Our last meeting was very productive, as all good Club Forums are!
We undertook our annual review of our Club Bylaws and took some time to update the document so that it aligns with the new Rotary Standard Club Constitution and Standard Bylaws, while also ensuring that the Bylaws reflect the values and operational requirements of the Rotary Club of Northam.

This discussion took some time, but thank you to the members for working through the document and securing our Club rules for the coming 12 months.
Our member Delia gave us a very insightful and interesting presentation on the OzPhil College of Cavite which is located in the Philippines. This is a project started by Delia in 2015 to ensure that children in Cavite develop their full potential through strong partnerships between the College, parents and the local community.
As an experienced educator, Delia has given a commitment to provide teaching and learning that excels internationally. One of Delia’s key driving forces is making a difference to the lives of many poor families in the Philippines through education.
OzPhil College of Cavite’s Mission is to develop well rounded individuals with educational attributes that enable them to be responsive to the global communities they serve through their engagement in a rich learning environment provided by innovative and professional staff. The College’s Vision is to promote and foster quality teaching and learning that will provide students with diverse and inclusive learning experiences.
To date, Delia and her husband Peter have pretty much been undertaking this project on their own. During a chance meeting with the Flemings from Rotary Club of Boulder at the Rotary WA launch, Delia outlined her project to Jim and Stu who quickly saw the similarities with the Bali School Kids project, which their Club has recently taken over the management.
Delia is keen for this project to become a Rotary project which will ensure it’s survival long into the future. There is potential for the Rotary Club of Northam to partner with a Rotary Club in Cavite to create a project through Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) which could see clubs supporting the College and Rotarians supporting individual students.
At our meeting on Monday 24 July we will hosting District Governor Ineke Oliver for her official visit to our club, along with our Assistant Governor Jill Dawson and other visiting Rotarians from District and throughout our region. Apologies from: Ian Gibbs

July is Maternal and Child Health Month.

According to the World Health Organisation, poor women in remote areas are the least likely to received adequate health care. This trend holds true in both developed and developing countries. Low numbers of skilled healthcare professionals in these regions are major contributing factors to limited access to care. Human resources for healthcare remain a challenge, worsening since the COVID-19 pandemic. The data suggests that 99% of births are attended by a trained midwife, doctor, or nurse in most high-income and upper countries. This figure drops to 78% in lower-middle-income countries and even further down to 68% in low-income countries where almost 95% of all maternal deaths occur.
Many Rotary members have been developing projects that support local health authorities in increasing the capacity of existin healthcare workers and integrating traditional birth attendants, where possible, and providing graduate support vocations in health care. MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM GORDON R. MCINALLY

This year, we’re prioritising projects to support mental health. This effort is deeply personal to me. I know what it’s like to see someone suffer in silence. I have also witnessed the power of personal connections, the value of discussing emotional and mental wellbeing, and the lifesaving impact of preventative care and treatment. Research shows that performing acts of kindness is an effective step any of us can take to protect our well-being. And by building peace within, we become more capable of bringing peace to the world. Building peace is the essence of Rotary. Many of our service projects foster the conditions for Positive Peace. We work tirelessly to overcome barriers and create new connections. This year, we’ll promote virtual international exchanges for members to strength those vital connections. Peace isn’t a dream, and it’s not passive, it’s the result of working hard, earning trust, and having open conversations that may be difficult.
Making a difference can sometimes seem daunting when you think you’re just one person, how on earth can you change the world?
You make the difference by joining your local Rotary Club, and by doing that, you’re working with 1.4 million other people making a difference to their local communities and around the world!
Rotary Club of Northam is one of over 46,000 clubs worldwide. We are non-political, non-religious and open to people from 18 years old, of any gender.
If you would like to come along to a meeting to meet our members and see what we offer to you and the community, please contact our Membership Director, Cherie at cheriedwallace@gmail.com or 0409 807 517.
