and personally, North Cross needs to have a campus that fosters a sense of trust and community, the exchange of ideas, and one that facilitates lasting relationships between

faculty and students, and between students from different divisions.

As Head of School Dr. Christian J. Proctor summarizes it best: “Clearly, there’s a legacy from our beginnings in Mrs. Butts’ basement in Salem all those years ago to where we are today.

Now, we’re creating a legacy that is going to be the North Cross for the next generation.”

Sophomore Mashall Rasul talked with Tyler Lystash ’11 about his time as a Raider and how his experiences at North Cross helped shape his interests for the future.

On an unseasonably warm day in October, Tyler Lystash ’11 sits at the picnic tables next to the Lower School Garden wearing a faded baseball cap, sleeves rolled up.

Though little has changed about his appearance (or the campus) since he left 7 years ago, the stories he brings with him to the wooden picnic table are as varied as the colors of the bright marigolds behind him.

Lystash says, “North Cross always felt like home to me,” and definitely had an impact on his future choices. He remembers the encouragement from Dr. Bruce Rinker, a biology and environmental studies teacher, and their North Cross trip to Peru in 2010.

On this trip, he studied the Amazon and learned more about the extraordinary Incan Empire. “Traveling in high school was eye opening,” he says. The trip sparked a passion for the environment as well as history.

Being encouraged to exchange ideas and converse confidently with teachers outside of the classroom is a skill he appreciated once he landed at the University of Virginia (where he received a B.S. in Environmental Science and a B.A. in History). These connections had a lasting impact on Tyler. Even during the interview, his former history teacher, Robert Robillard, briefly interrupts to discuss later plans to meet while Tyler is in town for a wedding. He credits his teachers and the opportunities afforded to him at North Cross for giving him a wider view of the world and his place in it.

After graduating college, Lystash joined the Peace Corps and headed to Paraguay.

“I love drinking terere, a cold yerba tea. But there, you never drink it alone. You share it with others. Some of my fondest memories are of getting to know folks over a cup of terere; it’s the cultural unity of Paraguay.”

Lystash remembers how similar it was to the community he found at North Cross. A “lifer” at North Cross, Tyler remembers how his many years at the school provided the family atmosphere that encourages—and even demands—friendships with a variety of

After coming back from Paraguay, Lystash, an Eagle Scout, decided to hike 900 miles of the Appalachian trail with his girlfiend Sarah Osterman and their dog to help him transition from the quiet, solitude of Paraguay to the loud, busy culture of the United States.

His craving for wide open spaces persisted and he began to apply for jobs out West where in college he had interned with the Nature Conservancy to research and publish work on western water policy. “It’s really interesting because the subject integrates politics, economics, and environmental health.”

Lystash found work with the Montana Department of Natural Resources as a water research specialist. In his position, he stream-gauged to measure water flow and was involved in water rights regulation.

Montana was a perfect location for Lystash— whose senior DeHart project was entitled “Wildness”—and he enjoyed fossil-hunting and exploring the region’s national parks on his time off.

This fall, Tyler moved to Charlottesville, Virginia to work for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality as a hydrologist.

He’s looking forward to living closer to home and working exclusively in a hydrologist’s role, leaving behind the political side of water rights.

From Roanoke to Peru, then from Charlottesville to Paraguay, to Montana and now back to Charlottesville, Lystash has followed many different trails to discover his passions. Of his most recent (closer) destination, he notes: “I am looking forward to visiting North Cross more often now and reconnecting with my teachers. North Cross will always be a special place for me.” ❖ 19
