Cycling siblings Nigel and Gillian Ellsay are talented cyclists and students who balance their athletic and academic goals by taking NIC university transfer courses while racing as pro-cyclists as part of the 2018 Rally Cycling training team. NIC to Royal Roads University and beyond Access to university degrees is growing for NIC students thanks to a new guaranteed admission agreement between NIC and Royal Roads University. The agreement provides NIC students in six programs the opportunity to complete their associate degree or diploma on the North Island then move seamlessly into their third year at Royal Roads.
“We are thrilled to partner with Royal Roads on this agreement to improve access for students on the North Island,” said Diane Naugler, NIC dean of business and applied studies. “The best part is NIC student access is guaranteed, so students can complete their credential at NIC knowing there’s a seat waiting for them at Royal Roads.”
The guaranteed admission agreement applies to students in NIC’s Associate of Arts degree, as well as criminology, business, tourism and interactive media diplomas. Students have access to five Royal Roads bachelors’s degrees in professional communication, interdisciplinary studies, international hotel management, global tourism management and justice studies.

Culinary Arts Follow your passion for food with a career in the Culinary Arts. Get instruction from expert chefs as you learn kitchen basics and then hone your skills in one of NIC’s fully-equipped commercial kitchens. Star Chef Tina Tang NIC graduate Tina Tang, recently named one of Canada’s Next Star Chefs by the Globe and Mail, returned to NIC’s teaching kitchen to visit with students. Tang, a Vanier grad, took NIC’s Pro Cook Levels 1 and 2 in Campbell River and went on to become a Red Seal Chef. She currently works as the Pastry Chef at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon and also competes around the world as a member of Culinary Team BC. “I’m so grateful I got my start at NIC,” said Tang. Tang would encourage anyone interested in food to give the culinary arts a try. “It’s a wonderfully rewarding career, and there’s a huge demand for trained chefs,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” Chef Xavier Bauby teaches student Gillian Barber Rich how to flambé.

From concept to creation: IMG capstone projects Interactive media students cap off their studies with a capstone project, bringing together the theory and practical skills they’ve learned throughout their program. The final projects are chosen by the students and can include apps, games, graphic designs, websites and branding concepts and are presented to the public at an annual showcase event.
The entire process reflects what students will experience in the real world in working with clients to bring concepts to completion.
“It’s exciting to reveal what students have been working on throughout the year,” said Megan Wilson, interactive media instructor. Along with presenting to the public, students also present their work and network with NIC’s advisory committee — a group of industry experts and alumni that guides curriculum development for NIC’s interactive media programs.
“By the time they graduate, students are ready to work in the creative industry and many already have clients or job opportunities,” said Wilson.

Caring for Seniors in the Community For NIC grad Kira Cranna, the Health Care Assistant program was the perfect introduction into the health care field and a way to give back to her community. “I always wanted to work in healthcare, in particular with seniors,” said Cranna. “Seniors have helped create the community I live in today, and it’s important to me to make sure they have the care and support they need as they get older. This seemed like the perfect program to start a career in a field I find so rewarding.” Health care assistants work in a variety of health care settings, providing care and support to older adults and vulnerable members of the community.
“I started looking at NIC because it’s close to home, but it was the knowledgeable team of instructors and smaller class sizes that made me want to study here,” she said. “NIC has so much to offer, it really feels like you are a part of a community being a student here.” Cranna found the program provided a key combination of theory and practical skills to prepare her to do her practicum placements and enter the workforce. “It can feel very busy at times but that paralleled what it’s like in the workplace,” she said. “It really prepares you to transition and made me confident working as an HCA.”

Leadership through podcasts Fourth-year NIC nursing student Marielle Tattman launched the ‘These are the Nurses in Your Neighbourhood’ podcast as her nursing leadership project.
Indigenous ways of knowing and being NIC’s BSN program is unique in its incorporation of Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Dr. Evelyn Voyageur (above) helped to develop the nationally recognized concept-based curriculum which encourages students to respect Indigenous voices, traditional knowledge and values. “From day one, students are taught to build relationships with clients and how to see people as people,” said Voyageur. “From there they learn how to build bridges.
They learn about others, but they also learn a lot about themselves. I truly believe this is what’s needed for people to be better workers, better human beings.” Voyageur worked closely with fellow NIC nursing instructor Joanna Fraser to lead annual field schools to remote First Nations communities, guiding student nurses to empower and mentor communities to use traditional knowledge and values to restore health.
Her first episode focused on single-use plastics – the first of many initiatives where local nurses, health professionals and community members advocate for change. To Tattman, the podcast has endless possibilities with topics including the opioid crisis and empowering nurses in the workplace. She may also use the platform to highlight other NIC nursing leadership projects in future years. “Nurses are so much more than the people who help you in a health care setting,” said Tattman. “Many of us are passionately working for solutions to human and environmental issues. I wanted to give voice to their experiences.”
