2025 North Country Bull & Female sale

37th Annual Sale

April 24, 2025

Glasgow, MT Stockyards at 1pm (MST)

Offering bulls packed with maternal traits & backed by performance

Hello from the North Bench,

a place that gives a strong sense of being uninhabitable for a solid three months of the year. Yet here we are, 120 years on the same hill, 5 generations deep, raising cattle year round. The months of January, February and March consistently seem to test our sanity but we’re committed. March 2024 was a bit different though. We were able to calve on mostly open ground in the hills rather than close to the barn for the first time. It was like getting to know our mama cows all over again, figuring out their tell-tale signs of where they like to hang out, how they hide a calf, etc. Mother Nature continued to be fairly kind to us as we moved the calves through summer pasture, put up quality hay for this year, and weaned a healthy, thriving calf crop.

When all the conditions cooperate, we’re able to honestly say “this is one of the best sets of bulls yet!” and are excited about them. We’ve been consistent with our choice of proven, industry-leading genetics in our AI program and choosing herd sires from other Angus programs that have the same philosophy as we do. This consistency has helped us to continually build our cow herd with the maternal characteristics we all want: fertility, good udders and feet, a good temperament with a strong desire to mother her calf, and a cow that can wean a calf that weighs at least 50% of her body weight. Our goal is to build a solid female, and we believe a solid mama cow will produce quality yearling bulls that will go to work for the commercial cattle producer.

I also feel like we should market our cattle as “livestock that take care of themselves while you follow your favorite performer/athlete around the state every weekend”. We spend a lot of time going the extra mile to support our kids in their events, in turn they step up for our business. Our cattle are worked on horseback, ATV, dirt bike, dogs, and on foot, by us and our kids. Working along side family and the future of agriculture makes this all worth it. We’re lucky to partner with our family too. Merle, Devyn and the kids are a great family rooted in agriculture with strong family values and a love for black cattle. We’re excited about the set of commercial heifers MY Angus is offering. Having an annual bull and female sale is a big goal for both of us.

Thank you to our customers, family, friends and business partners for the continued trust and support. Thank you to Hould’s Bull Development in Malta, MT. Bruce and his crew’s knowledge and dedication of the industry shows immensely and we are grateful. Thank you to Glasgow Stockyards for always being so easy to work with and providing a safe and successful sale, year after year. We honestly wouldn’t be here on year 8 without all of you. We look forward to seeing you on sale day, on the road, or in the bleachers.

God Bless,

Doug, Jody, Lana, Sheila and Orrin

Hello Everyone,

I hope this finds everyone in good health and spirits. It’s crazy that it’s already sale time. While this is only our 2nd year with Doug, Jody, and crew, we have been offering bulls for 17 years now and it seems like time goes faster every year.

2024 was one for the record books and 2025 is looking like it’s going to follow suit. Those of us in the cattle industry are truly being rewarded for our resilience through the drought and obstacles we have faced in the past. While every year has its own share of obstacles, moisture and high cattle prices seem to help with those obstacles.

As far as the offering this year goes, we are extremely excited to share them with you. We feel that we have a good balance of heifer bulls and cow bulls in the offering this year, you will notice that our AI calves ran extremely long on heifers last year. While it is slightly disappointing for the sale this year I am excited about the females that we have coming up! I have maintained my saying of “if we won’t use it, I won’t sell it to someone else.” From calving in the cold, to the extreme heat in the summer, we expect our mommas to take care of their babies and the calves themselves have to perform well.

I hope you all take the time to go through the entire offering and if you have any questions to please reach out and we are happy to answer any questions or just talk cattle.

Thank you,

Merle Young: 406-357-8783

Devyn Young: 406-344-3535

Emerging as this generation’s EXT as a true go-to sire for delivering strong udder quality, outstanding maternal design and reliable calving ease. His daughters are the real deal - they are generating rave reviews and high customer satisfaction across the country for their productivity and their kind. They are big bodied, slick haired and easy fleshing with exceptional udder quality. True North offers one of the most versatile and broadly appealing maternal packages that we’ve seen in many years. We have been using True North in our AI program for 4 years to amp up our cow herd. His females turn heads. Lana took a True North sired bred heifer to the 2024 North East Montana Fair and did well earning Top Overall Female. She has kept her condition all winter, calved in the first cycle, has a nice udder and good feet. Sons : 4013, 4034, 4040, 4056, 4068

His progeny are tearing it up with big-time performance, high breeder satisfaction and outstanding demand in sales across the country. His unique data and imposing phenotype make for as stout and valuable of a power bull package as you can find in the Angus industry. When we pair him with our females, the bull calves have “The Look” from day one and continue to excel in our program as they mature.

He’s gone from a fast track sire in the Sitz program with progeny that have dominated their bull sales to an industry mainstay for quality, substance and performance. Combines the eye appeal, calving ease and carcass merit of ACHIEVEMENT with the powerful muscle mass of Resource. Big bodied, powerfully constructed bull that excels for thickness and volume. We chose Accomplishment to use on our heifers for the past two years because of his calving ease and outcross to other AI sires we’ve been consistently using.

This now deceased, high accuracy and high satisfaction sire has been a long-time customer favorite, earning the position as ABS’ top seller in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Bulletproof maternal pedigree with the power, data and phenotype to produce both quality females and in demand, high satisfaction sons. Patriarch daughters are keepers. Patriarch is another one that we have been using in our AI program for 4 years because of his females, and ended up liking the bulls calves almost as much.

Artillery has proven his calving ease. His calves hit the ground with strong vigor. These calves are born lighter than other sired calves and finish at the top of the calving group at weaning time. We really like his disposition and the attention he gives to his herd. You want to add length to your calves, this is a sire to look at. At 6 years old and 5 years in business at North Bench Livestock we retired Artillery due to a foot injury. We are currently calving his last set of calves.

A Note From Merle

The next 4 bulls are out of a dispersion of cows I purchased February 1, 2024. They were held to the same standards as my own and there’s 5 that made the cut. The old guy I got them from never turned in any actual performance on them so we are relying solely on EPD’s. If you have any questions I will answer them to the best of my ability. They all have good udders and great dispositions. I feel that all of these bulls will work on heifers with the sires extreme calving ease and calving the dams this year, but am leaving that up for the buyers decision with what to do with them.

We didn’t brand 250 heifers last year and these will be the top sort of those. They have been developed by Cole Norskog at Standford Montana and he has done a fantastic job with them . They are expected to weigh right at 775 pounds sale day. Buyer is responsible for delivery, but we will help any way that we can. They will be sold on a gate cut of 5 or more.

Females will sell immediately after the bulls.

Always Remembered, Never Forgotten, Forever Missed Lee Humbert Angus

Lee was a mentor and leader in the industry to many of us. Sadly Lee passed in 2024 after battling cancer. We would like to take a moment to honor Lee and reflect on his career and passion for Black Angus cattle...

Humbert Angus was started in the early 1970’s when Charles Humbert (Lee’s Dad) bought the first registered cows and bulls from Shipp Angus, Saco, MT., Stevenson’s Angus, Hobson, MT and NBar Ranch, Grass Range, MT.

Lee began to use Artificial Insemination early to improve the cattle herd. He spent many hours studying pedigrees and EPD’s. They sold bulls private treaty on the ranch until 1989 when Lee and Jim Fossum decided to do a sale together at Glasgow livestock. Thus began the Humbert – Fossum North Country Angus Bull Sale. He sold 31 bulls in that first sale of which 21 were out of Pathfinder Cows. Lee was fortunate to have many Pathfinder cows in the years he raised Registered Angus. Lee went on to sell bulls together with Doug and Jody Mason, North Bench Livestock, for five years until he retired in 2024.

The enjoyment Lee got from raising cattle and living the lifestyle often showed through another passion of his, photography. He had a great eye for capturing the lifestyle. Lee loved cattle and the cattle business, especially interacting with his customers and friends. He encouraged many young people over the years to begin raising cattle. He gave away many bred heifers and bulls to young people over the years. One of the toughest decisions he made before he passed away was to sell his herd. The Humbert family would like to thank all of you who were his friends and customers. Cheers to Lee, a good man.

We can’t wait to see you next year!
