The Northamptonshire High Performance Technologies Network is a unique concentration of industries that specialise in the design and manufacture of innovative technologies, engines and products incorporating low carbon engineering and the application of advanced materials and composites.

With its distinctive network of over 1,000 high performance technology companies, Northamptonshire has developed a comprehensive industry supply chain that significantly contributes to the economic growth of the county and enhances its prominence within the High Performance Technologies sector.

Northamptonshire’s Structural European Plan HPT is one of Northamptonshire’s priority sectors in its Strategic Economic Plan which has been put together to pursue this vision and secure significant new funding for the county from both national and European sources and for the period 2015 to 2021.

Economic Value of HPT The Northamptonshire High Performance Technologies Network employs 21,000 people across the county. There are a range of business sizes but the network is characterised by small, technology rich engineering companies. The HPT Network contributes £2bn per annum to the local economy.

Key Employers Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrain, Cosworth, Scott Bader, Mahle Powertrain, Fairline, Cummins Engines and Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 are all significant HPT employers in Northamptonshire.

National & Local Objectives Support for the HPT Network in Northamptonshire is closely linked to national initiatives such as the UK Automotive Council and UK Trade and Investment and we work closely with industry associations such as the Motorsport Industry Association and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

TotalSim is an engineering consultancy specialising in using computer methods for solving fluid and aerodynamic problems. TotalSim was founded seven years ago by engineers formerly employed by the Honda F1 Racing Team. They use the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code OpenFOAM and have substantial experience in race and road car development. They have also worked closely with UKSport to develop aerodynamic designs for clothing and equipment that have won Olympic medals at cycling and bob skeleton.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE GROWTH HUB The Northamptonshire Growth Hub provides a straightforward and fully comprehensive range of business support offered by trained and experienced business professionals, designed to meet a broad range of business requirements and economic objectives.

START-UP For fledgling HPT businesses a programme of support to get started and for the first year of operation - help with business planning, marketing and access to finance with a potential grant of £1,000 to support capital investment.

The INV-ENT funding we have received will allow us to develop a new offering to customers in the Oil and Gas industry. INV-ENT For HPT businesses employing less than 250 people (small to medium sized - SME) and paying business rates (local business tax) in Northamptonshire, a grant of up to £20,000, subject to application, to support capital investment and job creation.

REGIONAL GROWTH FUND A nationally led fund to support business investment and innovation across all sectors, support for capital investment for SMEs and support for R&D and new product development for businesses of all sizes.

SUPPLY CHAIN MENTORING A programme for HPT companies based in Northamptonshire, helping small and large businesses across the supply chain to work together to improve and develop supplier relationships.

SOFT LANDING First three month’s rent free and subsequent three months half rent period at one of Northamptonshire’s network of Innovation Centres (see Innovation & Enterprise Centres page) and for businesses moving to Northamptonshire for the first time.

LOCATE For HPT businesses a grant of up to £20,000 to either relocate or expand by moving to Northamptonshire.

EUROPEAN FUNDING Help for HPT businesses from Northamptonshire’s dedicated team, based in Brussels, to bid for new funding programmes such as Horizon 2020 available to support technology development and business growth.

Northamptonshire HPT companies work with schools, further and higher education providers across the county to develop engineering and technology skills and qualifications amongst young people and also recognise the importance of supporting those in employment to develop new and broader skills.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHAMPTON offers a variety of courses and qualifications in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering. The university prides itself on excellent links with the local engineering industry and through the NORTHAMPTONSHIRE ENGINEERING TRAINING PARTNERSHIP. It gives students the opportunity to undertake paid work placements during their course, creating a pool of industry ready engineers to support the Northamptonshire area.

MOULTON COLLEGE

TRESHAM COLLEGE Tresham is proud to have specialist motorsport training facilities based at the world famous Silverstone Circuit, the home of British Motorsport.

The workshops and industry experienced tutors offer specific motorsport technician training through apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programmes. Learners develop their skills through hands-on experience working with race teams and the highly skilled tutors who boast experience in many areas of the motorsport industry.

Moulton College, together with the University of Northampton and the University Centre Milton Keynes, have established the Collaborative Centre for the Built Environment. This centre is being developed to provide course and research output which is informed by the broader sector.

CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY The Cranfield School of Engineering is one of the largest providers of engineering education, research and technology support to key industrial sectors of the global economy, including aerospace, automotive, defence, energy, health and other crucial engineering sectors of national and international importance.

STEM - SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS. Over the next 10 years, the UK will need 87,000 engineers per year to fulfil supply and demand within engineering, currently only 51,000 per year are coming on stream.

STEMNET (the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) creates opportunities to inspire young people in STEM. STEMNET works with thousands of schools, colleges and STEM employers to enable young people of all backgrounds and abilities to meet inspiring role models, understand real world applications of STEM subjects and experience hands-on STEM activities that motivate, inspire and bring learning and career opportunities to life.

Over 550 STEM ambassadors from Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes work with over 50 secondary schools to help inspire the next generation of engineers.
