A Word From Us

The Man With the Golden Voice

Merry actual Christmas! How is it December already!?

The holidays are a time to get together with family, catch up, exchange presents and pleasantries whilst nailing Guinness at an unimaginable time (well, that’s my Christmas anyway). We’ve got a guide for festive events, markets and that twilight zone after Boxing Day where you can’t quite get a handle on what day it actually is. Betwixmas, some people call it. There’s also a nod to some more charitable things you can do this month to help those that may not have it so swell. You can get involved with a 5k run with the Children’s Hospital Charity or just dress up like an elf and spread the word on social media - flick over to page 53 for more information on that. On the cover, you’ll see the Man With the Golden Voice: Paul Carrack. Our writer Charlotte was beaming after speaking with the musician ahead of his gig at Sheffield City Hall. With 50 years in music under his belt, he’s got quite a few tales to tell and he certainly obliged us during our phone conversation. There’s also a few pages dedicated to the best bits of 2019. From local events to local celebrities putting the North of Sheffield on the map, these last 12 months have been fantastic for the area and the city. More to come in 2020? You bet. Catch our January magazine for the best of what’s to come but in the meantime, do enjoy this issue and thanks for your support since our launch in the summer. Editor - Paul Stimpson

Attercliffe’s Olympic Legacy Park will bring a huge boost to the area New developments at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park are set to provide a £60m boost to the Attercliffe area of the city. Projects at the park will include the redevelopment and expansion of the Banners building, now home to law firm Wosskow Brown, on Attercliffe Road. A major mixed-use development is proposed for the nearby Adelphi square site, comprising bars, restaurants, shops, housing, a themed meeting venue, workspace and a branded hotel. The English Institute of Sport Sheffield will create a 100-bedroom hotel centred on the needs of athletes and para-athletes and support staff who use the facilities at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, helping to attract more Olympic and Paralympic squads to the city. Work will also start in December of an improved Community Stadium, currently used by Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club and Sheffield United Women Football Club.

A number of buildings have been developed at the Olympic Legacy Park in the last few years, including the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering, Oasis Academy School and University Technical College, joining established facilities such as the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, iceSheffield and Fly DSA Arena. High profile briefings are underway for the establishment of The Centre for Child Health Technology which will co-locate at the park. Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is being developed by Legacy Park Ltd, a partnership between Sheffield city council, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield City Trust, South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Integrated Care System and Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network.

Regeneration Hillsborough A 25m development opposite Hillsborough Stadium to get the green light A proposed £25m redevelopment of a site opposite Hillsborough Stadium currently used as a car park on Sheffield Wednesday match days has been recommended to be approved. Jaguar Estates and Bridges Fund Management submitted plans earlier this year for the former Kennings Truck Centre, which closed in the mid-1980s. Full planning permission is sought for the demolition of the remaining buildings on the site and construction of a new mixed-use development providing about 135,000 sq ft of space. The new scheme will feature three retail units, eight storage and distribution units, two drivethru restaurants and a vehicle maintenance and repair unit. It has been estimated that up to 250 jobs could be created.

An officer's report prepared for the meeting with the council’s Planning and Highways Committe recommends that consent is granted for the development. The report said: "The proposal would provide significant economic benefits derived from the creation of new business development and employment opportunities. "It is considered that there are no adverse effects that significantly outweigh the benefits of the proposed development." It also noted the potential impact on Hillsborough Exchange shopping centre and the Halifax Road and the Catch Bar Lane local centres, but said this could be managed with conditions.

The Sheffield Hurricane

The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk

February 16th, 1962: the day a hurricane struck Sheffield devastating all in its path, leaving four dead and over 250 people injured. Sheffielders received assistance from civil defence teams, royal engineers and private builders, under the same protocol as a wartime emergency, in an attempt to make 6,000 homes watertight before the storm hit. The effort was honourable but no match for the might that later hit the seven hills; roofs were ripped away from houses, masonry buckled, and over 70,000 homes were damaged. Further catastrophe was narrowly avoided when a packed train travelling from London to Sheffield had to perform an emergency stop, narrowly avoiding heavy debris blown onto the track. Attercliffe, Crookes and Heeley were the areas worst hit, and the storm claimed its victims as the winds grew stronger through the night. The recovery was long and expensive, costing the equivalent of £40 million pounds in today’s money, and a stark reminder of the damage that nature can inflict upon us. www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 13

Untameable, tha knows New Barry Hines exhibition to showcase early draftsof Kesand Threads Unseen material from the life and work of Barry Hines are on display to the public for the first time as part of a new exhibition at Sheffield University. The free Untameable exhibition is inspired by Barry Hines’ writing and the contents of his archive at the University’s library. Curated by artists Patrick Murphy and Anton Want, the exhibition highlights Hines’ works, mostly covering the personal and political landscapes of working class life in South Yorkshire. The exhibition features the original script of Threads as well as an invitation to a private screening of the film that was sent to people in Sheffield who acted as extras. Items from the archive featured in the exhibition include; the earliest draft of a Kestrel for a Knave, sections of an unpublished screenplay that is set against the backdrop of the miners’ strike, and an early draft of the novel The Gamekeeper – which Hines wrote on a University of Sheffield textbook while working in the university’s Arts Tower building. The exhibition also includes materials and photographs from Hines’ early life, including his report book from Ecclesfield Grammar School, sports achievement certificates and his old school scarf.

Dr Dave Forrest from the University of Sheffield said: “This exhibition is about bringing the work of Barry Hines back into the present tense. The questions his novels, films and television dramas raise are just as relevant now as they were 50 years ago.” Anton Want added: "Barry's work as a writer has an authenticity that people of all ages respond to, his stories are their stories. He was the genuine article and has influenced countless lives both in this region and internationally, first as a teacher and later as a writer. I'd urge people to visit the exhibition which offers a personal insight into his wonderful archives at the University’s Library along with some rare and unseen material."

Patrick Murphy said: “This project offered the great opportunity of working with the Barry Hines Archive and creating new work in response to it. I found it very rewarding and a chance to visually explore my own working class background. Works such as A Kestrel for a Knave are timeless and universal.” The exhibition, Untameable, is running now from Monday to Friday between 9am and 7pm, and Saturdays between 12pm and 6pm, at the University of Sheffield’s Western Bank Library until 20 December 2019. Admission is free and open to the public.

The

Future of Fargate Theplanswill complement the ongoing development at theMoor

A bid made by Sheffield city council and supported by the University of Sheffield has been successful in the first round of applications to secure funding for improvements to Sheffield’s historic High Street and Fargate. Work is now under way to complete a business case to bid (in the Spring 2020) for up to £25m from the government’s Future High Streets Fund. The government’s £1bn Future High Streets Fund aims to transform and regenerate high streets across England, making them fit for the future. It will help revitalise local high streets and boost economic buoyancy in town centres where people live, shop, use services, and spend their leisure time. Following discussions with wide ranging stakeholders, Sheffield city council and the University of Sheffield are now presenting draft proposals for the bid to gather support for a future vision for Fargate and High Street. The survey will help build an accurate picture of how people view and use Fargate and High Street now, and what they wish to see included in plans for the future. Professor Vanessa Toulmin of the University of Sheffield, said “The team has been very pleased to contribute to the development of the Future High Streets Fund bid. The workshops undertaken have

gained insights from over 120 stakeholders. Dr Bobby Nisha and a team of students from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning helped develop a virtual reality experience where Sheffielders will get the chance to feel what it might be like to walk around in a revived Fargate. I am hopeful of a fantastic outcome for the service.” Sheffield city council’s director of city centre development, Nalin Seneviratne said: “We are thrilled to be undertaking the next stage in the bidding process and we are well under way to building a strong business case to support the £25m bid to revitalise the historic city centre but we need Sheffielders help! “We are really keen to get the public’s perspective of how people use the city centre. We want people to tell us their experiences of how they live, work, shop and enjoy the space currently so we can put forward the best case to fit the needs of future city centre users.” Nalin added “If successful, the financial boost for the historic heart of the city will help shape the future of how we use this space and to realise the ambitions for a thriving city. We are confident that the huge progress we have already made to develop new vibrancy in this part of the city centre will stand us in good stead and, if successful, the Future High Streets Fund will help us to do even more.”

What made you want to raise the money for Newlife charity? I wanted to raise money for Newlife as their cause is very close to home for me so I have seen what a great difference their work makes. Newlife offers advice, equipment and a whole host of other services to families with children with different needs. My little sister is in a wheelchair herself and in the past my family received funding from Newlife to purchase a hoist and a comfortable chair for her - which made life just that little easier for my family. I wanted to give something back! Were you at all nervous about the magnitude of the journey? I was never nervous about my journey when I was planning it. I found it rather funny and exciting above all. Three days after setting off from Singapore I had a moment of realisation of how large

Eurasia was and how slow I was on a bicycle. That was my "oh shit" moment... I was willing to take my time and to detour and not rush and rest lots and try not to look too much at the map. I remember distinctly looking lots at the map. It was laughable! My GPS tracking application (Polarsteps) recorded the trace that I left on the road with my bicycle. After three days of cycling in the stifling humidity I felt pretty spent! I looked at the map and zoomed out first to Malaysia and progress seemed tedious. Then to South-East Asia and the trace became a dot, and then prospecting the size of China and then all of Eurasia against the minute distance I had already covered, I felt like I may well have bitten off a bit more than I could chew.

18 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

What country or area was the most challenging for you to ride through? Two standout challenging places: Xinjiang, China and Germany. In Xinjiang I was under police escort for a large proportion of the time due to the political sensitivity of the region. The land was barren and vast but the real difficulty was in negotiating myriad police checkpoint and arguing the cause to keep cycling and not be placed in the back of a police car. The police were mostly reasonably friendly as the people but the job they were doing was so wearing and mentally drove me close to the edge... In Germany it was difficult for a few reasons. 1.) The fact that German drivers were so nervous to overtake, they often stayed behind me for far longer than the drivers in any other country which put me on edge. Germany also has an amazing network of cycle lanes but they zig-zag

NEWS

into all the quaint little villages. At that point I did not want quaint. I wanted to be home. So often, much to the discontent of the German driver, I took to the road. My style of riding (on the road and directly) and their style of driving (with extreme prudence) didn't mix. The rules of most other countries were far more Laissez-faire than this one and the strictness and correctness and order of everything was stifling. What were the best and worst things about your time spent riding alone? The best thing is solitude, freedom and independence, the worst is loneliness and boredom. I had lots of time to think but did very little of it. I do not at all regret doing the trip solo. I did things the way I wanted to. If I wanted to stop, I stopped, if I wanted to cycle to midnight, I could. There were no boundaries and no structure. I also hardly ever felt truly "alone" on the trip. The myriad of friendly and curious people - especially in Asia - was a constant pillar of support through the trip. I would have gotten nowhere without the kindness of strangers who became friends. In ALL countries.

Were there any places you visited that you would love to go back to? If somebody told me I had to do the entire trip again, you know what, I think I would be content to do so. I would even go as far to say I would happily spend more time in each and every country I visited. They all had their idiosyncratic virtues. I reserve a special place for Burma - this country was golden. Every day was a shock to the system, both good and bad. It was the one country I left with a very heavy heart. I encourage any person of the mildest adventurous disposition to visit this country. I am now writing a book of my travels. I will announce details of this on Instagram (@roadjake). Interested readers are more than welcome to follow me. I will also be running talks and I'm thinking about running "out of the comfort zone" workshops and trips! Watch this space... I have managed to raise ÂŁ3,300 out of my ÂŁ5,000 fundraising target so any donations from readers would be more than welcome: justgiving.com/cycling-eurasia-for-charity

2019 Thebestbitsof

Christ on a bike, that year’s flown by hasn’t it? It’s something that’s said every year around this time but 2019 has certainly gone by in a flash. It feels like yesterday we were putting the finishing touches to the first NorthBound Magazine back in June. We’ve had five magazines so far, received some top feedback, met some ace people and most importantly seen this area of Sheffield subtly going about its business in typical fashion. We’ve hosted major events, seen a number of ace new venues open up throughout the year and some Pitsmoor legends taking centre stage with some incredible projects that have garnered national acclaim. So without further ado, let’s take a pew and have a look back at some of our best moments of 2019.

HILLSBOROUGH PARK HOSTS TRAMLINES

For the second year running, Hillsborough Park hosted the sold-out Tramlines Festival back in July of this year. Since its inception 11 years ago, Tramlines has gone from strength to strength, out-growing its previous homes on Devonshire Green and at the Ponderosa. This year saw the likes of Doves, Two Door Cinema Club and the mighty Nile Rodgers and Chic grace Hillsborough Park which once again hosted 40,000 festival goers every day over the weekend of 19-21 July, making the festival the most successful in its history.

BRADFIELD BREWERY TAKE OVER THE WHARNCLIFFE ARMS

The Wharncliffe Arms recently reopened after locals Bradfield Brewery purchased the boozer, citing a ‘keen interest in traditional style community pub houses’ and, after the successful launch of their second pub with the King & Miller in Deepcar, landed the keys to the pub. After a few months of renovation, the Wharncliffe Arms reopened as the brewery’s third official tap, featuring a selection of cask ales from the Farmers Ales range produced by the brewery, as well as a great selection of fine wines, spirits and soft drinks. The pub was previously renowned for its community feel and friendly atmosphere, something which Bradfield Brewery is keen to reinstate.

SKI VILLAGE

The abandoned Ski Village to the north of the city centre is set for a multi-million pound redevelopment. In the summer, Sheffield city council agreed a 150 year lease with Extreme Destinations for an ‘internationally recognised’ sport and leisure destination at the old ski village site at Parkwood Springs. The ambitious plans will see the destination ‘rival the best in the world’, bring 400 new jobs and one million new visitors to Sheffield. The 21-hectare site, with Extreme at the helm, will be developed into a modern ski slope, numerous mountain biking trails, a hub building with shops, bars and restaurants as well as visitor accommodation, alongside a major international operator.

NEW NEW KIDS KIDS ON ONTHE THE BLOCK BLOCK

THE PUNCH BOWL

After a five month refurbishment under brand new management in True North Brew Co, The Punch Bowl in Crookes reopened to the locals in August. True North, which already owns a number of venues throughout Yorkshire and Derbyshire including The Broadfield on Abbeydale Road and the Riverside in Kelham Island, added its wealth of experience in the hospitality industry to reinvent the venue from the food and drink, to the look and atmosphere.

NORTHERN MONKEY

Like Brass Monkey before it, Middlewood Road’s Northern Monkey opened this year to fantastic feedback from the locals, with business booming almost every night. And much like the other Monkey venue, which opened shortly before Christmas, Northern Monkey’s take on specialist craft ales and gin, plus the distinctive murals of local artist Paul Stavely have helped it, and the surrounding area of Hillsborough, become a proper destination.

SPORT SHACK

Following the success of the first bar on Ecclesall Road, owners Danny Grayson and James Dobson rolled out two more Sport Shacks across Sheffield in 2019. One of those was at Hillsborough Corner, offering up the perfect venue for a pre-match pint for Wednesdayites.

THE OEC

After teasing the new £5 million venue throughout the summer, the OEC finally opened its doors last month. Nestled between two of Sheffield’s iconic venues: Napoleons Casino and Owlerton Sports Stadium, the OEC features a range of multi-purpose suites and has the capacity to host weddings, conferences, large banquets, indoor sporting events and concerts and opened late last month.

71

Opening in early November, 71 is a new British-themed restaurant in Ecclesfield. Head chef Jordan, who was aiming to bring something new to the local dining scene, has brought a modern British menu with a European influence to the table featuring the likes of beef cheek and duck breast, eggs benedict and pie and chips – showcasing the wide range of dishes on offer.

AESTHETE

Last month, the mother and daughter team behind Alyssum Cafe Bistro in Crookesmoor opened their second venue with Aesthete in Walkley - a space where one can enjoy freshly prepared food, homemade cakes and speciality coffee and tea in a relaxing and homely atmosphere. Open from 9am to 5pm in the week and open until 10pm on the weekend, Aesthete has everything covered with a separate menu for brunch, dinner, cocktails and coffee – with each menu featuring a wide-range of dishes, bites and tipples. www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 31

people JOE SCARBOROUGH

The much-loved Sheffield artist hosted his first ever retrospective exhibition this year entitled Life in the Big Village. The Pitsmoor-born painter saw thousands visit the Millennium Gallery to check out his work, taking in his inspiring and optimistic view on life. He even adorned the cover of the second issue of NorthBound Magazine for an in-depth interview on his narrow boat where he told us: “My job is more than just a drawer, I’m presenting your life back to you, like the old music hall artists who sang about what they knew; I’m just painting about what I know.”

MATT HELDERS

He’s come a long way from High Green, the Arctic Monkeys sticksman, but during his downtime away from the world famous band, he spends his time teaming up with fellow Sheffielder James O’Hara and opening cafes in his home city. That’s what he did this year, anyway. Helders opened not one, but two venues in Sheffield – one at Weston Park Museum, and the other at the Millennium Gallery in the city centre. Next time you’re in town, seek out Ambulo – it’s a gorgeous place for a cuppa.

RICHARD HAWLEY

Another of Pitsmoor’s more famous sons, Richard Hawley thrust himself back onto centre stage this year. Firstly with the score for the incredible Park Hill musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge (which received national acclaim, by the way), and secondly with his most successful album to date in Further. 32 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

Paul Carrack

The Crookesborn artist is celebrating 50 years in the music business with a tour in 2020. NorthBound’s Charlotte Stanbra caught up with Paul Carrack ahead of his show at Sheffield City Hall.

PHOTO:PAULCOX

THE GOLDEN VOICE

Paul Carrack rose to prominence in the 1970s as a member of Mike and the Mechanics and Ace. The success carried on during the 80s and 90s where his solo records brought him national acclaim. Phil Collins described Carrack as someone with ‘’an incredible voice who could sing the telephone directory’’, whilst music mag Record Collector said: "If vocal talent equalled financial success, Paul Carrack would be a bigger name than Elton John." We caught up with him ahead of his 2020 tour to chat about taking his kids on tour, playing with the Smiths and surviving 50 years in the music industry.

www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 35

My son wentto thelocalmusic college, hecame homeoneday and hesaid‘Did youplaywith The Smiths?!’I saidyeahand suddenlyIwent upabout10 placesin his estimations! Insteadofbeing grumpyoldDad Iwascoolfor a minute.

I’ve supported all of my kids in whatever they wanted to do, but I’m happy that most of them have got ‘proper’ jobs, with knowing how tough and unfair the music business can be and how much determination is needed to make a career out of. It’s a pretty tricky existence really, but he definitely has music in his genes. He’s very much like I was, he hated school. He’s been down a few cul-de-sacs and has done a lot of the stupid things that I did when I was young, but he’s turned out to be a great kid, as well as a very good musician. I say kid, he’s 30, I think, if not older. It’s fantastic having him by my side, especially on tour because I always wonder whether I spent enough time at home with my family after being on the road a lot. When I was back home, I always tried my best to make up for it by being involved in everything, but we had four kids so it was absolute mayhem for years, as you can imagine, total chaos! Back to the question; it’s so great that we get to spend a lot more time together while playing, it’s been very good for our relationship and I hope he would say the same.

PHOTO:LENASEMMELROGGEN

Eyup Paul. How are you feeling about your 2020 tour? We’re always on tour, but I’m feeling good about this one. It’s what we do and what we have done pretty much every year for the last 20 years. The band is made up of great Sheffield lads with the exception of my son who’s a Londoner- he’s one of two drummers and he’s been in the band for five or six years. He loves being a part of the old codgers, fixing up plenty of good sound and Sheffield common sense! When we begin the tour in January it’s the start of another busy year for us - we’re doing 30 shows in the UK. After that I’ll go back to my part-time job, which is playing organ in Eric Clapton’s band which takes us all over the place. I’m looking forward to it, as I do every time! What is it like working alongside your son? You don’t hear of that much… I hadn’t heard of it much either, until recently! Of course, we’re all getting old now though, but other than that it’s fantastic actually. I mean, I’ve got four kids - I say kids, they’re all grown up now, in fact my eldest boy was 40 in November. My 30 year old (and drummer) is the only one who’s gone down the path of trying to be a musician; he’s a bit of a chip off the old block!

36 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

You brought out These Days last year (2018), are we to expect any new music from you in the near future? Well, I haven’t had the time to make a new album or anything like that, as this year I’ve been super busy! I’ve been plonking my carbon footprint down a little bit, especially this year. As well as playing with my own band, I’ve been playing a lot with the Eric Clapton band for the last five years. We did the normal, January, February, March with my band, April I went to Japan with Eric, over the summer we did loads of festivals in Europe, with my band and with Eric’s and then I’ve been to America with him too. I’ve just been so busy, so there’s no music, well no new music, but we have compiled or should I say, my good friend Peter Van-Hook, has compiled this sort of 3-4 CD box set of live stuff from the last 20 years. We have recorded a lot of the shows so we’ve got 20 years’ worth of stuff that the poor bugger has had to listen to - it’ll be on digital format, but will also be available as a physical box set with around 70-80 tracks on there. We’ve also got a Christmas album coming out! About 10 years ago, maybe more than that, we’ll say around 2006, I made a Christmas album with a big band (a swing/jazz band). SWR Big Band (SWR is like the BBC in Germany), invited me to sing an album’s worth of the old chestnuts, the Christmas classics, which I’d never done before. I’m not adverse to a challenge, so I went and did that album and for the last 15 years I’ve been going over there and doing concerts for Christmas- the album will be a new compilation of everything Christmas. You’re a legend in your own right, but what was it like to have been in session with the likes of The Smiths, The Pretenders and Roxy Music, just to name a few? It’s amazing and when you put it all on paper, there are quite a lot of different people. It’s great! I’ve never really seen myself as a session guy. I mean, I left school at 15 and I was just in a band and absolutely skint from up until my 20s. I was then in the band called Ace and we had a big hit called ‘How Long?’, that unfortunately kind of fizzled out; music was changing, punk-rock and all that was growing and I thought that was me finished. I kind of made a crust by working on sessions because back in those days there was a lot of session work. I was bluffing really; I’m completely self-taught so I was a bit insecure when I initially got booked to do these sessions because I’d think “oh I hope I can get away with it”. It just so happens that over the

PHOTO:LENA SEMMELROGGEN

Paul Carrack

years I’ve got to play with a lot of different people, The Smiths in particular; that was kind of weird because they’d just recorded their first album. I’d never heard of them and I didn’t know what they were about, so it’s always funny how people bring that one up. My son went to the local music college, he came home one day and he said “Did you play with The Smiths?!” I said yeah and suddenly I went up about 10 places in his estimations! Instead of being grumpy old Dad I was cool for a minute. So the short answer is, it’s been fantastic, I’ve been really lucky to play with some fantastic people. Have you got a ritual that you do before you perform? It’s all quite boring really. I just try and take care of myself. I’m getting older you know, so I have to take care of myself. With getting old you can’t take liberties. You can’t go having too much fun because it’s important to do a good show every night. You can’t be absolutely brilliant one show and then burnt out for the next three gigs - once you’re on that road it’s hard to get that back. So my ritual is to continue to keep healthy. I try to avoid colds and all that

stuff and of course warm up, but as I say I’m self-taught as a singer, all that stuff is important. You need to warm up and get the old voice going and that’s it really. It’s quite different to what it used to be in my younger days, but we won’t go into that! 50 years in the industry, that’s insane! What’s your biggest achievement in your career so far? Survival! As I say, I have a little bit of a gift for music, which is fortunate because I’m not very good at anything else. I’m absolutely useless and I dread to think how I would have kept the wolf from the door. My mum used to say “you ask him to do one job and he makes you 50 bloody more”. There’s a few trophies; I played live on The Wall in Berlin with somewhere between a quarter and half a million people watching, there’s all sorts of things like that. I don’t try and get carried away with any success or too down about things when they’re not so great. I’m just so grateful to have made a career from music; I can’t believe it when I look back. I came from nothing, I had no right to have made it where I am, but I have and I will keep going. I’m so lucky, I’ll keep going.

www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 37

Paul Carrack

What made you choose this career path? I was already playing in bands and I just knew that it was something that I wanted to do, but I had to go through the motions of pretending that I was going to get a proper job. One of the things they did at school was to take us on a day trip to the pit; they took us down the mine to see if we fancied it. I really didn’t need any more convincing, I just needed to practice a lot more musically. I wouldn’t have been any good down there, I would’ve had enough trouble picking up a shovel, let alone doing any digging. It was awful, I don’t know how people did it, I really don’t - it was pretty scary.

Icamefrom nothing, Ihadnorightto have madeitwhere I am, butIhaveand I will keepgoing So you’re a Sheffield lad, what’s your favourite thing about the city? I’ve got to own up, I haven’t lived in Sheffield for a long time, I grew up there, but in my late teens I gravitated towards London, that’s just what people did, that’s how it’d typically go. I met a London girl, we got together then eventually got married, and in fact we had our Ruby wedding this year (40 years!). We were together seven years before that too, so it’s been a while. We settled down there and then brought our kids up. With Sheffield there’s a big connection with having family here - my brother, great guy, cousins, aunties and for my sins, I’m also a Wednesday supporter - for us it’s like a 300 mile trip to see a game. I must have travelled thousands and thousands of miles in total. I really don’t know what’s going to happen to the club though, with the scary news about the Financial Fair Play malarkey - not great! So last, but not least; we’ve been having this debate in the office, where abouts in Sheffield are you from? Some think Crookes, some think Dronfield. Crookes! Why Dronfield? Who came up with that’un? Paul Carrack brings his 20/20 tour to Sheffield City Hall on 2 February. Head over to sheffieldcityhall.co.uk for ticket info.

The aim at Real Pet Grub has always been to create an environment where customers walk in as strangers and leave as friends. It’s not just another place that sells pet food. They’d like to give special thanks to every single customer they have dealt with in the past, without them the pet shop wouldn’t have that special feeling which keeps people coming back.

SUPERNATURAL

SHEFFIELD

We shine a spotlight on Team Spirit Paranormal, the group of Sheffielders who are taking on the North’s haunted locations Team Spirit Paranormal are a small group of friends who have come together to investigate the paranormal and supernatural. Founded in 2017 by Lesley Hudson, the team are based in Sheffield, and anything paranormal is their passion as Lesley explains. “We are a team of six: Myself (Lesley Hudson), Andrew Froggat, John Williams, Phil Williams, Susan Westerman and Fiona Beck. We love to investigate different types of locations, such as old pubs, inns, castle, abbey ruins, chapels and anything that has lots of history... “We have a Facebook group/page with over 3,500 followers where the team and members can share our experiences and beliefs through sending in photos, videos, EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena). We are as honest as they come! No fakery, just pure solid evidence trying to debunk anything we can along the way. 62 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

“We set up cameras, spirit boxes and are able to manipulate radio waves to 'speak'... We enjoy using the Ouija board, and automatic writing board, along with old school techniques such as dowsing rods, trigger objects, pendulums and our own senses.” Team Spirit Paranormal don’t just cover Yorkshire, they have ventured out to investigate places in Manchester, too. “My favourite location is a pub in Knutsford, the Lord Edon," Lesley tells us. It was the first investigation that we did. The place is steeped in history, it’s 400 years old! "As soon as we walked through the door, we could feel all of the energy. We felt like there was quite a few spirits in there... The landlord (a dear friend of mine) has had so

much happen in this building... I, myself, saw a shadow of a little girl which unfortunately I didn't capture on camera. We believe her name to be Emily, as when we did a spirit box session, the name Emily came through. The batteries drained real quick, brand new ones too... We are returning in the New Year, hopefully Jan/Feb...”

SUPERNATURAL SHEFFIELD

Closer to home, a regular spot is the South Yorkshire Barracks in Hillsborough. “On our second visit, I took a few snaps on my phone with no flash. After reviewing the pics, you can see a face above the door. On the third visit, we communicated with a child spirit on the Ouija board. We questioned who the child was, and the board spelt out O W E N!” Situated in the village of Bradwell near Hope Valley in Derbyshire Ye Olde Bowling Green is a classic example of an early 1500 Alehouse. As far as Lesley knows, it has always been an Inn, however a Slaughterhouse as a side line. The licence was held by the Bramall family for about 150 years. “There is a local belief that there is something strange about the inn, and previous owners have been mystified by their names being whispered during the quiet of the afternoon,” Lesley tell us. “The atmosphere is, however, very friendly and the 'intruder' is known affectionately as Fred.

“There'sno fakerywithus. Justpuresolid evidencetrying todebunk anythingwe canalong theway”

“Myself and the team were quite excited to investigate this inn after doing a brief on the history of the place. We all met up around 9pm and familiarised ourselves with this lovely location. In the middle of nowhere, surrounded by pitch black countryside, the small village looked so beautiful and peaceful lit up by the odd street lamp and the full moon. We went in the bar, bought ourselves a soft drink, and then on the first level we decided to set up our equipment. We split ourselves up doing different experiments. “Myself (Lell) and John did a brief pendulum session. I then joined Phil to do a session on the Coultous Box. Suprisingly, we all experienced good solid evidence that we were communicating with more than one spirit, both male and female spirits. It seemed like they were trying to emphasise protection to us. We had the planchette drawing board doing drawings of a few pentagrams, which was truly amazing to watch. The pendulum was answering us direct yes and no questions by moving either clockwise for yes or anticlockwise for no."

“When I joined Phil at the table doing the spirit box and electromagnetic field readings, we heard some clear stuff come through the box. To our astonishment we heard ‘bastard!’, ‘die!’, and ‘broken light bulb'. John looked up at the wall directly above us and discovered it had a broken light bulb! Just brilliant! “Not to mention a few extremely angry voices coming through the spirit box too, just like two people were arguing, a male and a female. After checking the team witch Kat’s remote view (the practice of seeking impressions about a distant person) which she had done for me previous to this investigation, she saw a male and female at loggerheads! Astounding!” You can find see more Team Spirit Paranormal investigations on their Facebook page facebook.com/teamspiritparanormalofficial or over on their YouTube channel: Team Spirit Paranormal Official teamspiritparanormalblog.wordpress.com

FOOD + DriNK

STRONG & NORTHERN

Henderson’sRelish hasannounced detailsof a brand newcook book Following the success of their 2014 cook book, this brand new offering from Henderson’s and our sister company Meze Publishing showcases the spicy Yorkshire sauce in all its glory. Strong & Northern is a reminder of what people use Henderson’s Relish for every day: splashing over and stirring into their favourite meals, whether that’s a hearty stew or Friday fish and chips. Henderson’s Relish is a Sheffield institution with fans at home and all over the world. Reflecting its international appeal and the cultural diversity of our city, this book contains a wide selection of recipes from many cuisines, including pies and pastries, family favourites, one pot meals and Northern classics. The dishes are all easily achievable for home cooks and designed to please everyone no matter their tastes and dietary requirements. There is a whole section dedicated to vegan dishes including ‘Not Fish and Chips’ alongside seitan and red wine pie, plus collections of sides and cheese dishes from mushy peas to Croque Monsieur. Caribbean pork sancocho, Yemeni chicken, Polish potato pancakes and Spanish empanadas join traditional Yorkshire favourites so there’s plenty to explore. Each recipe in the book also features someone who loves Sheffield and has served the city through their art, music, work, or community contribution. These fans of Hendo’s have shared their thoughts on the saucy institution, as well as reflections and personal connections to the various elements of its heritage and culture. What comes across is that Sheffield means something different to everyone but genuine pride and affection for the city unites all the perspectives, whether they have lived in ‘the big village’ all their life or spent a short time here that made a lasting impression.

Among those featured are England footballer Millie Bright and former world squash champion Nick Matthew – representing the city’s sporting prowess – as well as renowned artist Joe Scarborough and inaugural poet laureate Otis Mensah, leading lights of Sheffield’s thriving creative scene. Musicians, journalists, business owners, faith leaders, MPs, metal grinders and knife makers provide varied insights to the city of today. Adam Clarke, head chef at the pioneering vegan bar and eatery Make No Bones at Church, is among those singing its praises: “The main thing that kept me in Sheffield was the emerging food scene – a blank canvas that was being filled in rapidly. The city has the feel of a small village but is also a melting pot of cultures, and is such an open platform for trying different things. At the same time, there’s a strong loyalty to things like Hendo’s that I find myself sticking with too. I’ve used Hendo’s since I first came to Sheffield because it’s such an inclusive condiment that opened the door to vegan seasoning for me, and it just goes with everything.” The foreword is written by Matt Davies, the general manager at Henderson’s, encourages everyone to embrace the venerable heritage of this beloved product. “It’s all of ours. Whether you’ve just arrived, have been here for years, or have never left, there’s something about this city’s spicy sauce that is different, just right. Find Henderson’s Relish, and you’ll find a home, right here I hope you enjoy these latest Henderson’s recipes. We’re delighted to launch the new Henderson’s Relish Strong & Northern cook book, just in time for Christmas. With new recipes that are easily achievable for home cooks, there’s something for Hendo’s fans everywhere – no matter what their tastes or dietary requirements.”

Strong & Northern is a 192 page hardback and retails at £20. It will be available to purchase from Amazon, bookshops including Waterstones, local gift shops in the Sheffield area and online from mezepublishing.co.uk www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 65

The famous band is celebrating its Golden Anniversary in 2019 The first mention of a Stannington Brass Band was way back in 1881. Later, it became the Stannington Church Brass Band and after a six year break, reformed in 1968 as the Stannington Brass Band as we know it today with its first performance in February 1969 – making 2019 the Golden Anniversary year. The band retains close links with the local community and many players reside in, or close to, Stannington. However, with true Yorkshire hospitality the band actively welcomes students attending the local universities and other visitors to the area.

66 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

Proud of its roots, the band plays at local events, parades and concerts and at Christmas time has a strong following of singers and supporters at carol events in pubs and churches. The carols, many of which are unique to the area, are also still played on Christmas Day and Boxing Day around Stannington village. Competing against some of the highest ranking bands in the world for two years, the band’s promotion to the Yorkshire Championship Section in 2008 – the highest accolade in the band’s history – remains a highlight.

There were more celebrations in 2016 when the band pulled off an incredible double in the same year by scooping both Second Section Yorkshire Area and National Championship firsts and a promotion back to the First Section. Still on a high from their success at the National Brass Band Championships, the band continued their winning form by being awarded first prize in the Second Section at the Bolsover Festival of Brass where Richard Dowling was rewarded with the best soloist’s prize. They topped off their most successful contesting year with win number five at the YHBBA Annual Contest in Holmfirth where they were judged best Second Section band. Local lad Tom Hutchinson, who is now the principal cornet player of the world famous Cory band, joined the band after seeing them march through the village on Remembrance Sunday.

“I was always amazed at the brilliant sounds and dynamics the band made, and instantly became hooked! I think I’d already started cornet lessons at Nook Lane Primary School by that time and played with the school band, but they weren’t a patch on Stannington and I desperately wanted to join. “So, through lots of practice and hard work, I was finally told I’d improved enough to join the band on bottom 3rd cornet. I was given one of the band's Besson Sovereign cornets (a much better model than mine at that time) and sat bottom of the line, probably legs swinging trying keep up with all the notes! Nevertheless, I was in the band and extremely proud. Army of the Nile was always my favourite march when I watched the band on Remembrance Sunday, and I was so proud when I finally got to play this with the band, marching Stannington’s streets, people lining the roads. Every time I hear this march it brings back these memories.

“It’s difficult to put into words the influence the band had on me as a young player.” In 2016, Tom lead the Corey Band to its historic Grand Slam achievement in 2016, with the band finishing off the year as the world’s No.1 ranked brass band for a consecutive and unprecedented ten years. But the highlights for Tom are still closer to home. “A particular highlight was reaching the national finals but the concerts at Lomas Hall were always my favourite as my entire family were usually there. It’s fair to say that without Stannington Band, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. I’m so thankful to every single player, conductor, member and supporter of this great band, for encouraging and supporting a young boy chasing his dreams.” stanningtonbrassband.org.uk

CULTURE

Truthand Justice Set in the fictional South Yorkshire mining village of Silverton, at the time of the 1984/85 miners’ strike, Strike! by Spectrum Theatre takes in the events of the infamous Battle of Orgreave, the impact of that day and the bitter industrial dispute of which it was a part of. We spoke to Will Green, who plays Paul Turner in the production, about what to expect from a production that is guaranteed to hit close to home. First of all, who are Spectrum Theatre? Andy Gardiner taught drama at Freeman College in Sheffield where they teach young people between 18-25 who are on the autistic spectrum. Previous to Spectrum there was no provision at the college for students to continue performing arts after they left. Spectrum brings together adults, young and not-so young, on the autistic spectrum and others who just want to perform together in a welcoming and tolerant environment. In previous years Spectrum Theatre Sheffield has performed originally written musicals as Shoes and Sterling Silver. The musicals carry poignant themes from local history and are very relatable to the present day. On that note, what relatable themes can we expect from Strike? Firstly, the characters are the most relatable. The musical covers a fictitious area called Silverton, which is based on one of the many mining towns that exist in South Yorkshire today – albeit with ex-working mines. Our current cabinet comprises Etonian ‘elite’ who believe they understand the people. The people cannot understand why Jacob Rees-Mogg could possibly think that such a disgusting comment about those lost in the tragic Grenfell Tower fire would even enter his mind. “If you were me, and I were you, do you think I’d see the world the same as you?” is the opening line to

one of Ben Barker and Andy Gardiner’s songs which illustrates the boundaries we have to understanding one another. How can we possibly begin to understand what other people think is acceptable when we haven’t seen what they’ve seen or been where they’ve been? Atticus Finch described it as climbing into someone’s skin and walking around in it, Toni Sorenson described it as walking a mile in someone’s shoes. The miners could not understand why Thatcher treated them so harshly throughout the strikes. Thatcher could not believe how those organising the strikes could have such disregard for her authority. Tensions rose and spilled into Orgreave – one of the many pickets which incited violence. Does the musical include the Battle of Orgreave? It certainly does. Although Orgreave wasn’t the only picket that turned to violence, it was definitely one of the most brutal. Horses were used to charge into the crowds of miners who were on strike and truncheons cracked heads mercilessly. Real footage from the events of the day will be used on stage to give the audience a taste of the horrifying police brutality that was present at the ‘rout’ of Orgreave. Tell us a bit about your character, Paul Turner, and how he fits into proceedings. Paul Turner is a journalist, who returns to his hometown of Silverton to report on the strike through use of his local connections. This is for the agency he works for down in London accompanied by his colleague Jackie. A possible

unrequited love interest? Paul returns home to his widowed mother, his old schoolmates and Sharon – his old flame. Paul becomes entwined in the tensions of the strike and things get… complicated, shall we say. Why is it still important to keep the conversation going about Orgreave? South Yorkshire Police, accompanied by outside police support, behaved appallingly and put many picketers in hospital with injuries. Such behaviour was excused by Thatcher. As many as thirty-one statements from police all containing the same words were reported from that day. Some argue that South Yorkshire Police behaved in the same way at Hillsborough because they knew they could get away with it. The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign wants a public inquiry into the events of 18 June 1984. In 2016, Amber Rudd, Tory Home Secretary, declared the public inquiry not to be in the national interest and rejected this. We want to move the audience and draw their attention to the injustices that affected the livelihoods of communities which relied so heavily on the mining industry in this country. Strike! runs for three nights – December 10th, 11th & 12th of December – at The Library Theatre in Sheffield’s Tudor Square. Tickets (£10/£6) are available from the Sheffield Theatres Box Office – 0114 249 6000 or sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

Motoring

1. 2. 3. 4.

Brush off loose snow Make sure to clear all the snow from your car to make sure that it doesn’t blow off behind you as you start driving, potentially blinding a following vehicle. Clear the openings Don’t forget to brush all the snow away from the door openings, unless you want snow to fall into the car when you open it. A soft-bristled brush will do the job if you don’t have the fancy gear. Whip out the de-icer If the ice is too thick or it’s too cold to be stood there scraping, apply a good blob of de-icer over the windows and lights and let the chemicals do the job.

BEAT THE FROST 8 steps to keeping your car driveable in the cold snap...

Clear the screen Keep scraping as often as necessary until all your windows are free of snow and ice. It’s dangerous to drive just using a small bit of your window and leaving the rest frosted up. Don’t forget to clear the door mirrors so you can see what’s behind you.

5.

No de-icer, no problem If you don’t have any de-icer to hand, then tepid water will do the trick in an emergency. You’ll just need to dry your windscreen to stop the water freezing again as you drive away. Don’t use hot or boiling water as it will crack the glass.

6. 7. 8.

Screenwash You could use neat screenwash if you’ve got some to hand. Try not to splash too much on the bodywork in case it stains. De-icing the locks A squirt of alcohol-based hand cleansing gel on the key will do a pretty decent job of breaking through the ice, as will vodka or any other spirit. Don’t pour water inside the lock… De-icing the doors Spray de-icer around the door seal and pull gently. Keep spraying and pulling and the door should eventually open as the de-icer does its job.

Driving in snow Snow isn’t normally the issue when it comes to driving in the elements; it’s more difficult when the snow turns to ice after being driven on. Try not to follow in other driver’s tracks and the grip should be fine. In any case, you’ll need to use a higher gear than usual to minimise wheel spin. All your steering, throttle, and brakes should be as gentle as possible. Steady momentum will keep you mobile in situations where grip is at a premium.
