Wild Edibles

A Practical Guide to Foraging, with Easy Identification of 60 Edible Plants and 67 Recipes

Sergei Boutenko This practical guide to plant foraging gives hikers, backpackers, raw foodists, gardeners, chefs, foodies, DIYers, survivalists, off-the-grid enthusiasts, and doomsday preppers the tools to safely identify, harvest, and prepare wild edible plants and enjoy the health and economic benefits of eating wild. Sergei Boutenko has been foraging wild plants since he was 13, when, early on in a 6-month hike from Mexico to Canada, he and his family ran out of food and turned to the land for help. They finished out the journey subsisting--and thriving--on food they foraged along the way. Back in civilization, Boutenko was dismayed by the inferior quality of store-bought produce and began regularly gathering wild fruits and greens. Now an expert forager, he shares his insights about how to find and eat his favorite wild plants, most of them common in many parts of the world. More than 300 color photos, 20 nutrition information charts, and 67 vegan food and smoothie recipes ensure a safe and delicious experience for anyone interested in reducing their monthly grocery bill while enjoying a diverse diet and radiant health.

Designed for both care providers and patients, this guide to trigger points is a comprehensive resource for the diagnostics, care, treatment, and prevention of symptoms related to fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and other commonly misdiagnosed chronic pain conditions. Every chronic pain condition is caused or affected by untreated trigger points--tender, painful nodules in muscles and fascia. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades and is recognized as a powerful tool for treating fibromyalgia and myofascial pain, as well as dysfunctions such as irritable bowel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, back pain, headaches, mental confusion, impotence, and incontinence. Yet, despite their proven role in the cause of these disorders, trigger points are often misdiagnosed. With this book, authors Devin Starlanyl and John Sharkey provide an excellent resource for both patients and care providers. Chapters focusing on each muscular region of the body link trigger point sites with corresponding symptoms, explain trigger point pain referral patterns, outline factors that perpetuate trigger points, and offer pain relief solutions, including self-help remedies for patients and clinical suggestions for care providers. RECOGNIZED AUTHORITIES: Devin Starlanyl was an early fibromyalgia researcher and is an internationally recognized expert on chronic pain treatment; her first book, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain, now in its second edition, has sold over 250,000 copies. John Sharkey presents worldwide on the treatment of chronic pain. COMMON AFFLICTION: In a 2008 study using newly discovered methods to photograph taut bands of trigger points, the National Institutes of Health noted that as many as 85-93% of chronic pain patients in pain clinics have trigger points. BRINGS TOGETHER PATIENTS AND CARE PROVIDERS: Unlike most trigger point books that are designed for either the practitioner or the pain sufferer, this book sees patients and care providers as comprising a "medical team" and seeks to facilitate dialogue, empowering patients often demoralized by misdiagnosis and misinformation. GROWING AUDIENCE: Trigger point therapy is increasingly used by practitioners both within the medical establishment and in complementary bodywork fields; covering age-related symptoms such as osteoarthritis, impotence, and incontinence, this book will appeal to the growing numbers of baby-boomers focused on pain-free aging.

Activists of all kinds will be drawn to this impassioned, broad-sweeping treatise examining not only the hidden cause of all social progress, but also the hidden connections between ecology, economy, and policy--and showing how to use this information to effect real change now. How do peak oil, climate change, and the limits of growth affect abortion rights, income equality, and civil liberty? In this broad-gauge, impassioned treatise, author and activist Alexis Zeigler reveals the hidden connections between ecology, economics, politics, and social justice--and shows us how to use those connections to effect real, long-lasting change. In this fascinating, holistic examination of some of the most pressing issues of our time, Zeigler makes it indisputably clear that we cannot effectively address any problem in isolation, or with ecological blinders on. Packed with surprising facts and eye-opening arguments, Integrated Activism is a must-read, not only for every serious activist, but also for anyone looking for a solid, creditable philosophy and approach to building a fairer, freer, more sustainable future. HOT-BUTTON TOPICS: Issues such as the Patriot Act, abortion rights, equal pay for equal work, the price of oil, and drug laws are covered in new ways. BROAD APPEAL: The book reveals hidden connections between different types of social, ecological, economic, and political issues, making it appealing to activists and intellectuals of all genres. GRASSROOTS PROMOTION: The author is a confident public speaker who has already done a speaking tour of the United States and interviewed with local TV and radio--and he has a plan for future speaking events in connection with this book. INTELLECTUAL YET PRACTICAL: The content is both heady and theoretical (covering the historical factors contributing to social progress) and practical (offering hands-on solutions such as how to create community-based renewable-energy solutions).

An essential guide to manual muscle testing, Applied Kinesiology, Revised Edition will appeal to a broad spectrum of health professionals including students and practitioners of chiropractic, physical therapy, orthopedics, massage, naturopathy, psychology, and more. The revised edition of the best-selling book on Applied Kinesiology, Applied Kinesiology, Revised Edition introduces a diagnostic method that uses manual muscle testing to determine the state of balance in the body and psyche. By applying light pressure that the client then resists, muscles that "test weak" can be identified as indicators of structural problems or imbalances that need to be resolved. Applied Kinesiology also uses muscles that "test strong" to determine the effect of different stimuli. Thirty-three muscle tests for different areas of the body are accompanied by instructive photographs. This revised edition includes a new preface and four additional chapters that describe new applications for Applied Kinesiology as well as the author's discoveries and anecdotal observations.

UNIQUE PRODUCT: This new edition is the first in-depth introductory textbook to explain precisely how to correctly perform the basic techniques of Applied Kinesiology. CLINICALLY USEFUL TOOL: Originally developed by American chiropractors, Applied Kinesiology is based on manual muscle testing, an approach used successfully by a wide range of body therapists. MULTIPLE AUDIENCES: Recommended for healthcare practitioners including physical therapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, occupational therapists, naturopaths, medical doctors, massage therapists, and psychologists.

Rainforest Medicine

Preserving Indigenous Science and Biodiversity in the Upper Amazon

Jonathon Miller Weisberger In an era in which citizens of industrialized societies have begun to understand the irreplaceable wealth of indigenous science in the world's native cultures, this book will fascinate readers interested in the native heritage, botany, ecology, and spirituality of the South American rainforests. Drawing on the author's decades of experience in rainforest conservation and protecting the cultural heritage of the Upper Amazon, Rainforest Medicine documents vanishing indigenous traditions--natural healing, botanical treasures, mythology, and the sacred science of ayahuasca--with color photo sections and original illustrations by San Francisco Botanical Garden ethnobotanist Thomas Y. Wang, noted artist Pablo Amaringo, and the author himself.

This is a bold and crucial step in these times." --Robert Hass, former United States poet laureate "Presided over by a most benevolent array of plant energies and animal intelligences, leafing and leaping spirits ... like a dark heart of the wave on the sloping strand in wilderness and wonder." --David Abram, author of The Spell of the Sensuous "Jonathon Miller Weisberger--a 'young Schultes'--is a master with the plants.... Occupy Spirituality

A Radical Vision for a New Generation

Adam Bucko and Matthew Fox; Forewords by Mona Eltahawy and Andrew Harvey This book is a call to action for anyone interested in pursuing a radical approach to spirituality and using their talents in service of compassion and justice. The Occupy Wall Street protest movement and youth activist movements around the world are evidence of an incoming tsunami of awakened young people who long for a life of transformative change. At the same time, activists of all ages are seeking deeper spiritual meaning in their quest for peace and justice. In this book, authors Adam Bucko and Matthew Fox energize our moral imaginations and encourage us to use our talents in service of compassion. Each chapter is construed as a dialogue between Fox, a 72-year-old theologian, and Bucko, a 35-year-old spiritual director to homeless youth. As we listen in on these familiar yet profound conversations, we learn about Fox and Bucko's own spiritual journeys and discover a radical spirituality that is inclusive, democractic, and relevant to the world we live in today.

With this story of a boy who learns about the miracles of plant life and the pleasures of drinking blended vegetables and fruits, Victoria Boutenko imparts to young children her infectious enthusiasm for raw foods and healthy eating. For ages four to eleven. Raw-food guru Victoria Boutenko has created a story that will enthrall children while encouraging them to eat nutritious foods. In this lively picture book, Boutenko reveals the magic of the plant world and explains how humans, especially growing children, can use that magic. Following Nic, an adventurous and curious boy, young readers will learn how plants use the power of the sun to produce chlorophyll, and how people can eat plants to grow big and strong. Discovering the sweetness of blended green smoothies, Nic learns that eating right can be a magical and delicious experience. Boutenko does not attempt to paint all vegetables as delicious treats, but rather offers a way to enjoy the sometimes bitter foods we all need. Katya Korbkina's artwork depicts the wonders of plant science as well as the satisfying details of a child's culinary experience. VISIBLE AUTHOR: Victoria Boutenko's weekly newsletter has 36,000 subscribers; her website (rawfamily.com) gets over 50,000 hits per month; and her personal blog (greensmoothiesblog.com) gets over 30,000 hits per month. She is active on Twitter and Facebook, and contributes a weekly video to the Boutenko Films YouTube channel, which has over 4,400 subscribers and 1 million views. RAW-FOOD AUTHORITY: With combined book sales over 200,000, Boutenko commands a strong following worldwide. NATIONAL HEALTH ISSUE: According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, and in 2008 more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With these shocking statistics widely talked about, parents are attempting to make sure their children are eating nutritious foods, which can be challenging. EDUCATIONAL: Providing children with an explanation of the benefits of a plant-rich diet, this book will be a useful tool for parents of picky eaters and for educators of children struggling with weight issues.

Teachings on the Drubchen Ceremony

Padmasambhava and others This collection of teachings by both classical and contemporary masters on the intensive 10-day meditation retreat known as drubchen will appeal to all serious students of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhists regard attendance at a drubchen ceremony as equal to seven years of solitary meditation practice; during drubchen, practitioners recite prayers and mantras for 24 hours a day without rest. Regarded as a very powerful practice, drubchen is said to act as a counterbalance to the negative forces at work in the world, promoting peace within the individual, the community, and the entire universe.

The Soft Tissue Release Handbook is designed for bodywork practitioners using manual therapy, including chiropractors, physical therapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, orthopedic nurses and doctors, and students of sports science. The application of soft tissue release can relieve chronic conditions such as shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, and iliotibial band friction syndrome and aid post-surgical recovery. Soft tissue release is also useful in the treatment of highly trained athletes, dancers, and musicians who wish to tackle those small but key areas needed to maintain their performance. Experienced bodywork practitioners have found that skilled release of the soft tissues reduces the need for adjustments or joint mobilizations, because appropriate release improves joint movement. Freeing the joints and enhancing the health of the soft tissues also facilitates a superior and lasting response to rehabilitation programs. This book is aimed at practicing therapists who wish to address the soft tissues precisely and effectively, whether as an adjunct to existing bodywork techniques or as a treatment modality in itself. Graphic illustrations of the key muscles involved in movement, as well as over 200 full-color photographs of the technique in action, make this an easy-to-use and practical guide. RAPIDLY EXPANDING FIELD: Release of the soft tissues--myofascia, muscle fibers, tendons, and ligaments--is a hot topic within the bodywork community and continues to gain momentum. There is a growing awareness of how manipulation of these tissues can have profound effects on the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. ESTABLISHED AUTHORITIES ON SUBJECT: The authors are both leading practitioners in the bodywork community and conduct seminars on soft tissue release technique for manual therapists of all types in the UK. EASY-TO-USE GUIDE: Lists of key muscles involved in movement are graphically illustrated, and full-color photographs depict the technique in action. The skills presented in this book can be immediately applied in the clinic with existing and new clients.

BROAD MARKET: An invaluable resource for dentists, patients, parents and their children, and anyone looking for simple ways to protect their teeth. INEXPENSIVE SOLUTION: Includes procedures and strategies that can be implemented at minimal cost--appealing to anyone who wants to avoid high-cost visits to the dentist. "Nadine Artemis's well-balanced, well-researched book credibly encourages readers to take control of their own dental health. Plenty to chew on in this stimulating dental compendium." --Kirkus Reviews

This engaging, honest, and often humorous book is a must-read for the millions of people who practice meditation--younger practitioners in any Buddhist or secular tradition as well as experienced and novice meditators interested in learning about how meditation has evolved in the last several decades. Evolving Dharma is a next-generation book about meditation, Buddhism, and the contemplative path. It explores how the dharma (the path, the way, the teachings of the Buddha) has evolved in astonishing ways and how dharma practice evolves in one's own life. Instead of approaching the dharma as spirituality, therapy, or self-help, scholar and practicing Buddhist Jay Michaelson presents it as a set of technologies for upgrading the mind, for physically enhancing its capacity for wisdom and compassion. Michaelson is fearless, unorthodox, and irreverent, yet his book is also based on his decade of meditation practice and teaching as well as his ten years of work as an LGBT activist. Including forays into neuroscience and cultural criticism as well as the author's personal stories of his five months spent in silent retreat, life-changing realizations, pain, joy, and insight, this is not an ironic, wading-into-spirituality memoir but a thoughtful, important work that takes its subject seriously, both as discipline and as individual narrative.

PAST SUCCESS: Michaelson's most recent book, God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality, was a Lambda Literary Award finalist in 2012 and was featured on CBS This Morning, MSNBC, and NPR, and in the New York Times. RESPECTED, RECOGZNIED AUTHOR: In 2010 Michaelson won a New York Society of Professional Journalists' award for feature writing; in 2009 he was included on the Forward 50 list of prominent American Jews. LARGE AND GROWING AUDIENCE: According to a recent National Institutes of Health survey, 9.4% of respondents (more than 20 million people) had meditated in the last 12 months.

The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible Charles Eisenstein This empowering book showing how the concept and practice of interconnectedness is key to world transformation will resonate deeply with fans of Derrick Jensen, Daniel Quinn, Andrew Harvey, Jared Diamond, and Alan Watts. In a time of mounting chaos and crumbling institutions, how can we as individuals do anything to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what's true: We are all connected, all living in mutual symbiosis, and the small, personal choices we make as individuals are far more effective and transformational than most of us imagine. The Light of Wisdom, Final Volume The Conclusion

Padmasambhava and Jamgon Kongtrul The concluding volume in this collection of scholarly "treasure texts" will appeal to serious students of Tibetan Buddhism. Today this ancient tradition is carried on by hundreds of masters throughout the world, whose teachings have touched hundreds of thousands. The Light of Wisdom compiles translations of three major hidden texts on the spiritual path by Padmasambhava, the legendary ninth-century founder of Vajrayana Buddhism, and other, more recent masters. In Volume 5, the authors address the role of the Vajra master in the practitioner's development, and techniques for removing obstacles and enhancing self-realization. FINAL VOLUME IN SERIES: This classic text is the final volume in a mammoth work of unparalled profundity. RARE MEDITATION GUIDE: Pithy instructions for a practitioner on the path. GENERAL INTEREST IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM: Tibetan Buddhist meditation practices continue to grow in popularity, as evidenced by the high profile of the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

"The root text of Lamrim Yeshe Nyingpo, a terma revealed by the great treasure-finder Chokgyur Lingpa, and its commentary by Kongtrül Rinpoche, the great translator in person, form together a complete scripture that embodies all the tantras, statements and instructions of the Nyingma School of the early translations, which is most rare to find in the past, present, or future.... I find it important that all Dharma practitioners study and reflect upon this book."--Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche "It is correct that it will be quite difficult to practice the entire Gradual Path of the Wisdom Essence, so you should use what is directly appropriate for your training.... Light of Wisdom contains the complete path for different kinds of individuals, of Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. But since its title is the Wisdom Essence, it means that its ultimate practice is Dzogchen."--Kyabje Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche

About the Author/Illustrator PADMASAMBHAVA was the legendary tantric master who, at the invitation of King Trisong Deutsen, established Vajrayana Buddhism in Tibet in the ninth century. He hid innumerable Dharma treasures throughout Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan to be revealed by destined disciples in the centuries to come. CHOKGYUR LINGPA (1829-70) is regarded as one of the major tertons in Tibetan history, and his termas are widely practiced by both the Kagyu and Nyingma schools. JAMGON KONGTRUL (1813-99) was a leader at the forefront of the nonsectarian rimey movement in the nineteenth century. Renowned as an accomplished master, scholar, and writer, he authored more than 188 volumes of scripture. JAMYANG KHYENTSE WANGPO (1820-92), the last of the five great tertons, was the master and teacher of all the Buddhist schools of Tibet and the founder of the nonsectarian rimey movement.

Collapsing Consciously

Transformative Truths for Turbulent Times

Carolyn Baker, PhD: Foreword by John Michael Greer A collection of 17 probing essays and 52 weekly meditations, this book is for readers who are concerned about the daunting future humankind has created and who seek inspiration, wisdom, and spiritual purpose in the face of the collapse of industrial civilization. Collapsing Consciously is a manual for making meaning and generating joy, especially in situations that feel hopelessly devoid of both. The first part of the book is a collection of essays which argue that while the collapse of industrial civilization cannot be prevented or averted, its meaning extends far beyond tragedy and loss. These essays ask the reader to delve inward and discover the limitless treasures of the soul, as well as the gratification to be discovered in joining with community in preparing for the future. In the second part of the book, Baker offers 52 weekly meditations comprised of poetry, paradox, inspiration, comfort, humor, irony, and a persistent challenge to create and savor beauty in the world, regardless of how bleak the future may appear. Also available: Collapsing Consciously Meditations, an ebook containing additional meditations.

UNIQUE APPROACH: The impending collapse of industrial civilization has been addressed by such popular writers as Pulitzer-winner Jared Diamond, Charles Eisenstein, Derrick Jensen, Joanna Macy, and Bill Plotkin; Baker's fresh approach focuses not on prevention but on emotional and spiritual preparation. TIMELY SUBJECT: A July 2012 Pew Report describes "pervasive gloom" around the world and shows that support for capitalism is eroding, even in the U.S.; less than one-third of Americans say the economy is doing well. Collapsing Consciously acknowledges this pessimism while offering tools to discover deep meaning and joy even in the midst of upheaval. "Carolyn Baker is an outstanding guide to sustaining and even enhancing our emotional and spiritual vitality as we navigate the disintegration of the world as we've known it." --Bill Plotkin, author of Soulcraft Confirmed endorsement from Andrew Harvey

Messages from the Afterlife

A Bereaved Father's Journey in the World of Spirit Visitations, Psychic-Mediums, and Synchronicity

Mark Ireland In the wake of Dr. Eben Alexander's Proof of Heaven, this personal account of a father's quest to communicate with his dead son will appeal to the growing number of people convinced that human consciousness survives bodily death. The son of a well known psychic-medium, Mark Ireland had been apathetic toward his father's spiritual beliefs and focused on success in the material world. However, the shock of his own son's sudden death plunges him into a serious search for evidence for the afterlife. Ireland explores the world of mediums and spirit visitations, at first reluctantly, then with increasing urgency, as he struggles to reconcile his skepticism with his new reality and the latest findings in scientific research on human consciousness.

LARGE TARGET AUDIENCE: Ireland writes for the growing number of people interested in the afterlife and in psychic phenomena, but also specifically for bereaved parents struggling to understand their loss. Most Americans believe in an afterlife; according to the 2007 Religious Landscape Survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 74 percent of Americans believe in life after death. TRUE STORY: Ireland's unique story of exploring the world of psychic mediums--and even developing his own abilities--after the death of his son will encourage readers who have also lost a loved one and yearn to reconnect with them. He also writes from the perspective of a critical thinker and includes scientific research and many case studies. ACTIVE AUTHOR: Since his son's death, Ireland has become connected with many scientists conducting research in this field as well as with prominent psychic-mediums and can provide a fascinating glimpse of their worlds. Ireland has started a bereaved parents support network, www.helpingparentsheal.info, and is active through social media and his author website www.markirelandauthor.com.
