Counting on the birds

H

ello again, and welcome to this, our October / November issue of the North

by North-East magazine. The year has disappeared, so much has happened and yet there is still so much activity going on everywhere.

Spring is upon us and so to is the veritable feast of festivals, fairs, shows and activities.

There is so much happening in the NNE region that finding time to spring clean will be impossible. Why clean when you can drink, eat and dance anyway.

In this issue of NNE we have endeavoured to provide you with stories to read, information to glean and listed loads of things to do over these two months.

The trick is not to rush, but to pick and chose and then to have loads of fun. Be warned that your homes will be invaded by guests wanting to be part of the many celebrations taking place in the NNE region.

A

ussie Backyard Bird Count is a major part of Bird Week celebrations. This will be the 4th count and it is hoped to reach a target of 1.5 million birds for this #AussieBirdCount.

BirdLife Australia is busy preparing for National Bird Week from the 23rd to 29th October. The National Bird Week is a tradition dating back nearly 100 years and celebrates the incredible variety of beautiful birds found in Australia.

Being part of the Backyard Bird Count is an ideal way for bird lovers to help our birds.

In 2016’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count had a record 61,000 Australians joined in to count more than 1.4 million birds.

BirdLife Australia is asking for volunteers to be part of this years count and you can register yourself or as a group at www.aussiebirdcount.org.au.

Sean Dooley from BirdLife Australia says the results provide a picture of how our birds are faring and that the information collected provides clues to what’s happening with different bird species.

The fun of country races

Spring racing in country north-east Victoria jumps from the starting stalls so grab a picnic rug and a hat and go to the races.

he atmosphere at the country picnic races is very different to the city races. The jockey may be a little bigger and the horses slower but the settings are definitely more beautiful and the feeling is very relaxed and laid back. Families are able to stretch out on picnic blankets with their baskets of goodies and eskies filled with ice.

There is no dress code and outfits range from the glamorous who chose to hit the fashion stage, to the comfortable casuals, and there are even those with a touch of the mad and crazy about them.

At the country races there are the serious punters, those whose preference

it is to just sit back and watch, and everything else in between.

It is simply a great family day out.

The Mansfield District Racing Club will be holding their Melbourne Cup 2017 day races, on of course, Melbourne Cup Day the 7 November, where the feature race is the Catanach Plate.

Mansfield’s records show that it was in 1855 the first race meeting was held and the Mansfield Jockey Club was formed in 1869 and held their first meeting in 1870.

The horses still race and the punters still place their bets and cross their fingers, but some things have changed.

These days the Mansfield races offer

the Marks IGA Fashion on the Field, a Lawn Party with the luxury of a private trackside marquee with all the fittings, private marquees, the member’s clubroom and majestic trees that provide shade perfect to place your picnic rug under.

Country races are filled with colour and loads of family fun and congratulations to the committees that pull these events together, and who take their task very seriously to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves.

They are the window to view, and the door to enter a world of diversity and delight.

It’s show time”, don’t you just love those words. Over the next couple of months, the showgrounds throughout our region of Victoria will have their cobwebs removed, and hinges oiled. Lights, coloured bunting, and signage will be hung, and brooms will be used to sweep clean the pavilions, and fresh hay will be placed on the floors of the stock sheds.

The hardworking volunteer committees, with their willing army of helpers, will be anxiously making the last-minute corrections to the schedules and planning.

Competitors will be organising their animals and will be carefully nurturing and grooming them to ensure they look their best.

There will be yards of cattle, pens of sheep, cage upon cage will be filled with every possible type of chook and duck. There will be an immense effort being lavished upon horses, ensuring that they not only look their best, but perform at their best for the judges. If it can be farmed, bred, grown, ridden, sewn or cooked, it will be at the show.

As in the past, the shows of today are not only to showcase livestock, the shows are a rare opportunity for everyone to meet. They are events when the town folk mix with the country folk on all sorts of levels.

There are very few places where the young and the old can compete against each other and there is no such thing as sexism.

There are no age limits to making homemade preserves, there are no academic levels required to baking the best cup cakes, nor are there any land size imitations on growing he best roses. Anyone can created, produce, bake, grow flowers or vegetables, master the art of floral arrangements in an old pair of boots. As for arts and crafts the diversement of the pieces is as diverse as the artists themselves.

Show committees today embrace a wider range of attractions than in the past, to ensure that there is something for everyone.

Our agricultural shows enable us to reflect on the values and aspirations of our districts and the people 16

Where else can applaud our achievements that range from excellence in cattle breeding to the beauty of a delicate piece of embroidery, and have a great day out. We can play, learn and be enteratined at the shows.

Like all the agricultural shows, the Euroa show has kept the traditonal nineteenth century values of the shows and blended with these the wants and needs of today.

The shearing competition is still one of the highlights of the Euroa show, and the huge Morton Bay fig trees are a testament to how many years audiences have sat under them watching the shearers beat the clock and each other.

It is a wonderful mix of the old and the new, the traditional and the contemporary. One thing that the Euroa Show continues to do and do well is treasure its history.

Sara Murray, Secretary of the Alexandra Show tells us that it’s the contact with the people she enjoys most about the show. “I know the show has been a success,” she admits, “when I see children screaming as they leave the show, not wanting to go.” Sara does extend and apology to the parents.

“I do love watching the kids enjoying themselves, and I love walking around the show looking at all of the ideas that people have had for the show coming into action,” said Sara.

The Ladies Pavilion is a favourite of Sara’s, “when it is filled with hand crafts, flowers and baking it looks fantastic.”

Secretary of the Myrtleford Show, Lis Meehan, joined the Show committee after volunteering as a steward at the jams and preserves pavilion for two years. “The Show is a chance for everyone to get together, for the community to celebrate the rural life style and the achievements of this area.”

Lis has a soft spot for the horticultural exhibits at the show.

“I love the pavilions filled with flowers, preserves, and cooking,” said Lis. Agricultural shows have a major role to play in country life; they are an occasion to promote, and to remind people of the richness and pleasure of living in rural Victoria. u

When a dog learns to retrieve, it opens a whole new world to them”

T

hirty years ago, a bunch of people in Myrtleford gathered weekly, brought together by their mutual love of dogs.

The group started casually training their pet dogs and were initially only interested in pure breeds. As time went on, their interest grew, and they decided that they wanted to hold championship dog shows in Myrtleford, this decision would set them on the road to gaining affiliation with the National Kennel Council.

This was neither an inexpensive nor easy task, but in 1990 they officially became known as the Ovens Valley Canine Club, covering them for insurance and providing them with guidelines and goalposts to work with.

That was then, today the OVCC’s members travel from Wangaratta, Albury, Wodonga, Mt Beauty and Milawa with their dogs, every Sunday to the OVCC grounds in Myrtleford. They bring with them a mixture of pure and cross-bred dogs, including Chihuahuas, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Labradors, working dogs and all types of mixtures

in between. The club may be small, but they do their best to hold a range of courses for all types and sizes of dogs that are set within the guidelines specified by Dogs Victoria.

“There are different classes for each ability and interest, we don’t just lump them all in together,” said life member of the club, Cathy Volkmer. Cathy joined the club after she had purchased her Border Collie. “I was over the moon that there was a dog club, and just wanted the best for him. I just started coming along every week.

“The people involved in the club are wonderful and here was a group of people who also wanted to do more with their pets, it was fantastic,” she said.

Set with the spectacular Mt Buffalo as the backdrop, their purpose-built building opens out onto a lawn area and runs alongside Myrtleford’s main football ground at the RC McNamara Reserve.

Each weekly meeting starts with people and dogs greeting and socialising with each other, there is loads of sniffing, and tea and coffee for the members before the classes begin. The classes

are structured and include the basic Man’s Best Friend course that runs for six to eight weeks or the Responsible Pet Program which teaches good animal husbandry and general pet care.

This course covers how to make sure your pet is not exposed to extreme weather, as well as how best to get your dog in and out of your vehicle.

“One of the most important things we do here is to create good Community Dogs. We want to teach pets, which may be home all day alone while their owners are at work, how to occupy themselves, so they don’t get lonely or bark constantly,” says Cathy.

One of the classes Cathy became interested in after first joining was the agility sessions the club offered, as well as the fun dog sports held on the fourth Sunday of every month. “They are fantastic to watch,” said Cathy. “Dogs don’t have to compete, but some, like the Kelpies and Border Collies like to let off steam,” she said.

tunnels and even need to follow signs and follow exactly what each sign indicates. Another game the dogs love is Fly Ball, a timed team sport where the dogs jump over a line of low jumps and retrieve a ball from a dispenser, and then bring the ball back to the owner. Each Fly Ball team comprises four dogs and takes coordination by the owners, but it is well worth the effort as its fun for both the pet and owner alike.

“At the club, we are very keen to teach people to reward, not punish the dogs during training.

The club is all about positive reinforcement training. We use food a lot as a reward,” said Cathy.

In addition to the competitive sessions, dogs are trained to touch things with their nose and paws, these skills are necessary for guide dogs, and other professional dogs to learn.

“We may introduce to the dogs holding things in their mouth and retrieving. When a dog learns to retrieve it opens a whole new world to them, and some learn to carry all sorts of things in their mouths.

The sky’s the limit with what you can teach a dog.

“I find it constantly amazing to see them learn and go onto more advanced things,” said Cathy.

“At the club, we have no failures, we just keep training and working with the dogs and owners until they pass their specific class,” said Cathy.

The activities held at the club are as diverse as the dogs who attend. The training days that have been held have included visiting dog trainers running classes, some of them Delta trainers; Delta is a method of dog training based on dog behaviour and positive, rewardbased training methods. Workshops are also held by the club and have included grooming, and visit from pet therapists, vets, animal behaviourists, a local Council Ranger, and a police woman. Recently, a dog tracking specialist spoke about dogs and their amazing ability to follow a scent. Some of the dogs in the club have achieved a Community Dog level that enables the dog to be taken to visit people in nursing homes, and patients in hospitals. “The dog visits always bring a smile to the residents and patients,” said Cathy, “and the dogs need to be trained and desensitized to deal with equipment like wheelie walkers.”

The social side of the club is not restricted just to the pets though, according to Cathy. “There is a lovely friendly feel at the club. Some members join and achieve what they want with their pets and leave.

During the heat in January, there are no classes held, but some members still continue to meet up on Sunday mornings and take their dogs for a swim and enjoy a coffee and chat afterward. The club’s big annual event is held over a weekend in April and is the OVCC’s big fundraiser for the year. It is a time when members pull together to organise the event and to help run the catering, administration, grounds committee and marketing, competitions and showing.

W

ildlife like my garden! I can see the evidence of their evening frivolity each morning in the form of poo on my lawn. The wombats are frequent visitors, snacking on new shoots and freshly planted seedlings during winter months and leaving their square poo on various rocks and logs. The family group of grey kangaroos strays into our home territory when we are safely in bed, but thankfully leave few tell-tale signs other than their droppings.

The Ringtail possums hiss during the evening outside wanders, and the yip of sugar gliders sound around the wattles as they feed. Lyrebirds wake us up in late winter with a disconcerting mimic of our family whistle, among other calls, and skitter off quickly to the gully when we go in search for them.

During daylight hours, the small birds take over the garden with their own antics. I leave the door open while working from home, and the scrub wrens hop through the house, munching on breakfast crumbs I haven’t cleaned up. They have a rude shock on weekends when they find the kids are at home, and the house is not quite so easy to negotiate with the increase in activity and noise. Wattlebirds and New Holland Honeyeaters squabble over the banksias for nectar, but my favourite Eastern Spinebills quietly get about their business and hide in the correa, sipping away at the flowers with their long beaks. u

Wildlife in our garden enriches the lives of my family. A morning cuppa outside is wonderful, as I watch the birds or the occasional visit by the Jacky Lizards. We are so used to the regular sounds that are around us that an unusual visit by a Golden Whistler, or the return of a Whipbird, makes us all sit up and take notice. The frogs sing us to sleep each night, with the Perons Tree Frog, living in the downpipe, trying to outdo all of the rest, and echoes of their choruses reverberating through the evening. This is what connects me to my place; this is home.

Mind you, it’s not all bliss and happiness out there. The wombats and I have an ongoing war over the veggie garden; there are some places that just need to be out of bounds to them. I do grumble about the increase in chook food bills in the winter, while the bowerbird population live the high life on the chicken’s pickings and keep increasing in numbers, despite the new and improved strategies to keep them out of the chooks food containers.

Deer really irritate me when they ringbark trees and shrubs that I think I have finally nursed to maturity and removed their guards. Close habitation with immediate or extended family, human and otherwise, is bound to lead to demarcations in boundaries, and the odd frustration, but I wouldn’t be without them. u

Not a moment to spare Spring weather can be a bit tricky, but be assured that there will be no doubting the enjoyment to be had at the festivals in our north-east region of Victoria. So prepare yourself.

S

ome festivals are specific, they celebrate wine and food, art, culture, flora and fauna, music. Then there are the festivals that just rejoice in the whole lot.

We who live in north-east Victoria, revel in all of the festivals; it’s a feast, filled with a plethora of events and activities, and it’s spring.

Over October and November the festival days will be filled with experiences that will create memories and make it all that much harder to go back to work.

One of these is the Spring Arts Festival in Mansfield and it is the heART of the community, according to Gill Belle, president of Arts Mansfield. “This is the 29th year of the Mansfield Spring Arts Festival”, said Gill, “and it’s going to be one huge party.”

“I liken our spring festivals to what the Austrians call ‘Fashing’ which is their fifth season of the year, a celebration of the end of the ski season. It’s a time for them to go crazy and to party, to celebrate,” said Gill.

Mansfield’s Spring In! for October and November, encompasses the Spring Arts Festival, the High Country Festival, Targa Fest, and the Lake Eildon Festival, and it ensurs that every corner of the Mansfield region is covered.

“This year’s Spring Arts starts on Friday October 27 with the Opening Night Party in town and goes through to November 5,” said Gill.

“There will be parties in the hotels, cafés and restaurants throughout the town from 28 October to 2 November, it will be a ball.”

Behind each festival is a horde of people working tirelessly throughout the year and Mansfield Arts is behind the Spring Arts. “We are always welcoming new members, new ideas, and for people to be more involved,” said Gill.

A musician and a teacher Scott Solimo is a busy man with a love of music, and as a teacher who practices what he teaches.

LYNNDA HEARD talks with Scott and found a man loving his family, his music, his students and the people of Wangaratta.

cott Solimo is a musician, a music teacher at Wangaratta High School, a new dad to daughter Pia, plays and sings in a covers duo and is one of the Performing Arts co-ordinators for the 2017 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. Luckily for him, he has a very accepting and patient partner, in Angela Baxter. Music and family have always been a part of Scott’s life, and he has worked hard to maintain that connection while enjoying the ride.

As a musician, Scott describes himself as a blues and jazz man who is looking forward to the annual Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. “It is a great time when world renowned and local artists come to town,” said Scott. Like all musicians Scott has his mentors and Ian Moss, guitarist and vocalist, and who is playing at the 2017 festival, is one of them. “At the festival, I don’t play, I do have a chance to listen to the musicians,” said Scott happily. He also named musician Keb’ Mo’ as an inspiration and an awesome blues guitarist from America.

Scott has two music personas as a professional musician, the ‘Blues Brothers 3677’, and the covers duo ‘Scott and Amanda’. “As the Blues Brothers I play Jake Blues, and Bob Head plays Elwood Blues, it’s a bit of a cult thing,” said Scott.

There have been other influences in Scott’s music life. “Robert Woodfold was my guitar teacher in Wangaratta, he is now retired, but he was my teacher for a long time. After he retired I took over his students for a time; I enjoyed teaching privately, enjoyed passing on the knowledge,” said Scott.

For the past nine years, Scott has taught music at Wangaratta High School, the school that Scott attended as a boy.

“I remember as kids at school, there would be kids jamming all the time, not as much these days,” reflects Scott.

After high school Scott headed to Melbourne to study and attained his Bachelor of Music degree. “While I was studying I played professionally,” said Scott.

On finishing his teaching degree, Scott was approached by the Benalla P-12 College to teach music. “It was a great school and great kids,” said Scott, “and both schools have excellent music facilities.”

Scott proudly talked about the Wangaratta High students who have been in the state Battle of the Bands for the past three years and who have won the last two years. “I teach a Vocational Education and Training (VET) music class, where the students get to work in the industry,” said Scott. “There is a strong music program at the school and students come from other schools to play here.”

The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues is a great event according to Scott; it’s when the local people come together and get involved, where there is a true community spirit thanks to individuals, groups, the town, and the district.

“David Ashfield helped develop a great program for the festival in the past, and he was a mentor to me,” said Scott.

The 2017 programming team is Adam Simmons, Zoe Hauptmann, Frank Davidson and Scott. “We all get on really well, we have different strengths and complement each other,” said Scott.

“I am looking forward to the festival, it’s tricky co-ordinating the artists and the venues as there seem to be more musicians and not enough spots for them to play at,” said Scott, “and we always need more volunteers. It is important to me that the future of the festival is ensured.”

On the weekend of the festival, Scott becomes the student rather than the teacher. “It’s a weekend off for me, it’s my weekend to watch and enjoy the music and not have to play,” said Scott with a smile, “and I look forward to sitting and listening to the blues. I just watch, listen and absorb. In the past, I have helped in the running of the Reid Street venue, and I could never sit and u

I don’t see myself leaving the area, the lifestyle here suits me, and I really enjoy my job,”

relax, I was always supervising the kids.”

Scott grew up in Wangaratta, his dad Mario Solimo came out from Italy when he was about four years old, and his mum Francis, came from Nathalia. “Dad has had a shoe repair business for the past 52 years in Wangaratta called Mario Solimo Shoe Repairs,” explained Scott.

Scott has great musical credentials, two to three nights a week he is part of the professional duo of Scott and Amanda (Baxter) who have been together for the last ten years.

“I have played professionally since I was fifteen,” said Scott, “literally every weekend playing at weddings, private functions, clubs, playing covers. I sing and play the electric guitar; I can also play the bass guitar, drums, and keyboard a bit.”

Guitars are Scott’s love, and his favourite is his Fender Stratocaster ‘89 over his Fender Telecaster ‘52. “I always wanted a ‘96 model Stratocaster,” admitted Scott, “but they are very expensive.”

In the 1990s Scott played with friends in a rock and roll band, playing clubs. There were no pokies then, the crowds were big, and they could always get them up dancing.

In the Solimo family, Scott is not the only musician, dad Mario played the bass guitar and was in a band in the 1970s and 1980s.

“When we wanted to practice at school I have memories of wheeling dad’s amp to school at lunchtime so we could practice,” said Scott.

“Dad and I did a few gigs together.” Today Scott laments that the students often expect to know how to play within minutes, and practice for some is a thing of the past.

Scott loves living in Wangaratta, “it’s great going to Melbourne, but I don’t want to live there.” Angela has a cake design business called Little Red Robyn, the name was inspired by Angela’s mother Robyn; who taught her how to bake when she was a girl. Her parents Robyn and Mark Baldwin live in Yarrawonga.

It’s not all about music for Scott; he loves a spot of fishing, particularly for trout with his mates, when he can find the time. “I enjoyed sport especially tennis, golf, and squash, well I did until I ruptured my Achilles tendon,” said Scott.

Apart from being able to play all the time and practice, Scott intends to pull back on his workload and spend more time with his family, especially since the birth of Pia. “I don’t see myself leaving the area, the lifestyle here suits me, and I really enjoy my job,” said Scott. And, he does see himself going to lots of cake shows after the festival is over. NNE

On offer will be a range of venues from expansive country properties with glorious views of the adjacent mountain ranges, to manicured town blocks where every plant is carefully selected for best affect. The work of enthusiastic home gardeners and professional landscape designers will be showcased on the open garden weekend.

Now in its 27th year, the award winning Alexandra and District Open Gardens weekend continues to provide visitors with a wonderful selection of horticultural delights and garden attractions at the seven gardens that will be open over the weekend.

There is a tremendous amount of hard work that has been put into the gardens by the owners, in preparing their properties for the opening. Toiling on cold frosty winter days is hugely rewarded by the burst of spring growth and blossoms and helping the district to proudly look its best.

New to the list are three gardens in the township of Alexandra. In the middle of town Leanne McCready and Allan Bull have created an intriguing garden with a tall hedge across the front of their property and what’s behind the hedge is a surprise.

Just three years ago Leanne and Allan commenced the hard work of creating the garden by cleaning up; erecting boundary fences and tackling the hard scaping features. They brought in 50 cubic metres of soil and tonnes of sculptural mud rock and created three raised garden beds, a vegetable patch, and pathways that have provided form and interest to the new garden.

Leanne and Allan advise visitors, “Expect to see a cottage style garden with irises, roses, flowering deciduous trees and an established camellia hedge

with a seating area.” More recently their enthusiasm has embraced the nature strip at the front of their home and has been planted with white flowering crepe myrtles that rise above the mass of ground covers. Nestled into this lovely garden will be sculptures from Rusty Sculptures by Russ Brebner that are for sale, and who was commissioned by the Royal Melbourne Zoo, and by Frankston City to design and construct decorative sculptures.

The Alexandra and District Open Gardens Committee are delighted to include two exceptional Marysville properties in the open garden weekend this year. Both of these gardens were professionally designed and take full advantage of their elevated sites, climate and soil conditions to produce stunning results. clean slate after Black Saturday. Mark Browning created the initial garden design, and Phillip Johnson’s team undertook the landscaping, the moat, and the rock placement. The owners tackled the planting according to the plan, discovering along the way the value of soil preparation. Plants were chosen to complement the various seasons and to provide material for Sue’s interest in floristry. Japanese maples make use of afternoon shade, and Canadian lipstick maples are under planted with hellebores and orchids. Other sections of the garden feature herbs, rhododendrons, natives, magnolias and the tri-nations area with New Zealand, South African and Australian native plants.

Lump studio steel work helps to define and complement the various areas of this rural property. Michael and Sue planted grevilleas and salvias to attract bird-life, and a number of Darren Gilbert’s sculptures, for birds to bathe in or perch on are scattered throughout the garden.

Another new garden on the list features a lovely two-acre property in Yarck, and a spacious country property called Glenross that has beautiful views of mountain ranges in Buxton.

In addition to the gorgeous gardens, visitors will be treated to some special features at the open garden venues. Botanical artists and hand painted card demonstrations will take place, and garden sculptures, handmade tools, and plant sales will also feature. My Little Country Kitchen will be providing food from their catering van, and excellent coffee from Roaming Poppy’s van will provide sustenance of the caffeine kind.

By completing a free entry form at any of the open garden gates, visitors have the chance to win one of two superb indulgent packages offered by Holmesglen at Eildon. The young interviewers from Mansfield Secondary College, were unsure what to ask and the older interviewees from Bonnie Doon were nervous about how to answer. It didn’t take long though for them all to relax and enjoy each other’s company and learn a thing or two.

uring September four students from Mansfield Secondary College put their hands up to be a part of a project run by the Bonnie Doon Community Centre. Kristy Wells from the centre was the instigator of the project, which was to have a group of young students interview some of the older members of the Bonnie Doon Community Centre, and create a magazine.

At the end of the project, the students were to produce a publication that they had written, compiled, photographed and designed stories based on the lives of some of the Bonnie Doon residents.

The result is a wonderful combination of older and younger voices. Apart from completing the magazine, the activity turned into a wonderful meeting of the two ages,

that culminated in mutual respect and a lot of laughter.

Everyone involved with the magazine gained more than they expected. Apart from the students and the residents there was Jane Still, english teacher, from Mansfield Secondary College, and Gabby Nowicki, Coordinator from the Bonnie Doon Community Centre who also contributed greatly to the success of the project.

In fact, all who were engaged in putting the magazine together gained a lot more out of it than they initially realised.

The students were especially humbled by the experience and discovered that the world is bigger than they thought. In addition, they also learnt some valuable skills along the way.

The four Year 7 and 8 students briefly summed up their experience.

Merran, who trained as a nurse and who had worked at Lauriston Girls’ School for 12 years in Melbourne, provides one day a week a valuable service for those who are unable to reach the hospital or doctors in Mansfield. Merran says she has found the Community Centre brings visitors to Bonnie Doon all week long rather than just on the weekends for sporting events.

She says, “it’s always just like family day”.

“The whole experience was good.

“It made me appreciate Bonnie Doon more, especially the history of the area.

“There were elements of Ken’s history that are so different from our lives today that I didn’t realise.

“His story was exciting in its simplicity.

“Part of the experience that I liked the best was finding out so much about Ken and the actual writing of the article.

“Ken was open and warm and he made my job easier, and I enjoyed writing the article.

“If I could, I would like to explore more of his museum, and spend more time with him.

Ken was born on February 1937, (I must say, though, that he looks a great deal younger then this) and moved to Bonnie Doon with his parents and two older brothers. Ken’s father, Walter Pollard, was a Policeman, his work the reason that the family of five moved to Bonnie Doon.

His Mother, Willi Pollard, stayed at home.”

I don’t paint because I have to, but rather because l love doing it,” said Hettie. Her favourite painting is of a female lion and its cub. Hettie also loved painting the streets of English towns.“ Lachlan Lamont interviewed Hettie Kirk “I enjoyed all of the experience, I’m usually pretty bad about putting thoughts on to paper, but I found writing someone else’s words a lot easier.

“I learnt that even though you are writing the story, it is their story you are writing about. It’s a whole different way of writing.

“It was good meeting Hettie and I would like to talk more to her about her life.

“You only see the world through your eyes and meeting them helps to see the world through their eyes, and another perspective.

“There was nothing about the project that I didn’t enjoy.

“Hettie was a lovely warm person who seemed to be a bit shy, but opened up to me and was trusting.

“Her love of fishing and the joy she has in being near the lake was evident.

“Joyce enjoys being involved with the running of the OppShop at the Community Centre and is there as often as she can.

“It was great to hear that she had fun learning new computer skills at the Community Centre.

“A truly lovely woman, full of warmth and trust.

I always preferred to fish on my own, I loved the quiet and I had my own tinny with an outboard motor,” said Joyce.

Occasionally Joyce would fish with a friend nearby, but being on the water by herself was her special time.”

With the help of the North by North-East Creative team and RL Media in Mansfield, the magazine was finally put together and sent off to the printers.

The excitement from Lachlan, Laila, Hayley and Audrey on seeing their completed magazine could be gauged by the amount of chatter between them. The louder it became the more they were enjoying themselves and feeling proud of what they had accomplished. They will never forget the kindness they received from Hettie, Bill, Ken, Joyce and Merran. NNE

The first frolic Foals can be susceptible to illness in those first crucial days of life. Veterinary surgeon, Dr. SARAH CAVILL from CavEquine in Benalla, tells us about some of the conditions to be aware of, and to avoid when your foal is born.

I

n the first few days after a healthy foal is born, it transforms from a lanky, stumbling mass of legs into a frolicking, leaping and bucking joy to observe.

Unfortunately, many conditions can affect foals in these first days of life, often with life threatening consequences. There are many potential problems that can be avoided with early detection and treatment by observant breeders and veterinarians.

Colostrum, aka Liquid Gold, is critically important to your foal’s disease immunity.

It needs to begin drinking from the mare and ingesting colostrum within the first few hours of being born. Foals take 10 to 14 days to develop their own resistance in the form of antibodies to the pathogens such as bacteria.

They are reliant on antibodies from the mare’s first milk. The mare’s antibodies are absorbed by the foal’s intestinal tract, and from there enter the foal’s bloodstream. The maximum absorption of this protection takes place in the first six hours of life and reduces after just 24 hours.

A simple blood test can determine whether the foal has absorbed enough antibodies

(immunoglobulins) to provide the protection it needs, and this test can be done at 12 to 24 hours of age. The advantage of doing this blood test prior to the foal being 24 hours old is that it provides an opportunity for the foal to be given extra colostrum via a stomach tube. You may need to source colostrum from a donor mare if the foal’s mother does not have good quality colostrum. Colostrum can also be stored and frozen.

If the foal reaches 24 hours of age and has inadequate immunoglobulins, it may require an intravenous infusion of plasma to increase these immunoglobulins. This can be considerably more expensive than giving colostrum via a stomach tube, so it pays to identify at risk foals early.

A foal at risk can be identified when the foal is having difficulty drinking from the mare, born to a mare that has had an infection of the placenta, or the mare has been losing milk from her udder for days or weeks before delivery, and in doing so losing valuable colostrum.

Sometimes perfectly normal looking foals can have dangerously low immunoglobulin levels.

is susceptible to infection. Frequently, bacteria will enter the bloodstream via the umbilicus -where the umbilical cord was attached, and create septicaemia (blood poisoning), which can prove fatal. If the foal survives the septicaemia, they can often succumb to a joint ill, which is septic arthritis that requires very prompt diagnosis and treatment for the foal to have any chance at an athletic career.

A lame foal, especially ones with a temperature, should always be examined promptly by a vet, as delaying treatment by even a day can significantly reduce the likelihood of a positive outcome.

It is important to ensure that the foal is drinking from the mare within the first 24 hours as it will aid in the ingestion of the colostrum. Some foals require gentle guidance to the udder and help to latch on to a teat the first few tries, but generally, they will pick it up quickly. Occasionally maiden mares, who have just had their first foal, will need to be briefly restrained to stop them walking around in circles while the foal is trying to latch on. They can be so amazed at the small creature that has just been born, they don’t realise they have to stand still to let them drink.

When foals are born, the length of their legs is already approximately 90% of their eventual adult height. u

It is common for foals to have a flexural deformity of their legs, which essentially means the leg is not as straight as it should be, and this can cause the overall conformation of the foal to be incorrect. Foals with this problem require prompt assessment and sometimes medical or surgical treatment. Many of these leg deformities will improve on their own as the foal walks around and gains strength.

It is important to consult with your vet as some conditions require the foal to be box rested as the condition will worsen if the foal is left turned out in a paddock. Maiden mares will run around a lot and tire the foal out, which leaves them more susceptible to musculoskeletal injuries affecting the muscles, bones, and joints.

Most foals are born in spring when the grass is green, the days sunny and the nights not too fresh and ideal.

Some mares foal in December and January if mated late in the season, and these foals will need to contend with much hotter daytime temperatures. This means careful attention must be paid to their hydration status and their drinking habits, as they dehydrate very quickly over the hot summer months.

An episode of diarrhoea can lead to severe dehydration if they are not drinking well. A quick method to check for dehydration is to pinch the skin on the neck gently to form a ‘tent.’ When the skin does not slide back but remains in a ‘tent’ shape for more than two seconds, the foal is dehydrated.

Dehydration can lead to further problems like corneal ulceration, where the foal’s eyes will sink back into the sockets; the eyelids turn in (entropian) and rub on the sensitive cornea of the eye. This also requires prompt veterinary attention.

In the first 12 hours, the foal will also pass its first poo, called meconium. This is a black-green substance, ranging from a pasty consistency to rock hard. A foal that has been stressed during delivery may pass the meconium at the time of delivery. Some foals, particularly colts with a narrower pelvis than fillies, will strain to pass the meconium and need help by administering an enema.

A foal that is having trouble passing the meconium may be just a little restless and not drinking well or can be in quite severe abdominal pain and roll around on the ground.

Again, if unsure contact your vet.

The newborn foal gains strength and character quickly, and close observation within those first crucial three days of life is paramount to preventing and managing the conditions that can affect them. NNE

A new member to the family is always greeted with joy, and LOUISE MUNRO does not spare the gushes as she tells us of her feelings at being a first-time grandparent.

O

n July 27 at around 5am our beautiful grandson was born, the old boy and I have been given the most extraordinary gift by my stepson and his lovely wife. I have heard other grandparents say how special the love is for a grandchild, but until one has experienced that feeling first hand, it is hard to comprehend.

The feeling is similar to having your first child, but dare I say better, due to only experiencing the ‘best bits.’

My theory is that this is the ‘circle of life’ and all the trials and tribulations of being a parent suddenly pay dividends 62

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2017

when you become a grandie. No doubt, you have heard the saying that, ‘being a grandparent means you get to hold them and then hand them back,’ well it’s true.

The old boy and I aren’t experiencing all the symptoms that parenting can bring, like sleep deprivation, sore nipples, treading the boards at 4am calming a crying bub, and dirty nappies. We get the good stuff and can I just say, we bloody well love it.

Not that I disliked parenting, on the contrary, the old boy and I feel honoured to be blessed with three adult children, but if any parent is honest with

themselves, it’s the most rewarding yet hardest thing you will ever do. Especially if you want to do it well and raise decent people and watch on as your children care for their children.

Anyway, let me tell the story of our beautiful grandson’s birth. Due to him having four sets of grandparents, hospital visits were scheduled so as not to exhaust the new parents and bubba.

Looking into his dark, baby blue eyes for the first time was the most unique feeling. Here was the beginning of the next generation of our family. All of a sudden I wanted to live forever, to

watch this precious bundle grow to be a handsome, kind, loving parent. Alas, that will not be in my control, but if I at least can still be around for his 21st that alone will be a wonderful gift in itself.

When the old boy had his first embrace, he had tears in his eyes, which made mine misty; he was speechless with a mixture of pure happiness and pride. He just instantly knew that he was going to have a special connection with this little man.

There was a feeling of pride and contentment when my stepson changed his boy’s nappy; it was just like he had already completed this task a hundred times over. He wasn’t fazed by the crying and was taking to parenthood like a duck to water. The look in our daughterin-law’s eyes, when she held her baby, was pure love. “It brings a tear to a glass eye,” the old boy whispered.

In typical Munro family fashion, the new dad was so proud of his wife and her efforts in the birthing process, with no drugs, and no stitches. Well hell, we were all impressed with that, but new dad now had a new look on his face when he gazed at his wife, one of awe, which in turn made me proud of him. I know it’s

a cliché, but every birth is a miracle, and our son had witnessed an extraordinary miracle, the birth of his son.

After our first grandparent visit the old boy and I were on cloud nine. We decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at a five-star restaurant. It’s not every day a grandson is born. During our celebration meal, we challenged each other to talk all about our new found feelings of being new grandparents without getting dewy eyed. We both failed miserably and laughed and cried all at the same time. While in this mood of unadulterated euphoria, I went mad on social media posting pics.

In the car, on the way home I had a song repeating in my head and started singing it out loud, “beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy.” Yep, the touching song written by John Lennon after his wife Yoko gave birth to their son Sean. I found it on iTunes then downloaded and played it loudly with the old boy and I singing along at the tops of our voices.

Our other two adult children have met their new nephew, but the old boy and I weren’t there. The kids sent us photos, but it’s not the same as witnessing them

holding him for the first time.

We have spoken to them all over the phone, and they are also smitten.

“He’s just so little and sweet,” said our daughter. Our 25-year-old son, gently said, “Yeah when I held him it was pretty special Mum.” OMG! We all love this little man so much.

I really look forward to when our family can all be together, and I can sit back to observe how everyone interacts with this new little addition.

A wise friend, who has many grandchildren, told me that, “there is something special about the first one.”

Call for a professional snake handler

G

ood bye cold weather and hello snakes. This year they are coming out of hibernation early according to the experts, and they will be grumpy, and they will be hungry.

It may not seem the right time for snake to be appearing because the weather still has that definite chill to it. Don’t be deceived, they are already about and are slithering out of their winter bunkers.

Here are just some tips to keep you safe.

Most importatnly, leave them alone. It is reported that 99% of snake bits occur when people try to catch, pick up or kill a snake. Snakes will naturally lash out and bite if they feel threatened.

Remeber that snakes are protected, so do not kill them. There are some excellent professional snake catchers in our region, call them.

Take steps to prevent meeting a snake. Wear snake boots or gaiters when you are walking through long grass or the bush. When you are busy working outside, wear gloves.

Snakes are shy creatures generally and will try and avoid you.

If you are bitten by a snake then immediately call an ambulance and try to stay calm. Apply a pressure bandage over the bite and up your arm or leg and stay as still as possible.

Avoiding them is the most important thing to remember, think before you pick up that piece of tin, watch when you are in the wood shed and always cast your eyes high and low when you are in the chook shed. NNE

Picture perfect wedding

A

relaxed, informal, social day enjoying great food, music, company and the weather, was what Ant Bateup and Bec Selby had always pictured for their wedding day. The day in March, 2017 delivered just that for the couple. The picturesque location at Amongst the Sticks in Goughs Bay, provided the perfect venue. The kids were entertained with a jumping castle, while the 100 adult guests indulged in the relaxed environment and in the cocktail style catering.

The already stunning location was further enhanced with flowers from Edith and May in Mansfield. Kat’s Got Your Tongue, Kat Gannon-James, made the delicious wedding cake and Andy Dolling and her team from Davon’s Hair, along with makeup by Lisa Kelleher,

ensured the bride was as stunning as ever.

The Fem Belling Quintet and DJ Paul Riley kept all the guests entertained, while Ben Annear did a fantastic job as the emcee. Jamie Walter’s cadillac delivered Bec and her attendant, Lucinda Sorace while Ant and his groomsman, Nathan Kelleher arrived via a Alpine Helicopter Charter. Celebrant Robyn Baddeley ensured it was all official.

Ant and Bec together, with their three children, Rueben, Lia, and Jarreh, enjoyed some photo time at a local Boorolite garden prior to the ceremony to ensure the little one’s outfits were all intact, and to capture that memorable family moment. usic festivals and camping were the inspiration for Ashleigh Lambert and Canaan Campbell’s wedding in April 2017. It was the Howqua Valley Views property that ticked all the boxes for the ideal setting for the couple.

The rustic, relaxed, big party themed wedding was attended by 110 family and friends who all eagerly watched as Mary Anne Egan pronounced Ashleigh and Canaan, husband and wife.

Amongst The Sticks restaurant, not only supplied the delicious food, but they also made the wedding cake. Tables, chairs, linen and all the trimmings were provided by Mansfield Party Hire. Edith and May from Mansfield styled the flowers, Mercury DJ Hire from Melbourne was the entertainment, Davon’s Hair Salon Mansfield did the hair do’s and Ky Cronin, also from Mansfield, applied the make-up.

Ryan McMahon was the best man with Rowan Campbell as groomsman. Sarah DeVisser was the maid of honour and Celeste McGuinness, the bridesmaid.

Organising a wedding so far away from home was made a whole lot easier with the outstanding service provided by local suppliers, and the willingness of their guests to uproot their lives for a couple of days to come celebrate with them. NNE

hen Theresa Pawson flew from New Zealand to explore the high country for a short three-month stay, she never imagined seven years later she would be marrying the man of her dreams, Bonnie Doon local, Matt Stevenson.

New Year’s Eve 2016 saw their home on Malcolm Street Mansfield converted into a relaxed country and rustic setting for the wedding reception. The ceremony was conducted at the Mansfield Catholic Church, where Father Terence Naughtin presided over the formalities in front of the 110 guests.

With the weather proving a little challenging in the lead-up, everyone pulled together the day before to assist with the setup.

Groomsman and bridesmaids were Darren Wheeler, Glen Monahan, Marissa Prudden, Deliah Mieke and the flower girl was Macey Stevenson. Theresa’s sister, Emily was the coordinator on the day and also created the flower arrangements using flowers from a friend’s garden. Edith and May prepared the bouquets and boutonnieres.

As Theresa is a chef, there was no doubting that she would had to have a hand in the catering and co-ordinated the food with good friend and chef Andrew Gorton, who took over on the day.

Family friend and vocalist Emelina Phillips, along with local organist Bec Griffin, provided the music for the ceremony, and musician Tom Carty from Melbourne entertained at the reception.

According to the newlyweds, the day was a beautiful blur of happiness, tears, and laughter, remembering those who couldn’t be with them, and filled with good food, fantastic music and a few toasts.

wenty-three years ago, when Rosemarie Thompson decided to give up smoking, she did not in her wildest dreams imagine that this decision would lead her, and her husband Mark, to the joint ownership of a successful and award-winning food production company. Rosemarie admitted, “Once the business was established King Valley Fine Foods just grew and grew and grew.” u

The idea for the business was sparked while Rosemarie was enjoying cooking at the Hibernian Hotel in Beechworth, and felt that she needed some sort of motivation to ensure that she wasn’t tempted to pick up a cigarette.

“I decided that I would put the money that I would have otherwise spent on cigarettes to a positive use,” she said.

“With the money, I invested in preserving jars, collected windfall fruit, accepted excess produce from family and friends and got to work,” and she hasn’t stopped since.

Rosemarie and Mark now jointly manage their commercial food production plant in the heart of the King Valley at Whitfield, manufacturing top quality condiments and foods that are sold all over Australia. For the last 14 years, they have also been exporting their produce to the Hong Kong market.

The key to their success, they believe is that they are constantly challenging themselves. New products, new taste combinations, improving processes and aiming for constant improvement throughout the business are all hallmarks of their company.

Their latest product development soon to be launched is a range of gluten free pastry mixes that work. Rosemarie explains, (without giving away any secrets), “I have concentrated on producing high protein, gluten free mixes that are all about nutrition.”

Glancing through their extensive range of pestos, pâtés, chutneys, dips, pasta sauces, mayonnaises, reductions, and vinaigrettes is both head spinning and mouthwatering. Beetroot and macadamia pesto, mint and pumpkin seed pesto (inspired by the excess mint in the garden), mushroom pâté or Milawa Blue salad dressing sound, or pomegranate and orange reduction or champagne rhubarb vinaigrette and these are but a few. Rosemarie certainly has a gift for coming up with successful and delicious taste combinations that complement and that can add something special to any salad or a simple meal, that little touch extra that can make us all look like good cooks.

A variety of suggestions for the uses of the condiments come easily for Rosemarie as she is constantly thinking about the mixes and the fact that she loves to cook and experiment when in her kitchen. The reductions can be used as salad dressings or drizzled on roast meats and vegetables for a u 74

gorgeous caramelisation. Rosemarie and Mark are proud of the fact that many of their products can be used in a number of ways. The pestos are great with pasta, but can also make a perfect accompaniment to a cheese platter. They have really thought through the nutrition, the taste, and the value for both cooking, and entertaining.

The couple has genuinely kept the basis of their food production fresh, local and sustainable. Together they grow much of their produce in their home garden in Edi Upper and supplement this home-harvest with their hydroponically grown herbs, their own olive oil, and more fruit and vegetables from the garden at their production plant in Whitfield. Rosemarie and Mark are justifiably proud of the fact that they are self-sufficient with a 7.2kw of solar photovoltaic electricity generation that provides more power back to the grid than they use, in both their production plant and at home.

At this stage, King Valley Fine Foods is a wholesale production plant only, but do not despair, the range of retail outlets, gourmet food stores, and local produce stores that stock King Valley Fine Foods is growing.

You can purchase their products from a number of outlets in the north-east including The Weekend Local in Euroa, The Giddy Goat in Yarck, The Mansfield Produce Store and Snow Road Produce in Milawa, to name but a few.

When Rosemarie was asked how long she thought the demand would keep growing for their products would continue, she laughed and replied, “So far, so good.

We just keep reinventing and re-energising ourselves to ensure interest, quality and of course nutrition, and that seems to appeal to an ever-growing customer base. This makes us very happy here in Edi Upper and Whitfield.�

Buckwheat Torte 750g red capsicum (approx. 6) 1kg eggplant (2 good size ones) olive oil for frying 700g ricotta 1 cup grated tasty cheese ½ cup grated parmesan 1 /3 cup Greek yoghurt 250g baby spinach 375 g finely sliced Swiss cheese 400g good quality feta cheese ½ cup King Valley Fine Foods Sundried Tomato and Capsicum Pâté Batter for crepes 1 cup white rice flour ¾ cup besan (chick pea) flour approx. 800ml water

½ cup buckwheat flour 2 eggs

Preheat oven to 175°C. Chargrill capsicums and place in a bowl. Cover bowl with cling wrap and set aside. Slice the eggplant into 5mm slices. Pan fry in oil until golden brown.

In a bowl, mix the ricotta, tasty cheese, parmesan cheese, yoghurt, and spinach until well combined. Cut the feta into four even slices. Remove the skin from the capsicum, cut and lay them flat.

Leave these ingredients aside, ready for assembling.

Crepes: In a bowl, combine the flours.

Add the eggs and water and mix into a

smooth batter. If too thick, add a little more water. Spray a large crepe pan with oil and when very hot add a ladle-full of batter and swirl around to make a thin crepe. When cooked on the base, flip the crepe and cook the second side.

Makes eight crepes.

To assemble: Start with one crepe and spread with two tablespoons of the sundried tomato and capsicum pâté.

Top with half of the capsicum, so it covers most of the crepe.

Top with two slices of Swiss cheese, another crepe, then half of the eggplant

to cover the crepe. Add two slices of Swiss cheese and another crepe. Spread the ricotta mix over the crepe, forming a slight dome shape. Add another crepe then cover with the feta, another crepe, then back to the ricotta mix. Use the remaining ingredients in reverse order to complete the torte. Top the final crepe with the remainder of the Swiss cheese overlapping the sides.

Bake for 10 minutes, refrigerate until cold, then cut into wedges to serve.”

Casual fine dining with a view

PAT O’BRYAN ventured out on a cold rainy day to the Terracotta Restaurant and Bar at the Marysville Golf Course and discovered that the ideal way to enjoy the afternoon was not by swinging a club, but by savoring the delights offered on the menu.

arysville is renowned for its natural beauty, and sitting in the Terracotta Restaurant and Bar looking out across the parklands of the Marysville Golf Course at the majestic gums that lead down to the Steavenson River, and up into the tall forests of the ranges, it was confirmed; it is beautiful.

The inside of the Terracotta Restaurant is also lovely. Opened in March 2017, the restaurant is filled with soft greens and terracotta hues, mixed with natural wood and huge windows, all of which gives the restaurant an ambiance filled with soft warmth. It was a cold, wet day and from first impressions, this was shaping up as the perfect venue for enjoying a lunch out, with a view.

Without a booking Barbara, one of the owners, warmly welcomed this lone diner. The lunch was to be for two but sadly ended with a table for one.

The room was quiet, and an excellent table for four was selected by Barbara, and reset for one without a moment’s hesitation. A bottle of chilled water and menus were promptly placed on the simple, yet elegantly set table.

From the ‘Something Light’ section of the menu, the smoked Buxton trout mousse ($15) was selected as the first course. The dish was beautifully presented and came with horseradish foam, trout caviar, watercress, and was accompanied with house-made wattleseed lavosh. Each element of the dish had been given thought, and the mix worked beautifully. It would have been easy to stop there if you wanted a light lunch, but there was more to come.

baked damper ($20), came next. The deliciously rich tasting dish came in a bowl that would have stonkered the best of diners. Beside the bowl lay the warm damper roll, and as it was pulled open the glorious smell of freshly baked bread with cardamom seeds wafted up. It was only natural that with fresh bread and deliciously rich gravy in front of you, to ‘do the dip’; freshly baked bread and delicious sauce, perfect. It was delicious, but it was impossible for this diner to finish the lamb, as much as they wanted to, the dish was just too generous in size and in taste.

On the wine list, there was a selection of local wines, some unknown to this diner. After a brief talk with Barbara, she suggested a glass of the Utter Shiraz 2014 from Murrindindi. Even though this was not listed as ‘by the glass,’ Barbara organised it without a second thought, and it was splendid. There are times such as this that it would have been wise to have organised a lift, or at least book a room to stay nearby. Oh well, next time.

To allow time to digest the first two courses and make way for a sweet ending to the meal, a chance to stop and take in more of the room and the view was taken. The room was subtly divided by sculptured solid wood screens on wheels, which enabled the restaurant to be altered to suit the occasion. Outside, a large wooden deck along two sides of the restaurant would be an excellent spot to sit on a warm day, but it was the view, it was just as lovely as the rain poured down, especially from sitting inside.

Dessert was the chocolate marquise with white chocolate soil and kaffir lime sorbet ($14). The dish was more than enough to satisfy the sweet taste wanted to end this meal. What shined was the

lime sorbet; it went perfectly with the lushness of the chocolate.

Other items on the lunch menu included the sharing platter of local produce for two, today’s soup with house-made damper, slow cooked pulled meat sandwich with a choice of Coca Cola pork, yoghurt and turmeric chicken or marinated beef brisket with a house baked malt bread roll and a daily salad.

For something more, there was a house-made linguine with lemon cream, and Buxton smoked trout, maple and ginger poached salmon, soba noodles, sugar snap peas and heirloom carrots and a dry aged sirloin, herb crusted potatoes, wattle-seed roasted red onion served with butter sauce, sautéed green beans and rich Shiraz glaze.

As for other desserts, there was a white chocolate semifreddo with mixed berry coulis, scones, jam and cream, and a Yarra Valley selection of cheeses, with black sesame lavosh.

The Terracotta Restaurant dinner menu varies slightly from the lunch menu, and both proudly boast the use of local produce in their dishes. There was one problem with the menu, the terracotta hue of the paper made it tricky to read the type.

This is one golf club where you leave the clubs in the car and head straight for a day; afternoon or evening watching others hit a hole-in-one while you enjoy the Terracotta Restaurant and Bar. The dishes were not only delicious, but were delivered with excellent service, in a venue that was simply, just great.

Bubble judging A

s the sun warms the days so our thoughts turn to cooling, refreshing beverages and what better refreshment than a glass of bubbles. As to the perfect shape of the glass, well that varies with the individual’s tastes, as does the type of sparkling wine you put in it.

Marysville will again host the 2017 Australian Sparkling Wine Show (ASWS) in October.

Dedicated to only sparkling wines made using natural and traditional fermenting methods, the show attracts

sparkling wines from across the nation.

Established in 2010 the show just keeps on growing.

This year there are six classes being judged, Sparkling White Wines, Sparkling White Wine (Traditional Method), Sparkling Rosé Wine, Sparkling Red Wine, Sweet and Fruity Sparkling Wines and this year they have added Prosecco Sparkling Wine.

One of the four associate judges at the ASWS, is Paul Evans, wine maker and owner of Sedona Estate Winery in Murrindindi.

Paul explained his involvement in the show. “For the last three years I was a steward at the show and I was approached to be an associated judge by the committee, for this years show and of course I said yes.”

“I am very interested in sparkling wines, especially as we make one, and we support events in Murrindindi.”

Sparkling wine was where Paul began his wine making. “My career in wines started at Chandon in the Yarra Valley where I worked for a year.”

and I took up the position as assistant wine maker from 1996 to 2002.”

“We will release our Sedona Sparkling 2015 Vintage Brut in November this year. It’s made up of 50% chardonnay and 50% pinot noir.”

At the show Paul is looking forward to the old yeasty complex styles of sparkling wine. “Wines that have nice nutty characters, almost biscuit aromas are what I get excited about. A good sparkling, in my opinion, needs to be done in the traditional method.”

The AWAS is great, said Paul, it’s a treat and where he can gain a lot of experience and always learn something more about wine. As well as all that, Paul tastes some great wines.

The judging of the wines takes place on 17 October, and the Marysville Communtiy Tasting day is on the 18 October, in Marysville.

A taste of massive proportions

After a visit to the Rutherglen wine region around 20 years ago, IAN DUNN discovered Warrabilla Wines and he has continued to follow with great delight, its growth, development and vintages.

I

n the 1990s the Deft Palate and I were obliged to visit Corowa and Rutherglen on a number of occasions and while there, were steered by a local to Warrabilla vineyard with the words, “they are new and young, but they’re going to be awfully good.”

On our first visit, the Warrabilla vineyard was not yet productive but the owner, Andrew Sutherland Smith, was already producing great wine using grapes accessed from elsewhere. At the time we purchased an excellent 1994 Glenrowan Shiraz, liked it a lot and ordered a dozen. We drank the last of that dozen a few months ago. The cork was in excellent condition, and the wine quite beautiful. A twenty-three-year-old Shiraz in perfect shape; this explains why we have kept tasting the Warrabilla wines ever since.

The Rutherglen region is known for its fortified wines, its Muscat, port, and Tokay are well-regarded worldwide and I’ve never tasted anything else remotely like them. There are also many who absolutely love the table wines from Rutherglen, mainly the reds, although I do rate the Rutherglen Semillon very highly. Some think that the style of wine produced at Rutherglen is old hat and not in keeping with current tastes. This ignores the massive changes in winemaking employed at Rutherglen since the 1970s.

A recent tasting of the Warrabilla wines was notable for the richness and fruit driven flavours which fairly burst out of each glass. We tasted two of the Durifs, a variety Rutherglen is known for, plus a Shiraz and a Grenache. These are the wines currently available from Warrabilla and range from the 2014 to the 2016 vintages.

The Durifs were the upmarket 2015 limited release Parola’s wine, and the 2014 reserve Durif. We thought the 2015 limited release wine was, by a slender 82

margin, the better wine, but it was close. Both wines had the darkest colour imaginable, and the taste of each wine was immediately attractive, and to both of us, there was a sensation of chocolate. The label on the limited release wine declares that it is massive, massive, and massive and we agreed.

Equally impressive was the 2015 limited release Parola’s Shiraz, In fact, the Deft Palate, who is a great fan of Durif, was inclined to think that this Shiraz was the best of the wines we tasted. Immediately attractive, again it’s the fruit that dominates. The pepper usually associated with Shiraz is exhibited on the end palate, with little tannin.

Finally, we tasted a wine which was quite new to us, the Warrabilla 2016 reserve Grenache. We may have made a mistake in tasting this rather mellower, even plummy, wine simultaneously with the huge wines referred to above and were not initially terribly impressed. We didn’t finish this wine on day one, and when we returned to the Grenache a day later, we liked it much more. This one does have some tannin on the later palate.

The Warrabilla wines that we tasted contain more alcohol than any table wines of which I’m aware. Both the limited release Durif and Shiraz are a whopping 17% alcohol, and even the Grenache has a rating of 16.5%, while the reserve Durif has a mere 16%. What must be appreciated is that these wines keep, it seems, forever.

The winemaker recommends that the two Durifs should be cellared for 10 years plus, and the Shiraz and Grenache it is suggested, should be drunk from 2021 onwards. In the circumstances, it is remarkable just how drinkable they are now, especially if decanted.

Cooking with booze SALLY LYNCH brings together two of the many fine products that our region is known for, goat meat and wine, and creates a simple, delicious meal that is full of flavour.

D

rink it or cook with it, is the question, but as the saying goes “if you wouldn’t drink it, then you shouldn’t cook with

it.”

Why cook with alcohol? Alcohol in cooking helps bring out the flavour in the food, it’s like using salt in a recipe.

There is a scientific reason for this, but let’s just say that alcohol is a great friend to food and adds to the flavour of the food. When used in small quantities, alcohol added to your dish can improve the aroma of the dish. And it does more, alcohol binds with the water and the fat in the dish and helps carry the flavours of herbs and the like into the meat when it is in the marinade.

The alcohol can be beer, wine or liquor, cider, homebrew or crazy juju juice straight from the vat, it all works.

We drink it while cooking, of course, we deglaze our pans, most of us marinate, we flambé, we infuse, we

poach – and most of us get saucy with it.

Oh, the joy booze can bring to our food.

Booze is also a hero in the kitchen.

Take overripe fruit for example, when the sugar is high in overripe fruit, and it is near death, alcohol can bring it back to life.

Now back to the cooking part. Let’s take a goat, the most consumed meat in the world and fast becoming meat we are known for here in the north-east, thanks of course to our awarded and applauded local producer Myrrhee Goats. Goat meat is delicious, easy to cook with, and just has that celebratory edge to it.

Here in Rutherglen, we have a winemaker who has bucked the trend for big bold Rutherglen reds and is treading his own path by producing Italian style wines with an Australian twist, that are specifically designed for food.

Sangiovese, the classic Italian drinking wine, the kind that goes with most things, is the starting point for all

things quaffable. Ricky James, of James & Co and his wife Georgie, have just opened a cellar door in Rutherglen, a stunning space that makes sipping a total joy.

We have the goat we have the wine, so we cook.

To start, we are going to plunge our goat shoulder into a small vat of Sangiovese and take it from there.

The Sangiovese will, of course, give it a delicious flavour, but also a great colour. Let it be noted, alcohol does not tenderise, but oh the flavour is something great.

For this recipe, I rubbed the goat with a blend of different ground up peppers. I used long Indonesian peppers, black and white peppercorns and Sichuan pepper.

Then I simply lay the goat in a dish and doused it in the vino and let sit for the day, about six hours.

Mirepoix, a bay leaf or two, some fresh thyme and a tub of the fresh chicken stock was added, and the goat was left simmering slowly in a slow oven for three hours.

Now reduce the sauce, drink a bit more wine, and serve the delicious goat with some creamy polenta, olives and fresh herb oil; totally decadent and delicious. NNE

Thanks for the great spread A

s much as we enjoy the complexity of flavour in our dishes, the finesse of the fine dining experience, there is still a place for simplicity in what we eat.

At the opening of the Merton Hall back in June this year, it was hard not to notice the shear pleasure the 120 people who attended the opening had in the afternoon tea spread.

Watching as the cloth covered trestle tables are laden with plates of goodies, it is hard not to smile at the faces of the people milling around, deciding what morsel of food they will try first.

Do they choose from the freshly made sandwiches cut in quarters of course, or the scones with lashings of home made jam and topped with a good dollop of cream. Once the choice is made it is devoured with relish and then back to the table for more of the same or for a different selection.

Afternoon teas such as these take place all the time, and they are wonderful in their modesty. Each plate has been put together with the thought and care, and made to look easy, but it is still a meal, and one that the creator wants to look good on the table.

It’s a great combination, good simple finger food, a crowd of people and an occasion to celebrate.

Next time you are fortunate enough to attend an afternoon or morning tea, remember to take full advantage of what is on offer and enjoy every mouthful.

W

hen I read recently that at least four per cent of bosses are sociopaths, I did a double take. Surely the figure is much higher than that?

From my own extensive experience it’s closer to 40%, but maybe I’ve just been unlucky. Whatever the actual number in Australia, it’s going to be far greater in a totalitarian state like North Korea.

This excellent and gripping book of seven short stories is unique; other books critical of crazy regimes are always published after the authors have escaped to freedom.

Bandi is still living in his home country and took a great risk in smuggling this manuscript out to the world. It paints a very sorry picture of a society under huge pressure, with everyone living in fear of falling out of favour. Written about 30 years ago, these tales are still very relevant today in explaining the behaviour of a leader of unquestioned authority.

The first story, ‘Record of a Defection,’ is of a mismatched couple.

The wife, from a family with an unblemished record, is desperately 90

trying to support her husband. He is always under suspicion by the authorities because of some minor sin committed by his grandfather. That sin caused the whole family to be banished to an utterly inhospitable area, and to be forever in the bad books with no hope of rehabilitation, even down through the generations.

No matter how big a contribution they make, they’re always pushed to the sidelines. To add to their woes, the Party Secretary believes he has the right to sexually harass the wife.

‘Life of a Swift Steed’ tells the story of two elderly brothers; each has a mature elm tree growing in his backyard. The trees were planted when the occupying Japanese had been driven out of their country, and the Communist Party had taken over. Both had worked incredibly hard to establish the new society, driven by their shared belief in the wonderful benefits to come.

Their Elm trees grew and thrived as symbols of that belief. As the brothers grow older, the terrible treatment they are given by their employers is enhanced by their lack of progress in material comforts, and they became cynical and

disenchanted with the revolution.

‘Pandemonium,’ the most harrowing of all these shocking stories demonstrates the duplicity and mindless cruelty of the whole regime. An elderly couple, travelling with their small granddaughter, is caught up in a terrible situation.

The Great Leader is travelling in the same area, but his requirements are much greater and more important than the rest of the population’s. Because he’s in the area, all traffic on the trains and roads is stopped for several days, so that hundreds of people are stranded in one small railway station with nothing to eat or drink. Despite the enforced misery, the old woman is tricked into making a public declaration of the Leader’s generosity and magnificence.

Despite their grim message, these stories are well told, and Bandi is obviously a very accomplished writer.

Born in 1950 just as the revolution began, he is one of many who have gradually become disillusioned with the lack of progress and the abuse of power, by those who cling to it so fiercely. NNE

Over the weekend of October 21 and 22 the annual fishing challenge will be held with brilliant prizes to be won and there are added extras.

There is to be a twilight market with fireworks, and a food and wine festival will be held at the pondage over the weekend.

The people become his friends

I

n 1979 Noel O’Meara and his wife Robyn came to Euroa. “It was the job that brought me to up to Euroa,” said Noel, “I was offered a job managing an accountancy firm in Shepparton.” It was in Euroa though that Noel and Robyn chose to live.

For the next eleven years Noel managed the Shepparton and Euroa branches of the accountancy firm and while there achieved his Bachelor of Business.

The O’Mearas made the decision to stay in the country to bring up their growing family.

“I decided to stay and we bought the Euroa practice I had been managing, on the 30th June 1990,” said Noel. The date Noel acquired the business gives a good indication how good an accountant he is, right at the end of the financial year.

The business, Noel G O’Meara & Associates, taxation and business advisors, now also has an office in

Benalla.

“We rented an office in Binney Street at first, now we have the office at the corner of Binney and Railway Streets in Euroa,” said Noel.

Noel enjoys his work very much, “Every tax term is different and I need to keep up with changes.” Noel explained that he attends a number of seminars each year to keep up to date with the numerous tax law changes.

Over the years Noel’s work as an accountant and business advisor has helped many people and as he explains, “you get to know people well and they become good friends.”

Noel has seen changes to Euroa over the years, one large influence in the town has been the establishment of the race horse industry in the area.

“I enjoy the business, I enjoy being an accountant and helping people,” said Noel. “I always liked working with figures and every year is different, it keeps you

on your toes.”

Robyn also works in the office and does accounting work and small audits.

“It is good working together,” said Noel.

The O’Mearas have nine children, Angela, Gary, Rebecca, Melissa, Anthony, Carmen, Andrew, Patrick and Damien and seventeen grandchildren.

“We have always enjoyed living in Euroa and it’s a good place to bring up kids,” said Noel, “and we get on well with all the people here.”

Noel and Robyn live out of town at Sheans Creek.
