WELCOME #3 SEP 19

A Word From Us

Russell Howard

Nice lad, that Russell Howard. He’s been popping up on the telly for a good few years now. We managed to grab him for an interview ahead of his Fly DSA Arena show later in the month. What was initially meant to be a quick 10 minute chat turned into a proper 40 minute natter as the loveable Bristolian put the world to rights with our writer Robyn Hewson. Scoot on over to page 40 for the full interview. There are a few tickets left for the show on 28 September (buy here: flydsaarena.co.uk) or head over to our Facebook page facebook.com/NorthBoundMag and enter our competition for two free tickets. Elsewhere, we spoke to Kate from the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign as they gear up for an evening of poetry, arts and talks with Heritage Open Days at Sheffield City Hall. It’s been 35 years since the Miner’s Strike, and many people are still seeking justice for events on 18 June 1984. Let’s hope the families and communities will eventually get the justice they deserve. We’ve all the regular features in the magazine too. Whether it’s your wardrobe, home or garden that needs a spruce up this September, we’ve got some top quality options in here for you. That’s all from me. As usual, any feedback is much appreciated. Fire us an email or give us a bell for a chin wag, yeah? Paul Stimpson Editor

A walkin the park 13 Green Flags have been awarded to parks in Sheffield from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy

Sheffield’s parks and green spaces have been recognised by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, with 13 Green Flags awarded to parks across the city, including North Sheffield’s Firth Park. The winning parks, green spaces and woodlands have been recognised for their environmental character, maintenance and visitor experience. Sheffield’s award winning parks are the Botanical Gardens, Cholera Grounds and Clay Wood, Devonshire Green, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Park, Meersbrook Park, Millhouses Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Peace Gardens, Weston Park, Wheata Woods, Winter Gardens and Tinsley Green. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield city council, said: “I believe we have some of the best parks, green spaces and woodlands in

the country so I’m delighted that they’ve been recognised once again. These awards are testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of the many staff, friends’ groups and volunteers who work tirelessly to uphold the high standards we have come to expect. “Our parks play an essential role within our communities, not only providing excellent outdoor leisure and play facilities but also contributing to the improved health and wellbeing of Sheffielders. Whether that’s through running, cycling, gardening, being part of a Friends Group, climbing on playgrounds or a simple stroll, these outdoor spaces offer so many ways to be physically active and mentally stimulated. “It’s no secret that we are managing our parks through extremely challenging times, so it’s fantastic to see them continuing to flourish and get the recognition they deserve.”

Countdown to the

Blitz

Atkinsons’ war legacy is commemorated in Blitz countdown

A Tommy statue has been educating Sheffield shoppers on the history of the city centre’s last surviving independent department store. The Moor’s Atkinsons – which originally opened in 1872 – survived both World Wars, but only just. The store was completely flattened in World War Two after it received a direct hit in the Sheffield Blitz of December 1940. A Tommy silhouette statue presently stands on its first floor as part of the ‘There But Not There’ campaign to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers.

It was installed as part of the Invictus Team UK Trails which have just taken place in the city. Atkinsons is set to be a key point on the Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail which is to be launched across the city centre on the anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz attacks in December. The store will soon be fitted with an interpretation plaque which will tell its unique story as part of the German attacks that changed the face of the city in December 1940. Atkinsons will also be selling copies of ‘Countdown To The Sheffield Blitz’ – the brand new book about the attacks. The Sheffield Blitz 75th project is set to officially launch the trail on the anniversary of the attacks on December 12 in Atkinsons. David Cartwright, Atkinsons store manager, said: “We were only too glad to have a Tommy installed. Our own history has been tragically touched by the events of both world wars. It is essential that we commemorate and remember those that lost their lives.” atkinsonsofsheffield.co.uk

Legend of the West

The home of Tramlines, Farmers Blonde and some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery, there’s more to North Sheffield than meets the eye. Have you got an interesting historical fact that NorthBound readers need to know? Email paul@ northboundmagazine.co.uk

Legendary sharpshooter William Cody, best known as Buffalo Bill, a nickname he earned for reportedly killing 4,282 buffalo. After serving during the American Civil war, he toured a western show which brought the American frontier to countries across Europe. Bill visited many places on his global tours and performed in front of some distinguished faces including Queen Victoria and the Pope, but he also paid a visit to our fair city in 1903 transforming Sheffield from the mild North into the Wild West. He brought with him a 200-strong troupe of cowboys and Native Americans and 180 horses who performed in front of sold-out audiences. Reportedly Buffalo Bill carved his name into a tree in Wharncliffe Side by blasting it with his revolver. His short stay in Sheffield proved rather eventful though. A member of the show lost a leg when a horse fell on him whilst practicing and was rushed to Sheffield Infirmary but later died of lockjaw while in hospital.

An

Absolutely Fabulous Opening

Joanna Lumley OBE will be opening the new Sandersons Spa

North Sheffield’s Fox Valley shopping centre will welcome back the celebrity guest Joanna Lumley OBE this month to mark the official opening of a unique new wellness spa and organics range at the centre. The team behind Sandersons department store at Fox Valley have spent the last three months creating a stunning new organics area and wellness spa in the store – offering a fabulous and unique range of vegan and organic products and treatments. The new Sandersons Spa will be officially opened on 18 September by Joanna Lumley. The launch marks a return visit to Fox Valley for the Absolutely Fabulous star who officially opened the award-winning shopping centre in June 2016.

The new Sandersons Spa brings a range of new products to the region, including vegan and organic treatments as well as specialist treatments which are suitable for cancer patients. Two beautifully designed treatment rooms as well as a relaxing and calm, lounge-style seating area have been created – with a reception area and access from the ground floor of the main store. Both the spa and the Sandersons organics concept have been created to build on the lasting legacy of the store’s founder Deborah Holmes, who passed away in January this year. Deborah was passionate about the importance of the ingredients used in skincare and beauty products as well as appreciating complimentary and alternative therapies.

Deborah’s husband, Mark Dransfield, now heads up the store and has been the driving force behind creating the new Organics and Spa area. “We have really set out to create something special with the Sandersons Spa with a focus on the highest quality products and providing vegan and natural treatments,” said Mark. “Debs was so passionate about the products we use on our skin and that’s something we really wanted to focus on at Sandersons with the choice of brands we’re working with. We are delighted that Joanna is going to be returning to Fox Valley for the Sandersons Spa opening and to see the vision that Debs had for the store come to fruition.” Customers can now book treatments for the Spa through the Sandersons website on sandersonsdeptstore.co.uk

Sheffield Royalty Plaqueunveiled forfounder of UK’sfirstfree hospital Last month a plaque was unveiled on Watson’s Walk in the city centre to honour Sheffield-born William Marsden - the founder of the first free hospital and cancer ward in the city of London. Born in Sheffield in 1796, Marsden received his education as an apprentice to an apothecary and shortly thereafter was accepted into St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, qualifying as a surgeon in 1827 and receiving his doctorate the following year. Marsden’s charitable endeavours began not long afterward, after learning of the difficulties experienced by the poor in accessing medical care he sought

to establish a free hospital where ‘poverty and sickness were the only passports’. Marsden secured a dispensary in Hatton Garden in Holborn and named it the London General Institution for the Gratuitous Cure for Malignant Diseases, which was later reconstituted as the Royal Free Hospital in 1840. He turned his attention to cancer sufferers in 1851 and would open a similar institute in 1851 in Cannon Row, Westminster which has since been renamed The Royal Marsden Hospital.

A bronze plaque was initially placed on the Walk and remained for several years but was sadly stolen shortly before 2009. A mark would remain on the wall, but this year the Aesculpian Society of Sheffield, working with the Sheffield city council, made enquiries into replacing it with an official blue plaque to mark the work of one of Sheffield’s most important sons. Marsden’s efforts pre-empted the formation of the modern NHS by a century, and saved the lives of hundreds of poverty stricken people by providing their treatment completely free of charge. royalmarsden.nhs.uk

Ambitious Old Town Hall Plans Thenewowner AestromOTH hasreleased its masterplanfor theGradeII-listed Castlegate building After years of neglect, the Old Town Hall in Castlegate could finally be re-imagined after plans were submitted for the Grade II-listed to be renovated into apartments, a hotel and a marketplace on the ground floor. The former cell block rooms at the Old Town Hall would be converted into 12 ‘pod’ hotel rooms and the upper floors would be converted into apartments with access to communal roof terraces. The proposed plans for the ‘souk’ – traditionally a Middle-Eastern and North African marketplace – would involve knocking in the walls of the lower floors, but not before urgent repairs are made to the building.

Charles Dunn, associate at Urbana Town Planning, which drew up the plans on behalf of the new owners Aestrom OTH, said: “We are delighted to have submitted this planning application on behalf of our client Aestrom OTH. The Old Town Hall is one of Sheffield city centre’s most important heritage buildings and everyone involved in this project understands that we have a responsibility to take care of this much-loved asset and reverse its recent decline. “The plan for the building is to create 12 high quality serviced apartments on the upper floors, with a boutique

16 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

marketplace of characterful commercial spaces at the ground and lower ground floor, which could be used as cafés, bars, shops or work spaces. The former cells will be converted to create 12 pod hotel rooms, which, when open, will surely provide one of the most unique places to stay in the city centre.”

THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE Words: Paul stimpson

28 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

35 years on from the Miner’s Strike, the struggle for Orgreave justice continues.

orgreave

In March of 1984, the National Coal Board announced it would be closing 20 of its pits, leaving more than 20,000 people unemployed. Almost 200,000 miners launched industrial action around the country, marking the beginning of the Miner’s Strike to defend their jobs and communities. Arthur Scargill, the president of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at the time, had foreseen this in 1983 when he said: “The policies of this government are clear – to destroy the coal industry and the NUM.” The relationship between the government and the NUM was already hostile by the 1980s, partly due to the strikes of 1972 where Arthur played a key role in the Battle of Saltley Gate in 1972, which saw at least 15,000 Birmingham engineers walk out to support a picket by striking miners.

I walked in thatfield and I wasnearly carried out. - StefWysocki Using a similar tactic to Saltley Gate, the NUM called for a mass picket of the Orgreave coking plant, which regularly supplied coke to the Scunthorpe plant. Nearly 10,000 miners showed up on 18 June to picket lorries asking the drivers not to transport the coke. Throughout the strike the police had a practice of blocking access routes and turning miners away from picketing. On this occasion, the police guided the miners to a specific area. It was suspicious, according to the Orgreave Trust and Justice Campaign’s secretary Kate Flannery. “Thousands of police turned up and ushered the miners into the field at Orgreave – one of the miners arrested that day told us that they did everything but valet their cars! They gave them parking spaces but before they knew it, the police set upon them with dogs and horses.” Speaking to the BBC in 2015, Stef Wysocki, a miner who was at Orgreave on the day, details the moment. “It were a nice summer’s day. We were there in t-shirts and they were there in full riot gear. They knew what was going off. I was punched, kicked, prodded – you name it. I walked in that field and I was nearly carried out.”

Following the violent scenes, The Sun reported and praised “an amazing cavalry charge” and the previous month, attempted to publish a front page cover comparing Arthur Scargill to Adolf Hitler. Union members at the printers refused to print it, instead choosing to send a message to editor Kelvin McKenzie. “Members of all The Sun production chapels refused to handle the Arthur Scargill picture and major headline on our lead story. The Sun has decided, reluctantly, to print the paper without either.” On 15 April 1989, the Hillsborough disaster took place and claimed 96 lives of Liverpool supporters. After the findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel in 2012, the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign was founded. “We set the campaign up at the end of 2012 in response to the outcome of the independent Hillsborough panel,” Kate tells us. “We thought after that that it was the right time to do it. An inquiry had been tried by various trade unionists and politicians previously, so we were building upon something that had already been attempted.

“For years and years there has been a burning injustice about why innocent people who were trying to fight for their jobs and communities were set upon in what seemed to be a planned attempt to physically harm them. Not only that but once the police attacked them, they arrested them on some spurious charges such as rioting, which could have meant a life prison sentence.” Kate and the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign were optimistic after the home secretary at the time Theresa May made some positive remarks about looking into Orgreave following the findings of the Hillsborough inquiry.

“We met with Amber Rudd after she took over from May (who became prime minister in 2016) and we were hopeful that the government were going to take us seriously.” In October of 2016, Amber Rudd decided against holding a public inquiry into the events at Orgreave because of a lack of a miscarriage of justice, the fact that nobody died and reportedly, without even looking at any evidence. “Since when has lack of death been a reason not to have an investigation? There are some miners now who were so brutally attacked that they can’t talk about it now. And when they do they cry. Lives were torn apart, it was horrendous.”

“The violenceand intimidation wehave seenshould never have happened. It isthework of extremists. It istheenemy within.” -Margaret Thatcher

More than 35 years following the events at Orgreave, the Orgreave Justice Campaign and Heritage Open Day have organised an event on 18 September which highlights some instrumental and influential moments in social history – including the Peterloo massacre of 1819 where a crowd of 70,000 protesters were charged at. “We’ve always been keen to not make this too depressing. If you think about all of the injustices, it can be very demoralising and distressing. We’ve had rallies, demonstrations, stuns – we had an event outside the Home Office where we took a cardboard cutout of Margaret Thatcher to present to Amber Rudd to remind her of her predecessors! “On the night, we’ve got various people appearing who were involved in the strike. Actors, poets, musicians and a full evening of political discussion – hopefully some of it light hearted. The second half of the show we’ve got some readings from a Barry Hines play from the Sheffield University’s Hines archive. It’s called ‘After The Strike’ - a play written for the BBC which they decided not to to screen.”

Kate, a resident of Sheffield, was involved in Women Against Pit Closures in 198485 as a young woman. “I worked in local government and my union were supporting the miners. My family were Sheffield people, they worked in steel and coal and were very politically active at the time and understood the importance of fighting for the miners. We were very aware of the lies the government were spinning at the time about pit closures. “We knew what destruction the closures would cause not only for the mining community but for the country. Orgreave was quite symbolic actually because it wasn’t the only incident happening at the time – there were Orgreaves happening all over the country but it was the pre-planned aspect of it which made it quite significant.” With a Conservative government currently in chaos amid the impending exit of Britain from the European Union, the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign are determined to continue with their campaign. “We do have hope that the truth will come out, but we have a serious problem with this government and the current home secretary – a woman who believes in the death penalty! We’re hoping that a general election will give us a Labour government who can sort out these injustices because it’s not just Orgreave, there are many other injustices going on and it’s in their manifesto to have an Orgreave inquiry.”

‘From Peterloo to Orgreave – 200 years of People Power’ will be hosted by the Orgreave Campaign’s Joe Rollin and Chris Peace and will feature music from Christan Reilly, Sam Browse and The Fates, as well as an ‘On the Sofa’ style discussion chaired by comedian John Scott, with leading Hillsborough Inquest barrister Mark George QC, actor Kate Rutter of ‘Peterloo’ and ‘I, Daniel Blake’, Dr Matt Roberts from Sheffield Hallam University, councillor Sophie Wilson from the Sheffield city council, our interviewee Kate Flannery and Ray Goodspeed from Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, the group famously depicted in the film ‘Pride’. Tickets for the event are free and are available online at sheffieldcityhall. co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall box office. A Period Of Respite Words: Robyn Hewson

40 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

russell howard

The much-loved Bristol-born comic Russell Howard and NorthBound writer Robyn Hewson put the world to rights ahead of his show at the Fly DSA Arena this month

Russell Howard first shot to fame as a panellist on Mock the Week, a show where comedians must give their views on a series of news stories from the past week. This acted as a precursor to his own show on BBC Three, the hugely popular and award-winning ‘Russell Howard’s Good News’ where he would poke fun at the endless negative stories in the press. Howard isn’t one to shy away from controversial topics, giving his opinion on politics, gun control and sexism but he also manages to keep the audience laughing with his satirical take on the state of the world. In 2016, he started filming ‘Russell Howard & Mum’ for Comedy Central where he and his mum, Ninette, would take on a host of weird and wonderful activities around the world from sumo wrestling in Japan to DJing at a party in Thailand. More recently, he’s been performing new material at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in preparation for his upcoming UK tour, Respite. We caught up with Russ to talk about his mad family, his favourite comedians and why he loves performing in Sheffield.

Your upcoming tour is called Respite, where did the name come from and what can audiences expect? I’ve been watching the news solidly for about 15 years now, and it’s got more and more bleak and banal. Respite was a word that just seemed to sum up how everyone is feeling about existence at the minute. If there was a ‘Hotel Respite’ and you could go in there and charge yourself up to 100 like a phone charger, people would absolutely do that! That was it really, to try and write a show that would be really funny. And then the news wanders in and you start joking about that there’s a lot to take the piss out of in the news at the moment.

You’ve recently been at the Edinburgh Fringe testing out new material – will some of the new jokes make it into your Respite tour?

Yeah, bits and pieces! I’ve done it for the last three years now where I perform at a really small venue in Edinburgh and just try out new jokes. A few of my mates are musicians and I’m so envious of them. The audience love to hear their old stuff whereas if you’re a comic, people just want to hear new stuff all the time. I was quite clever this year because all the proceeds went to a knife crime charity ‘The Kiyan Prince Foundation’ so even if the new material didn’t work, we were still raising money and saving lives. Lots of the stuff worked, some of it didn’t but that’s just the way it goes with comedy really. You have to create it with rather than for people, it’s a fascinating science.

So the audience is an important part of your creative process as a comedian?

Audiences that are really up for it and have a great energy may never know how important they are; that they’ve helped write all these brilliant jokes. That’s what’s great about Edinburgh, you probably have 14 gigs and you do 12 of them that are fantastic. There’s a great energy in the room and you throw out an idea and they laugh and then you can pursue that idea further. Then you have two audiences where it’s like trying to play rave music to a turtle and it’s just not gonna happen! The funny thing is, they’ve probably had a really good time, but as a comic you’re going: “God that turtle didn’t move once! I’ve played Josh Wink, I’ve played ‘Firestarter’…” The point I’m making is actually, there is no science to it, you can’t just make it in a vacuum, it has to be done with people. You have to perform, perform, perform and then you sort of figure it out, and then it’s ready for the tour.

What are your favourite places to perform?

I always used to love doing Sheffield when I was a kid; there were gigs at the Lescar that I used to do quite a lot with Toby Foster. He would say: “I’ve got fuck all!”, then go on and do 40 minutes of brilliant improv and I used to love that, it was one of the first gigs that I used to do. Obviously I love Bristol as well because it just feels like performing in front of my family. It seems like you have a really good relationship with your family, you and your mum filmed a travel series together and they feature in a lot of jokes when you’re doing stand-up! What I love when I talk about my family is that people either laugh along with it because they have a similarly mad family or they laugh because they can’t imagine having a family that mad. When people saw me and my mum on the travel show, they were either going: “My mum’s just like that!” or “Christ, how did you do that with your mum?!” It was never something we planned, they offered me the option to take my mum and we accidentally made this really funny show.

“itwas this bizarre situationwhere Iwasonadate witha Japanese businesswoman whilemy mum and mywifewatched. Itwaslikethe worstepisodeof TakeMeOut you’ve everseen.”

What was the best place that you visited on the show? Japan was really great. It’s so far removed from life in England. Nobody speaks English, we couldn’t read any of the signs - it was totally different. We went to this hostess club where rich businesswomen get entertained by these men who look like boyband members and they are waited on hand and foot for the entire evening. For one of the episodes, I had to woo this middle aged lady and it was a fucking disaster! My mum was watching and giving me tips. To make it even weirder, my wife was with us, so it was this bizarre situation where I was on a date with a Japanese businesswoman while my mum and my wife watched. It was like the worst episode of Take Me Out you’ve ever seen.

www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 43

russell howard

I love that about the show that you get up to the most weird and wonderful things and your mum is always up for anything – even doing a DJ set at a party in Thailand!

Yeah it was wonderful and she rocked it! She was wearing this insane gold outfit, I don’t know where she got that from, we were in Koh Phangan and there weren’t many shops around selling bright gold velour tops. We were filming it until 5am and she was there all night, it was great. The crowd loved her too, my mum has a daftness to her but also a real kindness - I’m really lucky to have been raised by her. I think in my best moments I’m like my mum, and in my worst moments I’m like my dad. I think that positivity and kindness is something we can see in your shows too. How do you stay positive and keep the audience laughing when you’re talking about news stories and current affairs which are overwhelmingly negative? I’m not really that positive but I still find things really funny and I think that’s the only way to dissect things, especially on the big topics. There’s always humour because the news today is just a conveyor belt of idiocy and social media as well. I’ve become slightly obsessed with influencers and the rise of YouTubers and I find that side to the world so fascinating. They’re such huge stars to young kids and they’re just selling them stuff they don’t need.

If I was a 14 year old boy, I would probably be buying stuff to give me a six-pack from some bloke I’d seen on telly as well. I saw something the other day called ‘My Sweet V’ and it’s basically tablets you take that makes your vagina taste nicer and that’s solely aimed at scared 13 year old girls who think that they need these to attract the boys. They’ve found a way to monetise teenage insecurity, without a lot of adults actually knowing. I’m not that positive but what I am is angry! A grown woman trying to flog magic fanny tablets to teenage girls - that really boils my blood. There’s also a lot of comedy in it!

44 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

“Agrownwoman trying to flog magicfanny tablets to teenagegirlsthatreally boilsmy blood.” You’ve been doing stand up and comedy TV shows for over a decade. Has your comedy style changed over the years? I would say my new stuff is more edgy than anything I’ve done before. On the last tour, I talked about how one in four young women were self-harming. It really upset me because it was something I had no idea about and I was trying to figure out why it was. So I had a 15 minute routine about that, which was really funny, but also full of heart. Ordinarily what happens when you get in a big arena, you smooth your set out and start talking about safe topics like holiday or the differences between men and women - I’ve sort of done it the wrong way around! But it works; audiences really connect with this sort of stuff, things that aren’t normally discussed.

And I suppose that’s the nice thing about having your own show, you can decide what direction it’s going in and get messages out about things that aren’t normally discussed in comedy. Yeah, I have a big routine about knife crime and the way that the government are dealing with it which is really funny but it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be. In London, it’s something you hear every day in the news and it’s an awful situation but some of the suggestions from the government on how to handle it are just hilarious. It’s like Trump tweeting after the mass shootings saying it’s all down to video games. The politicians are so out of touch with the people. You have people like Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson speaking on behalf of a guy in Blackpool. If Jacob Rees Mogg went into a pub in Blackpool five years ago, they’d have thrown him on the fire! They would’ve thought he was a ghost. So the fact he now speaks on their behalf is so interesting.

You’ve spoken to lots of different people on the Russell Howard Hour who have given their opinions about the current state of the world, politicians included. Who has been the most interesting guest that you had on the show who has changed your perspective on something? Probably Rob Delaney. His two year old son died of a brain tumour and we were talking about grief. I said the problem is we never want to talk about the person you’ve lost because we don’t want to burden you with the pain. He said: “It’s not a burden because we’re always thinking about them, so just ask”. I thought it was a very elegant, poignant point. I know myself when I’ve lost somebody I try and ignore it; I don’t want to bring it up. It was refreshing to hear a guy who had lost somebody say “just ask” because they would quite like to talk about it in a matter-of-fact, every day way. It really meant a hell of a lot to people. Rob and I were inundated with tweets and emails. It was all Rob, he came on the show and spoke for 15 minutes about his son and it was really captivating.

“IfJacob Rees-Mogg wentinto apubin Blackpool fiveyears ago, they’d havethrown himonthe fire! They would’ve thoughthe wasaghost.”

Who are some other comics that you really enjoy? I did an interview years ago with Jess Thom, who’s a really funny comedian with Tourette’s. A lot of people think Tourette’s is just swearing but it actually involves a whole host of different tics and she spoke about it in a really interesting and funny way. Before that, there hadn’t been anyone on TV talking about Tourette’s other than the stereotype of someone shouting out “c*nt” randomly. Whereas with Jess Thom, she was joking about her tics, she owned the laughter and made it empowering. At the Edinburgh Fringe this year, I was taken aback by people not making those sorts of self-deprecating jokes anymore. Comedians are going for applause rather than laughter. I was speaking to Michelle Wolf (American comedian and TV presenter) recently who said: “It’s really easy to make people clap but it’s really hard to make people laugh.” Laughter is vital, and when you’re truly laughing, you’re kind of lost in laughter, and it’s just the best feeling! Long may it continue!

WALK WITH US With the Peak District literally on our doorstep, it would be remiss of us to not take advantage of the utterly beautiful walking routes dotted around. So strap on your walking boots and take a walk with us down to Damflask Reservoir.

On the edge of the Peak District, sandwiched between Loxley and Low Bradfield, lies Damflask reservoir. Linked to the nearby Strines, Agden and Dale Dike reservoirs, it was constructed to supply fresh water to the city of Sheffield back in 1896. The name is taken from the village that was washed away in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. Damflask Village stood near the site of the current dam wall and had a boozer, corn mill, paper mill, wire mill, blacksmith’s shop and a small amount of houses. Following the flood, the village was never rebuilt and the reservoir was built instead. Whether you’re local to Loxley or Bradfield, or just fancy a hike/drive up to the reservoir, there’s plen-

ty to do once you arrive. The two universities’ rowing clubs are based on the site, alongside the Sheffield Viking Sailing Club whose members, if you’re lucky, you can catch nipping across the water. The woodlands surrounding the reservoir have always been popular with walkers, especially since the owners of the site, Yorkshire Water, opened the site fully to the public in 2002 and revamped their walking paths to be more accessible.

BEER REVERE The Grenoside Beer Festival returns for a second year Following the huge success of last year’s event, the Grenoside Beer Festival is back for another round this month. Taking place at the Grenoside Community Centre in a specially created marquee on 14 September, the festival will have a bar stocked full of beers from local breweries alongside a few brand new, freshly-brewed ales to sup on. It’s not just ale that’s on offer though, with a bar well stocked with prosecco, gin, vodka, whisky and wine for those who want something a touch stronger during the day. The festival will also be bringing a variety of local vendors to the centre to provide a tasty line-up of street food, burgers and other delectable delights. Kids are of course welcome and will be admitted for free with paying adults. Entertainment-wise, the huge marquee in the centre’s car park will be decked out in party décor, lanterns and a stage set for a mixture of local bands and talent artists from further afield. The festival takes place at the rear of Grenoside Community Centre (same location as the Greno Gala) in the marquee (you can’t miss it!) from 2pm right the way through to 11pm. Tickets are available now for £6.50. facebook.com/grenosidebeerfestival // Grenoside Community Centre, Main Street, Grenoside, S35 8PR

Cheers to the Lost Wadsley Bridge’s Lost Industry Brewery are set to open a bar on the site of the old Niche nightclub in the city centre. Based in Nutwood Trading Estate on the outskirts of Wadsley Bridge, Lost Industry Brewery has quietly been brewing some of the best beers in the business. Business is very good, in fact, since the brewery is branching out to open a taproom down on Sidney Street in the centre of Sheffield, home to creative businesses like Jawing, HR Media and the ever-impressive Birdhouse Tea Company, in an old unit in the Niche building, where the infamous nightclub of the same name used to stand. The brewery’s taproom will have more than 20 lines of ale, all dedicated to the huge range that Lost Industry brew in Wadsley Bridge alongside picks from local and independent breweries. We grabbed owner Lesley Seaton to get the skinny… The new place will have 21 lines of beer when you open, what can we expect on the list? We will be selling a wide range of beers – a whole bunch of our own beers from Lost Industry, although this will depend on what we have at the time because we’re only a small brewery. There will be a range of stouts, pale ales, IPAs – every type of beer really! We produce so many 62 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

different beers and we’ll be stocking all of them. We’ll also have a lager line, which will only be craft lager. None of the big boys! Will all of the beers you sell be brewed by Lost Industry? It will be a 50/50 split. The other proportion will be from small and independent breweries, we won’t be selling any beer from mainstream corporations. We support proper craft beer! For those who don’t know, what is Lost Industry? We are a young company, only four years old. We are based at Wadsley Bridge and are only a small five barrel brewery. The team at the brewery is made up of me (Lesley), Jim Seaton, Helen Seaton and Nat Seaton, who handles a lot of the social media side of the business. We are proud to say that we sell beer all over the UK and even in Europe – We regularly do business with a bar in Madrid! Our mobile bar, selling a range of our beers, can

also be found at festivals throughout the year. We very much enjoy going out and meeting people, it is great to spread the word and collab with different people! Word on the grapevine is that you will be serving pizzas freshly made on the site? We haven’t finalised the menus yet, but there will definitely be a range of pizzas. We are considering the possibility of doing customised pizzas, so there will be different toppings available and plenty of options for vegans/vegetarians. Nothing is set in stone yet. But we are certain that there will be pizzas, paninis and platters on the menu. How did you come to acquire the building? We had been looking for a bar space with our partner, Darren Filsell (below left), for a while before we came across this place. Once we went into business together we began looking seriously for a venue. We wanted to be based in

Sheffield, because this is Lost Industry’s hometown. We looked at several places but they never really worked out. We then found this space in the city centre and loved it – a lot of this is to do with the shape of the building and the area that it’s in. The area is very up-andcoming, and it isn’t far from the Rutland Arms which is one of our favourite pubs. We think it will become part of a really nice circuit alongside all the other bars that are around. What sort of vibe are you going for? We are aiming to have an industrial atmosphere. We have left everything fairly bare in the building, and will then include things like scaffolding boards, window shelves and high seats. We also have a local artist doing some wonderful artwork that will be on display. The look we are trying to achieve is quite eclectic, with random décor instead of lots of matching chairs. We are also going to create a nice outdoor space, but because of the central location it will mean that we have to move it all inside at night. But we are hoping to have a couple of tables at the side of the building and some bistro-esque tables at the front. The building was a completely empty shell, so we have had a big job on our hands building everything from scratch. We are really excited to open to the Sheffield public in September! lostindustrybrewing.com www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 63

Love George

Words: PAUL STIMPSON

Inthemonth of what would have been George Cunningham’s 95th birthday, the artcommunity is coming together tocelebrate one ofSheffield’s most recognisable artists. www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 67

On the weekend of 7 –8 September, an event in the Botanical Gardens will celebrate two of Sheffield’s most-loved artists. Amongst many others, the works of George Cunningham and last month’s cover star Joe Scarborough will be on display at Art in the Gardens – an event taking place just a few minutes’ walk away from where the former grew up. It’ll be a few days shy of what would have been George’s 95th birthday, an artist and painter so influential and revered around the UK, celebrations of his work have become common place both during his formative years and since he passed in 1996. “When George kind of got in there first along with Lowry in Manchester,” Steve, a close friend of George, told us. “A lot of people were influenced and inspired by him. Bill Kirby, Terry Gorman – people like that were heavily influenced by George.” Steve Earnshaw worked with George at a workshop on Rockingham Street, where George painted and Steve framed his work, to then be put out by the Hibbert Brothers – then a well-established art gallery in Sheffield. It was during these years that Steve got to know George. “He had his little studio on Rockingham Street in the city centre and I used to frame all of his works as he knocked them out, as it were. That’s how I got to know him. He was a lovely, gentle man.”

“He enjoyed life. He loved his walking, the outdoors and loved storytelling – he could tell a great story or two. I used to have a cup of tea or coffee with him in the morning and listen to his weekend antics! Where he’d been and what he’d been sketching. But yeah a lovely, gentle guy – he was great to know and great to be with.” This exhibition, set to be a world-first for some of the George Cunningham works on show, is an excellent opportunity to see some of his famous pieces in the flesh alongside one or two familiar faces. Ian Turner, the curator of the Art in the Gardens event, said of the event: “We have a fantastic range of artists at the show, from seasoned professionals at the peak of their crafts, through to amateurs and beginner artists selling work for the very first

time at the show! So it is with great excitement that we welcome Joe Scarborough back to Art in the Gardens alongside work of the equally famous George Cunningham! “We were very privileged for Joe Scarborough to open the very first Art in the Gardens back in 2004. It is wonderful that Joe will be with us at the show, and an excellent opportunity for our visitors to invest in a Joe Scarborough or George Cunningham piece of art.” It begs the question, what would George make of having his work exhibited to hundreds of people all these years later? “He’d be chuffed to bits for this exhibi-

tion,” Steve explains. “He’d take it in his stride. His works were very sought-after when he was alive, but he would love it and be level-headed about it.” Despite his work becoming so popular, notably his Church Street painting which shifted 250 prints over Christmas one year, he always remained modest. His gentle and humble personality perhaps traces back to the humble beginnings of his childhood, where he grew up in Broomhall and went to St. Silas C of E School. Writing in his book By George in 1987, George wrote: “In spite of all his efforts, my father came home in the late winter evenings tired and wet with very little money to put on the table. The fire in the grate grew smaller, so that we had to huddle near to it for warmth and a penny for the gas was hoarded until the last flickering minute.” Asking Steve if he had any fond memories of his time spent with George, he elects to choose a general feeling of pride that his friend “made it” with his art. “He was just happy and enjoyed life; he was great to be with. I think it would have been him making it in the art world. That would have been a great feeling for George and for everyone really. The popularity he created was phenomenal, the exhibitions he had – people would be queueing and fighting over the original paintings. “To answer your question though, probably the fact he made it.” And make it indeed he did!

Art in the Gardens takes place between 7-8 September in the Botanical Gardens, a stone’s throw from where George grew up. For information on tickets, head to artinthegardens.com www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 69

Regeneration Sheffield Anewbookdocuments industrial Sheffield inthe late 1980s In 1988, Untitled Gallery launched a photographic project in Sheffield called ‘Regeneration’. This was an extensive three-year project which involved several photographic commissions to document the significant changes that were taking place in the city at that time. London-born Berris Conolly was awarded one of the first commissions and decided to focus primarily on the industrial heartland of the Lower Don Valley area, which had become a scene of partially cleared brownfield sites and ongoing demolition in this period. A native of the capital, Berris was particularly taken by the ‘eerie quiet’ of the Don Valley landscape and of the lack of traffic in the city centre, a marked contrast to the hustle and bustle of the capital.

72 | www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk

The project culminated in 1991 with a major exhibition, timed to coincide with the staging of the World Student Games in Sheffield, and which featured the work of all the photographers. It was shown in several galleries across the city. A retrospective show of the work is now scheduled for exhibition at Weston Park Museum in 2020. A number of the photographs set to be featured in that exhibition have been released in a book entitled ‘Sheffield Photographs 1988-1992’ which is available from berrisconolly.com now. Berris Connolly still lives in Sheffield and continues to photograph his South Yorkshire surroundings, with his latest project ‘One Mile’ currently underway. The collection will be a profile of the area within one mile of his home.

Shot Of The Month

Dale Dike

Sunset at Dale Dike reservoir with Boot’s Folly in the background. Snapped by Ross Foden (@RossFoden91 on Instagram), the Folly was constructed in 1927 by Charles Boot who, according to legend, built the tower so he could see High Bradfield churchyard where his wife, who died in 1926 at the age of 56, was buried. The interior is empty. There was a spiral staircase to the top, but this was removed some years ago after a cow climbed the stairs and became stuck. Poor fella. A snapper yourself? Send your Shot of the Month overto paul@northboundmagazine.co.uk and you might just be next month’s featured photographer! www.NorthBoundmagazine.co.uk | 75

SPYKIDS ŠKODA’s geofencing tech gives parents greater control when car-sharing with children Over half of 17-24 year olds rely on their parents financially to keep them driving once they’ve passed their test and carsharing can be a cost-effective solution. The ŠKODA Connect app features a geofencing service that enables parents to set an area on a map that they want their children to stay within when they borrow the car. Ideal for when the parents are on holiday this summer and don’t want their offspring at home racking up the miles driving up and down the country. It works in one of two ways; users can set a green area on the map in which the car is allowed to move freely. The car owner will be notified via the app on their smartphone if the car moves outside this area. This means young ones can no longer give a vague description of their planned journey, such as ‘just popping to the shops’. Similarly, parents can identify a red area in which they don’t want the car driven at all.

What’s more, the geofencing function can be tailored to be active only on set days and times, in order to stop arguments over who is meant to have the car on certain days. The app enables multiple areas to be monitored and parents can have up to four area notifications active at the same time. The ŠKODA Connect app enables drivers to access a host of information about the status of their car instantly. Car owners can check features ranging from fuel levels and driving data to whether or not the car is locked or pinpointing its exact position in a busy car park. With the Trip Planner function, you need never be late again – the app will check your calendar and, based on real-time traffic information, notify you when you need to leave for your next appointment.

The ŠKODA Connect app is free to download from the AppStore and Google Play store.
