This month we’d like to start by thanking you all for your incredible support, especially over the last few weeks. Following the news that we’ve secured our future through a sale to Steve Holt of Kirkstall Brewery, we have been incredibly humbled by the messages of support and kindness that have flooded in.

We are over the moon that we can continue as an independent brewery, with the added support of a great friend and industry leader. We’re incredibly excited to work together and plan for the future of North.

Whilst we find our feet, we’ve had to pause our specials and collaborations. This month we’ve got an exciting new release to share with you all, that will be hitting the shelves in Tesco soon.

However, as this is the only one, and to show our thanks for being just the most amazing bunch,

we’ve doubled up on some of our much-loved core range beers and given you the inside scoop on each.

We have a great line-up scheduled for 2024, continuing to brew our core range classics, as well as our innovative specials and collaborations that we’ve been recognised for, for almost a decade. We cannot wait to share these with you each month, as well as welcoming you to join us at Springwell and across our North venues for a year packed full of fantastic events.

The continuous love, support and kindness that you amazing people have shown has truly meant the world to us.

NORTH BEER CLUB EXCLUSIVE Introducing Another World, a super crushable Hazy DDH IPA that will be hitting the shelves of Tesco nationwide this month.

The grist includes flaked and naked oats, creating a pillowy base for the hops to shine. Mosaic Cryo in the whirlpool delivers invigorating grapefruit and lime aromas, cutting through the softness, accompanied by a zesty, refreshing light sherbet fizz. The dry hop features Citra, El Dorado and Sabro, producing mouth-watering tropical fruity tones of pink guava, overripe mango and tangy tangerine.

It all concludes with a light bitterness and a smooth coconut finish that you wish would never end.

Triple Fruited Gose

One of our most popular TFG’s from 2019, this gose caught the eye of our friends at Dishoom and is now regularly brewed at Springwell.

Our signature thick, slick, and salty gose recipe comprised of a big dose of oats, ale malt, salt and a sprinkle of lactose is infused with ALL the organic fruit puree! There’s a beautiful harmony in the way the sweet, zingy guava interacts with the salinity of the beer’s base that makes this TFG extra special. It’s a plethora of sherbet, tart, sweet, sappy tropical flavour and aroma, that pairs beautifully with spicy dishes.

INVISIBLE CITIES Style

Talus + Citra + Mosaic

Originally created in 2022, this hazy IPA is one of our most popular exports.

Made using a fine crush of extra pale malt and oats, it’s soft, smooth, and loaded with Talus, Citra, and Mosaic hops. It’s a bounty of coconut cream, lime, succulent pineapple, and juicy orange that swirl into a laid-back delight of tropical punch.

It has been a favourite of staff across our North venues, and we just love the design from Refold. Inspired by Italo Convino’s novel, that explores the invisible edges between reality and fiction.

THE SQUARE BALL Style

California Pale Ale

Brewed in collaboration with The Square Ball, the Leeds United fanzine and podcast, to celebrate our home team, Leeds United!

Originally brewed as the team moved into the Premier League in August 2020, this release broke our webshop with the number of orders that came flooding in, with over 4,000 cans shipped in one week!

Citra, Mosaic, Cascade and Chinook hops bring a refreshing and sessionable balance of sweet tropical fruit and crisp bitterness that keeps us sipping on together.

This has become a firm favourite of the fans, not just in Leeds, but in Scandinavia too!

ATLANTIS Style

Light, bright and laid back, Atlantis is a 4.1% soft and crushable session IPA, first brewed 3 years ago. Made with American Mosaic and Citra hops and Australian Galaxy hops, Atlantis sings with vibrant pithy grapefruit and crushed pine needle aroma and bursts with sweet blueberry and fleshy pineapple flavour, all rounded off with a satisfying bitter finish that keeps you coming back for more.

FIELD RECORDINGS x NOITA Style

Muscat IPA

Talus + Nelson Sauvin + Motueka

This collaboration is one of our favourite releases from last year. Teaming up with Finnish urban winery, Noita, provided us the chance to take our experimentation to the next level.

For this Muscat IPA, we delved into the historical brewing styles that combined grape and grain. taking a closer look at how different yeasts can bring forward complex aromas, known as thiols, not just within grapes but the hops as well.

Using the finest organic Austrian Muscat grapes, shipped from the same vineyards that supply Noita, we kept the base light and clean, with a combination of Pilsner malt and wheat.

Balancing Nelson Sauvin, Talus and Motueka hops against the characteristics of Muscat, to enhance, but not overpower, the bright citrus notes of gooseberry. The combination of Kveik and Sauvignon Blanc yeast during fermentation has heightened these thiols, bringing forward the fruitier notes of the hops.

A deliciously crisp, clean, and bright IPA, laced with these decadent thiols of tangy citrus, grapefruit, and a light floral finish.

Cryo Pop + Citra + El Dorado

Our third collaboration with Newcastle’s Full Circle Brewing Co brings us to making an IPA perfect for sipping in the sunshine!

An extra fine and fluffy base made up of pale malt, oats and chit malt sets the tone for laid back easy drinking! One of our favourite hop combos, Citra, and El Dorado, creates a bright squash of sweet fleshy pear, orange and peach with Yakima Cheif’s CRYO POP™ blend bringing a succulent tropical fruit salad medley. The chorus of fruits doesn’t stop there. We finished the beer by circulating it through lemon zest to draw out bright, balmy, and tart flavours and aromatics. The result is an undoubtable, proper sunshine refresher!

Our first-ever gluten free beer, released in 2021. Crispy, zesty, pithy, refreshingly bitter, and massively lacking in the gluten department. Open Space has all the flavour of a classic West Coast, packed into a lower ABV and is gluten free! A beautiful, golden biscuity base has a steady dry hop of Simcoe and Chinook boasts sticky grapefruit, lemon, floral bouquets, and pine flavours with a thirstquenching bitter finish.

ULTRA PHASE Style

We are entering the Ultra Phase… A sumptuous smooth base of pale malt, wheat, naked oats and rolled oats with Citra, Enigma and Simcoe hops brings continuous blasts of flavour. A base note of tinned apricot halves and pithy zest springboards candied mango, white wine-gums and gooseberry with crushed pine needles, lemon peel and passionfruit finishing with a pinching bite. Soft, fluffy, rounded and laced with dazzling fresh tropical fruit flavour.

Designed as a homage to the pulp science fiction of the 1960’s, Refold has worked his magic to create another stunning design that stands out on the supermarket shelves.

SPUTNIK Style

Hazy Pale

Sputnik was named after the first man-made satellite and was the first hazy pale that we brewed at our original Taverner’s Walk site in 2015.

A balance between a good malt presence, fermented using traditional English yeast, and dry hopped with new world hops, Ekuanot, Columbus and Citra hops. Bold flavours of juicy honeydew melon, citrus grapefruit, ripe mango and a touch of lychee finish with crisp bitterness. The ingredients we use bind together to create an easy drinking pale ale that can be enjoyed by anyone at any time.

DISTANT CALL Style

Distant Call takes its name from Broadcast’s 2006 single and continues the love of sci-fi that appears throughout the North range.

A soft and smooth New England IPA made with our house pale malt, rolled oats and chit malt to provide a gentle, soft and pillowy body. Azacca and Mosaic ooze with sweet sticky passion fruit, overripe mango and freshly squeezed orange juice and crushed pine needles with Sabro providing its unmistakable qualities of fresh lime zest, coconut, and a touch of spice on the finish.

LOST COSMONAUTS Style

Lost Cosmonauts has been a part of the North family for a while now. The counterpart of Sputnik, this IPA is named after the Russian conspiracy theory that fed into the science fiction of the 60’s space age.

An unsung hero of our regular brews, that we first brewed it back in March 2019. Since then, we’ve been tweaking and adjusting the recipe to bring it to where it is now.

We started building the recipe from our beloved Transmission, adjusting the alcohol content and adding a double dry hop to really amp up the flavours! Loaded with the iconic Mosaic and backed up with Ekuanot and Columbus, it covers a lot of ground on the flavour scale. Fresh piney aroma and flavour are upfront and rounded off with bags of intense sharp tropical pineapple and guava and rich apricot and mango stone fruit.

THE NORTH FAMILY We’ve come a long way since opening North Bar on New Briggate back in 1997, and over the last 27 years each one of our venues has come into its own. Each offer something unique and personal to the neighbourhood, embodying community spirit, and being a hub for the freshest and latest releases from North and our friends across the industry.

NORTH BAR The OG! The place where North began and one of the very first craft beer bars in the UK. This bar has had the honour of being the first place to pour Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Brooklyn Lager in Britain, as well as hosting the first pours for Magic Rock and Northern Monk.

FURTHER NORTH 10 years later, John and Christian spread their wings out of the city centre (hence the name) and joined the Chapel Allerton community. Did you know that the upstairs seating used to be HQ for North?

ALFRED Opened in 2011 and the perfect, cosy bar to call into after a walk around the beautiful Meanwood Valley. Its name has two origins: King Alfred’s Castle, the historical ruins off of Stonegate Road, and the legendary Alfred Hitchcock!

PRESTON Nestled into Oakwood high street and just a short walk from Roundhay Park, this bar started life out as a pharmacy, run by the Preston family.

To this day, you can still see the beautiful mosaic tile on the front step with the family name.

NORTH BAR SOCIAL One of the many bars in Otley, it has become a hub for the local community, hosting bike rides and food vendors in their beautiful beer garden throughout the summer. Prior to becoming part of the North family, it was someone’s home – a little odd with the round display window perhaps?

NORTH BAR HARROGATE Opened in 2015, just after the brewery began, this venue was the largest North bar in the family (until we opened the taprooms).

Its event space has hosted music nights, parties and even a monthly Spanish class.

NORTH TAPROOM : SOVEREIGN STREET The first city centre taproom, opened in 2018. Not only did it provide 24 lines of the freshest North beers, but it also became the first-ever venue for Little Bao Boy. 3 Sovereign Square, Sovereign Street, Leeds, LS1 4BA

SPRINGWELL Our second brewery home, moving from 2,500 sq ft at Taverner’s Walk to 21,000 sq ft. The steel works company here before us built our first brew deck for the original kit! And prior to that, it was a tannery, with housing for the workers on the hill opposite.

NORTH TAPROOM : CIRCLE SQUARE This site was once the home of BBC North West, where they used to film Mastermind and A Question of Sport. We had our eye on this venue before the pandemic, but Covid rather put a stopper on things. Since opening last year, its welcomed many people to enjoy baos and beers, becoming part of the local community.

ALLEY CATS We welcomed Dan and the team at Alley Cats to the North family last October, but this venue has been a hub for lovers of delicious food, beers, and music since 2017.

Their burgers are mouth-wateringly good!
